I contacted the salon via email, asking whether they might be able to cut / style a high quality human hair wig I recently purchased. I am trans (gender fluid). I was drawn to the salon, and encouraged, based on their blackroomsalon.com home page's description as a very inclusive salon. They responded with a quote for a dry-cut for $180. When I replied, saying there was no option on their booking app for a $180 haircut, they responded and withdrew their offer, saying (quote) "[requested stylist] hasn't worked with many wigs and after thinking about it more, we all want to make sure you receive the best possible service from someone with the right expertise. ... [we] hope you are able to find a stylist who specializes in this service." This was after a week of waiting for responses, and resorting to contacting Samantha via another means to ask about getting email responses. I was willing to drop off the wig in my male persona and pick it up when finished. It's a 24" long curly wig. Again: human hair. I wasted a week, to have my hopes raised for some help - as a shy and private trans person - only to feel rejected. Fine: if indeed the salon didn't feel they had the expertise, then they shouldn't have given me a quote and strung me along. ...and left to wonder if it was actually my non-transitioning, gender-fluid trans nature. Not "real trans"? Even giving them the benefit of the doubt there: I had my hopes raised and then dashed. And my time was wasted by slow responses, having to reach out to Samantha, and then having it all cancelled. I was going to drop off the wig. It's beautiful human hair. read more

I have been a client at BlackRoom since their opening (and with Sam and Jen for years prior at other establishments!), and consistently leave with a cut that makes me feel confident and amazing. Sam's cuts, even 3 weeks in, still look like I walked out the door of the salon yesterday. While they offer service on par with other higher-end salons, the atmosphere remains welcoming and unpretentious. Every team member I've encountered--from reception staff to assistants to stylists--has demonstrated exceptional kindness, flexibility, and attentiveness to client needs. It's worth noting that salons must maintain strict cancellation policies as their business depends on it; missed appointments mean money out of the stylist's pocket and wasted time that could have served another client in this exceptionally busy salon. read more

If there's someone who knows how to transform your hair, it's Chloe. I cannot even begin to tell you how stoked I am to have found her and this salon. Ever since I moved back to Boston, I've tried to find someone who I trusted with my hair and always ended up just waiting until I visited San Diego where I'd see my old stylist. Ridiculous, I know. I have very straight (Asian) hair, which can be super annoying to cut because if it's not straight or even, you will know it. Chloe always does a perfect job. I also did what I told myself I wouldn't do and got pandemic bangs (I know, I know). Chloe has been able to cut them super short, keep them long, blunt, choppy, etc. I don't think I'd trust anyone else to cut my hair at this point. FYI, there's no designated parking, but I've never had an issue finding metered parking. You can also book your appointment via an app, which makes scheduling a breeze. Not customer oriented AT ALL. Had Covid day before my appointment, called about 20 hours before my appointment instead of 24 and gave me a hard time regarding their cancellation policy. I went here for a haircut. Much more expensive ($95) than previous haircuts, but I assumed I would get a better haircut. The haircut has grown in very poorly, so I contacted them, sent pictures per their request and they responded that my only option was to come in and pay for another haircut. I was able to book a super rare next day appointment with Chloe. I was in town for a wedding and needed a fresh new cut to look good for pictures. Chloe and I spoke about the cut before hand and she knocked it out of the park. I feel super great with my appearance and think I am going to keep my hair like this regularly now. Only wish I lived in Boston so she could keep it up for me. Also everyone I interacted at in the salon was super nice, the vibe was really great, and overall loved it. got a hair cut from Brooke and couldn't be happier! Its easily one of the best hair cuts I've ever gotten and I really appreciated how much time she took/what a thorough job she did discussing what I wanted done (I have pretty bad anxiety so that part is often hard for me, but I felt really comfortable and we were able to cover everything). I could also tell she was being very mindful of my hair texture the entire time she was cutting it which is often an issue for me when I get my hair cut (I have wavy hair). I followed my stylist to Blackroom Salon when it first opened 1 year ago. Kait Howard was/is undoubtedly worth it. She tolerates my always-struggling-to-decide-what-looks-right-on-me hair requests, and always with the kindest disposition. Clearly, I adore her - so much so that I've convinced my husband to go as well - and now he has hair that is complimented more frequently than mine. I have grown to love this salon as well. The vibes are good, and there is always a smiling receptionist! You don't find that everywhere anymore. Additionally, it's clear that all the staff wants to be there and is invested in the place. You gotta see the Instagram stories of the blood sweat and tears that went into it! It is quite simply a self-care delight to visit this place. read more

TLDR: Paid $129 and never got a haircut. If you don't come on time - you will be charged in full for your haircut - you will not get a "first-time" warning, you will not get a credit, you will not get a priority for a better time, and likely will have to wait for a month+ for another cut. The place seems nice enough - but this policy just lost them a customer. ***** I came to this salon on a recommendation from a friend saying they are great with men's hair, especially in a town that specializes more in fades than longer cuts. I was growing my hair out and the first visit was a few snips - more so advice on how to grow my hair out and style it more than anything. This was $69 dollars - which I was happy to pay and tip. I scheduled a follow up for a few months down the line to continue the process and my stylist even offered $50 for the next cut since there was almost nothing she had to do on the first visit. The day came for the 2nd appointment and I was held up at work and was 1 hour late for the appointment. Since I was an hour late I was charged $50 dollars, given no haircut, and told to re-schedule for 2 months out. I love to support local businesses in the South End and the staff is friendly, so I figured I'd give them another shot - even though nothing was offered to help compensate for the mix-up in schedules. Again, my fault - I recommend a text reminder - but I'll own this mistake. The third appointment came and I had the appointment set for Wednesday in my calendar instead of Tuesday. Again, I was charged $79 this time and told to re-schedule or hope for a cancellation, but that I would pay in full again on top of the $79 charge today if I received a haircut. Once again - my mistake on the scheduling - they warned me and this had happened before. I've never written a yelp review - and can't believe I'm writing one now... but I suppose having paid $129 in "fines" for honest misunderstandings has led me to this Russian novel that likely no one will read. I wish I could go back but can't honestly justify spending that much money on a haircut without having any flexibility on last-minute re-schedules. It could be that I am 100% in the wrong and totally deserve this outcome, but I figured people should be aware of this before coming here. read more
