Back in LA I paid $65 flat every time I went to the community acupuncture clinic there and always thought the price was incredibly inaccessible despite it's name. Because of the sliding price range with $30 being the lowest, I had incredibly low expectations but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that their quality of work in no way represents the price you pay. Jorge knew exactly what he was doing and I was so appreciative that he also explained why he was placing the needles where he was. Such a wonderful place for healing. I suffered with symptoms for months after having Covid in June 2022, and the regular, almost twice weekly treatments really helped me to a complete recovery. The nurturing from the healers was so supportive to me too. I still regularly see Mary Stewart, who is a gem! When you arrive, there are about 7 chairs set up spaciously, and you get set up wearing clothing, but rolling up your sleeves and pant legs, and needles are put there and in your ears and head. The providers spend about 10 minutes with you to check in and get needles set, then it is a peaceful environment with music to relax and maybe even take a nap. The care provided by the acupuncturists was far better than some of the care I received during my routine check-ups. Even the check-in process was quick and easy. I filled out a chart with my symptoms and watched a short video about what to expect before being seen by the provider. All that took less than 10min. My acupuncturist (sadly I don't recall her name) was very compassionate and professional. She was also kind and non-judgmental that I felt comfortable with her almost immediately. She calmed me down with it being my first experience, especially with my fear of needles. She told me that the needles were hair-thin and were a one-time use. After alleviating my stress, she continued to review my symptoms with me, reminding me along the way that this was a holistic practice. She asked about more than just my physical symptoms, but about my sleep and digestion as well. I wasn't aware of this but the road to becoming an acupuncturist isn't easy. It requires completing a 4-year master's program. Without understanding much about the practice, I decided to read a little more about it and I realized that there's a lot that goes into it. Used in traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture essentially stimulates different points of the body to help relieve pain. Yet, I have more to understand; all I know is that I had very restful sleep that night. One of the best night's sleep I had in awhile. But effects of treatment aren't the same for everyone. Getting treated for arthritis in the hands; seems to help relieve pain quite well. All practitioners I have had are experienced, respectful of my choices (no needles in my head) but it's best to find one you are comfortable with and schedule with them. I love the new location on Solano Ave. and was so happy to find Mary still there. BAP seems to have imported the best of the old location (calm interior, excellent care) to the new! Lots of very close street parking for up to 90 minutes (and BAP treatments are 45 minutes) and stepping outside to a calm and peaceful shopping district is great. So much better than the old location on University Ave. by MLK where it was hard to park, and anoisy, chaotic street environment was just outside. read more

Jolene is amazing (she gets 5 stars) and the group practice is generally well organized. Jolene is highly skilled as an acupuncturist, nurturing, kind, funny, down to earth and deeply compassionate. Jolene is also a true professional. She is always 100% attentive, engaging and present. In short, she is an acupuncturist-angel. That said, my impression of BAP where I have now been seen for approximately a month 1-3 times per week, was tainted today by the very strange and demeaning manner of Jorge. In short, I felt absolutely bullied by him. I had taken a sheet by mistake instead of a blanket to cover myself, having never been told not to take the sheets, and having thought it was a blanket at first. I was covered under it when Jorge came out and stared at me blankly, then said "Wooooooohw" and walked away shaking his head in disgust. I immediately thought I must've done something wrong. I was dumbfounded by having been shamed and harassed by someone who I was coming to for healing. I chose to leave and not be treated. I will be giving a letter in more detail to the managers. I am unsure if I want to be treated here again after this experience which was deeply troubling. Because I like Jolene so much, this would be a sad and disappointing end to my care at BAP. However bad his morning may have been and however much he disliked the look of me, for reasons unknown to me, he had no business to treat me as he did. Does he not like women? Is it cultural? I am baffled. I would suggest that BAP put a sign by the middle station letting folks know not to take blankets or sheets from there if this is against the rules. read more

I have been going to BAP for almost 2.5 years and it has been nothing less than a life saver. Before coming here, I had never done acupuncture before and I was really nervous that it would be painful. It turned out to be amazing for my physical and mental well-being. I started out attending multiple times a week, now I go once a week or every two weeks for sustaining my health. I have seen many acupuncturists at BAP but once I found Julia, she is the only person I see now. It's not that other acupuncturists are bad, but in my experience, Julia's level of skill is unparalleled. She is so kind, empathetic, and nurturing, I can't recommend her highly enough. I have sent numerous friends to her and now they also see her regularly for a range of issues. If you go and feel mixed about your experience, try a different acupuncturist until you find a person who works well for you. I have successfully used BAP for depression, pain (including back pain), anxiety, mood swings, PMS/PMDD/menstrual regulation, migraine headaches, carpal tunnel, sleep, and tapering off of medication. They are sliding scale and extremely affordable because having it in a community setting helps keep the prices down. When I first started coming to BAP, I was on disability and paid $15/session. BAP is one of the services that helped me get healthy enough to get a job again, and now I can pay higher on the sliding scale. When I first came, I was also nervous about the "community" aspect of it - getting treatment in front of other people sounded really terrifying. Now I actually like it much more than the thought of being alone in a room. BAP is very cozy with soothing music playing and warm lighting. You sit in a comfy chair with blankets and pillows and most people are relaxing or sleeping during their treatments. The majority of people fall asleep during their treatments: I usually do not, but when I do fall asleep, I awake with the most peaceful, happy, rested feeling. You can stay in your chair for as long as you like, I usually stay for 30-40 minutes. I have also started using various herbs that Julia has recommended to supplement my treatment - they have them there and I can pick them up after my session. BAP is walkable from Downtown Berkeley BART. They have an easy system to set-up appointments online. Although some people experience immediate results, don't expect them on your first visit. Remember nap time in preschool? Where everyone had to lie down on a cot and pretend to sleep for a certain amount of time? I hated it. But like most things I loathed as a kid, I appreciate so much as an adult. Healthy snacks, cultural activities, strenuous hikes, and especially.... grown up nap time. BAP is where I get my fix. I'm a believer in the wonders of acupuncture, as it's helped me sleep better, relieve tension headaches, boost my immune system, and probably helped me get pregnant as super fast as I did (when I was ready... acupuncture will not cause pregnancy if that's not your intended effect :) I've continued to get weekly acupuncture treatments through pregnancy and baby seems to enjoy the energy flow, too. While this is a "community" acupuncture clinic with a communal space vs. private rooms, the set-up did not weird me out, as I sort of expected it to. Basically, you check in, grab a recliner chair and blankets, and your practitioner comes and asks you how you're feeling/what you're dealing with, puts the needles in accordingly, and you lay back and chill for as long as you want. It's a great place to zone out, recharge, and get your chi back in order. Things to know & love: - online appt scheduling, usually with same-day options available - sliding scale pricing $18-40, cash or credit accepted - calm environment with trickling fountains and soothing spa music, whispers only - multiple acupuncturists on staff, and you can book with specific practitioners if you find one you love. Or book with whoever fits your schedule. For acupuncture junkies, this is a great place to get your regular fix for a very reasonable price, with tons of scheduling options. I have an autoimmune disorder which led to major food allergies and eventually adrenal fatigue. I used to run on a regular basis and now I can't even ride my bicycle a couple of miles without falling apart. I have bounced from one Dr. to another who said they could fix these issues all to no avail. I have spent years trying to fix this and I have only improved slightly. Thank goodness I found BAP. Acupuncture is not a quick fix for such a systemic malfunction but they sure do relieve the symptoms. And they are the only relief I have found that is still working. I have been in such bad shape, I could barely drag my self in the front door but presto-chango, an hour later, I am practically dancing back out that door to work. And with something resembling clarity, too! Sometimes I can go for a couple days, sometimes a week but sooner or later my batteries will run down and I will be completely useless. If it wasn't for BAP, my family would be in trouble because they are counting me to to do things that I just cannot do without a BAPNAP. Western medicine has no remedies for me. I even went to neurologist who only made things worse with each visit. Bap would put me back together. I wish I could take back all the money l spent on the neurologist and give it to BAP. I love being able to schedule an appointment online (the most reliable method) or by just calling them up (sometimes the person at the desk is busy elsewhere and doesn't hear the phone). You can also walk-in but during flu season, they get really busy. It seems to me that there are different approaches to acupuncture. Even though they take extensive notes on you, each acupuncturist is free to pursue their own path within the discipline while treating your situation. I have found several I like and one I disagree with so I just don't schedule with that person. I'm sure there are others who prefer that acupuncturist and may not like my fav. They are very clean and quite conscientious about treating people with anything contagious. They have a sliding scale of $15 to $40. I cannot think of a better way to spend my limited funds. For the life of me I don't understand why this place has 5 stars. I would give negative stars if I could. My aunt and my grandma went to this place for acupuncture and both of them left with needles STILL IN THEM. Luckily my aunt saw two needles in her leg and asked them to take it out for her. But my grandma isn't as aware. The first time she left with two needles in her HEAD. The second time she left with three needles behind her ear. So it didn't just happen once, it happened three times to both my relatives. Needless to say, I strongly advised them both to not return. I understand its a slide price but it doesn't matter if they're not going to finish what they started! It's simply unprofessional and unacceptable to not check all the needles are taken out! read more

A friend told me about this new acupuncture clinic, so I went in for a free session. I think they just opened, so they were giving free sessions today to promote the clinic. The reception area is clean and spacious. I love their philosophy of offering affordable acupuncture treatment. The price is $15 - $40, and you decide what you can afford. The treatment room is a big open space with recliners placed in a circle. The lighting is warm and dim, and the room is filled with calming sound of trickling water. You hear the acupuncturist whispering to patients occasionally. You will get a blanket and pillow to make yourself comfortable. Once settled into your recliner, the acupuncturist will talk to you briefly about your problems and then start sticking needles. My acupuncturist, Michelle, came by to check on me once. After about 40 min, she took the needles out. I have had acupuncture before but never in this community room setting. I actually liked being with other people in a big open room instead of a small sterile room with one bed. What I did forget to bring was my ipod. :( The worst part of acupuncture for me is not the pain or discomfort but boredom. Having to sit still for 30 - 40 min with absolutely nothing to do is very challenging for me. I've been told that acupuncture was the cure for my carpel tunnel problem. I am not sure acupuncture is for me though. It's not as pleasant or relaxing as a massage. However, if I were to get acupuncture on a regular basis, I would come here over other places I've visited. Working with Shiva is changing my life. I'm releasing stuck emotions and thought patterns that I thought I'd never release. I always feel happier after our sessions. How is it I haven't reviewed BAP yet? I have been treated here almost since they started. The work is quality and their prices can't be beat. I started with Michelle and found her technique to be gentle and intuitive: sometimes I would feel a tingle where she was about to needle me and I could tell she was thinking about that spot. Later I worked more with Mary and Julia ~ both of whom have excellent command of TCM. Mary is compassionate and wonderful but Julia works well for me because she's just as uptight as I am and totally gets me: after placing the needles she often "tucks me in" using a highly evolved blanket technique. I have worked with other practitioners (Mari has an amazing gentle needling technique) but always hope I can see my old favorites. Tips: 1. Be conscious of the quiet atmosphere ~ in the community setting even noisy clothing can disrupt a napping neighbor, let alone a cell phone buzzing away. Try talking in a low voice instead of a loud raspy whisper when you consult with your treater. 2. Park in the neighborhood (west of MLK, south of University) nearby ~ you want a two hour spot just in case. If you absolutely have to use a metered spot, let them know about how long you can lay there. 3. Bring a cozy scarf for afterwards ~ your temperature may drop while you receive treatment. 4. Be on time (Especially for Julia). They'll make space for you if possible but when things are really booked up, they need to time everything carefully. 5. If you want a more in depth treatment for a challenging condition, ask if herbs or a pressball (non-needles that stay with you for a day) would be good for you. ENjoy!! read more

I'm very grateful to have this resource available to the community. The practitioners are all very kind and caring, although their skill levels range wildly. I really enjoyed Michelle's gentle approach to inserting the needle; Mary was also wonderfully gentle and pleasant to work with. Jorge was very kind and compassionate, but his technique felt rough and caused me pain I've never experienced in over 15 years of getting treatment. It's best to leave yourself a lot of time for your session because appointments do not start on time and the patient is typically left to remind the practitioner to remove the needles at or near a set time. It's not the same experience as going to an expensive clinic where treatments start at $80 and you have a private room, relaxing atmosphere (a massage table vs a lumpy, questionably hygienic armchair), ability to be naked or next to it and a practitioner who is very familiar with your condition AND treatment history. You don't get any of that in a community clinic. You get caring people who want to provide a resource that is cost prohibitive, but healing when done correctly. I agree that acupuncture should be available to anyone who needs it but, unfortunately, in this society you do get what you for. This is how I would rank BAP if I could break up the different aspects: 3.5 stars for treatment received (some of the treatments are 5 star quality, some are 2 star, like when I left in pain due to sloppy technique - who hits the top of needles?!) 2 stars for punctuality (I've never had an appointment start on time) 5 stars for providing an affording service, staffed by compassionate people. 3 stars for atmosphere and attention to hygiene read more

Often the biggest obstacle to using alternative medicine is the out-of-pocket expense. Many people had recommended acupuncture for me to help with my chronic inflammatory disease but many local practitioners charged $75-125 per visit and I was advised to go 2-3 times per week. A friend told me about BAP's sliding scale and "group" setting so I decided to give it a try. Sharing a room full of huge recliners with other like minded people who believe in the power of Eastern Medicine was actually inspiring instead of intrusive. The setting is relaxing and nurturing and each of the practitioners I have seen has been different b equally caring in their approach. Hours after my very first session, I felt more energy and less pain. The speed of my response surprised me but was welcome relief from a chronic disease. My review is strictly about my experience at BAP, not acupuncture in general or treatments of my personal ailments. This place is amazing for the Berkeley community. It's warm, friendly, serene, and very affordable (sliding scale from $15-$40, but expect to pay at least $30 for the first visit to the intake forms). You are treated in a large quiet communal room with lots of recliners where you sit during your treatment. There are clean pillows and blankets to borrow, and you can stay as short or as long as you need. I've been really frustrated with Western medicine practices, namely concerning my feminine health issues (yeast, BV), as well as digestive issues. I received my first treatment from Mari, whom I wholeheartedly recommend. It's too soon to tell how it's going for me personally, since I've only had one treatment. Try not to move! I moved too much, and it hurt for me. I also should have called Mari to remove needles sooner, but it was my first time. I had to nap afterwards, so don't schedule a session (especially if it's your first time) in the middle of a hectic day. Every time I come here I have a different experience. Sometimes I have visions of climbing up endless staircases, or swimming out into a sea out of a Star Trek episode, sometimes I just just feel the energy flowing through me while I "cook". Just being there is calming, sitting in a lounger in the middle of the day with busy University Avenue only feet away. The women who have treated me have been amazing healers and keep up with my various health issues. I can't say enough good things about it, I always leave feeling better than when I got there. It's a 35 minute drive there for me, but I'm always happy when I get there, despite navigating crazy Berkeley traffic. If you park down a few blocks finding a space isn't a big deal, I"ve never had to walk more than a few minutes. Get your bapnap on!!!! read more

Where do I start... I've gone past this place hundreds of times living in berkeley off and on the past 5 years, but decided to randomly try it today. I'm so glad I did! I've been to many different acupuncturists and this community style was surprisingly great! The rooms are warm with soft lighting. The receptionist gave me a very thorough orientation--so I knew exactly what to expect from start to finish. The bathroom was super clean and colorful. I met with Sierra Maria, who was clearly an expert, patience and a great listener. I haven't ever fallen asleep during a session, but I was so comfortable and warm and taken care of ---off I went! When my session was done, I walked home feeling like I was on cloud nine... My roommate saw me in the kitchen and said, "Where were you?! You are glowing!" This is truly a gem for the east bay and Berkeley community! read more

This place is amazing. I've been coming here at least a few times a month since October 2012 to work on some personal things and I couldn't have a greater experience. I've tried several other community acupuncture services because they were closer to where I live in Oakland, but I have decided to keep scheduling at BAP because it's the best. The staff is so caring, the atmosphere comfortable and relaxing. I always find parking just a couple blocks down in the residential area, or come early morning or after 6pm for free street parking right in front. BAP has been my saving grace!!! For the past couple of years I have had really bad keen pain. I run and crossfit and both activities really push me, but I love it. Every western doctor I have had advised me to stop being active. For me, that's not a solution. If I can still walk then I'm going to do something. So, I tried yoga and acupuncture, both have been great. However, both are really expensive. Because of the sliding scale, BAP allows me to stay on a regular treatment program to rehab my knee. So, I don't have to start when I have money and stop when I don't have $100. Thus far, I have had two treatments. My knee pain has reduced significantly and I'm still working on my stress. I have had Michelle and Mary and both are fantastic, friendly and pleasant. I like being able to make an appointment online as it helps me plan my week and I can stick to my treatment program. I was already familiar with community acupuncture from the ear acupuncture clinic in Potrero Hill, SF. After I moved to the East Bay, though, I didn't know if I would be able to take advantage of it any more. I was so thrilled to find out about BAP when they opened a couple years ago. It continues with the positive aspects of community acupuncture that I was used to, but with even more support for a positive treatment experience. I really appreciate how the various receptionists regularly remind people to turn off their cell phones, and make sure visitors are familiar and comfortable with the space. And the treatment room lighting, comfortable chairs, and soft music all make for a really restful experience. I am so grateful for the sliding scale, as it allows me to schedule enough visits to take care of my health in a preventative capacity, not just when I'm already feeling off balance. Some years had passed since I had received acupuncture treatment and this open seating or 'community' arrangement worked quite naturally. In contrast to a cramped, blazing white doctor's office of before, the accommodating, quiet and lesser light provided the chance simply to experience the process of letting the needles do their work. The beauty of the relaxed atmosphere at BAP lies in how the time is provided for enough stimulation to occur. Bravo! My therapist immediately found the set of spots which led to my unfolding and gradual relaxation. I walked out of there with something like 'chi' or essence welling and flowing through my legs and upper torso. As I write this two hours later, the tension keeps releasing.
