Dr. M's earliest appointment for me as a new patient was four months in advance, in early December, so I took it and waited. However, on the very morning when my appointment day finally arrived, her office called to say that she was ill and that I had to re-schedule my appointment--this time for a date a few weeks later. Some days before the date arrived, however, I was once again called by her office, this time to be told that the doctor had left the practice, and they had no idea where she had gone to. Since Michelle Malcolmson knew full well in advance that she was leaving Stanford Medical, she should never have allowed me to dangle for months under the mistaken impression that I was going to see her. By so doing, she caused me to waste much valuable time before I could see another other physician as a new patient. I call that irresponsible and heartless.

I felt so good in fact, that I had to be careful because I did not feel like I had surgery. I'm 73. Did I have doubts? Absolutely. Who in their right mind doesn't? But, I knew I had to make a decision. And, with the help of my daughter, Dr. Ross's nurse, Ki, and Dr. Ross, I did. Before my surgery, I had a prostate exam and cystoscopy. Neither experience is exactly what I call fun. I also had a catheter tube inserted in my penis for a month. I'll let you figure out how much fun that was. As you may be aware, when your prostate really starts to act up, the bigger danger is it can cause great injury to your kidneys. Which can lead you down a road of no return. That helped me put all the discomfort and pain into perspective. Your experience will be different from mine, of course. But I have to say that Dr. Ross is an excellent surgeon! and I hope this message makes it easier for you to take action on your behalf and feel confident about the decision you make.

Also, it's a good sign when several of SF's top specialists know her name (Dr. Grogan - Podiatrist, Dr. Kitt - Neurologist, Dr. Kangelaris - ENT). Dr. Newcomer is knowledgeable of so many conditions and keeps herself up-to-date on the most recent research and treatment methods. She is willing to dive into every aspect of my health and work with other practitioners outside of the one-medical network to make sure I am getting the best care possible. Beyond her capabilities as a Doctor, she's a really cool person. She's usually rockin bubble-gum pink hair and she's into cool music. She can be a fast talker and she'll definitely keep you in check if you just aren't prioritizing your health, but she's super supportive of you living your best life. Unlike other practitioners I've had in the past, she never slut shames, fat shames, or makes you feel wrong for having mental illness. Seriously, she's the best. Even outside of the a face-to-face appointment environment, she is unbelievably thorough. She always responds to my messages faster than I expect and follows up with me when I need lab work, shots, or anything else. Dr. Newcomer is a DO through and through. She has stood by the "whole person" philosophy through my entire tenure as her patient. I can not imagine having a more personable experience with such a kind hearted, knowledgeable and patient physician! Dr. Hudson was able to diagnose and prevent some serious issues with me over the years of which I am in her debt of gratitude! Dr. Hudson is always consistent to discuss good healthy eating habits and exercise on most visits. She always inquired on how things were going personally in my life and would offer useful advice. My office visits never felt rushed and I actually felt like she spent more time with me, if she felt it necessary. I think Dr. Hudson really cares about people and wants only the best for her patients. Please indulge me and allow me to expand on just a few of my experiences with Dr. Hudson over the last 25 plus years of her being MY doctor! For example, the year my mother passed away in 2001, she was extremely kind and very patient with me by allowing me to express my grief, without rushing me, in my appointments, during that difficult year. I am sure some of my appointment times went over the allotted time frame, but she always seemed to know what was important and needed. Dr. Hudson was a VERY busy woman, in her Walnut Creek office at that time, with a full waiting room of patients, yet she made the time to help me cope with my loss. Another example is when I lost my medical insurance for a period of time, Dr. Hudson was so gracious and worked with me and gave me discounted visits to enable me to continue seeing her and still receive excellent services. Also, she did NOT skimp on those visits, either, as she still provided the same high quality level of care! During that time, I would request basic short office visits, to help minimize my cost, but I feel she did extra services because she knew it was important, at no additional charge. She always tried to give me advice on places to get labs and tests at a lower cost, when possible, too. I can't thank her enough for her kindness and generosity as she really helped me financially. It was a bit disheartening to read some of the negative comments regarding Dr. Hudson, as that has absolutely NOT been my experience with her at all! She is a good, decent human being and an expert in her field and I think she only wants the best for her patients! Dr. Hudson is also a Fellow of the American College Of Physicians, which Fellows are considered a distinguished group of doctors dedicated to teaching, research as well as medical practice! She is always well versed on current medical matters and procedures and I feel that I am in VERY capable hands and have full confidence in her abilities to keep me healthy as she has done all these years! Dr. Hudson is great for being able to make same-day appointments during regular M-F business hours…read more If you don't typically require care after normal business hours, don't travel frequently and don't need a specialist, you might be happy with Dr. Hudson. Unfortunately, I've had two occasions when I've needed to see a doctor and I didn't time my sickness during a M-F business hour. Dr. Hudson has no after-hours call service, so if you need attention after hours, you will be directed to an urgent care center or the emergency room if it's after-hours for urgent care (which is even more upsetting that a patient's only option is to head to the emergency room - since emergency rooms are already overfilled and the staff has much more important things to attend to than someone who just requires an antibiotic!). Dr. Hudson also won't call in a prescription for anything without seeing you in person first. So, if you have a recurring medical issue which she's previously seen you in the past and all you need is an antibiotic called in for you - she won't do it. I might otherwise be fine with this policy, however, on the most recent occasion I was traveling and unable to get to her office until later in the week. The receptionist indicated no exceptions can be made to this policy. Once again: my only choice was to head to a local urgent care office or emergency room. My other frustration with Dr. Hudson as my primary (which she is no longer - because I need a primary doctor that I can actually reach after hours and who will be able to prescribe an antibiotic for a recurring medical issue when I am traveling) is that she comes across as knowing most everything. She purports to be a sports doctor (in addition to everything else), so on a recent visit I had her take a look at a lump on the back of my leg. She diagnosed it as some sort of cyst or other "common" mass that she could take care of in her office. Luckily, I already had an appointment scheduled with a knee specialist - and it turned out I had a tumor on the nerve that required surgery (with the assistance from a spinal doctor due to the location on the nerve!). I've had relationships with many doctors in my 1/2 century - and other than Dr. Hudson, I have always been able to reach my primary doctor after hours and have never had an issue with obtaining an antibiotic for a recurring medical issue. Although I haven't found another primary doctor yet - I will happily visit my local urgent care before giving any more of my business to Dr. Hudson!

It takes a long time for the staff to call you back. It is always important to document the date, time and name of the person you spoke to on the phone. Please make sure you keep copies of the UCSF Epilepsy Center phone numbers appear on your cell phone bill and duration for evidence. Make sure you document the staff when they call you back. Dr. Lowenstein is the Director of the UCSF Epilepsy Center and he is a very nice person. But he needs to do a better job in training his staff on their professional manners over the phone. The Joint Commission recently issued an alert on July 9, 2008 warns rude language and bad behavior among health care professionals poses a serious threat to patient safety and the overall quality of care. Hope that the UCSF Epilepsy Center doctors and staff pays attention to this alert from the Joint Commission.

Dr. Richardson was recommended to me by One Medical Group for my concussion. Front desk staff did…read morea fantastic job balancing being kind and empathetic and professional and also efficient with the backlog of patients in the waiting room - my appointment started about an hour and a half late. The exam itself included taking down notes of my concussion and symptoms timeline, and administering a 30-point evaluation that included knee-hammer-reflex-test and some very easy cognition assessments. At the conclusion he agreed with my PCP's diagnosis of post concussion syndrome, said I passed 29 out of 30 points of his evaluation, and come back in a few months if I'm still not feeling better. When I pressed for anything else I could do, he referred me to cognitive therapy (which was helpful in identifying that I needed to see a vision therapist instead - look up UC Berkeley Optometry School Concussion Clinic at Tang Center, they're amazing!). Dr Richardson gave me a copy of his notes after the exam, and I noticed several inaccuracies (saying "patient does not" when I do have something, or "patient does" when I don't have something). Many months later I was seeing a vestibular therapist and when she asked if I'd seen a neurologist and I mentioned my experience, she asked for the name of the neurologist I saw and on learning it was Dr. Richardson, the vestibular therapist said she'd had another concussion patient who had a very similar experience with Dr. Richardson. If you have a concussion, you probably won't have a terrible experience seeing Dr. Richardson, but you probably won't get much help either.
