Zurn 1" 600XL Pressure Reducing Valve - Pressure from the street is 135PSI, confirmed with the Goleta Water District

UGH. I had previously used Jerry's Plumbing & Heating for many plumbing related issues around my house, 12+ years, including installing a new water softener and a tankless water heater - all done exceptionally well, reasonably priced, with great service. So when I thought my pressure regulator blew last week, of course, I didn't think twice to call them to schedule an appointment to take a look at it. I am more than happy to report that the service techs arrived within 20min of the start time window, where they took a look at the regulator, asked how old it was, and based on the last time it was replaced, we determined it was over 10yrs old, they said it had to be replaced again. Ok, fair enough, so I asked how much would it be. The main tech walked to truck, came back a minute later, said $575 including the $125 service call... Wait a second, blonde brain processing... that's a $450 part??? Even though a little miffed at the price, I did verbally say OK, but I ALSO said I was texting with my husband about the price (he's an electrician at UCSB) and four minutes later, I came back outside, they had already replaced the unit. So, on my end, I totally admit it was my fault for giving a verbal-yet-rather-hesitant "OK" and yet on their end, it was rather arrogant on their part to not give me a few minutes to discuss with my husband first. Bottom line? Lesson learned. IF YOUR GUT SAYS WAIT - SAY NO - and then sort it out. While I'm all for quick and efficient repairs, this was the most rushed situation I've ever dealt with - and I work in high end real estate (11+ years) - mostly handling escrow inspections and repairs with all kinds of vendors on a daily basis. After I paid the invoice, I called the office and asked why the markup was so high and the woman that answered said "oh that's because if you buy it from a retail store, you don't get the 1-year warranty" and "that it's not the same quality part as the contractors get" - Uhm, what??? This isn't rocket science, these are basic plumbing parts. So I totally understand and accept a markup for the warranty, that makes sense. But the quality? Come on... I don't think so, thus I contacted a local rep for the regulator mfg and they confirmed those specific units at retail stores are the same that contractors can get wholesale, simply because they are essential plumbing fixtures - period. The lady at the office also said that since I had already signed the estimate, there was nothing we could do ** and I had to correct her ** I did NOT sign any estimate that said the repair was $575! The only thing I signed was for the final credit card charge because they were already done and clearly, I was already screwed. Long story short - I will never use or recommend them again, in both my personal and professional realms. If you DO decide to call them, just be sure to do your homework PRIOR to committing (verbally or written) to have them do anything for you. For reference: This pic attached shows the part that was replaced. It costs $198 (pre-tax) at Home Depot, Lowe's, Miners ACE Hardware and anywhere else, yet I was charged $450 for this part, at an approx 217% markup on the part alone, which is outrageously insane. BOTTOM LINE - DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. Lesson learned.

Oscar showed up in less than 1/2 hour- I was grateful as the City said to not use toilets/showers until the plumbers got here.

I took off a star for the price (see below for details). Timeline: I found out about the problem Sunday night (11pm), Thomas came around 9am Mon, and he was done at 12pm. My positive experience: My water heater (2016 Rheem) stopped working, and they were able to come out first thing in the morning to take a look. Upon reviewing my existing water heater, they recommended replacing it, along with some infrastructure updates to make sure everything was up to code. Thomas explained everything that needed to be done in detail, and I had a great experience interacting with him. The price: I took off one star because they're a bit on the pricey side. I ended up paying a little more than I originally wanted to even with some discounts they were able to provide. My original water heater was also still under warranty for both tank and parts until 2028, but this information was never revealed to me. I found out after I approved the job (my fault for not looking into it). I would've been happier if a cheaper option to replace some broken parts was offered to me as well, so that I could've made a better informed decision on repair vs replacement. Overall, I'm happy with their work, but price sensitive customers may want to look at other options before making a decision.
