JD's is a local institution near the SMU campus, and it is quite possibly the best place to get cookies in Dallas. The semi-sweet chocolate chip is what dreams are made of -- soft, gooey, and with the perfect chip to cookie ratio. Good luck not wrecking your diet. If you're lucky enough to be there on a day when there are actually cookies in the "day old" case, snag all of them as they are half-price but retain their out-of-the-oven awesomeness. Tucked away within more or less a single square mile of the Highland Park area are three bakeries that are known either in part or by definition for their cookies. While closely located to one another, each of these three cookie shops has a totally different vibe. Known for their award winning Chocolate Chip cookies, Toni Rivard's Creme de la Cookie is a more comprehensive bakery, and I imagine they even do far more business on cake balls, cupcakes and other delicacies than they do on cookies. CC definitely aims for the more gourmet atmosphere that I have no doubt brings in the Highland Park moms and Louie V yielding SMU students by the droves, but I won't say for a second that it's a bad thing. JD's Chippery and Great One Cookie Co on the other hand are strictly cookie spots, although even between the two there's a different vibe. JD's has been here for more than 30 years, and in every way they've become part of the community as a mom and pop cookie shop. Great One Cookie Co on the other hand is more of a newcomer, and Pam Denesuk's small but modern storefront will have you feeling like you've truly found a hidden gem in the city with the names of cookies simply displayed with the actual wares hidden in the back. Single Star / Single Star / Single Star Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Another point of diversity amongst these three cookie shops related to both price and portion size. Here's a breakdown - Creme de la Cookie: Average price of $1.20 per cookie JD's Chippery: Average price of $0.75 per cookie Great One Cookie Company: Average price of $2.00 per cookie You can browse my pictures if you like to get a sense for the size of each shop's cookie, and depending on which review you're reading you'll see one grouping of the three depicted below, but for reference Creme de la Cookie and Great One Cookie Company both had what I would call standard sized cookies whereas JD's had slightly smaller cookies. The portion size between JD's and the others is reflected in the price, but Great One Cookie Company was a real outlier with prices that were nearly twice that of portion similar Creme de la Cookie. Worth it? I suppose that depends, but it's certainly worth pointing out. Single Star / Single Star / Single Star Stars 3 and 4: How was the food (or in this case, the cookies)? Let's not kid ourselves here: The Chocolate Chip Cookie is the rightful benchmark for how all cookies should be measured, so for this dual star category I decided to dish out one star for the Chocolate Chip cookie alone and a second based on the others. With respect to the first star, this was essentially a runaway victory for JD's Chippery for two reasons. First and foremost, call me crazy, but I like my cookies to have a slightly crunchy outside and a soft inside, and that's exactly what JD's Chocolate Chip cookies had. My Creme de la Chocolate Chip Cookie was soft with the upside of having the chocolate chips essentially melted into the rest of the cookie, but the lack of a crunch left me a tad bit unsatisfied. Great One's chocolate chip cookie was soft to the point of having me wondering whether or not it was cooked all the way through, but this was made up for by having a seriously absurd quantity of chocolate chips. The second reason behind my thinking that JD's Chocolate Chip cookies claimed the category came down to the cookie ex-Chocolate Chips, where JD's had an absolutely delicious unique flavor that I can't quite place whereas CC and GO were more plain if you go a bite without any chocolate chips. With the second star in mind, JD's once again claimed a crown of sorts thanks to their cinnamon packed Snickerdoodle that also packed a crunch when compared to the softer and more mildly flavored doodles from Creme and Great One. One thing I will point out is that the Ginger Snap at Creme de la Cookie was fantastic, and the Peanut Butter Pretzel Chocolate Chip offering at Great One should be sampled by all cookie enthusiasts. Single Star / Dual Stars / Single Star Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? So there you have it folks. Holy buttery goodness batman. In a serious need for some chocolate chip goodness, we stopped by this place after eating a delectable lean cuisine for lunch. Yeah I know, be jealous. :/ So they sell cookies by weight, which the lady says that it's a bit of a better deal until you hit about 9 cookies. And then you might as well buy a dozen, b/c the dozen rate is better. Or something. My eyes were sorta glued to the case of cookies and I started drooling so her words were in one ear out the other. I bought 2 cookies for myself, 2 for my friend in crime, and we brought back 2 more for some other coworkers that I love. I got a semisweet chocolate chip which was delish. I thought they looked a bit dry but this was not the case at all. Looks can be deceiving my friends. My other cookie was an oatmeal chocolate chip, which I only had about a 1/4 of before I wanted to explode. It had a light coconutty type taste to it, which I normally find from the oatmeal. Mm mm good. They were good enough that I craved some milk and I'm not a cow juice person. We also got a snickerdoodle and a sugar, both of which I can not comment on, but heard they were amazing. I don't like to write bad reviews BUT....the show must go on. I had a craving for sweets that just wouldn't quit. My heart yearned for tiff treats but it was rush hour so I decided to try something new & I stumbled across this place which wasn't too far from me. With my mouth watering I floored it over to this bakery to get what I felt I deserved (amazing cookies) after a long, hard week on the job. What I got was far from amazing. :'( Upon walked in I was greeted with terrific 5 star service from the friendly cashier. I opted for the cookies fresh from the oven: snikerdoodle, chocolate chip, sugar & oatmeal raisin. As I walked to the car I could barely contain myself so I ripped into the bag and had 4 of the most subpar, raw in the middle, flavor lacking cookies I could ever imagine :(. Bite after bite my heart sank until it hit the floor. I would consider a trip to McDonalds or your local DMV an upgrade in customer service over this place. Before today, we raved about this bakery. But, beneath it's sugar coating, this place is beyond unfriendly. We're glad their staff helped us see this today before we gave them any more of our business. On our way to pick up our order of 6 dozen cookies, traffic came to a halt. Our ETA then ran past their closing time. Disappointed, we called the store, informed them we'd be late, but were over-the-moon happy when they said they'd stay open for us. Over 20 miles down the road (and within one mile of the store) their staff called back with a different tone. A woman abruptly told us "they'd decided to go home because they were tired and had been working all day." When we pleaded, saying we'd just drove all that way and were within sight of their location, she literally mocked us and laughed unsympathetically. She ended the call with "I hope you'll come back to get your order, or not... bye." It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say it was the worst customer service any of us had ever experienced. read more

Today I was having a pity party. Hate my job, hate my body, hate my life! Being out of Zoloft, I decided to self-medicate with some good ol' comfort food at Bubba's for lunch and couldn't pass up a dose of chocolate from Dr. Chippery to get me through the other half of my day. The cookies got the job done, but they weren't that great. They were gooey and moist - I don' t mind them being a little undercooked - but I didn't think they had alot of flavor. We got a dozen that included peanut butter, snickerdoodle, oatmeal raisin, oatmeal choc chip and choc chip. I was soooo bad ....I had a pb, snickerdoodle and oatmeal choc chip and none of them were satisfying...the best of the bunch was the oatmeal choc chip. If your sick of those grocery store cookies and want one like they use to be made you can find them here. I don't know how they get them so moist and I probably don't want to know the fat content, but if your in search of a cookie the nutritonal content just isn't important right? Depending on the time of day you go, parking can be a bit of a challenge. if you can fight through the frustration of finding a spot the short walk is worth it. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in the end, they are just cookies. Today was going to be a long day of studying for me so I figured I would stop by and grab a bag of these famous cookies to help me get through it. The verdict: They are good cookies, some are better then others for sure, but I really thought they were only marginally better than the cookies you can pick up from any grocery store in town. Now, I usually try to be a pretty healthy eater, but when it comes to sweets, all bets are off. Even though I love the goodness of a soft, chewy cookie, the overpowering sense that I was consuming tons of fat and butter was inescapable to me as I chowed down on cookies from JD's Chippery. Yes, the cookies are soft and chewy - but to me they were nothing sensational. The insides were translucent (from butter? from undercookedness?) I almost wish they were thinner. There was a good selection of cookies when I went in the morning. The peanut butter cookie wasn't peanut-buttery enough, but I did like how the chocolate chip cookie wasn't overly sweet. The snickerdoodle was pretty good, but a little more baking would have done the trick for me. Besides cookies, there is also a selection of muffins, which I didn't get a chance to try. Parking looks like it would be a hassle - you would probably have better luck parking within Snider Plaza and then walking around. Yes, the cookies at JD's Chippery are better than most supermarket bakery or (shudder) packaged cookies, but I have to say, I was a little disappointed by my Chippery experience. read more

Am I the first for this awesome cookie store? Tucked away in its little corner at Hillcrest and Airline in Snider Plaza, there is this awesome cookie store that has been there for years. This cookie shop is a staple to the Highland Park people and those that are lucky enough to pay them a visit. For me, its the Tiff's Treats of Dallas (even though there is a Tiff's Treats now). These cookies are always sooooooooooo SOFT and soo FRESH. They've got yummy flavors like snickerdoodle, chocolate chip, peanut butter, etc etc. My favorites here are the snickerdoodle and chocolate chip. What's best about them is also the fact that they are not too sweet. These cookies just melt in your mouth and you can't but want to swing by daily for one of these, especially if you went to school right across the street at SMU. read more

Apparently I am late to the party as I have lived in Dallas for years and had never noticed or heard of JD's Chippery until recently when a friend I was walking Snider Plaza with said we had to stop in. Let me start by saying the staff is super friendly and even offered to get me a cookie that was straight out of the oven instead of from the pile of delicious looking treats behind the counter. I only wish that the cookies would have been better. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I just wasnt overly impressed. Were they good? Sure. The best? Not even close. This place is a little bit of heaven tucked neatly into the Snyder Plaza area. Their cookies are absolute perfection! Dieters beware: this is not the place to go for 'healthy' snacks. In fact, I much prefer to venture here when I'm feeling particularly reckless when it comes to food. I have never had a better snickerdoodle - they are my weakness. These are the cookies I judge all other cookies on. Even my mom's. But she forgives me because she is also addicted to these cookies. I worship the snickerdoodles. I'm not a huge fan of the chocolate chip but the cookies are still delicious. Also the muffins are delectable. I typically go with the Ham and Cheese or the Double Chocolate Chip. The lemonade and limeade, especially with cherry are wonderful. Some times however they can be too sweet, I can never finnish one in only one sitting. But they taste great later too, (in my place anything from here never last more than 12 hrs). They will heat your muffin too. It's easy to do it later though, microwave it covered (to help keep in the moisture) for 30 seconds. WARNING! Cash only! I know, complain all you want but it's cheap enough. Honestly if you don't have $3 cash you have some issues. Parking can also be a huge pain but if you can wait it is well worth it. read more

I also used to love their cherry limeades. However I went back twice recently and got a cherry limeade both times. I went to JD's based on a recommendation from a friend and was seriously impressed! I would definitely recommend going if you find yourself in the area. Unless you consider yourself a cookie connoisseur or have serious cookie cravings, I would probably not go out of my way to come here. That said, I was pretty thrilled that I found myself in the neighborhood. I had a milk chocolate chip cookie, a macadamia coconut cookie and a semi sweet chocolate chip cookie with nuts. Prices are very reasonable. The cookies I got were warm - right out of the oven. The edges were perfectly crispy and the insides were just mildly undercooked, which I believe most people like. Texture was spot on. I was pretty disappointed with the omission or lack of salt in their recipe. You can tell. It's a letdown. You can tell many of their competitors use a small amount of salt but JD's doesn't. Their prime location is a huge plus for business I'm sure. Again, my only comment is that their cookie dough needs to have a tiny bit of salt and that makes ALL the difference. I would not go back. Big chewy thick gewy cookies are my fav that's what I got and only $0.95 each. I had milk chocolate & peanut butter chocolate chip. I am a huge cookie cake fan so maybe one day I'll try that. I am not a person who really is big on sweets, but I have one major weakness, warm chocolate chip cookies. JD's cookies are very unique, there is a buttermilk kind of flavor to them and the texture is just right when they are warm. I will make a 20 min drive, and have before several times, just for this. When I need a diet coke and muffin fix, this is my place. The oat branana is a tasty treat when you are trying to make a healthy choice. If I don't care to be good, I almost always choose the Apple Spice, sometimes the Banana Nut. Back in high school (read, days of a faster metabolism), my choice was the double chocolate. I don't care as much for their cookies as some do, but I think I am in the minority. I like my cookies more well-done and these are definitely of the raw-in-the-middle variety. There is one exception to everything I have just said about their cookies and it is called the Snickerdoodle. Delicious. Their fountain drinks are great and I love that they offer "rabbit pellet" ice. They offer two drink sizes - small and large. The small isn't much, but the large is humongous. Be forewarned that it doesn't fit well in standard cup holders. Also, they are a cash only place. They do offer an ATM machine. JD's cookies are my favorite cookies ever. They are unique - soft, dense, chewy, always super fresh. They may not be the cookie for everyone, but they are for me and many I know. JD's has always been generous with donations for various Park Cities functions, and there was always great excitement when their cookies were spotted. My favorite are semi-sweet chocolate chip and snickerdoodle. A half-dozen box of JD's cookies are a perfect gift to make someone's day. JD's Chippery also makes muffins in the morning. Their pumpkin muffin rocks my world. My parents are partial to ham & cheese. These are BIG muffins. They are always perfectly cooked with just the right amount of texture on the muffin top. Parking is unfortunate during peak hours. Look for a spot right in front or just across the street in front of the bank first. BEWARE BEFORE YOU BUY!!! These cookies will RUIN every other cookie you will have afterwards. Forever. If you eat them warm and fresh out of the oven they might ruin all other foods for you. I remember my first cookie from JD's. I was at a student meeting at SMU and someone brought some cookies. Chocolate chip wasn't my favorite type of cookie at the time, but that's what was left in the box so I gave it a try. My first thought after my first bite, "chocolate chip is my favorite now." With how good their cookies are I almost expect the workers there to insist I call them "your majesty." Don't be confused by my 5-star rating. I've grown up with JDs. Over the years, my tastes have changed, but one thing has stayed the same: my appetite for cookies and muffins. I'll keep it short and sweet, just like they do. Must-haves: 1. Snickerdoodles. They will change your life. 2. Pineapple muffins. I know it sounds strange, but they are heavenly. (And only offered for the spring and summer on Monday-Wednesday-Friday, and they usually sell out by about 9am, so set your alarms people!) They're moist, flecked with bits of pineapple and topped with toasted coconut. Almost like pineapple upside down cake...for breakfast. 3. Blueberry Oat Bran muffins. They're dense, nutty, and still very blueberry-y. And they're relatively healthy, boasting less than 2 grams of fat and--dare I believe it--under 200 calories?? 4. Cherry limeade. I always get it carbonated, it's more refreshing that way. 5. Ham and cheese muffins. If you're feeling dangerous (or need something to balance out the sweetness of that pineapple). 6. Bran muffins. DON'T DISMISS THIS ONE. It's not one of the healthified muffins, and I know it's got the word "bran" in it, but it's the perfect balance of sweetness, with a hint of cinnamon, and the most amazing texture I've ever had in a muffin.
