So, there's this Jamaican spot in Brooklyn that I like to go to and the service there is the same as it is here; perfect for what it is! I wouldn't call this a dive per se, but a hole in the wall probably describes it best. But some of the best places in the world are holes in the wall. The food here was just as described by some of my fellow yelpers. The slaw was a perfect compliment to the jerk pork. The rice and beans were nothing special, but they're there to absorb your sauce of choice for your meat of choice. And for that they were spot on. This restaurant used to be good but I don't know what happened. It's been going downhill gradually but I decided to give it one more try; only because the normally congested parking lot was empty. I ordered stew chicken and it was terrible. It tasted like leftover curry chicken that they tried to pass off as something else. There wasn't a bit of gravy to be seen. Stewed where??? I don't know what other folks were talking about but the food was excellent I didn't even need to put any type of seasoning it was good just as it was and I had the homemade macaroni and cheese, and I think it was stew chicken it was spiced just right had a little bit of a kick to it. First timer and I need to keep it Real! I am Jamaican and grew up on true authentic good Jamaican food. Rating below: Jerk Pork 5/5 - some of the best I've ever had! It was season perfectly, and had a great spice to it! Oxtails 1/5 - some of the worst I've ever had. I'm sorry, but there is just no excuse for it. It lacked seasoning, was very fatty so you can tell it was not cleaned properly and had a sticky texture like cow-foot would be. Cold Cabbage side 5/5 - this was very good and had a nice sweetness to it. It complimented the jerk pork very well! Chicken Patty 1/5 - I ate 3 bites and discarded the rest. It didn't even look like chicken inside and probably had about a tablespoon of whatever meat that was in it. Was not served hot and honesty just wasn't good. Service 3/5 - the young lady who served me was pleasant but the young man behind the counter was not. When I asked him what type of soup they had, he rolled his eyes first and then answered me. Don't go here these ladies here are always angry at customers for no reason, even when you call on the phone to ask about an item on the menu they seem to think its ok to be rude to a paying customer over a question about food that somehow made this woman feel disrespected.. Ordered Baked Chicken and was unpleasantly surprised to find a makeshift stew chicken, which was not good at all. The rice was super soft and they poured on so much gravy...it was almost not palatable. The staff was courteous but it did not match the taste or the presentation of the meal. I do not write many reviews but in this case I must. I have sampled at least 10 different Jamaican restaurants in the Springfield Hartford area in the last few years and they all shared one characteristic - they toned down the flavors to appeal to the masses. Well that is certainly not the case at Paradise restaurant. I had the jerk pork and it was an assault upon my taste buds - and I mean that in a good way. It had the sweetness that you want from jerk but also the spiciness. The only problem that I had with it was when I got home and I was dividing the large dinner into lunch portions I sampled so much of the pork that I had no room for my scheduled dinner. But it was a price worth paying. And the jerk sauce is to die for. Do yourself a favor and go there !!!! read more

Great food! Diverse selection! Most Jamaican restaurants offer the normal foods like jerk chicken/pork, oxtails, and even curry goat. Paradise offers Cow foot and Tripe, Stewed Peas, Stewed Snapper and even Goat Head Soup. I was also very impressed with the the taste of their food. My son had the Jerk Chicken, my wife had the Goat Head Soup and I had the Oxtails. All of which were excellent. read more

The cashiers attitude is horrible and either the food is over priced or some one is over charging. I paid $15.00 for 4 pieces of fried chicken...and I asked for curry chicken and never received it. Back to the cashier though, while I was trying to order she just kept saying "HUH?" "Huh?" ...like who does that? (UPDATE) The food has always been great here. My problem was that I never knew what they sold or what those dishes in the showcase were because there was no signage anywhere. But Praise Jah, that is no longer a problem. Now I can gladly increase this place's star power. Stopped in for lunch today and what did I see? A nice new electronic menu screen that scrolled through Paradise's choices with size and pricing options. I counted five breakfast choices, 6 seafood choices, 8 chicken choices, 3 pork dishes, plus specialties, bulk pricing, and side dishes. I've been here over half a dozen times, and I've noticed how chill and friendly the counter lady and the cook are. I love the way the cook reaches into the showcase for a big hunk of pork, and hacks it to pieces on a cutting board right in front of your eyes. But some things you can't change i.e. jerk chicken or curry goat, and both these dishes are still good. I'll keep comments on the service short and sweet. Can you please STOP with the attitude! Came in on a whim and they did not disappoint. I got the large jerk chicken with rice and peas. The meal came with a vegetable( raw cabbage today) which I opt out of. They gave me more chicken and rice. Or I think they did. Chicken was not too spicy but flavorful. I also got a small ox Raul to try. I had asked for a small just oxtail but they do not just sell the meat alone, only in meals. Oxtail came with rice and peas and extra gravy if you want. Portions are generous. I love jerk chicken, they have super delicious jerk chicken. Then I tried jerk pork, arguably it's even better! Additional jerk sauce would be too spicy for my taste buds, I suspect the same for many others. I come here on a regular basis because when I want home cooking but don't actually wanna, y'know cook at home, there's no better place. Conveniently located right on Blue Hills Avenue, it's not far from Hartford or Windsor. It's within walking distance of other stores and has good parking, although many patrons love to drive the wrong way down the one way entrance. It's run and set up like many other Jamaican restaurants with the small-medium-large menu choices. You can eat in or takeaway. I don't jerk my own pork because to do it properly requires more time than I have on most days. But their jerk pork is one the best in country, and to not try such a delicacy is a sin in several religions, including scientology. Ask Tom Cruise. The other great classics featured on their menu are the Pepper Steak which isn't actually peppery at all, and the Curry Chicken. I'm not fond of their jerk chicken, simply because it doesn't love up to the Jerk Pork. All in all, Paradise is appropriately eponymous for a reason. I like this little Jamaican restaurant offering Jerk chicken, Pork, curried goat, chicken, fish in brown sauce, oxtail in gravy and collard greens, green beans, yams and of course rice and beans. I ordered the Jamaican Pepper Steak cooked with green and red peppers imparting a nice pepper tang served with gravy, slaw, rice and beans. The meat was pot roast tender and very delicious, the slaw is made with cabbage, carrots, green and red peppers and a vinaigrette of oil, white vinegar, a little sugar, salt and pepper, it was excellent, nicely done. If you want some heat there is a bottle of Grace's Very Hot Jamaican Pepper sauce which was just perfect to ratchet up the kick of this nicely seasoned savory Jamaican steak dish. read more

One of the advantages of living in Bloomfield is the heavy Jamaican population, which means we have more than our fair share of Jamaican restaurants. They are all similar in that you order from a counter, and either take it out, or sit in one of the few tables available. They all have the feel of being in the owners' extended home kitchen. They also all have similar menus, written down or otherwise. You learn, however, that this one makes better jerk, that one makes better oxtail, and the other one can't be beat for its soup or curried goat. When I get the urge for good jerk pork, Paradise is the place to go. You do have to know what everything is by the look...or just ask the proprietor if your favorite is available. This past time, I had chicken-foot soup - for the first time. It had two real chicken feet! The meat fell off the bones, and the broth was most flavorful. The jerk pork was wonderfully spiced, with plenty of meaty and fatty parts. The rice & beans soaked up all the delicious gravy, and they even threw on a few slices of sauteed plantain. I honestly don't think the food is bad at all, but i wish you could pay and order ahead or even use a delivery service, because they are EXTREMELY slow whenever they have more than 2 customers....like ZERO sense of urgency. You will literally wait 15-20 mins to be served, despite the food being made already. SERIOUSLY...walk out if u don't have the time to wait. The customer service was the nail in the coffin for me, because I waited over 15 mins for porridge, to be skipped when one of their friends cut the line. They then proceeded to use the 2 help staff they had to serve this ONE person. The cashier's attitude was already off putting on its own, and i ignored it for a while, because theyre black owned, and bad attitude doesnt equal bad food. Everyone was very pleased with their orders and most brought theirs home because the servings are so generous. I, however, found hairs in my food! Since Yelp categorized Paradise as Caribbean, I wasn't sure what kind of food it would be, but it's Jamaican and it's very good. Small, friendly takeout with a few tables. The person behind the counter explained what they had in all the serving trays behind the counter. I opted for a medium size combo with goat stew, jerk chicken, rice and peas, cabbage slaw, and a soda for $12. The goat stew turned out to be curry goat and it was very tasty. The jerk chicken was good, but it tasted similar to the commercial jerk marinade that I buy at the grocery store. The medium was a huge amount of food. I was there at 3 pm on Weds and there was a steady stream of people coming in and ordering even that late in the afternoon. Most of them were ordering the ox tail stew and made me wish that I had tried that. If I'm in the area again, I'll definitely be back. read more

Big fan. Came here right after moving to Bloomfield. Tiny little place with very limited parking. You'll definitely miss it if you're not paying attention! When I finally walked into the store there was a line for the food and no one was speaking English which was a good sign. I got to the counter and ordered the jerk chicken but unfortunately they were out. I decided to go for the Ox tail and peppered steak, both on large. Rice and slaw came with both of them, very very generous portions of juicy, perfectly seasoned meat stacked on top of a bed of rice and beans covered in gravy sauce. I grabbed the two carry out boxes and they felt really heavy so I was excited to get back home and try it. It was delicious. And I had leftovers for at least two days. Cheap and delicious. I can't say I have a huge amount of experience with Caribbean food so my appreciation of the food served at Paradise is purely based on the fact that the meat is cooked well and is incredibly well seasoned. During my past visit I got the Jerk Chicken meal with rice, beans and veggies. Upon placing my order, I was overjoyed at the sight of the woman behind the counter pulling a massive hunk of chicken out of the tray and hacking it to bits with a meat cleaver, bone and all. Love it. The Jerk Chicken is fabulous. It falls of the bone and has just the right amount of heat. This was an excellent lunch. Just a note, they don't seem to have any menu so you will have to ask a lot of questions at the counter. Generally they seem to have two chicken or pork dishes and a goat dish with various sides.
