Shortly after walking in, I discovered that there is not a changing table in the women's restroom; my hubs informed me that there is not one in the men's either. Another longtime item off my travel list. Diners. The very word is evocative of delicious food, friendly staff and cheap food. Does Bartonville Diner, after trying to come here for the better part of a decade strike those notes? Yes! My dad and I wanted to grab food and I was tired of our usual stomping grounds so I suggested we both try something new. We rolled in at 7am on a Sunday to try and beat the church crowds. The first thing we ordered was some coffee and water while we half-looked at the menu while cracking jokes and catching up on recent events. On my way here, I knew I wanted some french toast. It's been a long time since I had any and nothing was going to stop me from getting it. My dad perused the menu online and knew what he wanted ahead of time, too. We quickly placed our orders and got back to chatting up a storm. My dad ordered the Country Fried Steak Skillet and I got the Thick French Toast. The food took a bit longer than expected to come out despite how quiet it was there but that wasn't a problem as we were busy telling each other terrible jokes and sipping decent coffee. Once the food came out, we dug in. The french toast was pretty plain, no real sprinkling of powdered sugar or that soft buttery dollop on top. No biggie as it was still good and it had a nice crisp crunch on the edges that I love and can't replicate at home at all. My dad's skillet looked good but also kind of goofy with a slice of cheese just slapped on top and only half melted. The food was really good and the coffee was decent. Not the best diner coffee I've had but after two cups, I can say it was serviceable without any sugar or cream added in. My dad said he enjoyed his meal but has a preference for a certain style of country fried steak and this wasn't quite it. But we both left with empty plates and full bellies with smiles on our faces. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday morning. If you want to check out the Bartonville Diner, they are only open til 3pm, so make sure you plan ahead due to their limited availability. When I started my travel list, Bartonville Diner was added around 2014 or 2015. Well, after 8-9 years, I finally got to cross it off my list as many failed attempts to try it out. The time it took to try it out wasn't due to the lack of trying. Many plans were made to come here but life happens and plans can go sideways. I'm finally happy to have tried it out and hope I can drop in with my friends that live nearby before too long. read more

Getting windshield time across the US is a great way to experience just how wonderful and creative people in the US have been and still are. Frequently, on a big driving day, we'll want a good breakfast for dinner. Hence the Bartonville Diner in Peoria. They serve breakfast all day. For those who differ from me, I saw plenty of other great looking plates of Midwestern fare walk by... fried walleye, goulash, ribs, sandwiches and burgers, meatloaf, chicken, and more. The servings were huge, so people had bags of takeaway boxes too. For people who ordered dinner, a small basket of fresh baked bread was also delivered to the table. My sis-in-law ordered the Popeye omelette. It has spinach, bacon and American cheese and came with normal choices like hash browns and toast vs fries and pancakes. I ordered the German omelette. It had onion, ham, green peppers, potatoes, and Swiss cheese in it. I had them grill the veg. The potatoes were from the hash browns. My choices for the sides were hash browns and toast. Everything was very tasty, but it would have been better if real cheeses were used. There were a couple of items that had cheddar in them. I think our omelettes had the basic "cheese food" version of American and Swiss cheeses. The staff was great. They were attentive but not overly so. The diner was clean and orderly also. From the outside, I could tell from the structure of the building it has once been a fast food facility. That was more than 20 years ago. Both the outside and inside had been remodeled to look more like a real restaurant. One cool thing was that we could see over the counter into the prep area. Everything looked clean and efficient. I would eat here again. I bet the meat loaf and walleye are fantastic. All the plates walking by looked delicious. read more

My coworker and I ate here yesterday morning and the experience was unbelievably good. This Diner is a mom and pop locally owned joint, with cheerful, friendly servers. The coffee is delicious, and the prices are unbelievably low. I had a country skillet for $13 or $14 and it was more food than I could eat, came with two pancakes, and was absolutely scrumptious. My coworker had a Cajun skillet that he really enjoyed as well for a ridiculously low price. I don't know how they can keep prices so low with the cost of eggs right now, but I would highly recommend the Bartonville Diner and will 100% be coming back here when I am in the area again! read more

It's not for looking, because I have eaten fried chicken at eight or 10 other places and search. Things I like about this venue is the old-fashioned venue that I've missed for so long. Also, the service is provided with a cheery smile! Follow the fried chicken dinner with a huge slice of carrot cake and a scoop of ice cream. I highly recommend the Bartonville diner! Went there yesterday. No more than sat down and got 2 drinks and a group of 8 came in off the farm and were yelling at the top of their lungs and apparently knew the young waitress with rainbow colors all over her face who screamed back at them. I asked my wife to leave but she said no, 3 of those girls made 3 trips to the bathroom past us then came out all glazed over, then gave my wife hate look because she knew what they were doing. Typically the Bartonville Diner is pretty good both food and service wise. Not this time. I noticed they closed at 8:30 and to avoid the crowd on a Friday night my wife, son, and I decided to slip out for a bite to eat and arrived around 7:45PM. We were quickly seated and greeted by a heavy set blonde girl with tattoos. She was filling the condiment bowls that were set on the table. Our table got a new bowl of creamer and while she was doing so we made small talk. Eventually she goes away and we sat there for 15 minutes waiting to order. We looked at the menu on line via Facebook prior to leaving and we knew what we wanted. Eventually the blonde girl comes back and apologies for the wait and mentioned something about how they switched sections recently and we were seated in her section. Seems odd they would do that 45 minutes before they closed but ok?? One of the "niche" things about the diner is the bring out a few slices of bread to snack on. No bread. My wife got up and had to ask for some for our son. Eventually the girl takes our order and my wife and son head to the bathroom. The waitress comes over and mentions to me they are all out of the chicken and dumpling soup and asked if I wanted the other soup instead or coleslaw. I told her not to worry about bringing out the vegetables as I wouldn't eat the green beans or the cole slaw and I told her I didn't want the pepper soup. So I asked if it would be possible to swap out the soup for some extra french fries. She said she would ask. A few minutes later she comes out with our food. I notice as well as my wife my plate seems to be a little light on fries. So my wife asked her about the extra fries and the waitress got snippy with her. The waitress told my wife that I said not to worry about the soup or the coleslaw and to just bring me the chicken fingers and fries. Not true. I told her I'd pass on the green beans and I wanted to swap the soup for more fries. So my wife tells me that since we paid for our food we need to get the food we paid for. So my wife asks for the cole slaw so we can take it home for later and the waitress brings it out. In the mean time we are eating our food and my wife is upset over the attitude of the waitress. She had ordered a hamburger which was very dry and some of it got stuck in my wifes throat and she ran out of water. So my wife asked for more water as she had food stuck in her throat and when the waitress brought the water back my wife apologized for being snippy earlier about the lack of fries. The waitress apologized as well but agreed that my wife was being snippy first. Eventually the waitress walked over to the owner and the owner asked what was going on and she replied that we were being rude. I understand that the customer is NOT always right but when the customer asks for a substitution you should at least respond to them and let them know the status. If she came out and said no, we can not give you more fries, I would have asked if anything else could have been done to replace the item they were out of. That never happened. I hate leaving this review as we really enjoy the food there. Normally we are waited on by one of the mother/daughter waitresses that work or worked there. Not this time and given the lack of the owner not being willing to substitute items they are out of we may not be going back. I know I know, they won't miss us but would it really kill them to add another handful of fries to a plate? I would also like to add that the prices you see online like here on Yelp are not correct. It lists a chicken finger platter at $8.99 and it is in fact almost $13. Our total was about $10 higher than we had planed it to be. Not a big deal if you are paying with credit or debit but if you are on a budget and paying cash add another $5 at least to the prices online to cover your bill. read more

Diamond in the rough breakfast spot - Egg white omelette with bacon, spinach, tomato and feta hit the spot this morning; fresh hashed browns and a good biscuit served with the meal. The feta really adds to the omelette! Great spot for dining outside now that the restrictions are being lifted - I had to get back into work this morning so I did a takeout order, but there were people already congregating for AM Gossip and Coffee at 7:45! This is a neighborhood place that we go to often. It is always busy but service is good. Your cup gets refilled often. Central Illinois enjoys several good restaurants operated by Albanian families. This is our favorite. Sandwiches come with a large bowl of soup so filling that you wonder why you didn't just order the soup. But the sandwiches are sooo good. Breakfast all day includes several choices of omelets and skillets. Don't order the omelet unless you are hungry. Don't order the skillet unless you are famished. My other friend ordered some type of steak with mashed potatoes. While, our bacon cheeseburgers tasted quite nice. Her steak looked like a piece of meat that was pounded into the high heavens. A family-owned family restaurant. Good food, large servings, and decent prices No magical culinary innovation here. To be honest, it's your standard *Insert Town Name* Family Restaurant menu. The fare selections do good a place in my heart as they are reminiscent of old truck stop diner menus that I loved ordering from when traveling with my family when I was little - it's vast with a little something for everyone. The breakfast skillets are great, with my favorite bring the corned beef hash skillet and breakfast seems to be their strong point, In good conscience I cannot recommend the pancakes (very dense & heavy) or their omelets (not so much are they omelets, more like a scrambled egg loaf). While I've not had much of their lunch or dinner menu items, the burgers are very good but the french fries are disappointing (think generic Ore-Ida crinkle cut fries from grade school). The interior of the restaurant is clean with generically pleasing decor. My only complaint about the dining room is that the tables are very close together. The only other complaint is the men's restroom. To put it nicely, it's long overdo for a remodel/renovation. To put it bluntly, gross. The waitresses are very friendly and do a great job, overall. I used to be a regular here but something has changed in the quality of the food being put out in the last month or so. The tenderloin has went down hill I'm not sure if they are buying something cheaper or what, it doesn't even look the same. The ribs for the last few years were really good but something changed with those also. The country fried steak has been changed to, I'm pretty sure it wasn't homemade so I'm betting they are just buying a different product to save money. I hope that works for them I won't be back. The service, food and prices are all OK, what you'd expect from a family diner. However, after seeing their low health department scores, we won't be back.
