10's all around - food, service, ambiance, all of it. It's such a charming spot with the sweetest people ever. Rose, the owner, was so kind to us and our daughter she had her smiling up a storm even though we missed nap time. She was also great about helping us make sure we were avoiding some allergies our baby has. The food is delicious. We got the veggie shawarma wrap and the falafel wrap, both were sooooo good. The veggie wrap especially. For some reason I thought it just had grilled veggies in it with toppings but there's actually a veggie patty (but in strips like you'd usually see shawarma meat in) in there and it hit the spot. They had a ton of vegetarian options too so it wasn't just those two. We will 10000% be back and highly recommend checking it out. read more

I don't know..... maybe I missed something here but I ordered a large gyro and what I got didn't look like a gyro. It looked like a wrap with some other type of meat in it..... not gyro meat. The owner, or at least the face of the restaurant is an absolute gem. She remembers all over her regulars by face, if not by name. She talks to just about everyone that comes to her counter about life happenings she remembers or knows about. The food is worth me driving from University and Forrest Hill (to not drop other names) all the way up to the north side. I almost exclusively eat the gyro. I have had the garlic chicken one. PRICES DO NOT MATCH THE MENU LISTED ONLINE. I placed my order over the phone based on the prices from the menu listed on Yelp. The gal refused read out the price to us over the phone after the order was placed. When I got there and paid, they read out that the price was $77!!!! I ordered 4 items and made them combos because it was only an extra $2.00 per item according to the menu listed on Yelp. What they actually charged me was $9.00 per item plus an additional $5.00 to make everything a combo. I also ordered a kids meal which is supposed to be $6.19 as a combo. They charged me $7.99 for the kids pizza and another $5.00 to make it a combo! When I confronted the owner about the prices, she said she has no control over the prices listed on Yelp. Refused to give any money back. The fries were bland and over cooked. Not impressed at all with this experience. Definitely would not order from here again. read more

Was in Peoria for a few hours passing through the city and was craving a shawarma and man is this the place to go! I have had so many gyros/shawarmas in the Chicago area and this is still the best I've had thus far! Was excited to try based on reviews but was not impressed with this place at all. My family loves Mediterranean food and we decided to try a new spot. The food took a very long time to come out and when it did, the majority of the food came out lukewarm and was sparse in ingredients. The only thing that was hot was the fries. Went with several people and all said the same that their food was cold and taste was mediocre. Service was also not helpful when asking questions about the menu items or particularly welcoming. Bathrooms are dirty etc. I would definitely never come here again. read more

I've been coming here for years...I feel bad for not reviewing till now. It's my favorite Mediterranean place in town. I've never had anything here that I didn't enjoy, but my go-to is the spicy gyro and breaded fries. The hummus is excellent...the best I've had in the US. I've only been here previously for lunch. This time we stopped in for dinner and the lady working was very nice and helpful. We ordered pita with hummus, and the soft bread was delivered steaming hot to our table with one of them puffed up like a balloon. Yum-o! We had enough for leftovers the next morning. Flopped out on the couch, staring at each other and asking "what's for dinner" is as good excuse as any to go hit up Pitas! They also have a number of specials which we have tried because we do truly love their pita wraps. My daughter and I like to order a gyro and an eggplant parm, cut them each in half and share. We seriously love the eggplant parm. You might want to order an extra 2-3 to keep on hand for a snacking emergency. The pitas themselves are handmade and a lighter more fluffy pita you'll never see. Think flour tortilla from the heavens kind of texture. We have both dined in and carried out. Huge portion of fries can be easily shared. Nice selection of canned San pelligrino makes a nice beverage change from your coke and sprite. Service is nice and quick and the ladies at the counter couldn't be nicer. If I were in a picnic mood I would pick up a couple of their wraps, some hummus and add in a little fruit and you would have one stylin' picnic. Just sayin!! If you haven't stopped here yet, you're missing out! Just make sure to check the hours - I believe they're closed Sundays. I first had Pita's about 7 years ago. My recollection was that the falafel was fairly bland. WRONG. It was flavored evenly and perfectly. The pita itself was fluffy and fresh, the vegetables added juiciness, and the tzatziki blended it all together with creamy goodness. My husband, who is less of a fan of this type of food than I am, also very much enjoyed his chicken Parmesan wrap. Great for a lunch or casual dinner! read more

Great flavors, lots of choices. Almost fast food-- but it's fresh. Sit down and there are lots of meatless or meated entrees. Chicken, lamb, beef, turkey- you can't go wrong. Though their wraps are tender I prefer to forgo the wraps and have the platter version for less carbs. The lamb schwarma was great with added tomatoes hummus and pickles. I tried the kibbee for the first time- meat and rice in a ball fried, soft flavorful inside, crisp chewy outside--great experience for the dive interior. read more

Pita's specializes in Mediterranean food and wrapped sandwiches with an American twist. Try it, you'll like it! I think the reason you don't hear about this place is that Peorians are obsessed with chain restaurants and are resistant to something new. But vegetarians will love Pita's, and there's something here for everyone. I have been here three times, and have always had a great experience. The most recent time, I ordered 12 pieces of falafel w/a side of Tahini sauce. The falafel was crispy on the outside, but soft and kind of sweet in the inside. Tasted a little bit like a hush puppy, an interesting take. The sauce was nice and garlicky. My buddies ordered a veggie shwarama, and a spicy gyro wrap. They marinate the gyro meat in like a buffalo wing sauce, and top it with all the fixings: lettuce, tomato, onion, tzatziki cucumber sauce- and for only $3 more, you can make anything a combo with fresh-cut fries and a fountain drink. The fries reminded me a little of In-N-Out's fries- soft, but delicious. AND, if that wasn't enough, they have soft serve ice cream with 32 different flavors ranging from Amaretto, to Cheesecake, to Cherry Chocolate, and on and on. Visiting a friend in Peoria, of course I Yelped trying to look for a good place to eat and when I saw this place with almost full 5 stars I had to try it! I mean the pictures provided by previous yelpers were too appealing but I say what the heck? I find hole in the wall in Jersey/NY that turned out delicious all the time. Boy, do I regret my decision: Walking in, it looked like a run down pizza joint. You would never have known that it's a Mediterranean restaurant. I just thought that's how the Midwest was so I didn't think too much of it. I was the only one there so I picked up a menu to browse which btw was printed from a printer running out of ink because I couldn't see half the stuff on the menu. Smh. While I was waiting a lady came in to pick up her order, I kept looking because I didn't know what I wanted. So she chatted with the lady working behind the counter. After about good 5-10minutes waiting for them to finish their conversation, I ordered a spicy beef gyro and some falafels then before she swiped my card I added some baklavas. The food was ready pretty quickly and the lady was friendly so no complaints there. My problem was the food. I mean I'm no Mediterranean food expert but I have been to a few Mediterranean restaurant to know what's good or not. So I got home with my food all excited. I opened the brown bag and took out what looks like a footlong. In my opinion, it looked more like a wrap than a gyro. It tasted ok; nothing special. I suspect frozen meat but I digress. The falafel was even worse. They wear hard as a rock. When I bit into them, they crumbled like a ball of dried mud. I only ate half of the "gyro" and 2/3 of the falafels. I finished them the next day and they actually tasted better after some microwaving. Also, I need to mention the baklava tasted weird. It was dry and crumbly not the sticky, moist that I'm used to. All in all, I was really disappointed especially because I'm still confused where the 4.5stars rating came from?? Is it because people from Midwest never had Mediterranean food? Are their palate just different from mine? Seeing that I won't be back in the Midwest anytime soon, I don't think I'll be returning to this place ever. Sorry. My inner pessimist is kicking me for awarding five stars to a place I've only visited once, but I can't help it. I can't believe my husband has known about this place for years and JUST TOOK ME THERE TODAY FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. What the hell, husband? ANYWAY. So good! Fluffy, warm, delicious fresh-made pita. Crispy, flavorful falafel. Creamy, pungent hummus. I didn't taste the gyro, but my husband loved his. The prices aren't crazy cheap, but the portions are HUGE, so it's a great value. My husband and I eat a lot of Mediterranean food, so we were excited to happen upon this little shop tucked away in an otherwise unexciting shopping center on the outskirts of town. We came around noon, and the place was packed to capacity with office-types on lunch. Despite a long line, we were served quickly and the food was fantastic. The portions were huge, especially the combos, which came with about two big handfuls of seasoned fries. The special that day was stuffed grape leaves- my favorite!- so we ordered a plate of them. I remember thinking the price seemed a little high, but when they came out, I saw why... it was enough for 4-5 adults to have as an appetizer. My kids each had a pizza (not exactly gourmands yet), which they liked. Unlike most restaurants where they get a pizza, this was NOT a Mama Celeste from the back freezer- it was a freshly made pizza on pita. As a final testament to how great this place is, I will tell you that my husband came here for dinner WHILE I WAS IN LABOR at the hospital. La la la! This place made me want to sing. So cute, quaint, homey with first-rate food. I actually made a point of going up to the woman working the register before we left to tell her that her baba ganoush was -- no question -- the best I have EVER had. ... I'm not sure that actually impressed her (or whether it should), but I meant it wholeheartedly. On that note, the pita was equally incredible. This is going to start to sound disingenuous, but seriously. Best. Ever. So good warm that I wanted to gobble it up in two seconds, but our leftovers (wrapped only in a brown bag) still tasted pretty good the next day. I'm usually hesitant to order felafel as it's liable to be over-salted, over-parsley'd, etc, but here, I was totally satisfied with my choice. The outside is very, very crunchy, so you have to be prepared to really bite into it. The inside was a little bit more gooey or bready than what I'm used to, but ultimately, I decided I quite liked the blend and the texture it produced. The hummus was solid but plain, save some paprika, so don't expect anything crazy that you find in the grocery store these days, you know, the sun-dried tomato bit and all that. The Gyro will rock your world. Period. The flat bread is made fresh daily and made specifically for your wrap. It is warm, chewy, and delicious. The gyro meat has a wonderful flavor and the staff is delightful. If you want to try the best gyro in Peoria make sure you stop by here. It is a bit expensive for fries and a gyro but it is worth it. As far as gyros go in Peoria this is my favorite BY FAR! The wraps are huge and very delicious. I usually go for the traditional gyro but friends have had the chicken and loved it as well. I've also had the falafels once and found them a little over-fried but still tasty. I also love the fresh-cut fries. The serving size of these is also huge so I often split it with my hubby or a friend. Last weekend we also ordered a side of pita bread and hummus. I have to admit I'm no connoisseur of Mediterranean food and I've only visited one time, but I fail to see what the rave reviews are about. I ordered the spicy Gyro, and it was tasty, but unlike any other Gyro I've ever had Was it better? Can't say it was, just different. I'm accustomed to having Gyros with the Gyro meat -- a mixture of spiced lamb and beef I believe being shaved off a rotating spit. Didn't see that here. And the pita bread is usually about 6-7 inches in diameter and warmed on the grill, before being slathered with cucumber/yogurt sauce, the aforementioned meat, and a few slices of tomato and lots of onions. These Gyros weren't like that at all, I have to agree with Kate F that that the pita seemed more like a tortilla wrap, although I didn't find that really offensive, just not what I expected. And I don't know - perhaps this is really authentic and my idea of Gyros is Americanized, I don't know enough to say who's right. Anyway, it was good, but different and not exactly what I was craving. I also had the lamb pie and wasn't very impressed - it's fairly small but I wasn't expecting much for 2 bucks, kind of like a stuffed baked crescent roll with some ground lamb inside. This is still my favorite Mediterranean restaurant. They have a great meat and wrap selection (including vegetarian), great hummus and baba! Pretty disappointed in the Yelp reviews. No way this place is 4 stars. I am a big Gyro fan and have had Gyro's all over the country. I've had good and bad. This place is less than average. The portion size isn't bad however the wrap is thin and dry. The Gyro meat is really bland without any spice at all. The fries were not bad, I don't recommend the humus either. I wanted to love this place since I'm new to the area but have to be honest. 2 stars! read more
