I never got to see Dr. Michelle Malcolmson. When my primary care M.D. dropped her practice unexpectedly in June 2025, she recommended Dr. Malcolmson at Stanford Medical in Emeryville. Dr. M's earliest appointment for me as a new patient was four months in advance, in early December, so I took it and waited. However, on the very morning when my appointment day finally arrived, her office called to say that she was ill and that I had to re-schedule my appointment--this time for a date a few weeks later. Some days before the date arrived, however, I was once again called by her office, this time to be told that the doctor had left the practice, and they had no idea where she had gone to. Since Michelle Malcolmson knew full well in advance that she was leaving Stanford Medical, she should never have allowed me to dangle for months under the mistaken impression that I was going to see her. By so doing, she caused me to waste much valuable time before I could see another other physician as a new patient. I call that irresponsible and heartless. read more

Less than 2 weeks before my appointment it was cancelled. Her next one is two months out. No explanation for the cancellation and no guarantee it won't happen again. read more

As a new patient, I had little wait to schedule an appointment with Dr. Malcolmson (It was not months and months, common in the Bay Area). Upon discovering a mass in my x-ray, she promptly arranged referrals for a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy. Dr. Malcolmson provided excellent support and advice, and she is responsive to emails. From my point of view just explore other options before you choose Dr Malcomson. Yes I'm an older woman patient with core morbidities but trying to reinvent my treatment regimen is not what I need. I recently saw Dr Malcomson for the first time and frankly it was nerve wracking. My last Doctor was efficient and empathetic Dr Malcomson is not. She may be TECHNICALLY EFFICIENT but ignoring my specialistists and noting why the treatments I've been using for years are questionable is destabilizing mentally. In other words she made me a nervous wreck. Noting everything that was contraindicated and telling me that I shouldn't be using certain drugs because I was too old just unhinged me. By the end of the appointment issues I had specifically asked about we're never addressed and the only action taken was to tell me I needed blood work done. I got edgy and tried to explain about specialists but she didn't seem to hear. To her credit by the end of the appointment she began to understand what was going on. The whole thing was a nightmare. I recently was able to visit Dr. Tisi in her new location on Sutter Street. She is no longer with Bay Spring Medical Group which I think is a great improvement/move for her. A lot of people complained that the reception staff at Bay Spring was bad, but the new office has a very warm and welcoming front desk and nurses. The new office freshly painted, brand new equipment and very clean (which of course is always very important in a doctor's office for me). Dr. Tisi spend almost an hour with me when I came in for a check up. She also helped me find the lab I needed to get blood work done at which is a short walk down Van Ness. Dr Tisi herself also followed up with a phone call after my appointment with my lab results. Most doctors have assistants call so its great I can talk to her directly and ask questions. I highly recommend her for Internal Medicine!! read more

Dr. Tisi is not a reflection of Bay Springs Medical Group, from what I hear. She's just one of the few Dr's who is also taking new patients. I had a bad experience with this Dr. There were a few choice moments that I can share and the rest is left to the summary of judgment and jumping to conclusions. My blood pressure was slightly high when I came in due to caffeine and hiking up Leavenworth. The nurse who took it said it was fine and they'd take it again before I left, sure that it would be normal when that happened. Dr. Tisi, without ever having seen me before, decided that it was "really high for someone who is 26". Concerned, I asked if it was actually "really high". She responded that it wasn't actually really high but that I should cut all the salt out of my diet. She also mentioned that I should get a blood pressure machine and constantly monitor it. I've never had a dr tell me this and I felt it was unnecessary and a bit judgmental after only one reading. She did not re-take my blood pressure. She also was intensely adamant that I dig up as much of my family's medical history as I could, insinuating that my 82 year old grandmothers use of some type of heart medication implied that I am at risk for Diabetes (not in my family) and various heart diseases. I'm informed of my family history, and if I make it to 82 and only have to take something to keep my heart in rhythm, I'll be pretty happy. My final comment: I went there for birth control and Dr. Tisi actually gave me incorrect information regarding the pill I switched to. She let me know (with a somewhat condescending look) that I would need to wait a full month for the pill to be effective, I told her that she was the first Dr. to ever tell me this and she replied that I would need to follow the rules if I didn't want to get pregnant. I read the instructions afterwards the instructions told me the pill is effective after a week of proper usage. This is what every other GYN has told me in the past. Basically I felt like i was being judged the whole time and that she wasn't willing to wait for my lab results to talk to me about what was (if anything) really wrong with me. I would recommend Bay Springs Medical Group, but find out if another Dr. has availability. read more

I had recently moved to SF and needed to have the regular "womanly" check up and start the pill. Dr. Tisi was nearby to where I lived so I decided to give her a try- I never expected a bad experience. I waited for her in my gown for almost half an hour. And when she came into the room she said it was normal waiting time. *No, its not.* Like Jenni C. (previous reviewer), I sensed a condescending look and tone of voice - and diagnosed me with all sorts! A heart murmur being one and immediately signed me up for all sorts of heart tests! She also had me take a blood test for vitamin D deficiency - and ofcourse, I was deficient, by something insignificant. Anyways, the point of this review, is to state that Dr. Tisi does not approach patients in a warm, caring manner but more like guinea pigs - test this, test that, you are lacking this, you'll need that.. - I was so overwhelmed with the tests done on me and all the things wrong with me! I had no time to consider if it was necessary or not or how severe it was... she did not provide explanations to why and what was going on. She just seemed so excited to find things wrong with me. For example, the heart murmur, rather than following her appointment, I went for a second opinion at another doctor, and he said it is nothing to be concerned about nor is it necessary to take the tests! I have insurance coverage, but I saw the bill for my blood test (requested by her - which was not really necessary) and I still have to pay over 200 dollars - a waste. Dr. Tisi is a phenomenal doctor and VERY thorough. She's down to earth and easy to communicate with. The way she speaks to you and treats your health concerns shows that she truly cares. There aren't many doctors out there that take the time to actually converse with you. She doesn't run her practice like a fast food chain. She is highly knowledgeable, interested in helping, professional and cares. My grandmother, who is 69 and has encountered many good and bad doctors in her lifetime, also sees Dr. Tisi and loves her. She was very pleased with the great measures Dr. Tisi takes to ensure that she was receiving the best health care available. My good girlfriend also sees Dr. Tisi and speaks highly of her. read more

Dr. Tisi has been my doctor for many years now. I'm typically in great health, but I tend to do crazy things like competing in ironmen, racing motorcycles, and hiking in marshes - all of which lead to a series of injuries, bites, rashes, you name it... Some reviews said she isn't experienced. Today I went in to have a tick removed and, where others failed, she surgically removed it quickly and gracefully (it had burrowed its head deep into my chest). I had a skiing related injury and she had the best advice I've ever heard on how to fix it (showing an impressive knowledge of the sport, gear and non-drug solutions). She definitely understands the things that are important to me. I also love her approach of trying to find solutions that don't involve drugs or surgery. She has never been late to one of our appointments, and she has always given me enough time to get through everything that was important to me, and she has always been willing/able to see me within a day or two of calling. Dr. Malcolmson is incredibly smart and sharp. Unfortunately, her office staff and peer doctors are absolutely terrible. There are no appointments for months. There have been multiple cancellations on me even after they know I have been to the ER multiple times. They do not send orders or the proper paperwork when requested. Numerous times I had to call ahead of time to testing centers to confirm that they received orders. If Dr. Malcolmson ever goes independent I would follow her. She just cannot provide the necessary care seeing the volume of patients at UCSF. I tried asking for help but she could not accommodate. I am looking for a new doctor. read more

This doctor is super-efficient if you need to navigate within the complex UCSF medical system. Tests, appropriate referrals to specialists and PT, test results, prescriptions, all went like clockwork; whereas several of my friends using the UCSF medical system (same office, Mission Bay at 185 Berry St.) ended up with inappropriate referrals and a variety of barriers and delays. read more

I have never written anything on yelp before, but was so irritated by the appointment I had with Dr Tisi that I figured now was a good time to start and warn others to go elsewhere. She seemed neither competent nor compassionate, as others have mentioned. I went to her as a new patient to have a primary care doctor to coordinate my care with physicians I have seen for awhile regarding migraines and sleep issues. She said she would not continue to manage my medications because it was "outside her scope of practice." As a nurse practitioner, I do have medical knowledge and nothing I take is outside her prescribing authority. Without rehashing the entire visit, I will say I cannot think of any excuse for telling a patient some of the things she said, which seems to go along with other reviewers who found her condescending and inexperienced. For example "You cannot continue to take that medication. What are you going to do when you are 60 years old and you fall and break a hip because of it?" (I am in my mid 30,s). "Who are you going to see when you get high blood pressure, or get sick? You can't go to a neurologist for that." (I do not have high blood pressure, nor does anyone in my family. Where did she come up with that, I wondered) These were a few of the numerous inappropriate remarks. I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow when her response to my continued attempts to discuss my plan of care was "Read these articles about vitamins and how you shouldn't take too many vitamins and how half of North America suffers from Vitamin D deficiency." I was thinking to myself--Are you kidding me? You are asking me to read some unrelated vitamin articles as my "homework" without even discussing in any detail what vitamins I might be "over-consuming" (none) and my vitamin D sources (plenty)? The kicker was once she was done lecturing me and started to get up to leave the room, though nothing I had come for had been accomplished. She looked at me and sarcastically said "You're welcome" as I started to put on my coat, when I had not said thank you to her. From her office lobby, I promptly made a call to the physician who had recommended her to clarify she was clearly not willing to take care of my basic medication management because it was so "complicated" and "there could be many drug interactions" and "numerous side-effects" with what I take. I have been on these (few) medications for years and numerous doctors and my pharmacy have confirmed I am not taking anything with dangerous interactions and I have not had any side-effects that have been problematic. I agree with the reviewer who wondered if she was really a doctor, or just someone who had watched a few movies and had rehearsed to say "I concur," which in her case seemed to play out in her "Vitamin D deficiency" theory and stack of vitamin articles in the room. I have seen and worked with a lot of doctors (and have a family of them as well). I was horrified into yelping. It was that bad. read more

My health has steadily improved in the years since Dr. Malcolmson has been my PCP. She really listens to how I am feeling, and I trust her recommendations. When I've had a problem, she's referred me to a specialist, or ordered tests and followed up with me right away about the results. When I've had a question, I've contacted her with the online portal and she's always responded within a day, usually within a few hours. She does my annual checkups and if anything comes up during the year she's my first point of contact. I personally prefer to go to a specialist for the annual "down there" exam, but Dr. Malcolmson does those too if you want a one-stop-shop. Very caring staff and nurses too. read more

I have to agree with Eric C.'s 2010 review. I have been seeing Dr. Malcolmson (Tisi) since late 2007, and I have had nothing but excellent care from her and her office staff. If you are looking for an M.D. that is knowledgeable, kind, truly concerned with your care and dedicated, then Dr. Michelle Malcolmson is the perfect choice. In fact she goes out of her way to stay on top of things. If I have a blood test, or something else has come back wrong, I either get an immediate phone call or an email via "My Health Online." Folks, I am not joking with that statement. I don't know how she does it, but one day I replied to her email and in less than 5 minutes I got a reply back, and this has occurred multiple times. In my case were most Doc's would throw their hands in the air, Dr. Malcolmson stays on it and solves the issue. She is truly the nicest Physician I have ever had. As to the reviews about knowledge? Those who made those reviews obviously don't get it. I have ton's of issues, and Dr. Malcolmson has never failed, nor even scratched her head. I have read some of these negative reviews, and everything that Jenni C. said back in 2009 was way off, and everything that Dr. Malcolmson did was right on. Now I am just reading the review from her view point, but I have worked in critical care for 25 years. Asking for ones family history is dead on, and just because there is no history that you know of for diabetes in your family obviously something in in Jenni's Grandmother's history put up a red flag. As to the pill, it is common knowledge that old instructions for the pill are not as accurate as we once thought, so a month is better. I think that I'd trust Dr. Malcolmson's advise over my non med school education any day. When I came to Dr. Malcolmson I did not know her from adam, but I was impressed straight away. read more

Why is it so hard to find a good internist? I've been to 3 female internists in the last 5 years and never returned to any of them. I was hoping Dr. Tisi would be ok. She needs to warm up and get some good bedside manners. She spent very little time with me as a new patient. Didn't bother to take patient history. After a few days of being extremely ill my pal Natalie G. suggested that I go see Dr. Tisi since I'd been sleeping in the bathroom for the past week. I took her advice and boy I am glad I did. I was seen immediately on a friday. There was a lot of paperwork to fill out I have to admit and some of the questions were completely random but I guess they wanted to be very thorough. Dr. Tisi was extremely nice and very detailed in finding out what was wrong with me. I was taken care of quickly and sent on my way to get some bloodwork done. Everything was quick and efficient. Later on in the evening she called to check up on me and I was to be seen in the ER. If it wasn't for her help I would've been 10x sicker. I recovered in a few days and she also made sure to check up on me thereafter. I would highly recommend going to this practice. All the doctors including Dr. Tisi are very helpful and give you very personal care. Tip: Bacterial infection = best diet ever. read more

I am modifying my review because Dr. Tisi read it, contacted me and said that I provided incorrect info. She told me that she left her old practice to "help build a primary care center for Sutter Health." I will take her word and therefore I am publicly apologizing to Dr. Tisi for incorrectly guessing why she left her previous practice. However, my opinion about her service remains the same (as a doctor and as a professional). During my time with her, I felt she was extremely inexperienced and immediately regretted having selected her as my PCP. I had originally hoped to get a different PCP in the same practice who was highly regarded in the medical community and was referred to me by other doctors, but she was not accepting new patients. Dr. Tisi was the only one that was, so I selected her with the hopes that if I ever encountered anything serious, she would be able to tap into the knowledge of the older, more experienced doctors within the group. If anyone would like to know the details of my experience, I am happy to share and you may contact me. While I wish her success with her new practice (she did go through rigorous years of medical training and selected an admirable profession) and believe that it is possible for doctors to become more experienced over time, I still believe that patients should not be choosing doctors based on Yelp reviews or through friends. I highly recommend that one does their due diligence (if you have a friend who happens to be a doctor - they can dig up all the scoop and know everything about the different medical programs and schools out there). Please use Yelp for restaurants, nail salons (all the frou frou stuff) but never for a doctor! I did not have a positive experience with Dr Malcolmson. She seemed in a hurry to get the appointment over with, made snap diagnoses on 2 occasions that were completely wrong, worst of all, treated me in a very condescending way and did not seem interested in anything I had to say. I found a really wonderful doctor, Gyorgy Petaki, here in Marin, and am much happier and actually look forward to my appointments with him, rather than dreading them, as I did with Dr. Malcolmson. Dr. Malcolmson spent a really long time with me during my initial consultation, around 45 minutes. We went through my entire medical history. She actually listened to my concerns and we came up with a plan together. She is respectful and treated me as a partner in my health care. I don't get the comments about her appearance. She is young, but extremely professional. I'm not sure what a doctor is "supposed" to look like? Marcus Welby? Act like a remote god who doesn't explain what they're doing? I"ll take a real person who is up to date, compassionate and knowledgable over someone who acts like a doctor from the 1950's. It's about time our physicians reflect the diversity of our world. Huh, I'm a patient of Dr. Tisi's, and looked her up on Yelp to get her phone number and was pretty surprised to see the negative reviews. Obviously, I can't really comment on what other people's experiences were, but I've always had positive interactions with Dr. Tisi. She's been really thorough, referred me to specialists where necessary, and has been totally non judgmental when I've talked to her about delicate issues. I'm not really sure what people look for in a doctor, but I've been around medical people and settings my whole life -- both of my parents are doctors, as are my sister and brother-in-law -- and I would recommend Dr. Tisi to others. read more

I want to edit my below review. I received a message and call from Dr. Tisi this morning apologizing for how my situation was handled. She is helping me fix my billing issue. She recommended that when I or anyone else has a problem like this to contact the doctor directly, which I will be sure to do from now on. I really appreciate her quick response and feel much better now. :) "I have never experienced such poor customer service from the front staff of a doctors office. I never write reviews, but I feel that I have been treated with such a lack of consideration I don't want others to experience the same. The problem was with billing through my insurance. My appointment was billed incorrectly through the front office, and in such a way that insurance would not cover the appointment. I called the office once, they would give it to Bonnie to take care of and she would call me back. I called twice, same story. 3 times, again same story. 4th time, about 4 months later I am pissed and practically in tears with frustration. Same story and no one was any help, but they assured me that they would put a post it right on Bonnie's computer screen and she will definitely give me a call back. 2 weeks later and still no call. I no longer live in the area, but if I did, I would be in their office so they would have to deal with me to my face. They are rude and lazy and just do not make you feel welcome or treat you with the respect that all human beings deserve. At this point I am just paying my incorrect bill, but it really leaves me sick to my stomach. Please, don't go to Dr. Tisi. Goodbye Sutter Pacific and Dr. Malcolmson. I normally see Dr. G (who is pretty great, but unfortunately going to switch to One Medical after this unreasonable ordeal I went through) but he was out and I needed a same day appointment. I should have known better and had a gut feeling that things were too good to be true to see a doctor same day in this city or at least a good one that's not always booked out. I had a 3:40 p.m. appointment slot and was told to show up 15 minutes early. I entered the waiting room at 3:20 p.m., was called to my room around 3:55 p.m. and didn't see Dr. Malcolmson until 4:35 p.m....yes, you read that correctly, what...? NOT ONCE did a single nurse approach me to tell me she was running late. I even heard them through the door talking about closing down the lobby. HELLO! I was still in the room alone...did they forget about me?! Anyways, she came in looking frazzled beyond belief and was in and out in about 7-8 minutes. She "diagnosed" me with a common cold and prescribed me Mucinex (which she pronounces wrong), Flonase, and Claritin. Great, great, can I have my $40 co-pay back so I can go buy all that crap? I'm pretty sure I've experienced a common cold and it has never felt like this but okay. I called back the next day to explain the situation and was told *maybe* I could come back in and see my regular doctor for a second opinion and wouldn't have to pay my co-pay again and that the site manager would be calling me back. I called back again the following day and the site manager told me I was on her "to-do" list for that day and that unfortunately Sutter Pacific cannot waive co-pays or reimburse me for the one I just had paid. But I could come in and see my original doctor again if I wanted and then I asked if there was someone else I could speak to. She gladly gave me another number for Sutter Pacific Quality Care line which is hilarious because you call it and you leave a message and the automated message tells you someone will get back to you in 30 days. AWESOME, SUTTER! GREAT JOB! TWO THUMBS UP! The healthcare system is clearly broken in America. I understand it isn't anyone's fault for how much my co-pay is, but why wouldn't I be able to see my original doctor if I'm still feeling terrible because I clearly wasn't diagnosed properly the first time after an unacceptable experience and be able to forgo paying another co-pay on top of the one I paid 48 hours previously? Seems like you would keep a lot more customers long term that way. From reading the other reviews, maybe she had an off day, but I don't know if I believe it. I followed Dr. Malcolmson to Sutter from BaySpring and I am glad I did. She has been my primary physician for over five years and I find her to be everything I hope for in a doctor. She is up on her game and also genuinely concerned about her patients. When I have had an acute problem I have been able to see her or another physician in her practice quickly and they have always helped me resolve any concerns I might have. Dr. Tisi was recommended to me by friends in a knowledgeable network. She is an extremely thorough physician -- one who is generous with her time, informative, with a compassionate manner that some may not grasp since she is also efficient and direct. If she doesn't agree with a patient, she explains why, but she really listens. I am not an easy case, with some complicated medical issues, but I felt I could share what I knew, inform her of the surgical opinions of others, and have a real conversation when I was actually very sick. I too am surprised to see the negative reviews as well as the nasty tone taken in one of them. Dr. Tisi is young (compared to me) and of course she doesn't have the experience of physicians practicing medicine for decades. But as one who has grown up in a family surrounded by doctors, I respect the openness and clear willingness to learn that she shows and her evident excellence in her work. While some staff like Vanessa and Claudia are excellent, there are certain organizational problems that may need some work in the reception area, but will certainly be worked out over time. The only reason I don't give Dr. Tisi 5 stars is that everytime I have an appointment, I wait in the room at least half an hour to an whole hour before I see her. Don't go on your lunch break. That being said: she's great! Very proactive and acknowledges your concerns. Yes, she doesn't "look" like a doctor but sometimes that's good. Just because she's young doesn't mean she's inexperienced or not smart. I keep going back. read more
