I came to Berkeley Acupuncture Project with a chronic knee injury that was worsened by a fall. I was using a cane when I came in. Within 4 treatments, I was able to walk without the cane. I have continued twice a week for maintenance on this knee, probably for the rest of my life because of the nature of the injury. The affordability of the service makes this possible. They also work on my blood sugar and liver, as those are areas of concern for me. The environment is soothing, and sharing the space with other clients adds to the healing for me. All the acupuncturists here are excellent! To make it affordable you'll see they work hard, but when they're with you they'll take the time to connect with warmth. I could rave about how special each of them are individually, but why not try them yourself? If you asked me to name just one, I suggest Mary; she's a true master of this art. Thank goodness for this place; otherwise I couldn't afford the treatments which I need very much. Oh, I noticed another reviewer upset about a needle left in. It's rare, but it happens sometimes with all acupuncturists. Less here than elsewhere in my experience. I always mention it just so they'll know to be more careful, but nothing is perfect, it's rare but it's part of getting acupuncture. read more

I'm so thoroughly delighted with Berkeley Acupuncture Project. I've been wanting to try acupuncture for years, but prices of an individual session have been prohibitive. A friend mentioned BAP to me, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the fact that my session wasn't completely private, but it seemed worthwhile to at least try. To my great surprise, the community setting of the treatments is now one of the qualities I appreciate most. Getting settled into a comfortable chair, in a clean, quiet, dimly lit room, and seeing other people blissed out around me just helps get me into the zone that much faster. So far, I've seen Michelle, Asha, Priscilla and Ellie, and they've been uniformly knowledgable and kind. I just started going to BAP a few weeks ago to address some chronic neck and shoulder pain, and so far I haven't experienced breakthroughs, but I don't expect to until further down the line. What has been consistent is the state of bliss I float into during each session, and the renewed sense of calm and patience that I feel afterwards. The studio is two blocks from my office, so it's a perfect place to walk to after work and shake off the stresses of the day. Love this place. Been there a few times lately, and planning on going back this weekend. You can tell them any issue you have and they will figure out the right spots to target to help heal it. Last time I went I asked the woman how long she had been working there and she said a couple years, and she had just recently surpassed the 10,000 mark for how many acupuncture sessions she has done. So she seemed experienced which is always nice. It's such a relaxing environment and I love that it's one big room where you're all together in a community environment. Yes, I like to pay people to poke me with needles. I must be a glutton for punishment. So glad I found this place and can finally afford regular acupuncture. I've been a handful of times so far, but Michelle remembered me after my first visit and happily answers all my questions. The community setting does take a little getting used to, and I hope I can count on them to regularly wash all the shared blankets and whatnot, especially during flu season. Got a good nap in! Pretty sure these guys are selling snake oil. Went in with back issue, no needle were inserted into my back, but I was told it would still alleviate pain in my back. It did not. I have had acupuncture before but it was localized in the area that was in pain. The chairs are dingy and old and not all of them work properly. For example, I got a reclined chair that I had to climb into because it did not unrecline. Although I will say once I did climb into the chair with back spasms, it did end up being very comfortable. I won't go back to this establishment as I am convinced it is a total scam. Sorry guys, just an honest opinion. read more

BAP is awesome! I've been going weekly for about five months and I'm sure it's helping with my health status. I rotate between Julia and Michelle, and I really love them both. I've seen Ellie, and I really like her too. Julia and Michelle are so supportive as are the staff, and since I go so often, they know me. BAP is awesome. I hate needles, but I'm gradually becoming less weirded out about it. It helps that you're in a cozy room, you can swathe yourself in as many blankets and pillows as you like (I think I'm re-creating the womb...or a cocoon of coziness...or something), recline in a comfy armchair, and just fall into a great acu-nap. You can lie there as long as you like. If you have your eyes closed, they won't bother you. If you want someone to check on you or when you're ready to take your needles out, you just have to make eye contact and they'll come over. I love being able to just fall asleep for an hour, with no judgment or interruptions, and waking up refreshed and energized. The atmosphere is great. It's relaxing and informal, like a spa-meets-living room. Except a really clean, sanitary living room (unlike mine). I like the community setting, with the chairs all around the room. It's more comforting than being alone in a treatment room. The fountains, soothing music, and soft lighting are nice touches. Michelle and BAP are getting me through my summer studying for the Bar! And without having to go broke doing it. Yaay! read more

I have tried a few different acupuncture places in the past, but since a friend recommended this place to me, there's no going back. Affordable! With their sliding scale of $15 to $40 it is actually possible to get more than the occasional treatment. Relaxing! The atmosphere is so calming indeed that I regularly fall asleep, only to wake up refreshed and happy. I have scheduled myself with about half of their practitioners and I like them all. I have seen each and every acupunc practitioner here and they are all INCREDIBLE!! They each have their own particular strengths but I have benefited greatly from all the treatments from everyone. I came in today as a walk in and I must say I was deeply disappointed. I came from San Ramon only to get turned away .I waited in the receptionist area patiently. I had to stick my head in the back before someone had noticed me. The receptionist told me that they weren't taking any walk-ins and that she only had 1 acupuncturist. Here's my deal you advertise walk- ins but you deny me service. Let's keep in mind it wasn't even 5:00. Did I mention that I came from San Ramon. The lady at the desk wasn't a great help today. We come to work to work and be greeted when we arrive. I'm keeping an open mind maybe her day wasn't going well. I wish I can give the business more stars but at this point. I can honestly say Berkeley Acupuncture Project have dramatically improved my quality of life! For the past 20 years I have had incredibly painful menstrual cramps, so strong that over the counter pain-killers did nothing and I literally couldn't do anything other than curl up in a ball with that amount of pain. The only thing that worked was codeine, but the side effect of basically being stoned meant that I was unable to work properly one day every month. I was pretty desperate to find anything that might help reduce the pain, so I decided to try acupuncture. I admit I was a bit of a skeptic at first, I thought it would probably be a waste of time and money but as BAP is so affordable I gave it a shot. I've been being treated for 5 or 6 months now by Mary and Julia, both of whom are fantastic. They told me to give the treatment three cycles before giving up. The first two came and went with no noticeable improvement. I wondered if I was just a non-responder, especially as it seems like everyone else finds it so relaxing that they fall asleep for two hours, whereas I just sit awake for 20 minutes. After the initial disappointing results they started me taking some chinese herbs. I was even more skeptical about the herbs than the pills but thankfully I was desperate enough to give it a try. The third cycle came...and it was a noticeable improvement -the pain had dialed down from unbearable to strong but bearable. I was delighted, but even more so the following month when there was NO PAIN AT ALL!!! I couldn't believe it, it was just too good to be true so I convinced myself it was just some crazy fluke and the pain would return the next month. But then the next one came, and still no pain! It has just completely gone. I am absolutely amazed - I never dreamed it could be this effective. I am so incredibly happy, I wanted to write this review to encourage anyone out there who is living with pain to give this a try. I have been going to Berkeley Acupuncture Project for a couple of months now trying to get ahead of my allergies and asthma before spring hits and seeking relief for some tendonitis in my arm, with good results on both fronts. I have worked with several of the women there and found them all to be gentle, calming, friendly, and caring. The atmosphere is communal, and I was worried about that at first, but it is very peaceful and I have had no trouble relaxing and feeling comfortable. I visited Berkeley Acupuncture Project for the first time today and let me say that I did feel amazing after. Mary was very welcoming and made me feel comfortable. Even though I had an overall great experience, the reason why I give only one star is because I was left with one needle stuck on the top of my head after I was told they were all taken out. This is very dangerous and they are lucky that I decided to walk my bike instead of putting on my helmet and riding. Mary did insert the needles but I wasn't able to get the name of the other lady who took out the needles. I think that Berkeley Acupuncture Project is doing amazing with their clientele and that the incident that happened to me only happened because of the process that I went through with them. I do not believe that there should be a different person putting in and taking out the needles. It does make me sad to give this company a horrible rating, but I do so because I want them to be more careful. read more

My roommate raves about this place and now I see why. She was kind enough to give my boyfriend and I gift cards to try it. Very clean and professional. I was able to make both my boyfriends and my appointment online. They called with reminders and let me know exactly what to expect. Once we got there we were given paper work to fill out with our concerns. I needed help with my anxiety and my boyfriend for high blood pressure and stress. After filling out a short amount of paper work we were given a tour of the facility and a break down on prices. We finally got settled into the big cozy chairs they have set up in a community "living room," as they call it, and Mary who was my acupuncture specialist, came over and talked with me about what I would like to get out of going and how everything was going to work. The she got to putting the needles in. You can barely feel them. I was covered with a soft fleece blanket and quickly fell asleep. About an hour later I woke and the needles were taken out. I felt calm and at peace. I will be going again to help with my anxiety. Great place to go an the sliding pay scale is great for someone, who like me, is broke. read more

I received acupuncture recently for tendonitis pain that I had been experiencing for several months. I must admit, in the beginning, I wasn't sure what to expect because I haven't had acupuncture before. I am a Massage Therapist, and I am also a member of a bowling league so the constant pain greatly interfered with my daily activities that I enjoy. I couldn't have been more pleased with the results. I received my treatment from Vig. He is very professional and knowledgeable. It's been several weeks since my treatment, and the pain hasn't returned. I wouldn't be able to afford weekly acupuncture treatments if it weren't for BAP, and I am so glad I tried it. I come here for help with my anxiety, and it is THE most helpful thing I've ever tried. I also find a lot of relief from using the tinctures that they give me. I always try to see Sierra Maria, who is amazing. All of the other practitioners are great too-but something about Sierra Maria is magic. She is clearly very skilled, and is such a good listener and kind person. This is the first time in months that I do not have back pain, yes- I have had acupuncture before but never this communal type. I do prefer the regular on the table type- however I can not afford to go to the places I have gone int he past as it was just cost prohibitive to spend 125 plus every time . And like exercise- it is ideal to do this with regularity. . I have now waited 24 hours after my treatment at BAP and still- none of the usual discomfort I feel. I am sensitive to acupuncture and have had a fair amount over the years. I never had this type- it is where you keep your clothes on and lie in a room with whoever is in that day. They explain things very well so you know what to expect and are extremely professional and knowledgeable in their treatment. They have a sliding scale and that allows me to go several times in a week and still eat and pay rent! :) read more
