What does one do when your HVAC System dies while temperatures reach nearly 100 degrees on the East Coast during the summer of 2025, and your grandchildren are visiting for the summer? Don't panic! First, we had to recognize that we were living in an old house where the quality of the air may not have been well maintained throughout the years, and we needed more than an upgrade, we required the installation of a new high energy efficient HVAC System, and we had little expertise in selecting one. The HVAC System was a major investment for my family and requires due diligence on the part of the homeowner. Research is required in selecting a contractor with proven professionalism, reliability, and commitment to customer service. Your initial research should include such things as: specifications, the latest technology, industry trends reflective of energy efficient ratings, products with benefits for the family, the pros and cons of models and brands, and consistent customer reviews. We reviewed several contractors, large and small, and selected one that we felt suited our family's needs and our home's challenges. PEPCO, our energy company, offered a quick energy check for our home, and we accepted it, looking for energy efficient recommendations. We chose a small contractor, McMurray's Heating and Air Conditioning Company, which stood out because of their knowledge, assessment of our home, ability to listen, passion for providing excellent customer service, and my family's expectations of energy conservation measures. We appreciated McMurray's thoughtful recommendations and the reasoning associated with them, in language that we understood. The installation was scheduled to be completed in one day, and that was accomplished. The McMurray team arrived early, prepared with all necessary equipment, walked us through the day's agenda, removed the old unit, and set up the new system. They maintained a clean workspace, with dust and debris kept to a minimum, and hauled away all old equipment at the conclusion of the installation project. The contractor recommended a maintenance plan, including a mandatory cleaning of the ductwork, and deployed a cleaning team to clean and sanitize the ducts in every room, and suggested this process be done every three - four years. The McMurray team installed a programmable thermostat and provided instructions for operating the system. The system responded swiftly to temperature changes, keeping our home consistently pleasant. When the system powered up for the first time, there was a major difference in the atmosphere in our home. The airflow was immediate and fresh, the hot and cold spots were eliminated, and the temperature in our home was cooled in short order. My furnace suddenly quit in the evening in the midst of the prolonged very cold spell. I was unable to locate a technician to figure out what was fixable until I contacted McMurray's, when Ryan came out and noted the motor was shot. This review has been updated after some follow up from the company. Have used McMurrays twice over the past year. The first time was for a HVAC tuneup. The company was a bit more pricey than other companies but they had good reviews so I felt like it was worth it. No problems. The second time was in December 2025. I had a little difficulty with the arrival time (the tech was delayed due to other projects) but when he arrived he performed an inspection and cleaned the flame sensor. The next day I installed a new thermostat and immediately started noticing that the high temp switch was tripping repeatedly. I was a bit bothered that the tech hadn't flagged this for me during the tune up and initially left a negative review here. To the company's credit, Maurice, their customer relations person, followed up with me to learn more about my experience and offered to have a tech follow up and try and identify the issue with a complementary check up. They were able to come out within a couple of days and the tech, Kevin, did a full inspection of several aspects of the system, adjusting the gas pressure to reduce the heat generated by the furnace and calculating the air flow our system was getting while brainstorming some solutions. I don't often go back and edit reviews, but I did so here because I appreciate that the company was willing to go that extra mile to help us address the issue. We had been thinking that we would need to spend thousands of dollars on a new heating system, and McMurray's additional work troubleshooting our problem helped us have confidence that we'll be able to keep using our current furnace for the foreseeable future. DID THEY TRY TO SCAM US? McMurray's people came to clean our air ducts. They supposedly took a photo of the blower blades of our HVAC system which showed them very dirty, and said they absolutely needed to be cleaned - for $350. We declined the work. Later, we had the technician who regularly services our HVAC system check the blades. The photo he took showed the blades pretty clean and not in need of cleaning. WE HAVE SERIOUS DOUBTS WHETHER THE PHOTO MCMURRAY'S PEOPLE SHOWED US WAS REALLY TAKEN AT OUR HOUSE. ------------------------------------ Here is the longer version with details: McMurray's gave us a quote of $375 to clean our air ducts, including 1 drier vent (which was about average for the firms we contacted). When their two-person team from came by this month they had a quick look around and then tried to up-sell their services by a further $1,085 by telling us it would be useless to simply clean the ducts with some additional, urgently needed cleaning: - Motor blower blades - $350 - coil - $385 - disinfecting chemicals - $350 One of the 2 technicians showed us a photo he had supposedly taken of the blower blades of our HVAC system, showing them very dirty and full of dust. We declined the work and paid a $45 fee for their visit. Then we they had another firm come to do the work, including cleaning the coil and applying a disinfecting solution. Their work seemed very satisfactory. Since they don't clean blower blades, we asked another technician, who does regular servicing of our HVAC system, to check them. He took a photo of the blades and showed us: unlike on the photo McMurray's people showed us, they were pretty clean. Instead of pretending to clean them to earn a quick couple of hundred dollars, our honest tech said no cleaning of the blades was needed. The heat went out at my rental property in D.C. and I had to call Mr McMurray on a Saturday before a major snowstorm and holiday weekend. I had just had another company come out and tell me they couldn't fix the issue with the gas boiler. Mr McMurray came out personally along with his tech the next morning (a Sunday) and diagnosed the issue, sending me pictures by text since I am out of state, and walking me through the entire explanation of what had happened to my over 20 year old boiler system. Mr McMurray has an expert eye for repairs and also identified additional issues for me (and sent me pictures) with my hot water heater and with the existing gas fume venting system from my basement. After sending a fair estimate for replacing the boiler and correcting the venting issues, he got the job started that Sunday afternoon even while it began snowing. His team worked all day on Monday (a holiday and still snowing) to install the new system and venting, make sure all radiators and valves were checked and bled (and valves replaced as needed), and to make sure my tenants knew how to use the new thermostat. Mr McMurray sent me regular updates and photos of the work as it progressed. I have been a rental owner for 15 years and it can be incredibly hard to find a reliable company that has this level of expertise and good prices. This is a wonderful company and I highly recommend them. My tenants also commented on how great the team was, how well they communicated updates, and how kind they were in working late to make sure the job was completed accurately for them. read more

Initially I gave them a 4 star rating because of the technician's professionalism and a $25 discount for a recommendation. However, I had some problems with the owner when it came to getting an invoice of the worked that was performed. The owner gave me an incorrect invoice and we had several back and forth text messages regarding him emailing my invoice (he said that he doesn't email invoices to customers.) Our house had a 20+ year old HVAC system which finally started crapping out and short cycling in the middle of winter (of course). We called a different HVAC company which came out, looked at the unit, and told us that our air filter was too thick and caused the problems we were experiencing. After a few days, the short cycling problem came back, and we were stuck with a house that was getting colder and colder. I called McMurrays for a second opinion and the owner, Lynwood, came out the next day. He told me that the air filter was not the problem - Instead, we had a ton of cracks in the heat exchanger in the unit which could've actually started releasing carbon monoxide into our house... Dangerous stuff that the other HVAC company never even noticed or told us about. We decided to get a replacement unit because ours was so old (repairing it just didn't make sense), and McMurrays gave us a fair price for a new mid-level HVAC unit. Lynwood designed a new setup for the unit to maximize the efficiency of airflow to our entire house and ensure our air filter slot was in a more accessible area than the old one. The installers were out to our house within 4 or 5 days after Lynwood ordered the materials, and everything was very painless and easy. Lynwood himself came out the evening after the installation was complete to make sure everything looked good and was running well. I just purchased my 1950 DC home a few months ago. I could tell that the air quality was terrible so I shopped around for duct cleaners. After reading all the positive reviews, I called McMurrays and scheduled an evening appointment. The crew showed up on time and fully prepared to clean and disinfect my ducts. Turns out, I was breathing in mold, dirt, dust etc. I couldn't believe my eyes, so much filth. I needed way more than just a simple duct cleaning! Overall, I'm so happy I called this company. Rather than just replace the parts that had worn out, I asked them to replace the boiler entirely. Mr. McMurray and Mr. Moseley immediately swung into action despite it being the holiday season. While I was and am still unhappy about the problems with the company losing my initial request for a bid several times over more than a week, the owner did reply to my complaints about that on Yelp and did come out and complete an inspection and give my problems a thorough review.
