Another longtime item off my travel list. Diners. The very word is evocative of delicious food, friendly staff and cheap food. Does Bartonville Diner, after trying to come here for the better part of a decade strike those notes? Yes! My dad and I wanted to grab food and I was tired of our usual stomping grounds so I suggested we both try something new. We rolled in at 7am on a Sunday to try and beat the church crowds. The first thing we ordered was some coffee and water while we half-looked at the menu while cracking jokes and catching up on recent events. On my way here, I knew I wanted some french toast. It's been a long time since I had any and nothing was going to stop me from getting it. My dad perused the menu online and knew what he wanted ahead of time, too. We quickly placed our orders and got back to chatting up a storm. My dad ordered the Country Fried Steak Skillet and I got the Thick French Toast. The food took a bit longer than expected to come out despite how quiet it was there but that wasn't a problem as we were busy telling each other terrible jokes and sipping decent coffee. Once the food came out, we dug in. The french toast was pretty plain, no real sprinkling of powdered sugar or that soft buttery dollop on top. No biggie as it was still good and it had a nice crisp crunch on the edges that I love and can't replicate at home at all. My dad's skillet looked good but also kind of goofy with a slice of cheese just slapped on top and only half melted. The food was really good and the coffee was decent. Not the best diner coffee I've had but after two cups, I can say it was serviceable without any sugar or cream added in. My dad said he enjoyed his meal but has a preference for a certain style of country fried steak and this wasn't quite it. But we both left with empty plates and full bellies with smiles on our faces. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday morning. If you want to check out the Bartonville Diner, they are only open til 3pm, so make sure you plan ahead due to their limited availability. When I started my travel list, Bartonville Diner was added around 2014 or 2015. Well, after 8-9 years, I finally got to cross it off my list as many failed attempts to try it out. The time it took to try it out wasn't due to the lack of trying. Many plans were made to come here but life happens and plans can go sideways. I'm finally happy to have tried it out and hope I can drop in with my friends that live nearby before too long.

Cool looking menu. Their coffee was good.

Getting windshield time across the US is a great way to experience just how wonderful and creative people in the US have been and still are. Frequently, on a big driving day, we'll want a good breakfast for dinner. Hence the Bartonville Diner in Peoria. They serve breakfast all day. For those who differ from me, I saw plenty of other great looking plates of Midwestern fare walk by... fried walleye, goulash, ribs, sandwiches and burgers, meatloaf, chicken, and more. The servings were huge, so people had bags of takeaway boxes too. For people who ordered dinner, a small basket of fresh baked bread was also delivered to the table. My sis-in-law ordered the Popeye omelette. It has spinach, bacon and American cheese and came with normal choices like hash browns and toast vs fries and pancakes. I ordered the German omelette. It had onion, ham, green peppers, potatoes, and Swiss cheese in it. I had them grill the veg. The potatoes were from the hash browns. My choices for the sides were hash browns and toast. Everything was very tasty, but it would have been better if real cheeses were used. There were a couple of items that had cheddar in them. I think our omelettes had the basic "cheese food" version of American and Swiss cheeses. The staff was great. They were attentive but not overly so. The diner was clean and orderly also. From the outside, I could tell from the structure of the building it has once been a fast food facility. That was more than 20 years ago. Both the outside and inside had been remodeled to look more like a real restaurant. One cool thing was that we could see over the counter into the prep area. Everything looked clean and efficient. I would eat here again. I bet the meat loaf and walleye are fantastic. All the plates walking by looked delicious.

    Steak and eggs

Delicious, best steak and eggs you will get in the area, Definitely recommend! We have tried several breakfast locations and this will be our go to!!! Their onion rings are sooo yummy!

I had the grilled chicken sandwich with fresh fruit. . The chicken came as ordered, plain, with a side of honey mustard. The fruit was also very fresh! Everything was very tasty! My friends ordered the tenderloin and unfortunately I can't remember my other friend's order. They did say the enjoyed the food and too home the extras to finish. I thought my server was wonderful. I am currently on a low salt diet and she did her best to accommodate my needs. After she found out the tenderloin only came breaded she checked to make sure that would be okay, which it wasn't, but helped me order something else. She also didn't charge me extra for the fruit since I was unable to have a side. The cafe was very busy, but not too noisy, except for maybe one person who was seated across from us. I cannot wait to return, I had an exceptional meal.

This place 520 has become our family breakfast on Saturday mornings when we visit. The place is always busy. Sometimes we gotta wait on a table but they usually move pretty quick. On thus trip I talked to the owner as I was paying and told him how good everything was and how far we drove and had to drive home. Oscar is his name and is a great guy. As I was paying he fiddled with the register and as he gave me my change he slipped me a gift card. I was kinda taken back a little and we talked a little more then I went back to the table to finish our coffee to get ready to leave. I got to say the staff here is spot on. Never did we want for anything. The food was great and coffee was delicious. So we pack up the kids and go out to the cars to transfer bags and luggage when I turn around and here comes Oscar the owner. Evidently I dropped the card he had given me. He came right out and we talked a little more to the point I feel we made new friends with each other. I totally recommend eating here. You won't be disappointed. Bring your kids and family and enjoy a great home style breakfast. It's great!

She recommended the Cuban Pulled Pork Sandwich. My sandwich was huge and contained a large portion of pulled pork meat. It was delicious and the homemade chipotle bbq mayo made it all the more satisfying with its rich smoky flavor! The Cuban-style black beans were right out of Miami! Very nicely prepared and included green peas, carrots, corn, and bell peppers, as well. My dining companion, for her part, ordered the Falafel platter, with a side order of gyro meat. The falafel (a dozen), were fresh, tasty, and just the right consistency. These were served with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pita, and hummus. The side order of gyro meat featured a generous portion of decadently succulent lamb shavings and included two portions of homemade tzatziki sauce. Everything we ate was prepared to perfection and could easily compete with exceptional restaurants in Chicago! Yes, the food at One World is that good. As for the service, our waitress Quincy was friendly and professional. As for the ambiance and decor--we arrived ahead of the lunch crowd, so it was pretty quiet. The decor, however, is nicely done. The premises were clean and well maintained. Ditto the restrooms. The restaurant is actually huge. There are multiple dining areas and in the summer there is an outside patio behind the restaurant, as well. As for pricing and affordability--quality costs, and the food here is definitely a cut above. That being said, the owners have priced the entrees quite reasonably considering the generous portion-size and quality of the food. My overall opinion? If you want a dining experience worthy of comparison to the best Chicagoland has to offer, but don't want to make the long drive--or pay twice as much--then I highly recommend this little gem of a locally-owned restaurant in Peoria!

Review Visit: May 2nd, 2015…read more Not just a bakery but a tourist stop. If you mention getting donuts (or doughnuts) in East Peoria, everyone will talk about how good Carl's Bakery is. They produce a lot of doughnuts (or donuts) that are beloved by the residents of East Peoria. Having lived in the general area and having drove by the place a million times, I thought it was time to check it out. If you are familiar with Carl's Bakery, you are familiar with the giant rooster that is outside the building. If you aren't familiar, then there is a giant rooster outside the building. One that is prime for taking a fun photo with. My dad and I did just that after trying out their food. Carl's Bakery is one of those places that seems to be open from before the sun rises to around noon-ish. So, if you are interested in going, you better head there when the roosters crow or else they will be closing up shop. When you go, you have to compete for a parking spot on the side of the building. While Carl's has an indoor eating area, I took the limited parking as a sign that they cater to the 'pick up my donuts (or doughnuts) and go' crowd. Nonetheless, my dad and I found a spot to park and headed in. Once we were inside, we had to squeeze a large throng of people to get to the counter. We told the cashier we wanted to eat in. She guided us to a table and we took a seat. While looking over the menu, I had hopes of getting some breakfast as that is what I assumed they specialized in. Maybe we missed a cutoff point or something else happened but we ended up ordering some lunch instead. My dad got a tenderloin and I got... I honestly don't remember. Maybe a burger that came with a ton of fries. Oh, and we both got coffee. Let us start with the coffee. It was... not good. I've had cheap coffee and this stuff takes the cake. I used more half-n-half and sugar than I normally do. While I am no snob and I put down a few cups, it wasn't worth it in the end to taste some water masquerading as coffee. But no worries. It's just coffee. We were there for the food. How was that?/ A notch above the coffee. I fully admit that I don't remember what sandwich I got but I do remember not being a fan of it. My dad said the same thing about his tenderloin. Both just lacking in everything. How does that happen? Can a chef or someone with cooking knowledge explain that to me? The french fries were salvageable at least. In fact, they were the only things that tasted good. Hype. It has it's place in the world but more often than not, I find that hype ruins a lot of things for me. Movies, video games, restaurants, and various other things. It's nice to get excited about something but when it doesn't live up to that level, I believe it is more disappointing than if it weren't hyped at all. But we aren't here for a hype discussion. My dad and I got to hang out and try something new. Was it the best place ever? No. Do I cherish the memory of this outing? Heck yes. While I may have had a lack luster time here, don't let the opposite of hype dissuade you from checking it out if you are a doughnut (or donut) person. Or you want to stop and take a photo with the giant rooster outside and then find yourself magically teleported inside, trying out their coffee and menu offerings.

Is Main Street a mainstay?…read more Word-of-mouth brought me and my dad to trying this place out on a cold and blustery Saturday morning. He had heard good things and I had heard the same so we figured to see what we thought of it. It wasn't too busy when we arrived and we were told to take a booth to our right. We sat down to a half-full but bustling restaurant. We got our menus and drinks promptly and started poring over the menu. My dad went with his usual country fried steak skillet-style meal and I went with a basic stack of pancakes and bacon. The vibe of the place was a generic blend of diner and family restaurant. Nothing really stood out to me that was unique besides this US Veterans table we were next to. I didn't get to snap a photo as they just cleaned it off and were about to sit down another group of people that just walked in. The waitress brought out our food and accidentally brought us a muffin instead of my bacon but was super quick to swap the two. Looking at my food and the price I paid and looking at my dad's food and the price he paid, I was instantly jealous he got so much more food for about the same price. The pancakes were large and plentiful compared to some places I've been and the bacon were long strips and not shriveled up and almost cooked too long. So why the mid rating? The waitress and staff overall weren't all that friendly. They weren't unpleasant by any means but the friendly chatting and banter you normally get at a restaurant was lacking here. There didn't seem to be a lot of mingling and cohesion to the staff that you see at most other restaurants. It was weird and if not a bit mechanical feeling. I'm not the most extroverted of people but a little bit of banter or chatting with the server is usually a plus. But most importantly is the food. How was it? Serviceable. The pancakes, even with the butter spread on it and plenty of syrup, were lacking a big punch of wow. Granted, it's just pancakes but I'd prefer to eat pancakes at a restaurant that don't feel like something I can make at home. The bacon was super tasty though. Just a bit disappointing that 3 strips were $3.99. My pops said he enjoyed his meal but it wasn't anything to write home about. I did try a small chunk of his country fried steak and it was decent, if not a bit overly crunchy/burnt on the steak portion. Overall, not a bad time with my dad but I just wish my meal wasn't lacking that punch for $12. I'd definitely come back and try a lunch item to see if that provides the oomph that eating out provides versus eating at home.

Worst of all there was no Bourbon glaze which was a bummer because it wasn't seasoned ...not one bit!! The Reuben wasn't actually bad, the thick cut corned beef was yummy but the bread was also over toasted. The fries were good as was the side of ranch for a dip. We ordered a side of pickles for the Reuben but they came when the sandwich was nearly gone and only when we reminded the waitress which didn't circle back like normal to see how we were doing and check to see if things were good.
