    JFC Burger ($11.99)
    Susan K.

Origin: The brainchild of Emmet Moore, Jefferson Fry Co. is inspired by Moore's parents, who had a food truck and fish and chip business in Ireland. Having mastered preparation of potatoes, Moore identified a need for fries with toppings (known as dirty or loaded fries) after moving to the United States. His wife and several business partners have joined efforts to make fried potatoes be at the forefront of fast meals across Connecticut, starting with their first location opening (Cromwell) in 2018. Moore named the shop after U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, who, like Moore, looked to introduce the potato fries he had enjoyed abroad to these shores. Concept: Seventeen different toppings are available for potato fries. The team conjures familiar as well as creative combinations, with topping components made on site. This menu is most prominently displayed in the shop, with common accompaniments -- hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and hamburgers available as sidelines. Yes folks, "dirty fries" are meals in themselves! For example, chicken curry dirty fries are topped with grilled chicken, mushrooms, and onion that are enveloped in curry sauce. As of early 2023, there are four locations in Connecticut (Cromwell, Canton, Vernon, Storrs). The team hopes to eventually take the concept nationwide. Experience: I made my way to Jefferson Fry Co. because the Trophy Room at the Graduate Hotel is apparently closed on Sundays, and I was looking to get some semblance of what I had been looking forward to (the Trophy Room smash burger). The cashier told me the JFC burger is very popular (although she had not tried it herself), so I ordered that. I was pleasantly surprised by the way the different ingredients-- onions, double beef patties, plain fries, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and special sauce married perfectly, forming a marvelous alchemy of flavors and textures. I was glad that I thought to dine at the hotel's temporarily vacated Trophy Room, as the Jefferson Fry Co.'s fluorescent lit, television-flickering, music-blaring, crammed interior with busy, centrally located open kitchen was not befitting of savoring the $11.99 burger. (Other locations have more attractive designs.) Tip: A rotation of fries with different toppings is available for free each Friday with purchase of an entree. This makes for an easy way to try all that Jefferson Fry Co. has to offer. The weekly rotation of "FryDay" promotions is published on the company website. Check out the cookie butter shake... subtle flavor of Biscoff cookies.

Good fast food but not really that fast. The Thai fries were very tasty, however, they needed to be fried quite a bit more. More peanut sauce please, as well. The portobello mushroom sandwich again was good, but it was such a thin slice that you could hardly taste anything but the very crispy coating. Again, more of the garlic aioli promised on the menu. They bottle several flavors of their own soda, but also have a limited selection of Coca-Cola fountain drinks, including a sweet, black tea and Powerade.

After a late night all I wanted was a burger and fries! There are many fry combinations to try. We went with the BBQ fries. They are thick cut fries topped with pulled pork, bbq sauce and some cole slaw. It sounded amazing but was not as full of flavor as you'd expect. I ordered a single original burger and my son got the double fry cheeseburger. He was very happy with his burger. Mine was served without mayo or ketchup and came with one pickle slice. I had to ask them to put on the condiments and they did, but barely. The vibe was cool. It is a fast food place but there were televisions around the space playing the formula one race. My son was happy.

Size of fries vs the comically tiny sauce that I had to pay extra for !

Overall I really love their fries but I feel a little ripped off with my go-to order. THE FOOD: -fresh. Cut. Fries. LOVE THEM! They are delicious and the perfect amount of crispy on the outside and not dried out on the inside. -my usual order is the regular fries, creole style, with garlic aioli sauce. The creole is my favorite seasoning to add to fries. I am a ketchup hater so usually I get cheese at other places but the garlic aioli is next level. -Cons: the garlic sauce is a "special" sauce which the online menu says is a 50cent additional cost. When I placed my order they charged $1 extra so I figured it would be 2 containers of the side sauce which would be perfect (considering side salad dressing type of containers). Unfortunately when I got home with my order I saw the TEENIEST, TINIEST side of sauce I have ever seen. I didn't even know plastic containers came that small. I am not someone who uses a lot of sauce per dip and it was still enough for about 1/4 of the container of fries. If you are a heavy sauce person I wish you the best of luck! You'll get about 4 fries worth of dipping. See my image for reference, it was the size of my thumb knuckle. -additionally, when I placed my online order I un-checked the box that said salt and checked the creole but my fries were extremely salty so it seems like it was salt + creole, not just creole seasoning. THE ATMOSPHERE -the Storrs location is new and fully renovated. I really like the colors and feel of it. -one down side are the seats in the corner along Dog Lane are awkwardly close to where people need to stand to fill their fountain drink THE STAFF -the times I've been in there it was the same cashier and they were very friendly and helpful! -I did ask for a fork since I planned to eat a little on the go and was told there was one in the bag, so I left. But there was not a fork in the bag unfortunately. Overall, I really like this restaurant but hope they will start providing a reasonable amount of sauce to go with their fries. Paying $1 for a side of sauce meant fit for an infant is ridiculous. -

I understand that the trailer is presently known as Missy's Top Dog at least in some circles. I'm not sure if that's a change. When the Channel 3 Best Hot Dog in CT bracket was released, I noticed Missy's Top Dog was on it. I was able to get there shortly before their 3 pm closing recently. I'm a fan. First of all, although they were closing soon, there was a steady stream of people while I was in the area. There was never a long line, but I was not able to take a pic of the hot dog shaped trailer without a person blocking the sign. MTD is the only place I know of using Thumann's Hit Dogs from New Jersey. MTD steams the dogs and it looked like they had a bit of a dirty water thing maybe going on. MTD has several specialty dogs, but nothing too far out of the ordinary. I ordered a Cajun with "Orleans Relish", chili and pepper jack. I really liked the dog, especially for a steamed dog. Nice flavor. Nice snap. The toppings worked really well together. The chili sauce was meaty and not heavily seasoned. The relish provided a nice jolt of sweet acidity. I also ordered the MTD clasic dog, which had artfully layered catsup, mustard, relish and onions. Same tasty, snappy dog. Nice ratio of toppings. I'm assuming Missy was the person helping me because she seemed to have the confidence and pride of an owner. She was very friendly and engaging in my brief time speaking with her. Since the dogs were steamed, they came out right away. I can't say Missy's Top Dog's cracks my Top Tier of CT Dogs, but it's just a tier down and I enthusiastically recommend MTD, even if you have to drive a bit out of your way. 4.25 Stars

Even the bathrooms were noticeably nice, particularly for such a fast-paced lunch spot. I had the Chicago Dog and the House Dog. We've been on the hunt for a good Chicago dog that's, you know... closer than Chicago, so I was glad to see one on the menu. It was quite good, but not what I expected based on the ones I remember from Chicago. This version leaned heavier on the relish and toppings, didn't have the bright green relish, and ended up a little messier overall. It did match exactly what the menu described, though, so that part's on me for not reading it more closely. All that micro-complaining aside, I'd get it again--though I may first try to work through the extensive menu a bit. There are some great options, and you should expect to struggle deciding (maybe check the menu in advance). The House Dog was delicious, but also pretty messy--definitely grab some napkins. Prices were a tiny bit higher than I'd expect for hot dogs, but the quality, presentation, and overall vibe seemed aligned with that. Overall, Riley's is a great option if you want a nicer sit-down hot dog experience with lots of choices and a comfortable atmosphere. I'd go back, especially to try more of the specialty dogs.

But then what about coming here if I was in such a hurry? Well, I actually learned of this place's existence when I was going to do the Taichi Tea Elite Experience only to find that I had never been confirmed in that event. But after looking at earlier Taichi Tea reviews that day and finding a reviewer who reviewed both that place and this one, I knew this place needed my visit at some point. Also, I had to wait till tonight to come in big part because I had been on medical recovery from a stomach infection since last month, so I wanted to make sure I was feeling better first so I could give this place the best chance possible to excel. Tonight was actually my 3rd time ordering through the Yelp app, but the other 2 times had mixed results. One place confirmed my order while the other canceled twice, so this order was also a test to see if ordering through Yelp was reliable or not. Through God's good graces, this was a success! Service from the employees there was pretty friendly to boot too. So far so good! Now let's get into my order. I ordered three dogs (the Classic, the Mozzarella Cheddar, and then the Squid Ink half and half). All told, I paid $24.77, and that amount includes a $6.55 tip. So yes, this place is actually quite affordable in New Haven! And boy oh BOY are these three worth it! Before I continue, I will remark another dog with the potato crusting done on it. That looked pretty gas (is that a term kids use these days?). I started with the Squid Ink, and honestly, what they did with that thing is genius! The breading is black as squid ink should be, and the hot dog portion at the bottom is crated in such a way to resemble a squid's tentacles (sorry Squidward). It was fire! For the classic, I dipped that in honey mustard, one of my favorite condiments to have on any hot dog. It was pretty good too. And the mozzarella cheddar finished it off! All three were really good! If I had to pick my favorite, I'd say the Squid Ink dog is definitely the winner of the night. I just can't get over how awesome that creativity was. It was more than an "Oh K-Dog". It was an "Oh My God, These Dogs Rule" K-Dogs! I said what I said. Good night everybody!

The chili, while it tastes good is a little bland and my wife would have liked a little more flavor in the Sauerkraut too.
