Oh Jerusalem, you used to be so good. I started coming here when it was a little hole in the wall off of Marion Street. Since it moved on Lake St. the service was always a little spotty, but the food was always so good so it didn't matter. The last time we went here we were armed with a coupon we received in our clipper magazine. We ordered our food, falafel sandwiches and hummus, and presented the coupon. The manager stated that those coupons do not exist and it isn't for Jerusalem Cafe. We questioned him about and he insisted that coupon was not for their establishment. We let it go and sat down to enjoy our food. I've eaten many a falafel sandwich in my day, but never have I had horrible stomach pains 3 minutes after diving into my sandwich. My husband began to experience the same sensation a few minutes after digging in on his sandwich. Not sure what was going on, but we left our half eat grub and were out of commission for the rest of the night. When we returned home and checked out the coupon it, indeed, WAS for Jerusalem Cafe. Like a fool I tried this place for the second time and was equally as disappointed. First time, Beef Shwarma and my daughter had the beef kabobs, we also ordered 2 falafel. The food was of average quality but I must say the beef shwarma was tough and had many chewy inedible pieces. The hummus was by far the worst I have ever had! A week later, I thought perhaps I would give it another go and order chicken. It took them over 30 minutes to prepare a chicken kabob dinner and a beef kabob dinner. They jipped us on the hummus and so I called and the owner hung up on me. I called back and got hung up on again! I will never go to this food establishment again. This place is great. We just did an event for 100 people. The owner and his brother were wonderful. We came in to try the food, and they were so hospitable and gracious. The food was fresh and wonderful. When we got our catering order a few weeks later, it was perfect and they even threw in a few extra pieces of baklava. Everyone raved about the food. It was fresh, the chicken and falafels were hot, and the salad went in minutes. I would highly recommend this place and I will be going back again next time I'm in Oak Park. read more

This place was ok. The portions are just enough with maybe a little left over. I had the combo feast and hummus. The chicken shawarma was ok, a little dry, but the flavors were missing garlic!. Same with the beef kabob. The falafel was not memorable at all. The hummus was really just a chickpea whipped cream. The texture was not what I am use to and the flavor was definitely missing. No garlic at all! Now I am not a garlic fan, but it seems to be an essential flavor in middle eastern food and it is def. missing here. This place is like going to Olive Garden for Italian food. I can't pick one thing i like on the menu because i love everything from the chicken shawerma to the steamed veggies to the hummus and salads. Also its a beautiful atmosphere to dine in. With nice colored walls and decor from the middle east. The customer service is great and even though it's dine in there isn't a long wait to get your food. I stopped in here for the first time the other night with a friend who recommended it. It was raining really hard, and the guy behind the counter handed us some paper towels to dry off, which I thought was sweet of him to do. I wasn't very hungry, so I only ordered a Sweet Dream Smoothie (strawberry, banana, and raspberry i think? whatever it was was really good!) and baklava. I'm on crutches, so I sat down at a table, thinking my friend would grab the food, but the guy behind the counter brought it out to us! I like to see that at a fast food place! I was surprised how small the portion was for my baklava, but realized I didn't need more than that because it was so thick, rich, and just GOOD. My friend had the Beef Shawarma (he wanted them to mix the beef and chicken because he likes them both, which they couldn't, but no big deal). I tried some and was really impressed! I like this place for the size of their entries and the price. I like how you can get a decent piece of salmon, with rice, salad, humus, and pita for just under 10 dollars update at 10.45, it's large enough for 1.5 meals. The taste is bland, but it's healthy so that makes up for it. Plus when I think about Mediterranean food I don't think it's very tasty food, I just think of it as one of the healthiest diets out there, minus most of the rice and increase the salad portion. I guess Trader joe's under 5 dollars salads are healthier and their store is only a short drive away. As I sit here with my stomach in knots, and in between visits to the comode, I'm forced to think of my bad experiences at the Jerusalem Cafe. My first qualm is their inability to alter/sub any little thing on the menu. Once it was falafel but today chicken was the issue... Me: "May I have a gyro with chicken?" JC: "No." Me: "Really?" JC: "No." Me: "Do you not have chicken?" JC: "Yes, but not for the gyro." That said... fine, no substitutions. We've all been to restaurants that follow that policy. I can deal. But today, the cherry on top, which finally made me decide to write one of these, was watching the cook leave the public restroom smelling of what I'm sure was a very fulfilling number 2 and return right to cooking food. Yes, perhaps his hands were washed thoroughly behind the closed door of the restroom located directly next to the dining area, but as a former cook who also worked in a very visible (to the public/customers) kitchen... You should ALWAYS wash your hands again in view of the customers after exiting a public bathroom!!! It is common knowledge that that door handle of a public restroom is a cesspool of epic proportions, and has been used by countless customers who did not feel the need to be hygienic and wash their hands!! So for my safety, your safety, and everyone else's safety, WASH YOUR HANDS AGAIN!!! If they had a less than 1 star rating, Jerusalem Cafe would have received it. This is now two bad experiences and nothing to show for it but a stomach ache. So Jerusalem Cafe, I think not! read more
