Highly recommend Dr. Brian Richardson. After a not-so-great experience with another neurologist, he treated me for concussion & head injury. He was compassionate, professional, and knowledgable. My case was not as straightforward as others are, but that did not deter him. While assessing the state of my symptoms over the course of multiple visits, he worked diligently to determine the right combination of medication and referrals to other specialties that would get me back on the road to being functional again. Dr. Richardson was recommended to me by One Medical Group for my concussion. Front desk staff did a fantastic job balancing being kind and empathetic and professional and also efficient with the backlog of patients in the waiting room - my appointment started about an hour and a half late. The exam itself included taking down notes of my concussion and symptoms timeline, and administering a 30-point evaluation that included knee-hammer-reflex-test and some very easy cognition assessments. At the conclusion he agreed with my PCP's diagnosis of post concussion syndrome, said I passed 29 out of 30 points of his evaluation, and come back in a few months if I'm still not feeling better. When I pressed for anything else I could do, he referred me to cognitive therapy (which was helpful in identifying that I needed to see a vision therapist instead - look up UC Berkeley Optometry School Concussion Clinic at Tang Center, they're amazing!). Dr Richardson gave me a copy of his notes after the exam, and I noticed several inaccuracies (saying "patient does not" when I do have something, or "patient does" when I don't have something). Many months later I was seeing a vestibular therapist and when she asked if I'd seen a neurologist and I mentioned my experience, she asked for the name of the neurologist I saw and on learning it was Dr. Richardson, the vestibular therapist said she'd had another concussion patient who had a very similar experience with Dr. Richardson. If you have a concussion, you probably won't have a terrible experience seeing Dr. Richardson, but you probably won't get much help either. read more

Richardson was a "Breath of Fresh Air" from what I had became use to experiencing during my post stroke recovery. Staff is INCOMPETENT!!! Booked me for a video visit as a new patient, only problem is video visits are not allowed for new patients. How did I find out; 2 hours before my appointment when they called to say they made a mistake and I'll have to make it to their office or reschedule. Unfortunately for me I had to cancel because I live a hour and a half away so there was no way I was going to be able to make it to their office in time, and the next appointment was weeks out, I need assistance ASAP. Yes I do recommend Dr Richardson. I cried the entire time I was there over my despair about politics. He is certainly a great listener and a kind man and didn't send me to an insane asylum at all!! This was a 10 minute consultation that cost $542 and I have PPO. I really was not impressed with him. He prescribed pills for my headaches that made me nauseous. Really didn't take the time out and ask a whole lot of questions. He seemed disengaged maybe because I was the last patient of the day. Also, I had to wait an additional 45 minutes in the lobby because he was running late. Make sure you ask how much its going to cost before you get his services. Don't bother making an appointment. Dr. Richarson kept us waiting 45 minutes in the room after a 2 month wait for an appointment. He recommended some testing, but won't answer my insurance company's request for two basic answers for why the testing is needed. I waited 6 weeks for an appointment with Dr. Richardson for some tendonitis evaluation. I had requested him because he had seen my mom 15 years ago and seemed like a good doctor. On the day of the appointment I waited in the lobby for around 10 minutes and was then brought back to the evaluation room by the assistant. She told me that the doctor was finishing up with another patient and would be in in a minute. I had brought my uncle to wait with my two kids in the waiting room and was keeping tabs on how long I was in the exam room. I sat it the room for what ended up being 45 minutes. The assistant came back a few times to apologize and offer me water, and I thought about just telling her that I would like to go back to the lobby, but just hung tight. During my wait I could hear the conversation in the next room, which was very intense. There was what sounded like a young woman who was very upset and explaining to the doctor that she was suffering and couldn't sleep. He was asking questions about her pain etc. The point being that there was really no privacy between the two rooms. When he did finally arrive, there was no acknowledgement of my wait. He opened his computer and started typing the info from my chart. He asked my about what brought me in and symptoms and then did a few quick tests, push against hand, track with eyes, touch my nose, lift my leg, do i feel pick pricks. No more that a 5 minute physical eval. He didn't have much to say and was very curt in his answers to my questions. Maybe he was burnt out due to the previous hard session. The time with him in office for 15 minutes tops. He told me after the cursory eval that I should come back for electrical testing, which is the real testing. I said ok and scheduled the appointment a month out with the front desk. 2-3 weeks later the office called and told me that I scheduled the wrong type of appointment and moved my date another few weeks out. It was around this time that I received my bill for the brief, cursory visit. $600. I couldn't believe that even a neurologist could get away with charging what amounts to $2400 an hour for his time. I called Sutter Health, which is the network he works for and they told me it was billed as a level 4 visit. A level 4 visit by there definition is an in depth evaluation, that is 45 minutes on average. I filed for a review, which took them around 2 months to do. I cancelled the follow up, because I didn't want to get overcharged any more. During the review period, Sutter kept sending me late bill/ collection warnings and kept phoning me to collect. Each time when I told them that they were reviewing the bill they seems to have no awareness of it. Long story short, they said the doctor reviewed his file and his billing code was correct...so pay up or go to collections. I have had severe monthly migraines for years and was never able to get relief until I visited Dr. Richardson. Dr. Richardson quickly reviewed the medications that I had been prescribed previously and recommended that I try Imitrex. Dr. Richardson is a fantastic doctor--he is extremely professional and really cares about his patients. In the all of the appointments I have had with him, he has been able to address all of my needs and concerns. Favorable first visit. Knowledgeable, personable, provided initial competent assessment. Referred to insurance company for approval for an MRI which Dr R's Office reported that it was partially denied. Patient attempted on four to five occasions to talk to Dr. Richardson about the report sent to Blue Cross. Dr R never returned any of the phone calls. His office agreed repeatedly to send denial letter and never did, despite repeated requests via phone. In an attempt to talk to Dr R my husband ( the patient) scheduled another appointment, which the office cancelled one day before the appointment. My husband has a neurological disorder that needs a diagnosis and treatment. We are frustrated at this wall of resistance to help my husband. This review is from quite a few years ago, maybe 10, so keep that in mind. (I am once again looking for a neurologist due to insurance changes and ended up on Richardson's Yelp page and decided to write a review now.) I have a neurological sleep disorder that requires taking pharmaceuticals so I can sleep. Dr. Richardson was pleasant enough, not exactly a warm or engaging person. He prescribed a standard medicine for my condition, and it did help me sleep. Unfortunately I am one of the many people who basically had a manic episode in response to the drug. This became big news, and I was involved in a class action suit because of it. The relevant point here is that I had to go to Dr. Richardson and tell him about the side effect and what I learned in doing my own online research. He basically told me, "No, that doesn't happen," even though by then this side effect was big news, including many stories in mainstream media, even People Magazine. I hope by now he is more up to date on what is going on with medications he is prescribing. I found another neurologist who understands drug effects and interactions much better. read more
