They serve super-premium ice cream at premium prices ... but do yourself a favor and splurge ... it's that good. Mrs. K. requested an ice cream. Specifically, a Jeni's as she'd seen some chef reviews commenting that it's the best chocolate ice cream. Off we go for a treat! Jeni's is in the Park Road Shopping Center which was, as usual, quite busy. They are an outbuilding in the middle of the arc which does make it a lot easier to access. We arrived when there wasn't a movie screening starting so we didn't have that traffic either. I chose the "standard" - two half scoops that prices at $6.60. Milkiest chocolate on top of darkest chocolate below. It filled the waffle cone and Mrs. K. pronounced it "excellent" as she consumed every last bit. I came here on a whim with friends. I've been to Jeni's plenty of times, but my first time at this location. The store is in the middle of the Park Rd Shoppes parking lot. They only have walk up orders, but you can sit outside to enjoy your sweet treat! The staff was friendly and let me try all the samples I wanted! So I waited in line, maybe 5 minutes, and my order was placed outdoors with a staff member. When it was my turn I made it to the window to pay and was handed my ice cream. They seem to have created a assembly line process for order. Place the order with staff outside staff inside scoops the ice cream, pay for said ice cream, receive ice cream, DEVOUR. I will say I am really not an ice cream person at all. Decided to try some while we were waiting for my son's guitar class to start. This is located in a shopping center so there are plenty of parking spaces to choose from. Unfortunately you can not enter the ice cream shop, you have to order from a window so if you go on a hot day, you will be melting. I decided to try the coffee flavor on a cone and OMG! This was the best ice cream I've had. Now I know what the hype is about with this place. The ice cream tasted so refreshing, and the coffee flavor was not overpowering like some other tastes. It had just the right amount of coffee flavor, and it did not leave super thirsty like other ice creams. It wasn't too expensive either, and they do have a good selection of flavors. Whenever I'm in a city for the first time, one of the things for which I always search is Jeni's Ice Cream parlors. Hurrah for Charlotte having so many of them! This was actually my first time at an outdoor parlor (hurrah again for being someplace warm in April!). So the experience was slightly different, because the staff was a crew of two - one taking and serving orders, and the other preparing them. So you don't get your ice cream immediately, but the wait is not unreasonable. I do wish the woman at the counter could have had a microphone and a speaker system. Her voice did not carry well over all the conversations and sounds outside, and she often had to call customers up several times. Not me though, I set a land speed record getting back up there, and their salted peanut butter with chocolate is now my new/current favorite flavor. The line was long but moved pretty fast. Super sweet workers. I got the goat cheese cherry (a classic fav-highly recommend) and the rainbow frozen yogurt (tart which I love so it's a new fav). First of all, I'm a HUGE fan of Jeni's Splendid chain of ice cream. I'm simply obsessed with "Brown Butter Almond Brittle" flavor! So today, I had this again...though this time, a simple single scoop on a cone. O-M-G!!! I just happen to be claustrophobic, and this teeny-tiny location really puts me off...think it's the smallest of the 3 locations, and definitely my least favorite. They did have Covid measures in place, but all just kinda awkward...'cuz again, the place is SO tiny!!! Also, their new menu does not list the prices...think it might have gone up as well, but I could be wrong. I also hated how they didn't give me the receipt. Guess I had to ask for it? One more thing I must mention. I noticed that in the past 2 years, there's been a change in many "walk-up" eateries...in that they are now expecting tips. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I just don't get why we should feel compelled to tip when we are standing in line. I mean, it's not as if we're being waited on...??? I guess many of these eateries, including Bubble Tea joints, now want to be treated like Bartenders? I just don't know what to think about this new trend in tipping. It's a bit much really...especially when a single scoop is already nearly 7 bucks. Again, maybe I'm just outdated...but then again, maybe not?? In any case, there are obviously a few things I didn't love about my experience today here...but my obsession stands. I'll call this review "A Rocky Road at My Favorite Ice Cream Shop." As an avid Jeni's aficionado who has frequented the Park Rd. location countless times, it pains me to recount tonight's visit that caused me to leave without any ice cream. Tonight we had a fun family date night. My niece who is in college, my 74-year-old mother, my sprightly 11-year-old nephew and I had a delicious dinner outing and agreed to head to Jeni's afterward. Little did we know the young order-taker, a female with dark red hair, would turn our sweet escapade into such an unpleasant ordeal. When it was our time to order, I approached the cashier with a smile and a singing "Hiiiiiiiii!" Maybe the extreme cheer irritated her. Anyhow, my nephew wanted to sample the new Genmaicha & Marshmallows flavor. She sternly said "we don't have any." I looked at the menu again. Genmaicha & Marshmallows was written on the menu outside and inside. My niece mentioned that it's written it on the menu. She repeated, "we don't have any." The nice guy with the dark hair working in the back said "yes we do. It's right here." The cashier simply said "oh, I lied" and handed over the sample. By the way, the Genmaicha & Marshmallows flavor was delish. We were ready to order it along with the new Sweet Potato flavor. We asked if they had the Sweet Potato flavor, and she said "NO." Her combative tone, delivery, and facial expression were 10x worse than her answer. As we were considering other flavor options, my niece casually asked the cashier if the Rea Road location had the Sweet Potato flavor. She repeated the "NO," this time a little louder but equally as stern and rude. To clarify, my niece said, "do you mean NO, like they don't have it at that location or NO, like you don't know?" The cashier replied "I--DON'T--KNOW." I was floored. Wow'd in the worst way. Her harshness was uncalled for. It made me question whether we had unknowingly stumbled into an alternate universe where sugar-induced smiles were forbidden. My mother and nephew's faces looked confused. They were questioning the enigma that was this young woman's hostility. In the face of this icy reception, I couldn't help but wonder, "does her boss have any idea she behaves this way? What would Jeni think if she heard about a family visiting her shop on cloud nine, then being met with unprovoked disrespect and irritability from a high-schooler? Is she angry because she has to work on a Friday night? Were the other patrons met with the same attitude?" Despite this unfortunate experience, I implore my fellow ice cream enthusiasts not to let one cold-hearted encounter deter you from visiting Jeni's. We left the Park Rd. location and drove roughly 15 miles or so to the Rea Rd. location. It was necessary to prevent potentially ruining my nephew's evening. And yes, the ice cream is THAT GOOD! read more
