I don't know why some of the previous reviews mentioned that she wasn't very warm because I found the opposite to be the case. She was super friendly, warm and kind and she spent a lot of time with me to go over all of my health stats. I think she's a great doctor and I'm really lucky to be a patient of hers now. read more

I have been a patient under Dr. Newcomer for the last 3.5 years and I can confidently say she is magnificent. I truly mean this because I have a LOT of health issues so I see a lot of therapists and specialists, but she continues to be my North Star for treatment. Also, it's a good sign when several of SF's top specialists know her name (Dr. Grogan - Podiatrist, Dr. Kitt - Neurologist, Dr. Kangelaris - ENT). Dr. Newcomer is knowledgeable of so many conditions and keeps herself up-to-date on the most recent research and treatment methods. She is willing to dive into every aspect of my health and work with other practitioners outside of the one-medical network to make sure I am getting the best care possible. Beyond her capabilities as a Doctor, she's a really cool person. She's usually rockin bubble-gum pink hair and she's into cool music. She can be a fast talker and she'll definitely keep you in check if you just aren't prioritizing your health, but she's super supportive of you living your best life. Unlike other practitioners I've had in the past, she never slut shames, fat shames, or makes you feel wrong for having mental illness. Seriously, she's the best. Even outside of the a face-to-face appointment environment, she is unbelievably thorough. She always responds to my messages faster than I expect and follows up with me when I need lab work, shots, or anything else. Dr. Newcomer is a DO through and through. She has stood by the "whole person" philosophy through my entire tenure as her patient. I'm genuinely so grateful to have her as my number one health advocate and I don't know how I would have made it through these challenging years without her. read more

I'd like to echo some of the comments about Dr. Newcomer having a poor bedside manner. As a new One Medical patient, she was assigned to be my PCP, but I did not have a productive first appointment with her. I found her to be cold and unprofessional. She did not welcome me or introduce herself at all, which I found off-putting. Throughout the appointment I found her to be rather impatient, and I felt very uncomfortable and put on the spot. I expressed that I was a little uncomfortable. She ended the appointment rudely and abruptly. Needless to say, I will not be seeing her again. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Newcomer's for the past 2 years but after today's experience I will be looking for a new doctor who is more understanding. It is really disappointing to have such an unyielding and irrational policy of 1) not allowing the patient to come in for an appointment but imposing a charge despite the fact that patient is willing to come in; 2) charge the patient despite the fact that the patient's spot has now been filled. For those looking for a new doctor, I would seriously reconsider as the doctor and her staff are completely unreasonable. I would also urge new patients to read the reviews on the doctor's other business Peggy Newcomer and associates. A doctor should not be receiving consistent 1 stars in 2013 for her practice from various patients/former patients. read more

Dr. Newcomer is a wonderful doctor. She is very through and knowledgeable with great bedside manners. She discusses options and the +/- of each option. I drive a good distance to see her, she's worth it. One Medical doesn't support a variety of things that made her private practice exceptional (other types of practitioners in her office, etc.). Her decision to join One Medical vs maintaining her own practice is understandable but it's unfortunate on the patient side. I *highly* recommend her as your DO. read more

3 weeks ago I was sick. Sick sick sick sick sick. You know, one of those too-bad-to-be-a-cold but not-bad-enough-for-the-ER kind of sicknesses. I had read all these fantastic reviews about Dr. Newcomer on Yelp, so I decided to check it out. First of all, as a BRAND NEW PATIENT they got me an appointment THAT DAY. The receptionist was so nice on the phone! She acted like she really cared that I was sick and wasn't nasty about having to ask me to repeat the spellings of my name since my voice sounded like Darth Vader. The location really isn't great for ME since I live in the Upper Haight and this is in SOMA near downtown, but it's TOTALLY WORTH THE DRIVE. Parking is somewhat hard to find so make sure to bring lots of quarters since each quarter only gets you 5 min. I've been here twice and each time I've gotten in and out in about 30 minutes! Yes! Can you believe it? A doctors office where you don't have to WAIT??? Physician blasphemy! So back to the present day, 3 weeks after my initial appointment- SICK AGAIN. I usually HATE going to the doctor, but today I wasn't really upset about going in because I know how nice the people are and how hassle-free it is. Both times I went I didn't see Dr. Newcomer- instead I saw the NP, Megan, who is absolutely wonderful. She spent time with me, thoroughly asking me about ALL my symptoms. She's not one of these doctors that just prescribes you something to get you out the door. She asks how you feel about certain medications, etc. It's kind of like a collaborative effort. I like that. I honestly can't say enough great things about this place. The office is clean, neat, and the entire staff is so nice! I have never in my life been to a doctors office where I am treated with such kindness. So really, if you're sick, this is the place to go. read more

I did select Dr. Newcomer based on the reviews. However, my experience was not good. Peggy seems to be at least somewhat knowledgeable about health. Nonetheless, Peggy wasted my time by having me come to a scheduled appointment only to tell me that she had already decided not to provide service to me. Peggy told me that she would not service me due to complaint from Des about a phone conversation, I offered to apologize to the Des (her phone medical assistant) who complained to Peggy, but Peggy did not want to resolve the issue in a civil manner. She wasted my time, having me show up at the appointment, taking my time off work for this. Random acts of arrogance are not nice. Peggy may be nice to you, but that does not mean she is a fair and decent person. Peggy, I am sorry we could not resolve the issue in a mature manner. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Newcomer for several years with no issues until now. I liked her very much actually. But now she is "and associates" and it appears I've been pawned off on one. The issue I've been dealing with this week, a serious allergic reaction to poison oak, has been dealt with so poorly and unprofessionally, I am absolutely changing doctors after this. Calls aren't returned, and when they finally are hours and hours later, it's from an apathetic receptionist who has the most "who-gives-a-shit" tone ever heard in the medical industry. I called first thing in the morning with a worsened condition (rash had spread all over my face, eyes swollen completely shut) and by the close of the day, I'm finally getting called back and told to go to urgent care. Really unsatisfactory care...done with this place. Looking for a new doctor as soon as I can see again. 10-days in to this issue and I still cannot get an actual phone conversation with the doctor. I've had Dr Newcomer as my primary physician since moving to the city 4 years ago. Mostly I just go for a yearly checkup and though I had one other experience that left me with a bad taste in my mouth, this last experience left me (and friends, many of whom are in the healthcare field) somewhat speechless, so I think it's time for a new doctor. Let me first say that the regular receptionist (I forget her name), is an absolute doll. My last interaction with the office was with a fill-in. I had injured my foot while up north for the weekend. It was swollen and I was unable to bear weight. I went to Dr Newcomer that Monday, barely able to get into the office (dragging my foot through the halls, practically in tears). She examined me, told me I needed to go get xrays, stay off of my foot and get crutches. She didn't advise me to use an ace bandage or anything. Just asked if I wanted any pain meds. I asked where I should get crutches? "Walgreens, I think there's one on the corner that has them". Seemed odd but OK... so, I asked if someone could call for me to be sure they had them. "Well the receptionist already left for lunch." Are you kidding me!!? You can't make a simple call to Walgreens for me so that I don't hobble several city blocks, further injuring myself, to get crutches? (yes, I could call but there's no cell reception in her office and it seems like it would be a pretty easy thing to do for someone who already has the Walgreens pharmacy numbers handy). And guess what happened? The Walgreens I went to didn't have them. I was sent to another Walgreens around the corner to rent them. Got the crutches. Got a cab to the xray office. Did not hear from Dr Newcomer with results, so I called for them. She gave me the "wet read" (before they get the final results, they get a quick read). I fractured a bone. She said she'd call back when the final results came in, probably in a day or so. Didn't hear back. Called and the fill in receptionist took a message. I didn't hear back. I called again the next day. The fill in receptionist was rude and acted as if I was a pain / inconvenience. Sorry, just trying to get my results and find out if there's anything else I need to do!! She (the receptionist) called back and just told me that the final read was the same as the first and just to stay off of it and make a follow up appt in a couple of weeks. Eff that. I'm going to a podiatrist and never back to this office again. read more

I felt compelled to write because: 1) I read these reviews about Dr. Newcomer right here on Yelp, and 2) She did something I thought impossible: Got my wife to actually "see a doctor". This is probably the first non-patient review of Dr. Newcomer's practice. Based on my observations, everything you've read here on Yelp is spot-on accurate. (* The Challenge *) Get my wife to see a doctor. This was hurdle #1. My wife comes from a family of "there's nothing wrong with me". I'm not sure if it's denial or concealment. Or inherited stubbornness. My wife's first foray into the Organized Medical Maze was with an OB-GYN, a "Primary Care Physician", a Physician's Assistant, endocrinologists and a psychiatrist. The end result? Inconclusive. But the evidence was undeniable. "You've got to see someone," I told my wife. Where on earth was I going to find someone? They say your best bet is to get a referral from family and friends. All turned up blank, or the doctors weren't accepting new clients. (* Yelp to the Rescue! *) I'd never heard of Yelp before until someone we knew turned us on to it. Found Dr. Newcomer's review page here and I thought "this is impossible. How can some get so many positive reviews?" First, the administrative staff is very helpful and patient. My wife keeps mentioning someone named "Janet" that even seems to remember her details. (* Easing that Doctor-Phobia thing *) To help with my wife's anxiety/doctor-phobia, I accompanied my wife to that first visit. My wife's fears melted away quickly; Dr. Newcomer was warm and engaging. The first appointment seemed MUCH longer than the normal fast-food style doctor visits of the past. She took the time to listen to my wife's medical history and chief complaint, and didn't "dumb down" the details. Dr. Newcomer ordered a battery of tests. "Oh, here we go again. We've done this before." Except this time, she asked the lab for something different than the usual glucose, cholesterol, etc. We ended up discovering something none of my wife's other health professionals thought of looking for. (* Bedside manner *) I've seen some doctors with simply HORRIBLE bedside manner. Dr. Newcomer is in a class of her own. In subsequent appointments, she did not change; she rejoiced with my wife when the lab results came back negative for some things. And, she also took the time to admit when she wasn't 100% sure why the medications weren't fully effective over the past few months- but did not act smug about it. In fact, she excused herself for a brief moment to consult with a pocket reference book, and in the end encouraged my wife to allow the medications to take effect, and promised to do some more research about the matter. Imagine that. A health professional who isn't afraid to show they might not have all the answers off the top of their heads. Medicine isn't about finding the quick fixes, but about healing. My wife's condition is no slam-dunk and we're not out of the woods YET. But, I am reassured that my wife has a medical professional who has her interests at heart. The fact that she's somehow eased my wife's fear of doctors is worth it! read more

I had high hopes. New city/ New Doctor. Excited to find a woman doctor and the staff was so friendly. I appreciated that they told me where to park and warned me about towing in front of the building. Unfortunately, Dr. Newcomer was not available for an appointment so I saw her assistant. Had a reaction to the meds, needed to call while out of town on a weekend for new meds to fix the side effect of the old meds. They were closed and after several calls I got Dr. Newcomer. She wasn't friendly and needed to be called again from the pharmacy to get the new prescription. read more

Dr. Newcomer is friendly and personable as my new Doctor of 2 years. I get appointments when needed and have had good referrals. The staff is friendly in person, but when I call for follow up for Dr. Newcomer, I get a very generic "I'll send her an email" and she can get back in touch. Or ask me if I "can you make an appointment" after I explain the Dr. told me to call her if I needed more help. A little empathy could go a long way here - or why cant they just tell me she will call me back if with a patient, or when to call if she has a free moment? That is frustrating. She did call me back though at the end of the day, and called in an urgent perscription ASAP. I recently received a Rx that hasn't cured my skin allergy, and was told to see a specialist. This was relayed to me by someone at the office (the receptionist? I clerk? an aid?) from the Dr's response to my 'message'. They told me they couldn't refer me to any dermatologists when I asked if they new anyone. This mystery person asked me a follow up question that made me realize after I hung up that she had no medical knowledge at all (she asked me if I was taking antihistamines which I said - no just benadryl - and she said ok. Benadryl IS a antihistamine so she didn't catch that) Overall I recommend her. But if you need a specialist prepare to find it on your own and if you have any follow ups it will be relayed through staff messages until she is free. read more

Let me state this plainly and clearly. I have always HATED GOING TO THE DOCTOR. But here I am in my early 30s with a small list of problems - probably worsened by my decade-long refusal to have a regular physician. I finally broke down and combed yelp for a Doctor that I hoped to be able to create a relationship with. I found Dr. Newcomer. I suppose I should give Yelp as much credit as the doctor. Otherwise, finding her would have been impossible. She's fantastic, down to earth and practical. She trusts my opinion about my body. She's super easy to talk to. She is willing to keep working on problems until we get them right. Dr. Newcomer seems legitimately concerned about what's going on with me. And she remembers me and my health issues every time. The staff is awesome. I had acute bronchitis and they squeezed me in that very day, even though they were booked. They respect your time. If your appointment is at 2:30, you're checked in and talking to the doctor by 2:35. You will not sit around in waiting rooms or the exam room, waiting forever for the doctor. Now I actually look forward to going to the doctor because I know that someone caring is going to help me get that much closer to having my blood pressure and other issues on track. I hesitate to write this review for selfish reasons. I don't want everyone to start going to her. I had my first appointment with Dr. Newcomer yesterday. She is the most personable Dr. I have ever met. . She put me at ease and I felt very comfortable with her. She was very attentive and answered all my questions and concerns. I am SO happy to have finally found my PCP. I've been searching for a good Dr., specifically DO (as I have had great experiences with them and I like their philosophy) and Dr. Newcomer is it. I sadly had to update my review from 5 to 4 stars. My first visit was unbelieveably great. Dr. Newcomer was amazing with me, easy to talk to, nonjudgmental, thorough, caring... her staff was friendly and helpful. I was in medical heaven. Cut to 3 months later. I'm sick. Like dizzy falling down can't walk sick. I call for an appointment, explain my symptoms and they unapologetically offer me one 6 weeks later! 6 weeks later?!? I asked if Dr. Newcomer ever sees actual sick people since clearly they can't get an appointment... Most dr. offices will save an hour or 2 of appointment time every day for last minute emergency sick people... but not Dr. Newcomer's office. To their credit, they call two days later with a cancellation, but by then I had gone back to my old but available doctor who DID have sick person appointments set aside for things like this and I got in the next day. The way it should be when you are dizzy falling down sick!! read more

I just felt compelled to write my response to Amy A's review, which is basically not true. I have been with Dr. Newcomer for a little bit more than a half of year and she is convenient because I work in the same building. She is a great, patient and very nice doctor, so I have no complaints with Dr. Newcomer personally... but in her review, Amy A. (the favorite reviewer, the one on the top) says "If your appointment is at 2:30, you're checked in and talking to the doctor by 2:35. You will not sit around in waiting rooms or the exam room, waiting forever for the doctor, " which is so NOT TRUE!!!! I have seen Dr. Newcomer 3-4 times by now and every SINGLE time, I had to wait for 20-30 minutes. Maybe I got lucky the last time because it took only 15 or so. I usually don't mind waiting in the receptionist area because when I can scan through magazines but when I am seated in the private room and it takes another 30 minutes for the doctor to get to me, it's plainly annoying! And every single time I forgave her because Dr. Newcomer is so nice and you can just not forgive her. She seems to be too caring about her patients, so she gets distracted with the ones before me. Or maybe the receptionists schedule her appointments so tight when she runs from one to another? Who knows... anyway, Amy A., you just got very vey lucky and just wait until your luck will run out, then you will be changing your review here. When it comes to making an appointment or dealing with the receptionists, forget about them. It's a disaster! I think they have one very nice lady upfront and another is a total jerk. Don't ask her for any kind of advice or any question because her answer will always be that she cannot give me a medical advice. She has been always rude to me even if I always nice to her. When it comes to the prescription refills, my last experience was like this. I left a message for the nurse and when I called back next week, I found out that they never received my voicemail in the first place (the second time when it happened to me). Then I called the pharmacy to ask to send the request. A few days later I found out that they never received the fax from the pharmacy. Can you believe this????!!!!! The nurse never returned of any of my calls, even if I was promised by a receptionist that she would call me, when she get my prescription ready. Eventually, I got a refill, althought I though that I would have to go without my medication for a couple of days. Another headache for no reason. Also it is almost impossible to make an appointment with Dr. Newcomer. It seems that she is booked until the end of the year. So even if I get urgent matters, sometimes I choose to go to the city clinic and not to deal with any of that receptionist crap instead. At the end, I will give Dr. Newcomer 4 stars. She is great and I cannot say anything bad about her... but dealing with the office? Every single time I have second thoughts whether it is worth it. Has the world gone mad and such patient treatment is acceptable nowadays? I have a solution. Dr. Newcomer should open her own practice or get a job in the better place because this place doesn't deserve her. And I am pretty sure that she would not lose any of her patients because I would definitely go and continue seeing her in her new place no matter where it is in the Bay Area. read more

I also found Dr Peggy through Yelp (thank you, previous reviewers!) and had a totally positive experience with her. One interesting note is that she is a doctor of Osteopathy - which used to be like chiropractic, but now means that she studied a whole-body approach to medicine IN ADDITION to traditional GP training. Dr Peggy also told me that she always schedules longer appointment times (double for new patients) than the industry average. And I really appreciated the relaxed pace and easy tone of the whole process. I can be sure it helped my blood-pressure readings! Clear, caring, effective communication is the norm at every step. When I got standard test results back by mail, I really appreciated her detailed notes. And since the results were good and she told me so, I felt like I'd just gotten an A+! My friend found Dr Peggy on Yelp while really sick, and although they couldn't fit him into her appointment book, the staff offered to have him see a fancy nurse (whatever the ones with more-than-average training are called). And while he was there Dr Peggy came by to see him anyway. It all worked out shiny. read more

I have been bouncing around at One Medical for some time without a dedicated Dr. until I found Peggy. She is excellent. On top of the latest research and health news - no nonsense - thinks outside the box when it comes to helping finding alternative solutions. I can highly recommend her. read more

I called to make another appointment and they DID call back this time but I was in the other room. But now I have to wait ANOTHER day to make an appointment. This is silly... Wonderful. She did the most thorough and thoughtful examination I've had in a long time (hrm, sounds odd...). But really, I haven't had a doctor actually listen to me like that in a long time. I'm athletic and rarely sick, and when I am the symptoms are very minute. She listened and asked questions, she explained her thinking, and clearly laid out the plan of attack on what's making me feel ill. Dr Newcomer is without a doubt worth 5 stars. Minus one star because the office staff is not so with it I legitimately get excited to go to the doctor now because Dr. Newcomer is so friendly, non judgmental, and fun to talk to. She is absolutely wonderful! Way back in February though, I needed the office to send me an updated letter of medical necessity and I think I've been calling every week to remind them to no avail. Sometimes I leave a voicemail and sometimes I get an actual person but they always say something to the effect of "Oh yeah! Let's face it--going to the Dr.--even just for the "routine" check up--can be a real pain. I am tired of being talked down to, "hurried" through my questions and concerns, and having prescriptions thrown at me without even a second thought. Dr. Newcomer is NONE of these. I am sooo grateful I followed my friend's advice and made an appointment with her. I really couldn't understand driving ALL the way to SF for a Dr.'s appointment, but I was desperate--NOW I can! If I move a cross the country I will keeping Dr. Newcomer as my Physician. Her office manager is amazing, very kind and friendly--very personable. Dr. Newcomer did all aspects of the check up herself--I wasn't on a conveyor belt of nurses weighing me, taking my temp, taking my blood pressure--Dr. Newcomer did all of that and it makes a difference, believe me. She listens respectfully, she advises respectfully--to be treated like a thinking adult!!! And by a Dr.!!! imagine that!!!--and she just has a very kind, easy, caring energy. Making time for doctor's appointments is a pain if you work a lot, so when I was on the hunt for a new PCP I was specifically looking for one within walking distance of my office that could handle my "feminine care" needs as well. Scheduling an appointment was super easy, although the appointment hours for first time patients are a little limited. At my first appointment, I had to fill out a bunch of information electronically. It was all pretty straightforward but there was A LOT of it. It would be better if they could send this to you before your appointment. Dr. Newcomer was super nice and I felt totally comfortable with her. I asked her a couple questions and it seemed like she knew what she was talking about :-) She referred me to a lab for some bloodwork and as promised they mailed me results with handwritten comments within 2 weeks. I love Dr Newcomer and her staff. All of them are extremely knowledgeable and competent. I haven't had any insurance issues that weren't resolved immediately. Dr Newcomer is patient with my 10001 questions and she always explains things thoroughly. Though she's busy, I never feel like I'm sucking up her time. Dr. Newcomer is very friendly, honest and down to earth. While still keeping an examination fun and lighthearted she was able to convey to me all the information I needed in a way I would understand it. Plus, she did the whole examination for taking my vitals to finishing it up. She didn't have a nurse do some of the things and I really liked that personal touch. Dr. Newcomer spent what felt like a lot of time with me, reviewing my medical history and discussing the issue for which I came to visit her. Not only did she listen to everything I told her, she provided helpful and thoughtful responses. She is very friendly and easy to talk to. I started seeing Dr. Newcomer years ago and have never been to a better GP doctor. She really spends time with you, asks you questions and takes a more holistic approach to medicine than other doctors I've seen. She'll consider the options, discuss them with you and let you be the guide of your medical treatment. I also see Dr. Greene and Bobby in the PT department (see my review under Chiro-Medical) and when you run into someone in the halls, they remember you, even if you haven't seen them in awhile. I hadn't seen Dr. Newcomer in a while and I ran into her and she chatted with me briefly. Every time I visit, she asks how my husband is doing. Honestly, the doctors and office staff feel like family! Everyone here seems to enjoy their job and are happy to be here. read more

After many doctors in the fidi district, I've finally found one who is just steps away from my office, clean, quiet, and most important of all, great bedside mannars. Dr. Newcomer and Megan Dasher were both fabulous. They are easy to talk to, they ask questions and they don't sell you to specialists. They are concern about your overall well-being and not just the illness you are dealing with at the moment. If you work in fidi and would love a one stop doctors office that can handle your obgyn needs as well, this is the place to go! read more

Dissatisfied with the bedside manner and care I received from Dr. Newcomer. She started the appointment lecturing me to stay with the same provider within the One Medical network (even though their Philosophy is quality care where convenient). Her condescending tone and questions were all over the board and the appointment had zero direction. I left the appointment feeling hopeless and felt she had an "is what it is" attitude to my concerns. After my appointment she was supposed to send me a referral for an MRI.... and I never heard anything for a week. When I did hear news I was told I couldn't get approval and would need an X-ray and physical therapy first (both things I've already done and we discussed...). Will not be returning and will not recommend either One Medical or Dr. Newcomer. read more
