She was extremely knowledgable and competent in forging a plan for me to help in each stage of the IVF process. I really appreciated my experience here. I think I was an "open-minded skeptic" coming for my first ever acupuncture. The approach to talking about my injury was "accessible" to my "western medicine" upbringing. And most importantly: my third visit was like turning the switch off for my pain. I probably had a pinched nerve in my neck, but due to delays seeing a pain specialist through my primary care, I was trying anything. I ultimately was seeing a "western medicine" doctor and Tao to Wellness at the same time. But the timing of my pain shutting off is strongly suggestive that acupuncture played a big part in shortening the duration (which my "western medicine" pain specialist had suggested would be possible). Dr. Kim is a miracle worker! I've had chronic back pain around my shoulder blade (where I hold stress) for over a year. I worked with Emily Edmonds for a few months, and in that short time, she was able to help relieve the horrific period cramps I had had for years. My doctor prescribed me painkillers, which I was afraid to become dependent on, but were the only thing that made the pain manageable. Four weeks ago, when I went in for my first appointment to see Emily Edmonds, my discomfort and pain levels were at an all time high. I had been dealing with residual pain for close to two years at that point, from a mixture of different injuries and stress. I had exhausted all options with my primary care doctor, had tried all sorts of PT exercise, and medications, but nothing seemed to alleviate the pain. This was my last ditched effort that ultimately proved to be the best decision I ever made for my health and overall well-being. After my second treatment, with a combination of PT and stretches, I started noticing a difference. They are all extremely professional, knowledgeable, honest, and caring. After my first visit, my review was going to be three stars. After my second visit, they get bumped up a star. At 36 weeks pregnant, I found out my baby was breech. At 37 weeks, we scheduled an external cephalic version at the hospital to try to flip him around. It was unsuccessful, and all of the Kaiser doctors and nurses suggested that I try acupuncture. After doing some searching on Yelp, I landed on Tao to Wellness. The number one reason I chose them was the well-laid-out website, with a link to a peer-reviewed journal article about a blind study over a period of years and how moxibustion can work for flipping a baby into the head-down position. The website also makes for easy appointment setup. I was able to fill out all of my information online and had an appointment that worked with my schedule. On the day and time of my appointment (I was 37 weeks 3 days), I truly thought I was just going to receive moxibustion. My acupuncturist, Nikole, started by learning a little more about me and my health history, and she actually placed a couple needles! It was my first experience with acupuncture, and it didn't hurt. I thought it was going to be a more "quiet" experience, but Nikole chatted with me the whole time she was placing the needles, and then let me rest for about 20 minutes with some quiet music. When she came back in, we were going to do the moxibustion, but the clinic only had a 2-inch piece left of the moxa (note: this was smokeless moxa), so instead she showed me how to use it at home and let me keep the moxa. She also gave me a pamphlet about different poses I could do at home to help get my son to flip (similar to the information that can be found on the Spinning Babies website). Honestly, since I came in specifying I was most interested in the moxibustion, I felt like that part of the appointment was most rushed, and I was disappointed that the moxa stick was so small (she said she would have given me a full piece if they were stocked). I was able to get two sessions out of the moxa she gave me (note: I bought more at a Chinese herbalist in Albany). For this reason, my original review would have been three stars. The next week (38 weeks 3 days), I scheduled another appointment with Nikole. I was going to be coming from a chiropractic appointment on the other side of Berkeley, so I let Nikole know I might be a little late. Ugh--evening traffic in Berkeley is no joke. I was nearly 30 minutes late, but Nikole still let me come in, and she had time to place some needles before her next patient came in. Whew!! For this reason, they get an extra star from me. Nikole was great about working with me being late. So, did my baby flip? No. Even though I bought more moxa from the herbalist and did moxibustion for about 5 or 6 days, it didn't work for us. That's not to say I don't believe in moxibustion, just that it didn't work for us. If I had started chiropractic, spinning babies poses, and acupunture/moxibustion at 35 weeks when I first found out my son was breech, maybe the combination would have worked. We ended up having a c-section at 39 weeks, and he was pretty big at 7.5lbs, so I think he was just comfy where he was at and he was too big to flip on his own. Pricing? It's fine, I guess. Kind of expensive, but I don't think it's unreasonable. I may return in a few weeks after I heal from my c-section! read more

I found this wonderful place on the way to my favorite shopping spot in Berkeley. It was very easy to begin my acupuncture and my therapist asks me how am I doing/feeling, which is nice in the age of Covid, when many appointments are short and rushed. After the needles are applied, I listen to soothing sounds of bell gently chiming or water flowing which causes me to drift into a relaxing snooze. If you prefer, the table can be heated according to your comfort. They also offer herbal remedies and massage. So, go and check them out if you wish to feel better in the skin you're in!!! read more

My mom raved about Tao to Wellness for quite some time before I finally made an appointment with Christina, and I really had no idea what to expect. Before I began seeing her twice a week I had lower and upper back pain, headaches, stomach aches, sleeping problems, low energy levels, anxiety, you name it. The only reason why I even began going was because I had heard that acupuncture could help with depression. I didn't think it would alleviate all the emotional and physical pains I had been experiencing. After doing much research, I finally decided to go to an acupuncturist when traditional Western treatment was not enough. I was extremely scared of needles but fed up with my severe allergies, headaches, back pains and general sluggishness. Kara is warm, relaxed, patient and knowledgeable and helped to cure and/or reduce the symptoms of my ailments - and my needle-phobia, which is no easy feat! The office is so cozy and clean I felt like I was being "pampered" every time I went. Sadly, I had to stop going after 10+ treatments due to the price - which is a tad on the high end. For this, I would have given them 4 out of 5. However, Kara and Christina have started a Community Clinic some time ago to accommodate those who may not be able to afford a private visit or do not mind being treated in a group setting. I went here because we were having trouble getting pregnant. I went for about three months once a week. It was a wonderful experience. I really feel like it was one piece of a very complex puzzle. Without it, I am sure I would not have finally achieved pregnancy. I am 5 months pregnant now and have had almost a completely pain free pregnancy. Kara does acupuncture. Kara does nutrition. Kara does TAT. Kara saves the world. Well, almost. I started going to Kara in the fall of 08 for TMJ issues. This was not a normal clicking jaw irritation TMJ-this was painful, jaw splitting, ear piercing, gruesome, go-ahead-and-kill-me-now pain that woke me up in the mornings. I cannot stress to you how much the pain incapacitated me. After 3 weeks of treatment 2 days a week I was virtually pain-free. Wow. Now that's amazing. I've continued to see Kara, because I realized other things about my health were improving as well. Problems that I have had for my entire adult life and had decided to just put up with. Kara is caring, honest and down to earth. She will tell you what she can help you with and what she thinks you need to see a western physician for. One example: My digestive system has always been a little iffy. Just not happy. Kara treated me with a few very inexpensive herbs, a few dietary suggestions and weekly acupuncture. I feel better than I have in 10 years. I have been a Pepsi addict since I first drank the stuff. I would drink 5+ Pepsi's a day. Well, I know it's not good for my weight or my cholesterol. Kara introduced me to TAT. I truly didn't believe in it. However- I have had several TAT sessions and although I still drink Pepsi, I only drink one a day. Also, I have greatly decreased my sugar intake, started cooking, exercising and enjoying life again. Hmmm, could it be the TAT? Really, no one wants to admit they have any mental issues on yelp, but I'll go ahead and admit that I've had my share of difficulties. Acupuncture and TAT have helped me tremendously with that as well. Honestly, my life has done a 180 since I started seeing Kara.
