I'll probably never get to see this doctor since the b$%%# who answers the phone thinks she is a doctor and wouldn't listen to me.

To this day, I still recommend him to anyone I meet that is in need of a spine surgeon. He is super funny, kind, smart, has excellent bedside manner and is incredibly talented in his field. He cares about his patients. Truly, I can't imagine how anyone could think otherwise. I was too young for spine surgery then (20s) but he still took my concerns seriously. He went above and beyond to find the cause of my pain, while also referring me out for treatments and second opinions. Those years were such a difficult time in my life and if it weren't for him, I'm not sure how I would've gotten through it. Thanks doc!

Dr Talwar asked about my injury and while describing what happened, I apparently didn't use sophisticated enough verbage for Dr Talwar who then interjected condescendingly. He started dictating his notes into a mircophone as I'm talking. Rude. As the visit went on he seemed to lighten up some but the first impression was already made. I would expect better from a fellow Gen-X as he pointed out we shared almost the exact same bday, 364 days apart. I don't care how skilled you are at your craft, if you can't treat people like humans- then that expertise loses a lot of its value. The office staff was nice enough.

For most people the thought of spinal surgery in any capacity is a frightening decision. The nerve…read morepain that went on 24/7 in my neck and right arm left me bed ridden for 5 months. During that time I searched for the root cause of my debilitating condition. When it was finally determined that I need 2, possibly 3 discs replaced in my neck along with the appropriate plates and screws put in place from C4-C7, I definitely had to take a deep breath. So many questions ran through my mind such as who is the best surgeon for my specific condition? What kind of outcome can I expect? If I do find a highly recommended surgeon, will they be affiliated with a facility I can trust? After asking friends, other physicians and a very well respected physical therapist, one name kept coming up which was Dr. Ronnie Mimran. Dr. Mimran is a neurosurgeon with Pacific Brain & Spine. He has impeccable credentials and a wonderful bedside manner. He genuinely cares about the health and welfare of his patients. He answered all of my questions and treated me with respect. The follow-up care was clearly outlined and I knew what to expect after surgery. The hospital where I had my procedure was Eden Medical, in Castro Valley. They have a neurosurgery unit that took very good care of me, which was very important because I have had some not so great experiences at other facilities. So in short, if you are faced with any type of spinal surgery, make sure you ask lots of questions, know what the procedure will entail, including post operative care and future do's and don'ts. Get referrals from more than one source, and do some simple internet searches for credentials and feedback from previous patients. Even though there are no guarantees in life, being well informed is an important part of caring for your health and your future.

I sure wish he was back working again so he could fix the loose screws left from the past surgeon that are now causing pain. I highly recommend Dr Mimran.

I had a complication after my initial surgery and it took an absurd amount of calls to get ahold of anyone. (I ended up needing and having an emergency surgery to repair a CSF leak.) Since after reaching out multiple times via phone and email with no success my fiancé had to go in to the front desk (staff was blasting music, didnt notice her because they were staring at their phones, and had a dog on their lap, looked like a poodle.) At some point my insurance bill was sent to a company I've never even heard of, they have my actual insurance on file. This doesn't make any sense because they have submitted prior claims to the correct company in the past. The front desk all together was an absolute mess, Dr. Ball is a skilled surgeon, Dr. Shrada was awesome, but these people at the front need to be held accountable... ABSOLUTE NEGLIGENCE! I can't even fathom running a business like this...

Dr Stine was sure that this was the source of my husband's hip pain. Dr Stine said he "would recommend consideration for a diagnostic and therapeutic hip injection under live fluoroscopy." My husband agreed to the injection. Afterwards, he did not notice any change in his symptoms. On December 5, 2012, Dr Stine said that "given the failure of significant conservative management including rest, ice, anti-inflammatories, activity modification, physical therapy and injection therapy, the next step is to undergo hip arthroscopy," to which my husband agreed. My husband never recovered from the arthroscopy. He was in extreme pain for four months and found that it was often impossible to contact Dr Stine. I felt like Dr Stine had abandoned my husband, and so I yelped about it. The very next day Dr Stine called and persuaded my husband to ask me to delete my yelp. He made an appointment to see my husband immediately. He admitted that his arthroscopy had failed and scheduled my husband for a total hip replacement. It has been three years since Dr Stine replaced my husband's hip joint, and my husband is still in at least as much pain as before he consulted Dr Stine. Recently in reviewing his medical records, my husband realized that Dr Stine never explained to him that the lack of relief from any symptoms after his hip injection, which Dr Stine noted in the above quote from my husband's medical record, meant that my husband's pain did not come from his hip. Dr Stine should have explained to my husband at that point that surgery would not relieve the pain from which he continues to suffer. Clearly, my husband's "cadillac insurance" made Dr Stine see dollar signs and a chance to get more experience with the latest trend in hip surgery. While Dr Stine may be an excellent surgeon, he needs oversight in interpreting therapeutic and diagnostic indications. His enthusiasm and self-confidence can be persuasive, but get a second opinion before you let him operate. Recent reports have established that the arthroscopic procedure he used on my husband, in which cartilage is scraped and punched with little holes on the assumption that it will stimulate cartilage regrowth, lacks any evidence of benefit: in virtually all cases, this surgery has made a total hip replacement necessary. Hopefully, Dr Stine has learned this and is no longer practicing this procedure.

I do not know who handles their scheduling for appointments, but he needs to be replaced immediately. I called on a Monday, and apparently, their system was down. He told me he'd call back in 30 minutes to an hour. By Thursday, I still hadn't received a call back, so I called again. Same man picked up the phone and (again) he was very difficult to hear and understand. When I asked him to repeat his question, he immediately became very condescending and began speaking to me in a very slow and rude tone. After I provided all of my insurance information, he refused to make me an appointment because of "a past due balance." We have never been to this office, we have no past-due balance with any provider, and our insurance is paid in full. He adamantly refused to make an the appointment until he "spoke with" his supervisor. He said he'd call me back in 15 minutes... Here we are HOURS later and no call. I called my insurance, and they saw no issue and were very confused about why we could not make an appointment. I went ahead and EASILY made an appointment with UCSF.
