It has been many years since I was treated by Joe. At times he seemed to go far beyond what one would normally expect from a practitioner, but he also seemed extraordinarily thin-skinned and threatened to stop treating me a couple of times because he imagined some kind of danger where none existed. What ultimately happened was far more disturbing. I was bedridden, extremely vulnerable, and during one treatment I opened up emotionally while he was working with me. Nothing I shared was unusual or inappropriate. He walked out of the room. I assumed he had gone to put coins in the parking meter, but he never came back. Afterward, he never responded to my emails or phone calls. I was desperate for some explanation and closure after being left that exposed, and at the time I still wanted him to continue working with me. I have lived with a complex structural medical problem for many years and have encountered a great deal of cruelty and unprofessional behavior, but Joe's conduct still stands out. Abandoning a bedridden patient in an acutely vulnerable moment without a word, and then refusing all communication, was profoundly cruel, immature, and unprofessional. Unfortunately, I also think this reflects on the practice as a whole. I wish Mari provided better professional guidance to ensure that a patient was never treated this way. There are many glowing reviews here, and perhaps others had very different experiences. This was mine, and after all these years I believe it deserves to be part of the record. read more

Quality of care is exceptional. I've been a patient of both mother and son for over 10 years. I had a serious shoulder problem and a jaw misalignment--both were corrected and the problems never returned. read more

I thought I would get manual manipulation based on the reviews and I walked out with almost nothing done and in more pain than when I arrived. read more

I had been going through a cycle of sleeping from midnight to 3AM and staying awake until 4AM. One of my worst nights I stayed up from 3AM to 7AM. For other reasons, as well, I felt that my nervous system was off. Fortunately that morning I had my weekly appointment with Joe. He worked on my parasympathetic nervous system and that night I slept 7 hours. Heaven. I only want people with the best soul energy working on my body, and Joe's energy is exquisite. read more

I can't recommend Dr Joe enough. I was in town for a few weeks and had persistent pain in my sacrum, SI joint and right shoulder blade area. He shifted things so deeply in just one session. If you've never experienced Osteopathic Manual Manipulative Therapy, please try it. Dr. Joe's rates are extremely reasonable, especially for the benefit. No shade, but I've never had such success with chiropractic treatments and my understanding is that Osteopathic tmts work more with the soft tissues, so gentle adjustments are more impactful and are much more likely to hold. He works on nervous system issues as well; think mind-body connection in regards to mental health. So grateful I found his practice - I feel so much better. read more

Joe is an incredible practitioner. His hands are magic and his attention and care are very healing. He has helped me with chronic pain in my hips and also an intense bout of TMJ pain. Coulddn't recommend more! read more

I have had eight sessions with Joe at Hayama Osteo-Therapy, and I cannot adequately express my gratitude for his expertise, wisdom, and gentle care. My issues have never felt like quick fixes, and yet I feel great progress. The pain throughout my body and the cramping in my feet are gone. I have had a lot of bodywork in my life, but nothing really did the trick until I came to Joe for fascia work. I have enormous respect for him as a healer, and the brilliant method he has mastered. Each week I leave the calm of his office awestruck and happy...already looking forward to the following session. I have not felt this consistently good in years. Joe and Hayama Osteo-Therapy have my highest recommendation, and deepest appreciation. read more

Joe Hayama's work is nothing short of life changing. After decades of chronic pain from old injuries and surgeries, his care and expertise has completely resolved many long standing issues. He is calm and conscientious, and the office space is very peaceful and clean. In addition to relieving pain, his work also improved my sleep and some chronic digestive issues I've suffered from for years. I am utterly grateful to have found such a stellar practitioner, and I bet you will be too! read more

I was referred to Joe Hayama from a friend. I have been going through a terrible divorce with an abusive husband and found I was living in fight or flight mode for over 6 months. Within two sessions my level of calm and serenity started coming back. I cannot thank Joe and his work enough. Since then my 88-year-old father has been seeing him for weak and painful hamstrings and his work has helped my father walk without pain for the first time in many months. I highly recommend this work. read more

I am so grateful I found Mari to help in healing a shoulder injury. She has further helped with other areas of pain (knees, hip etc). I highly recommend Hayama Osteo Therapy to help heal your pain away! read more

Havent been back in a while but if you suffer from chronic pain or illness they can get you back in shape. They helped me get rid of so much inflammation and helped my fiancée get back on her feet after some serious nerve pain. I'm a huge believer in Osteopathy now 11/10 read more

When all else failed, including western medicine and an $11,000 ER visit, as well as acupuncture, chiropractic and other modalities, Joe has helped me turn things around. Joe has a confident, yet gentle touch. The work may seem subtle but it has profoundly positive effects. Joe also gave me effective ideas to incorporate into my daily routine. He clearly wants you to be able to take control of and manage your own well being. Prices are very reasonable and the office environment is calm and soothing. I highly recommend Joe's work without hesitation. read more

Updated Review: I started coming here over a year ago for back problems and pain and Mari helped me A TON in getting back into shape in a natural way. About 6 months ago she recommended I start seeing her son Joe as he is extremely knowledgeable as well. I was worried me and Joe would not be a good fit... but I was wrong, Joe is great! Joe, like his mother, knows the body very well and has a lot of information to share with his clients. Thanks to Joe, I have stayed mostly pain free (a far cry from where I was before) and he has taught me a lot. He has a way of connecting one part of the body with another and is willing to explain the what, where and why of an issue. My mom has also started seeing Joe recently and she has seen a ton of improvement with her specific set of issues as well. All in all, I'm grateful to have found both Mari and Joe and couldn't recommend them enough as they have changed my life (and my mom's) for the better. read more

I came to Mari due to continued back issues after having surgery a couple of years ago. She is both a skilled and intuitive healer and gem of a human. I am in awe at how the subtlety of the work reaps such benefit. I particularly love the cranio-sacral work and literally feel my nervous system readjusting when she is working on me. She continues her education and stays up-to-date on the latest practices yet also is informed by decades of study with master practitioners. I only wish more people in the US were trained in these modalities. Looking forward to continuing to work with her and potentially her son Joe as well. I wish I could see her every week! read more

I have tried many treatments such as chiropractic, acupuncture and sport massage for my neck injury and shoulder pain in years. It was no luck until I met Mari. Her therapy was very different from any of them. She seemingly just touched my shoulder, neck and head but it worked! She healed me. I have been seeing her for two months and now I am back to my regular activities such as golf, bikram yoga and martial art. I highly recommend her to anyone who suffer from pain. read more

I had bad lower-back pain caused from sitting long hours and suffered 2.5 months of miserable pain. I was not able to lift anything heaver than my iPhone. I couldn't walk without a cane and I couldn't drive. I was VERY frustrated. Into several weeks of misery, I heard about Mari from my wife's friend. I read & studied her web site and I read something in the effect of "This technique use gentle touch and manipulation of the musculoskeletal system to restore the balance that the body naturally offer". It made a lot of sense to me and I made an appointment immediately. When I arrived, she asked me a lot of right questions, made sure to go over every square inch of my posture, balance of my sketch system and even took time to get to know my life style which most doctors will not do. Her treatment was super gentle, there was no cracking and twisting of my bodies & that had me think to my self "This is too gentle, Is this going to work??" BUT then the something unbelievable happened. After the first treatment, my pain level went from 9 to 1.5!!!! I went back 1 more times to see her I felt ZERO pain and I was back to normal activities such as walking my dog, driving to places!! Her treatment is remarkable. I still see her on regular bases to have my body in good balanced state. I highly recommend her to anyone who suffer from pain. read more

Mari at Hayama Osteo-Therapy is a wonderful osteopath. I found her online after just having arrived to the Bay, needing to continue osteopathy treatment from back home. She is extremely rigorous in her assessments, and she is gentle and kind in her work. Mari will always explain what she's doing if I ask, and I also really appreciate her sense of humour! I would highly recommend her for musculoskeletal work, and work on the nervous and digestive systems. A truly holistic care practitioner! read more

I have experienced both Mari and Joe Hayama. They are truly wonderful. They both possess the heart and hands to be healers, with the knowledge of the anatomy and interrelated systems that is exceptional. I feel like my care from them in having a healthy structure is essential for both chronic and acute body situations. I have had really deep revelations in my body thanks to them! Thank you so much Mari and Joe!! read more

Mari and her son Joe are AMAZING ! I met her about 4 years ago and was needing to go twice a week for awhile for my sciatica and lower back pain. The most helpful first session I have ever had. Mari is so knowledgeable with the world of Eastern Medicine. While examining me she found that my GUT was also involved with some of my pain, and like the chiropractor I have seen before, strongly suggested I avoid : SUGAR Dairy and Gluten . I know I need to pay more attention to the foods I put into my body. Mari was able to help me with some home stretches and I then came only once a week and then once a month. She relieved me from sciatica and then we were able to move to some other physical and mental issues. I would also see Joe and it was nice to hear that he and Mari are on the same page of examining and solving my issues. Joe was great with maneuvering my body and holding pressure points ( sometimes very painful ) I always felt better and walked taller after a session with either one of them. :-) read more

Mari is a very intuitive & gentle practitioner, with amazing results. I first went to her to see if she could address my decade+ issue of fibromyalgia. Now, I've been through the gamut of massage therapists, and numerous various other therapies over the years to try to manage this. Even though I'd get relief during the sessions, once I got off the table, the pain (& fatigue) would still be there Over these last few years with Mari's work, I've noticed that I have more energy, and the pain is not as insidious. Mari also provides useful tips for nutrition, supplements, posture, exercises, gizmos, etc.(that she's personally tried herself) without ever trying to sell you anything. In addition, because I do try to stay active, but also have an old low back injury, I seem to be susceptible to various muscle pulls, strains, etc. Each time this happens, once I see Mari, she uncannily seems to be able to get to the root of the problem and provide relief---no exaggeration!; she's gotten me functional on many occasions. On top of all this, her fees are very reasonable for the expertise that she provides (& she has a great spirit/sense of humor:). read more

Joe has been very helpful in treating my chronic tailbone pain. He is thoughtful and spends time putting the pieces together of what could be contributing to my pain. I'm so happy that I get to see him during this harrowing experience. read more

I've been seeing Mari for over five months now after suffering from lower back pain and sciatica for nearly six months. By the time I saw Mari for the first time on the recommendation of another friend, I was desperate from non-stop intense nerve pain caused by disc extrusion. Mari's treatment approaches using osteopathy and cranio-sacral techniques were gentle and soothing, but very effective. Now, I am pain free and feel like I've got my life back again. And it is such a great feeling to know that I don't have any pain when I wake up in the morning until I go to bed at night. I highly recommend Mari for anyone who has lower back pain and severe sciatica. read more

I've been seeing Mari for lower back pain for nearly a year now after a terrible experience with a chiropractor who only made the pain worse. Mari uses osteopathy and cranio-sacral techniques which are much gentler and makes the body more receptive to the interventions. She is very intuitive and can swiftly detect where the basic root causes of the pain reside, and work from there. I feel like every minute is well spent and leave feeling like an adjustment has been made to enhance my alignment. I highly recommend Mari to anyone who has lower back pain. read more

Mari is very good- I went to see her a few times now and it my what I thought never to go away neck and upper shoulder problem seem much much better- I tried everything in the world before and nothing seemed to give me long term relief. I had a bicycle accident and suffered 2 months of pain in my shoulder and arm. I was not able to cook and even brash my teeth for entire month. And I was very frustrated that even though I tried many doctors like sports medicine, and chiropractics and spend a lots of money, I was not able to increase my mobility at all. Into 3 months of my miserable life, I found about Mari. I made an appointment the same day. I had no idea about her treatment but I just wanted to tried it. THEN the miracle happened. After the first treatment, my arm felt really good and I went back two more times and I was able to do normal activity without pain!! It was unbelievable. With 5 or 6 treatment, I was able to go back to dance practice with no sever distractions! Now I go to see her every week to maintain my body since I am very active and training a lot. I highly recommend her to everyone who has any kind of pain or discomfort in your body. You will find her therapy is the most rewarding one. It is guaranteed!! read more

Mari and her son Jo are both gifted healers who have immense integrity and humility . I highly recommend both of them . read more

My teenage daughter has been suffering with chronic and debilitating head pain from migraines for 2 years. I took her to pediatricians, neurologists and a neurosurgeon but they could not prevent or take away the headaches. Even though they could never identify the reason for her headaches, they prescribed various dangerous drugs experimentally and told us, that through trial and error, they might someday find the correct drug to stop her pain. This seemed unacceptable to me, but out of desperation we started down the drug path. After suffering through horrible side effects from the first prescribed medication, I knew I needed to look elsewhere. Thankfully, a friend recommended Mari, so we tried her treatments and finally my daughter has relief! Mari quickly identified the root causes of her head pain (it was nothing the traditional medical community had ever considered), treated her issues, and my daughter remains pain free after Mari's third treatment. Mari is very wise, intuitive and kind. She communicates well and knows the importance of treating the whole body. She understands the teen-aged child's needs on a physical, social, mental and emotional level and incorporates advice as she guides and treats the body to balanced, good health. Mari has been a blessing for our family! read more

I started seeing Mari for what I thought was chronic pain. Her treatment is gentle and different. She's also a compassionate therapist. After several months of her treatment and famous Dr. John Sarno's book Heating Back Pain, my pain was gone, and I was able to get back to my normal activities. I am looking forward to snowboard this winter. read more

Mari has magic hands. With her therapeutic skills and natural intuition, she is able to heal the suffering of her clients. I am a 70 year old woman with arthritis. My visits to Mari enable me to function at a higher level, and I am able to be more active with and help care for my grandchildren. It is as if when my muscles, nerves, and bones get out of sync, she is able to realign me. I now see Mari weekly, but as I continue to improve, we can decrease the frequency of our sessions. It is a relief to know that there is someone I can turn to when the pain is bad and my functioning decreases. read more
