Oxtail (Small)
Sarah N.

I enjoyed the food here. The oxtail had a good flavor and fell off the bone because of how tender it was. I also enjoyed the mac and cheese and plantains, though I wish the plantains were a little less mushy. I also thought the food was a bit pricey, but I guess everything in Parkville Market is. Overall, this wasn't the best food I've had, but it was still enjoyable.

When visiting the Parkville Market for the first time, I decided to eat at this place after I saw the oxtail on the menu. Growing up in a Puerto Rican household, having oxtail stew for dinner was a special treat. I'd say it had been about 5-6 years since I've had it. I ordered the small portion (it wasn't that small!) and chose pumpkin rice (something I had never heard of) and the fried plantains. When I asked what pumpkin rice was, she was nice enough to serve my friend and me a small portion to try. My friend ordered the same meal, but with white rice. The portions were big, and it was really good! I thought I would end up retaking some of this home, but I ate the entire thing! The rice had a subtle flavor, the plantains were perfect, and the oxtail was very tender and full of flavor. She added a ton of sauce, and it was delicious. I can't wait to head over to Parkville again. I know I'll be tempted to get this again and not try a new place or a new dish, but maybe I'll just get this to-go!

If you need some authentic Jamaican food this is the place to check out. It is one of my favorite restaurants at Parkville market as they have the best Jerk chicken. There is never a line and the area is well maintained I did not give 5 stars because one week I tried the oxtail and it was overcooked. I, however, had the pineapple bowl and it was very flavorful. Today I had the jerk chicken meal with 2 sides of plantain. These are 2 of my favorite Jamaican food and it was so good. I am never disappointed when I order these 2 items. The chicken was well marinated and the plantain was sweet and not too soft or oily. I bought the small meal, but there was so much chicken on my plate you would think it's medium or large. There is a wide variety of Jamaican dishes on the menu and you can never go wrong if you are looking to try something authentic that taste homemade.

"Psychedelic shack, that's where it's at People, let me tell you 'bout a place I know To get in it don't take much dough Where you can really do your thing" (The Temptations) If you like Jamaican food, let me tell ya 'bout a place I know. It's the Shack and it won't take a lot of dough for you to do your thing and order up a big plate of awesomeness. They sell Jerk chicken, jerk pork, jerk fish, fried chicken, oxtail, stew chicken, curry chicken, curry goat combination plates in two sizes with your choice of two sides, plus meat pies and specials like Rasta Pasta and a Pineapple Bowl. I ordered a small Jerk Chicken with the traditional rice and peas and steamed vegetables, after tax it totaled $11.27. "Small" is relative term because it was a pretty generous portion of perfectly cooked rice and beans and tender vegetables. The star of the show, of course was the chicken. It was moist and pretty much perfect. The sauce was pretty zippy on its own, but the cautionary comments from Yelp CM Alex P.T. about their incendiary hot sauce kind of intrigued me. When I asked for some, they gave me one of those itty-bitty containers filled before my eyes from a newly opened bottle of Spur Tree Jamaican Crushed Scotch Bonnet Hot Sauce. That itty-bitty container would have been like a year's supply for me. An eyedropper's worth is all I would have needed to deliver some serious heat. So be cautious of it and apply at your own risk. While we're on the topic of dining at your own risk, if you are a fan of Jamaican food, you already damn sure know the chicken is going to be bony. They pretty much take a chicken quarter and hack away at it with a cleaver like a crazed killer in a slasher movie. No pulled chicken here -this isn't a BBQ joint. Bottom line? Everything in my take-out container was terrific -the chicken, the rice, the sauce, the vegetables, the price and the portion size. And that Scotch Bonnet took it into orbit around the sun.

First time at Parkville Market and I chose to eat from the Jerk Shack. Parkville market is a food hall filled with a variety of food from different countries. Service is that you go up to a window and order food. Seating style is long tables- ambiance is casual. Wasn't a huge drinking scene when we went on a Saturday night, people casually drinking. I opted for Jerk Shack (interesting name), and ordered the jerk chicken, mac and cheese, and rice with peas. I got the small, which was more than enough for me and I had leftovers to bring home. The food was a little spicy, but not too bad (my tolerance for spice is very low). Highly recommend this place!!!

Jerk chicken, Mac and cheese, rice

My boyfriend thinks this is the best thing ever, and I have to say I agree! The chicken is perfectly charred, smoky, and seasoned, and is very tender. For someone who doesn't like meat a whole lot, I would totally eat a whole pound of their chicken. Their sides are also very good, the Mac and cheese is buttery but light and you can tell they used a good cheese in it. The rice is also seasoned very well and a perfect accompaniment to the chicken. They have massive portions, great service and efficient order-receiving times. They also have a hot sauce you can put on but I honestly love the flavors as is. This shack is located inside of Parkville Market. Seating on the first floor can be hard to find at times but there is always plenty of seating on the second floor. Totally worth checking out!

I enjoyed my first Jerk Shack beef patty today. Ninety percent of the beef patties I've had in my life are from the same place in East Hartford. I appreciated the subtle differences between Jerk Shack's patty and the East Hartford one. They're seasoned a little differently. Jerk Shack's patty is flatter and breaks in a slightly different way. I would order it again.

This spot in Parkville Market is always kicking. Try a Pineapple Bowl filled with Jerk Chicken or Shrimp. It's so amazing and fun to eat on a hot Summer Night! Have it with the most tropical drink you can think of from Local and you're back in Montego Bay! Yummy to the Max!

I ordered takeout from the jerk shack last night for my husband and myself. We ordered the her chicken with rice and peas and plantain. We also ordered the Rasta pasta with chicken. On the side we also got the beef patty and the jerk beef patty. Both beef Pattie's were tasty. I still prefer the regular beef patty though. The Rasta pasta was full of chicken. The meal was a little dry and but it still tasted good. The plantains were nice and sweet. The jerk chicken was just how I like it moist, tender, and charred. The price of the pasta was a bit high for the portion size. Overall the portion sizes were smaller than I'm used to I'm making the decision to chalk it up to the current inflation market as I hope this is not standard.

Pineapple Jerk Bowl with chicken and shrimp

Jerk Shack is a Jamaican restaurant with an awesome location at Parkville Market. Its two owners have combined their specific styles of Jamaican dishes to create authentic and unique meals to satisfy the masses. I've seen their pictures posted on social media and last night was my first time ordering from their menu. It will definitely not be the last! I ordered the Pineapple Jerk Bowl and it came wrapped in aluminum foil. When I sat down at our table I was so excited to finally try it. It felt like I was a kid unwrapping a present on Christmas morning. Hot damn! It was one of the most impressive presentations of food I have seen in a long time. The portion was huge. You get to choose two toppings- chicken, fish, shrimp, pork, curry goat or oxtail. I went with chicken and shrimp and it was out of this world. The meats come on a bed of jerk rice and everything is sautéed in a custom made pineapple jerk sauce. It tasted amazing! Pro tip- they have some pretty intense hot sauce if you dare. I love hot sauce and theirs is inferno level. Just a drop will do you perfectly if you are a hot sauce aficionado. I also ordered the fried plantains as a side and it was a perfect dessert to end my meal. The banana cake is on my list for next time! Parkville Market is the first official food hall in Connecticut. It's housed in the former Capitol City Lumber Company building. Indoor and outdoor seating, nineteen unique restaurants, drinks and live music. Gather up some friends, head down to Parkville Market and check out Jerk Shack. You won't be disappointed.

This place is inside Parkville Market food hall. They just opened this week, but still when I went on Friday evening this is one of the busiest place in the entire Parkville Market. I went with a goat curry small and jerk chicken small. I would say small was the right portion for me, not too full not too empty. Both were very flavorful. Goat curry was undeniably my favorite. Goat was cooked tender, and the curry had nice flavors. For sides fried plantains and mac n cheese was really good. Pumpkin rice was ok, may I should have gone for rice and peas. For dessert, banana cake was good. I was expecting more banana flavor from it, but it was mostly cinnamon flavor. Still it was good.

Unexpected Lunch Stop - Worth It!…read more I wasn't planning on eating here yesterday, but with the holiday, a few of my favorite spots were closed. Since I was in the neighborhood and short on time, I decided to stop in for a quick lunch--and I'm glad I did! The service was fast and efficient. The food is served hot, and you simply pick what you want, making the whole process super convenient. They give you a generous portion for a great price, and if you're dining in, the staff even brings your food right to the table, which was a nice touch. Whether you're looking for a quick takeout option or a sit-down meal, this spot is a solid choice for delicious Dominican food. Fast, filling, and flavorful--definitely worth a stop! I appreciate the candied yams not being overly sweet. They paired well with the mac&cheese and collard greens. My least favorite thing on the plate had to be the chicken, unfortunately. The flavor was lacking but the crunch was good. What wasn't great about my visit was the fact that it took 3 hours from start to finish. I sat down at my table at 7:20 and didn't leave until 10:40 due to slow service. With the special you get a salad, a soul food plate, and dessert. The salad was great but was clearly from a bag... so I was confused on why it took 30 minutes to come out. From there, our server came over 30 minutes later to tell us the food would take a while because everyone in the place ordered at the same time. Our plates unfortunately didn't come out until 9:15. From there it was an exhausting task of trying to track down our server to get our dessert to go. No other servers wanted to help us which was actually so nerve-wracking. Since Frenchie's is new and easily accessible, I would possibly return but not until something is done about their service. Usually I'm pretty laid back but I was also sat next to a blaring speaker where I couldn't even hear who was across from me. Overall, the visit was disappointing.

I was most excited to try this place out because it's been vacant for so long and I've seen the sign for a while and awaiting their opening. After hearing about a friend's experience, I convinced a couple others to make it over the next day they'd be open which was today, Monday. I looked it up and made reservations on Open Table. Today's the "Monday" and after getting off work.. waited an hour with friends who worked nearby, walked over to the establishment... I didn't even make it past the foyer despite having a reservation for 6p. We opened the door to the foyer and waited because that's where the host stand was. Assuming the inner door was locked which it actually was because a staff eventually unlocked the inner door. She didn't quite greet us, instead, she said that they won't be taking any orders until 7:30p because the kitchen hasn't opened yet. She also stood between the door and it felt like we were not even allowed in. She shut the door and conversed with her boss, offering us either to wait or get some kind of discount another time. I'm thankful for them trying to rectify the issue since I've already waited for them to open. I preferred to dine so we left. Also, I'm at a loss if I'll get penalized for the reservation I made on Open Table. She assured me I wouldn't be. She didn't take my name though I don't know about that. The entire thing was so disappointing. Their hours stated a 6p opening. There isn't a website for more information either. There is an instagram page and I wouldn't have known it was the same place if not for the address on the bio. The hours are mostly evenings only between Fridays-Mondays. It isn't posted on the door and again, information isn't clear. I'm not all too keen on coming back..

The music (piped in with commercials) is a big louder than you would expect, but this is really a lounge type of atmosphere. The decor is truly amazing. The colors are a big highlight. Get a load of the shot names. Did you see the lounge chair? The bottle display is amazing. I'm sitting down at the bar. These chairs are soft and comfy. The place is designed for you to stay a while. For my first drink, I'm having a Bedroom Bully. It is made with tequila, rum, Simply Lemonade, Blueberry-infused Syrup, lime juice and Triple Sec. Nice presentation! Nice glassware. I like the blueberries mixed in there. The lime wheel is just perfect. The taste is amazing! The straw is biodegradable. For my first food item, I'm having a beef pattie and coco bread. A Jamaican patty is a savory hand pie that originated in Jamaica. It's a semicircular pastry that contains various fillings and spices baked inside a flaky shell. The fillings can include seasoned ground beef, pork, lamb, lobster, shrimp, cheese, chicken, and ackee. The spices come from a melding of flavors in Jamaica. The East Indian indentured servants of the colonials added cumin and curries and enslaved Africans gave depth with the addition of cayenne pepper. This is delicious! It is warm, soft and spicy like it should be. Coco bread is a Jamaican bread made from flour, yeast, sugar, salt, butter, and coconut milk. The coconut milk gives the bread a tropical flavor and a uniquely Caribbean sensibility. Coco bread is buttery, slightly sweet, and firm on the outside and soft on the inside. It's often split in half and stuffed with a Jamaican patty or other filling to make a sandwich. This is a bread that is very easy to eat. I'm impressed! For my next drink, I'm having a Henny Island. This is made with tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice, pineapple, passion fruit and a Hennessy floater. Wow! This one is much stronger than the last drink! I'm guessing it's the Hennessy on top. This has a fantastic taste! For my entree, I'm having the Snappa n'Tings. This is streamed snapper cooked down in a coconut sauce with shrimp, okra, corn and pumpkin. Pumpkin? It is served with water crackers. A water cracker (Commonwealth English) or water biscuit (American English) is a type of savoury cracker. They are thin, hard and brittle, and usually served with cheese or wine. Water biscuits are also popular in Chile. Wow! Look at this dish! It is steaming hot! Lots of lemon slices! This is a rare occasion to enjoy some shrimp. There a lot of bones so beware. For my final drink, I'm having a Toxic. This is made with Diplomatico Reserva Patron, Aperol, lime juice and Fiorente Elderflower Liqueur. Definitely a strange combination. I am christening the bottle of patron! This is served in a globular, plastic glass. That is incredibly original! It's strong and has a very unique taste! I have never experienced a taste quite like this! When you drink it, it bubbles in the middle! You need to be patient here.
