I initially thought about taking off a star because John arrived outside of my appointment window, a pet peeve of mine, but then I remembered a few things: he came on a Sunday, on less than a day's notice, Arlington is very far from Upper Marlboro, the appointment before me went over, which can happen to anyone, and most importantly, small businesses are the backbone of America. John was very polite and immediately told me my HVAC closet smelled because a mouse died in there. He also called a relative while at my place and on the way home to give me their suggestions on dealing with the smell, which has nothing to do with HVAC and is above and beyond in my opinion. Yes, I did have to pay the $100 fee to come out. I paid in cash to not have to pay the 10% processing fee. I was fine with paying this to have someone come out so quickly, and on a Sunday. Did a great job when my "New" HVAC system on my home I purchased a few months prior started collecting water. The tech Brandon was knowledgeable and kept me updated the entire time. The only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is because whomever I booked with didn't properly explain how the pricing worked beforehand which would have influenced my decision to use this company or not. Use extreme caution with this company. I believe that they either do not know what they're doing or are simply trying to scam people into replacing as many units as possible. I used this company with my primary residence last year and they first suggested that a new control board on the furnace was needed, or that it needed to be completely replaced with one of a better brand (which would cost $12k). Eventually we had someone else come and fix it. Now, 5 months later, I accidentally contacted them again for assistance at my rental property, thinking that I was contacting a different company. The same folks came out and surprise, surprise, suggested that a new control board was needed once again, or a complete replacement of the system (10k, 15k or 21k options). We just had a different company come out and easily fix the system for a reasonable price in an hour. They caused so much unnecessary stress. Like the other reviews stated, they also charge $10 more than their stated $100 service fee because of "taxes and credit card fees". Use caution. Very friendly. I write this review because I was quoted a $100.00 "service" fee. When it was determined, quite quickly, that my unit had a leak and needed to filled, I was taken aback by the fill price so I declined. I also declined a full replace of my HVAC system even though I was given multiple options. It was quite expensive. I thanked the gentlemen (Jonathan and his apprentice*), letting them know I could not afford it at this time and perhaps would give them a call in the future should my fortunes change. All very pleasant. Upon leaving as I took out my card, Jonathan charged me $110.00. When I checked the transactions, I texted Jonathan about the extra $10.00. He replied (summarizing): "Tax and Card Fee". I have been in my home 25 years with numerous contractor calls, I have NEVER seen anyone charge TAX on a service only call (no labor). Unfortunately, would not recommend. In January, I hired JD Mechanical to install a smart thermostat--either an Ecobee, or Google Nest, both of which I had on hand. The two men who came were friendly but, after poking around for several hours--and trying to upsell me a $10k new furnace--they informed me that they couldn't install a smart thermostat because my HVAC and wiring were supposedly not compatible and also my heat/boiler system was broken (it wasn't). Although they did not install any smart thermostat, they charged me $380 for their time--basically for trying, but not succeeding. They did put back on my original non-smart thermostat but it wouldn't turn on my heat/boiler and could only activate the A/C. That was a big problem because it was January and very cold. Two days later I asked my handyman to try and he installed the Google Nest thermostat just fine, and the heat/boiler worked as normal. So, in sum, I did not have a good experience because I paid JD Mechanical for a service that they did not complete, even though it was possible to do even by a non-HVAC expert. I asked JD Mechanical for a refund, given that they were wrong both about the ability to install a Google Nest thermostat and about my boiler, but they refused. read more

I am so glad I found this family owned business. My furnace was shot and I had been waiting a few days for estimates from 2 other companies. I decided to go on yelp to see if I could find someone who would be able to get me an estimate quicker, so I could get work started. I saw that JD Mechanical had good reviews, so I sent a quick message. Jonathan responded right away and proceeded to give me an estimate for a new furnace via email. You could tell he knew what he was talking about and he was very thorough. These guys are the real deal. This last month, my furnace was on its last legs. Right before a snowstorm hit the first week of January, they came out to investigate why my furnace gave out. At first, they recommended a furnace replacement as my furcase was approximately 30 years old. But I asked them to just fix it, thinking I could ride it out until summer to do the replacement. So they got it up and running again. I was highly pleased by that since they were responsive and got it fixed fast. Unfortunately, I made the wrong decision as my furnace began to wind down in February and suddenly began to shoot smoke thru my vents one night as it's motors were finally burning out. Luckily, I could turn it off immediately and rely on a couple space heaters as it happened during a warmer week. I Immediately called JD the next morning and told them that a furnace replacement was in order. It took a couple days to order the furnace and get it in and to my door, but they came and got it up and running. I know I'm going to have to eventually replace my upstairs HVAC but I was hoping it'd hold on for a bit longer because I just replaced my downstairs HVAC. Then about 2 weeks ago the heat stopped working upstairs. I had Michael&Sons come out (since they are who put in the new HVAC downstairs). The tech agreed it was nearing the end but to keep it working for now it would need a new control board. We paid the $89 service fee, he said it'd be $650 for the control board and someone from the service dept would contact me about the part. Long story short no one ever contacted me. Over 2 weeks I called 2 more times and the second I told them to just cancel the order because I couldn't wait indefinitely. God's giving us good weather right now but as they said in Westeros- WINTER IS COMING and I have no heat in my nursery or upstairs bedrooms! I turned to Yelp and found JD Mechanical Services and Heating. Mr. Jonathan came out in less than 2 hours from when I called. He originally didn't think it was the motherboard that was the problem. He ended up replacing the igniter but no power was going to it so he did have to replace the control board. Where Michael&Sons made me wait 2 weeks and after I contacted them they said it could take another 10 days to get the part, Mr. Jonathan got the parts and I had heat by the end of the same day he came to do the evaluation. The price in the end was about the same. He was polite, knowledgeable and explained things so I could understand. He educated me about my aged HVAC system, answered my questions and I am saving up now for when the time comes for a replacement. He tested my entire system which surprisingly was still in spec. Took some time for me to post, but here it is. I am not the first and I know I won't be the last to say fantastic company! I lost my HVAC system last December a week before Christmas (long story), had furnace heat prior that went out in September and had a third party person put a heat pump in my existing AC system that was heat pump capable, all wrong and basically shut everything down, and could have burnt my house down. Called JD mechanical because I just thought the heat pump that was installed wasn't worked effectively, they came out the next day, took one look and saw my entire unit was frozen solid! found all the errors with what the third party had done, and was also able to commend the work others had done correctly. The owner, electrician and another employee, gave me several options of how to handle the situation, another furnace, whole new system, a pellet stove (just to get me through winter) going over every scenario financially, and supporting what I felt my long term best interests where. They surveyed my home and was able to give me an estimate then that never changed after the day for the work that needed to be done, if I chose to move forward. No other company at this point would even take my call this close to Christmas. Needless to say no heat in December is horrible, I decided to have the company come, and they came the three days before Christmas to my 1930's to put a new HVAc system, wrap air ducts and set up the electric to support the system. They spent the next 18hrs in my home, and worked till it was all done and my home was comfortable. The work was done neatly, team seemed knowledgeable and collaborated well with each other to get the work done. Most of all the wanted to make sure the work was thorough, and complete. I can tell their word is important to them and it meant a lot to me. Before they left I had my appointments set for my system to be checked for the summer. I have been contacted at least twice to see how things are going and reminded we meet in a few weeks to go over the system. read more

Please take caution when working with this company. They came out to my property to service my HVAC unit that was not cooling. They established that there was high head pressure and that the only way to solve this was to clean the coils. They cleaned the coils and the high head pressure did not do down. As a result the indoor and outdoor units needed to be replaced. They made me feel like I had no options and tried to pressure me into this huge purchase without additional due diligence. I declined and decided to get a second opinion. Thank god I did because the second company discovered that there was not a drop of freon in the condenser and that the capacitor needed to be replaced. They came on Saturday the next day. John troubleshot my system told me what the problem was and got busy on replacing the AC since it was 15 years I decided to replace my unit. I really appreciate that he was able to give an estimate over the phone once the problem was described (a lot of other companies require a diagnosis ($100+) before they will give you any idea of what their rates are, which I suppose is fine when you have no idea what kind of repair you need, but I don't understand why more can't be like JD Mechanical when the problem is obvious and easy to describe). Scheduling was easy and the repair was thorough, nothing was rushed and Jonathan explained what all of the readings on his equipment meant, compared them against the plates on my equipment and advised how to get each one within manufacturer's specifications - right-size motors, capacitors, coolant charge level, etc. While the company is still fairly young, Jonathan brings plenty of prior experience and definitely knows his stuff, you won't regret hiring him. read more
