Oxtail meal. (Sorry I dished some out already)
    Shayla C.

First timer and I need to keep it Real! I am Jamaican and grew up on true authentic good Jamaican food. Rating below: Jerk Pork 5/5 - some of the best I've ever had! It was season perfectly, and had a great spice to it! Oxtails 1/5 - some of the worst I've ever had. I'm sorry, but there is just no excuse for it. It lacked seasoning, was very fatty so you can tell it was not cleaned properly and had a sticky texture like cow-foot would be. Cold Cabbage side 5/5 - this was very good and had a nice sweetness to it. It complimented the jerk pork very well! Chicken Patty 1/5 - I ate 3 bites and discarded the rest. It didn't even look like chicken inside and probably had about a tablespoon of whatever meat that was in it. Was not served hot and honesty just wasn't good. Service 3/5 - the young lady who served me was pleasant but the young man behind the counter was not. When I asked him what type of soup they had, he rolled his eyes first and then answered me. Will I return, yes! The jerk pork is worth the trip!

I was excited to go here after seeing the bad reviews about the service (joke about Jamaican restaurants). Seriously... the food was excellent and the service was good! We had brown stew fish and curry goat. We didn't even have to ask for extra gravy. We are Jamaican so know our food... It was truly delicious and we will be back!

Great food! Diverse selection! Most Jamaican restaurants offer the normal foods like jerk chicken/pork, oxtails, and even curry goat. Paradise offers Cow foot and Tripe, Stewed Peas, Stewed Snapper and even Goat Head Soup. I was also very impressed with the the taste of their food. My son had the Jerk Chicken, my wife had the Goat Head Soup and I had the Oxtails. All of which were excellent.

Small jerk pork with rice and beans. Hacked into bits with a cleaver from a big slab in front of my eyes!

(UPDATE) The food has always been great here. My problem was that I never knew what they sold or what those dishes in the showcase were because there was no signage anywhere. But Praise Jah, that is no longer a problem. Now I can gladly increase this place's star power. Stopped in for lunch today and what did I see? A nice new electronic menu screen that scrolled through Paradise's choices with size and pricing options. I counted five breakfast choices, 6 seafood choices, 8 chicken choices, 3 pork dishes, plus specialties, bulk pricing, and side dishes. I've been here over half a dozen times, and I've noticed how chill and friendly the counter lady and the cook are. I love the way the cook reaches into the showcase for a big hunk of pork, and hacks it to pieces on a cutting board right in front of your eyes. The food is supreme here, the service is friendly, and now you actually know what to ask for!! "Don't worry about a thing, 'Cause every little thing gonna be all right" -

Large jerk chicken with rice and peas, no vegetable.

Came in on a whim and they did not disappoint. I got the large jerk chicken with rice and peas. The meal came with a vegetable( raw cabbage today) which I opt out of. They gave me more chicken and rice. Or I think they did. Chicken was not too spicy but flavorful. I also got a small ox Raul to try. I had asked for a small just oxtail but they do not just sell the meat alone, only in meals. Oxtail came with rice and peas and extra gravy if you want. Portions are generous. Price for both was $18.00.

Freshly made Pepper Steak was absolutely sublime over a bed of rice & peas! Mild and savory, it isn't spicy despite the name.

I come here on a regular basis because when I want home cooking but don't actually wanna, y'know cook at home, there's no better place. Conveniently located right on Blue Hills Avenue, it's not far from Hartford or Windsor. It's within walking distance of other stores and has good parking, although many patrons love to drive the wrong way down the one way entrance. It's run and set up like many other Jamaican restaurants with the small-medium-large menu choices. You can eat in or takeaway. I don't jerk my own pork because to do it properly requires more time than I have on most days. But their jerk pork is one the best in country, and to not try such a delicacy is a sin in several religions, including scientology. Ask Tom Cruise. The other great classics featured on their menu are the Pepper Steak which isn't actually peppery at all, and the Curry Chicken. I'm not fond of their jerk chicken, simply because it doesn't love up to the Jerk Pork. All in all, Paradise is appropriately eponymous for a reason. There's something here for everyone, even the vegans (even if it is just salad!)!

Jamaican Pepper Steak and gravy. Pot roast like flavor and tenderness. Great slaw, rice and beans. Awesome!

"Fish heads, fish heads Roly-poly fish heads…read moreFish heads, fish heads Eat them up, yum" (Barnes and Barnes) I've seen a few reviewers praise Island Fish Heads as the home of the best Jamaican food in Hartford, so I walked in for lunch with high expectations, and those expectations were decisively met. I had their curry chicken with cabbage and rice and peas, and everything was very good. The chicken was cooked perfectly; it was super moist and very flavorful. As fans of Jamaican food are no doubt aware, be careful of the bones in your container. The cabbage was tender and had a bonus of diced carrots and corn mixed in. The rice and peas were some of the best I've ever had. The rice was soft and fluffy and mixed with plenty of a very zippy curry. Service was perfect, with a smiling and very friendly gent taking my order. Parking is available on Albany Avenue and in a small lot on the corner of Green Street.

I finally took a ride over to satisfy my craving and I must say, it was definitely worth the drive. I tried the oxtail, Barbie fried chicken, fried dumpling and beef patties. Everything tasted super fresh and flavorful! I've tried many Jamaican restaurants and it's definitely a strong contender for sure!

"Won't you take a walk with me? I know a place where we can…read morego to grab a bite to eat" (Neil Young) I really enjoy Jamaican food and found a very nice place to grab a bite to eat at Quick Bites. You'll find it on Park Road between Quaker Road and Whiting Lane in West Hartford. There is parking on either side of Park, or in the small lot right alongside the restaurant. The interior of the dining space has a big yellow menu board on the wall, three tables for in-house dining, and the service counter where you order. The menu is pretty deep, with traditional small/large choices like jerk/stews/curries, jerk pastas, special orders (curry shrimp, anyone?), sandwiches, salads, sides, and more. When it's time to narrow down your choices and order, if you are as lucky as I was, hopefully your order will be taken and cooked by a delightful young lady by the name of Clover, or as she said, "like the plant". She was a delight and when she saw me looking at some coconut water (imported from Brazil) in the refrigerator, she filled me in on details about why it had to be frozen before it was refrigerated. So, for lunch I had a small order of jerk pork and one of those coconut waters. I could barely finish one half of that "small" order. The lunch came with a side of one of the most flavorful rice and peas I ever had. It was sneaky spicy and I loved it. The side of "vegetables" is usually a steamed mass of cabbage plopped into your dish, but not here- it was crisp and fresh and crunchy - like you see in one of those supermarket cole slaw kits. A great counter-balance to the jerk spices. And I haven't even gotten to the jerk pork yet. Well, there was a lot of big juicy chunks of meat in there, and they were great. Five stars all around for value, portion size, service, and of course..... Clover.
