I went here with a groupon and was really disappointed with how the whole thing went down. First, I understand when I get a groupon that you will probably have a higher volume of people trying to get in.. alas, I had to book an appointment TWO months in advance. Eventually I took a day off of work to get an earlier appointment a MONTH in advance. If you know you're going to have a problem scheduling people, sell less groupons! This is just simple business etiquette. When I finally got in Shaina was really nice and listened to what I wanted, but when she was done I realized it was definitely not as short as I wanted it to be. I told her this and she told me to just "wait it out" and go home and see how I feel. If I wanted it shorter she said I could just call back and come in again. No, Shaina, I can't do that. I have a job and I don't have money to come in and see you again. Also, when were you going to be able to fit me in? It took me over a month to get in! Really disappointed, as I am looking for a salon that I can stick with and a stylist who really cares about making sure I get what I want. I didn't feel this at Jerel @ 119. I am willing to spend money to take care of my hair if I feel my concerns and needs will be met. read more

I went here for the first time with a Living Social coupon. I'm not one to spent a lot on a haircut, so I love getting coupons, but I think I'll probably go back to Amanda here for another haircut, suck it up, and spend the big bucks. (Ok, it's not that expensive without a coupon - in the $60 range - but for me that's a LOT.) Easy to find location, nice building, clean salon and friendly people. I was helped right away and offered a beverage. Amanda (who is fabulous) was with me in about 5 minutes and she really seemed to listen to what I wanted - or lack thereof. I usually have an idea, but I didn't this time and told her to just go for it. The result is a fantastic haircut that I really love. It's exactly what I didn't know I always wanted. Thumbs up for the shampoo too. Very relaxing - and I needed it after the last few days at work. Nice to have finally found a salon I like in Boston! read more

I've been to Jerel twice now -- once for a routine trim, and once for a radical (for me) haircut, going from longish hair to chin-length. Amanda did a terrific job from the very vague description I gave of what I wanted, and I've been getting compliments on my do ever since. And the price is right as well. read more

I originally found Jerel through a Groupon for cut and highlight and have had excellent experiences here ever since! Shaina does such a great job...and even when there was a time that I didn't love it, she fixed it within a few days for me. I took a Jerel hiatus for a few months and was going elsewhere as it was less expensive. After not loving my hair for six or seven months, I came back and realized Shaina is totally worth the extra $$$. I won't be going anywhere else anytime soon. read more

Oh what a find in Shaina! Let me just say that I am SOOO picky with my hair that I feel I need a seriously strong drink right before each hair appointment. My hair is falling out like crazy so I always request a dry cut, I need both high and low lights but only in color not bleach, I need to have certain angles cut, I bring my own comb, a certain wash...Shaina was just perfect in everything. I got my first wet cut and was so glad I gave it a chance because she was amazing, in both cut and color. People were actually saying my hair looked longer AFTER the haircut due to the amazing high/low lights she put in. P.S. The girl doing the hair wash got a nice tip from me because that was the best hair washing experience I ever had as well. Will deff come back! read more

I went to Jerel a week ago for a simple cut and left as a new woman. Shaina gave me a shorter-than-chin-length asymmetric bob that I am in love with. She listened to what I wanted, made me feel comfortable, and most importantly, made me look amazing. I have never received so many compliments on my hair as I have in the past week. I am not used to people telling me my hair looks amazing and sophisticated (I am a 21 year old) yet fun and youthful. The atmosphere of the salon is upscale and fun. It is on the third floor of the building it is in and is near the top of Newbury St- a perfect location. I will definitely be back! read more

I decided to visit Jerel after reading great reviews on Yelp and Rue La La. I went for a basic haircut -- looking for something simple but with a bit more pizazz than the same-old cut I'd been getting for the last year or so. I loved the stylist -- she was immediately in tune with what I wanted, had great ideas, and was so easy to talk to/get along with. I really WANTED to love this cut. I walked out feeling like it was cut a bit shorter than I'd wanted, but hey, it was sure to grow out really well. I spent the next week feeling like Ramona Quimby -- short chop, hair sticking out all over, couldn't style it. I kept finding random chunks of hair that were noticeably longer than the rest of the head, and the bangs just wouldn't lie flat without a crazy cowlick. One month later, I finally sucked it up and went back to my old stylist. It was clear by then that the two sides of my head were completely different lengths, the back was longer than the front, and the layering was totally mismatched on either side. I don't think I've had this bad a butchering since college days at Supercuts. Again, I loved the stylist and wanted to love her cut. And I can forgive a blah cut or even one that just isn't "me." But the technical aspects of this cut were so bad, I feel like even one star was generous. It was a terrible waste of $80 and has made for a painful two months (full of significant and photo-heavy events) of growing this out. Went to shaina today with my groupon for cut, full highlight and blowout. The location is excellent and close to the T, and upon arrival I was warmly greeted by the receptionist and Shaina. She listened to what I wanted and took her time. She is a real pro and I love the layered cut and color she did. Jerel was also in the salon and very friendly. It was a comfortable, modern atmosphere and I can't wait to return. read more

I tried this place out with a Groupon for Zina and got hooked. Zina matched my color so well and knew exactly what I wanted in a cut. Looking back at pictures when I went to Jerel 119, my hair color/cut never looked better. Zina recommended products only when I asked and never tried to sell me anything otherwise. And the ladies who wash hair are amazing. Unfortunately, I moved away, but I enjoyed my time at Jerel 119. read more

I've seeing Mascia for about ten years for cut and color. She's amazing! She takes time to listen to your concerns and ideas (or lack thereof) and also provides some suggestions as well. She's very sweet and never pressures you into anything you don't want to do. read more

Went to Jerel for the first time today, came in with high expectations after having to wait over two months for an appointment after purchasing a groupon. I saw Shaina and absolutely live the color she chose for me! She took extra time on the cut and I'm very happy with the results! I showed them a picture of what I wanted- a nice ombré look. Instead. My whole head is one barely discernible shade lighter. It's not even close to what I asked for. And the stylist was very condescending (upon encountering a big tangle in my hair I got a very disgusted "oh... Wooow")The front desk receptionist was also rude and. What a great find! I purchased a Groupon recently and just came in for an appointment with Shaina. The salon is very relaxing, inviting and comfortable. Shaina took the time to ask me about me and what I wanted. The gloss treatment was relaxing and had a great affect on my hair. She struck the right balance between casual conversation and not chatting too much. She was so nice, and did a great job. I'll definitely return! I left feeling amazing. read more

I just spent over $250 on a cut and highlights at this salon that in the end were just okay. I really wanted to love it, I was hoping that this could be my new salon, but the stylist I had wasn't the nicest and left me sitting with my foil for about an hour without coming to check on it once. I mean my hair really is just okay, which is fine, but for $200+ I expect something that is great. I went in expecting to pay around $150/$160, that's reasonably priced for a cut and highlights but $250 was definitely not reasonable. read more

I bought a groupon for hair process and cut and when I try to schedule an appointment, I found out that only 1 person will be providing the service for the groupon deal. And the appointment I had to make would be 2 months away. That is just absolutely ridiculous and thank god I can call to get a refund from groupon on this. I've been seeing Amanda for about 8 years now (before Jerel owned a different salon where she worked) and I seriously love her. Not only is she funny, cool and a great listener (all girls know it's very important to click with your hairstylist!), she is incredibly talented. I started seeing Amanda in college and even after moving to NY for a few years, continued to come back to her on my visits to Boston. Of course after the move, we were reunited for good :) She knows exactly what I like, so even when I say I want something different this time - she knows how far to "push it." And she's colored my hair from light to dark to light again and everything in between, playing with highlights and low-lights. I've never left the salon not feeling like a million bucks! I think it's a great value for what you get and I also love how professional yet approachable (I hate stuck-up Newbury St stylists - yes, I've tried other salons too) everyone that works at Jerel 119 is. I've been going to Jerel for my hair now about 7 years. He is just amazing, love the color/cut and blow dry every time! My hair is a dark brown and he gives me beautiful, natural looking blonde highlights. My hair never looks brassy or fades out.. the color seems to last. Love the atmosphere too - everyone is always friendly and accommodating not to mention the great music. I really, really wanted to like Jerel 119, but I've never been so dissatisfied with a salon before. There is a nice ambience, but... A) whatever products they put in my hair were very pungent and lasted for at least 4 days and 4 showers, which was really gross. B) THE WORST highlights I've ever gotten, and what I asked for was not complicated. My hair is gold/warm tones and I ended up with several ashy/silver toned highlights...I think they ran out of the right color halfway through, so maybe that was the problem, but they didn't explain to me what was going on. The highlights also missed the last 1/8" of my hair at the roots, which looks terrible and not natural whatsoever! C) I'm not sure what dye they used, but my hair has never been so damaged before from highlights. It's been incredibly dry and damaged since going to Jerel, and I was a competitive swimmer constantly dousing my hair in chlorine for 15 years! It also took 2 hours just to get these basic highlights. Never going back, and I wouldn't recommend it. A generally disappointing experience. read more
