Review: 09/13/25 Parked in JC Penny's parking lot at Baychester Mall, thought it was the polite thing to do was to make a purchase being that parking was free. A great sale was going on, and I needed to get new bed pillows. The sale was too good of a deal to pass up. Just as i thought i had made the ultimate score. Realized the check out lines were a mile long. The houseware section is on the third floor. The extra, mile long check out line, turned out to be returns. No check outs on the entire third floor. Took the escalator done to the second floor, walked around, no check out lines on the second floor. Getting a bit frustrated, I just want to pay and leave. First floor has to be a charm. As we got off the escalator, there is one check out line, which was long. However they had three cashiers. Met a nice lady, had a cool chat about why we no longer like shopping in stores, and prefer online. This ordeal of having to hunt for a cashier was enough JC Penny to last me a lifetime. I had a very disappointing experience at JCPenney Baychester mall in the Bronx. From the moment I walked in, the level of customer service was extremely poor. Staff members uninterested in helping when I did ask for assistance, I felt dismissed rather than supported. I've shopped at JCPenney before at other locations and expected a much better experience. I like JCPenney, but it looks like a mini tornado has gone thru, not to mention the unflattering planogram and the uneven row widths, the dim lighting and general malaise that comes over you when you enter the store. Most annoying of all, you must launch a search worthy of an Indiana Jones movie for assistance. I've heard corporate is having financial woes, and It's showing. It looks like the corporation gave up. I remember back in the day when JC Penney was largely popular for their 'penn(e)y' sales and buy a full priced item and the second you get for...1¢. Now, you'll still find affordable finds in this Bay Plaza location, others that are still standing and online- though I'm not sure about those penny sales. I'd completely lost the 'return' label for a $62 Glamorize Sports Bra I purchased online and knew it was going to be a pain in the neck to request one. So trekking to Bay Plaza's JC Penney, had to happen. If you're returning an online order, don't just go to the first cashier you see and expect to return your online order (happened to me)- just go to the 3rd floor by Bedding. Thank you to the kind young lady who directed me upstairs! FYI- Overhead 'JCP.com Pick Up' sign is misleading because naturally, that's where people look at. But there's a floor sign that strictly states 'Pick ups and Returns'. The cashier helping me with my transaction was professional and I felt relaxed that she completed my return with so much ease. Was there last weekend. So many things wrong: - Only 1 cashier area per floor and 2 cashiers. Lines took almost 30 minutes to get through. - Barely any sizes available other than 4 or 18. So if you're very skinny or plus size, this is your place. - Price checkers no longer in the store. You are forced to download theirapp to check prices. Many elderly shoppers don't have cell phones; very anti customer service. - Two stars because I like the quality of their clothing. The time wasted here today, either looking for sizes or waiting in lines, was mind boggling. I would only shop here online, though when I did, they were out of stock and canceled by item. We've been here before to take photos. Staff is pleasant and take great photos. Our appointment was for 11am and we 7 people to take photos. After everything was done and we paid, we were leaving at 1230pm. Not too bad. Since we last came the prices have increased dramatically. Making sure to use Groupon 24hrs in advance to bring the prices down in the future. As far as the retail side, it's hard to find someone on the floor when trying to make a purchase. Only visible place with people always behind a counter is the return section. After walking around for 10mins, I decided I was done searching for someone so I can spend My money. Ended up on the return line which was empty at the moment. The older Spanish had an attitude and said, "there is someone out the to take purchases". So I replied, "well I just walked all around and didn't find anyone". Some people just can't handle more than one task and I get that. please train your staff to be more professional and courteous. My time was a complete waste there that place was a ZOO! disgusting and i will never recommend this place to anyone ever. I ordered cards and 3 photos only because we had already spent a long time there waiting for our photos. We were the last ones to leave and was so late we were being rushed out and forced us to pic whatever we could. the studio rooms were all very messy and even the staff looked overworked and frustrated. I was beyond upset and frustrated and clearly showed in the pics we all looked miserable. My son even lost his sneaker and when i called back to try to see if someone saved it i kept getting hung up on and no responses with long hold time. it was a terrible experience over all. read more

The portrait studio is the worst! This place deserves 0 stars! If it was free I wouldn't come back here but for $100-300 for photos that you can take with an iPhone its just ridiculous. The least you can do is built value for the customer by providing good service and ease the pain of feeling like a food for paying so much for so little. No one here gives a shit. Period. A 420pm appointment for pictures took 3 1/2 hrs! The session was only 10mims! The rest of the time was just spent waiting on different people to press buttons. And to put together collages that u might not even want. But "they have to make them anyway!" If that's not frustrating enough we were told the pics could be picked up on Friday by the manager. Which she wrote on out receipt. We go there Friday no pictures. They will be here Monday. Go back Monday. You have to wait about 1 1/2hr to get the pictures. Mind you on Friday the guy took about 45seconds to look in a draw to see if our name is on one of the envelops. Wait an hr n half for what!! I'm going back there today and I will be sure to update my review and tell you how much shit I flipped over in the store. Never go to this place! Buy a disposable from rite aid (if they still have those) and take all the pics you want. read more

I'm giving this place just three's stars. Don't get me wrong I love a good sale at, JC Penny's their good for that. I went in looking for a pair suede like boots that I saw on their website. I spotted them right away looked for my size and found them (so thrilled) it was the last box left that had my size. I opened the box to try them on and there was only one boot in the box. I told the guy who worked there where's the other boot? He went to the the back to look and didn't find anything. I told him to sell me the boot on display, since it was the opposite foot and same size that I needed. I asked him again, he went to the back, and low and behold he came out with a box with a pair of size nine boots. Thank You, George for your help. Great brands, GREAT prices (hello, $15 dresses and $5 sale shirts). The shoe department could stand some improvement, but they are constantly bringing in new designers (lulu guinness, Joe Fresh) that again, this bronx girl does not NEED to get on the train for. But with the sales coupon and so many registers your choice of checkout is very quick if you know which one to go to... They actually do a pretty good job suckering me in there send those save $10 coupons to my house. Crowded, unclean, surly personnel (if you find them). And stay away from their "hair salon". The ladies at the reception are always on the phone or chatting with each other - I waited for 20 minutes in a 2-person line to just ask a question. They are supposed to be a distributor for the OPI nail polish (to buy which I came there) - but they only had leftovers of may be 4 colors - and those bottles they had were clearly old, with the polish separated. I have been to the place twice - gotta give ppl a second chance, right? - and the experience was awful both times. I will never set my foot there again. read more

Nice selection on men's shoes. Restroom is well kept. Customer service seems to be good at the register, but overall there's nobody around on the floor to assist with anything. On the employees.... Still not equal in terms of gender, as the women outnumber the men, but not as bad as other stores. Has a variety of ethnicities which is good. I thought I would get a better deal at Carter's baby clothes & receiving blankets by coming here rather than going to their actual store located outside of the mall. It took me a while to actually locate the baby boy section AND I did not find ANY blankets at all. Plus they had the same sale going on for Carter's as the Carter's store themselves and the place being was a hot mess!! I actually found what I wanted at Kmart! You might want to do a little research before you buy. I noticed that a particular boys dinosaur sleeper that I saw in both Carter's & JCPenney w/ a **TAGGED** MSRP (Manufacturer Sales Retail Price) of $26. That same tag from the manufacturer was on the same dinosaur sleeper, hanging in Macy's for $16. That's w/o coupon, discount and all that, lol. read more

This store's gone downhill VERY fast. One time I ordered something online for in-store pickup at this Bay Plaza store and the item was NEVER AVAILABLE and the order ended up being cancelled over 2 months later. Another time I went to pick up a different order and not only was the line long (about DMV line kind of long, which is REALLY long and really slow), but when I got to the front, the staff dismissed me and said that the item wasn't there WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING at the pickup confirmation email I printed out. I mean, I could deal with surly employees, but I can NOT deal with long lines on top of it, which is what the customer is actually looking to avoid when ordering online. Even the non-pickup lines are very long and slow. They have 3 floors like the Macy's on the other side of the mall but only ONE checkout line PER FLOOR at JCP which means you'll be on a line for AT LEAST 20 minutes, even at noon on a random Wednesday. Macy's has way more checkout lines at their store and you're only in line for 5 minutes at the most over there. The sale prices are nice, but if you're able to take the subway to Manhattan, I highly recommend going to the JCP in the Manhattan Mall instead. Same prices as the Bronx store with only half the lines and much less aggravation. Hopefully JCPenney cleans up their act quick, otherwise the Amazons of the world are going to clean them out of business. read more

This review is specifically about the Photo department .. Deanna (I hope I'm spelling that correctly) was such a sweetheart! We came for Easter pictures of two moody toddlers, 4 years old and 2 years old. My 2 year old was being especially difficult and she was so great with them. By the end of the photos my daughters felt she knew them forever as she personalized the photo shoot for them by calling them by their family nicknames and just personalizing the photo session for them. As difficult as my two year old was being we were able to get some really great shots! It's obvious this job isn't just about the paycheck for her and we loved her! read more

However, they don't let men try on dress shirts which was an issue for my boyfriend whom I was shopping with was in need of dress shirts and was unsure of his size. They make you try sample shirts which don't have all the sizes and fitting available and is very questionable because i'm sure many many strangers tried them previously. Fell in love with this store! I was not much of a JCPenney fan before and honestly because I wasn't giving them much of a chance. My sister-in-law would come here often and I began accompanying her and I would be shocked by some of my finds. They have great prices and deals and now the "dollar/bucks savings" which I believed they are called, if not please correct me. But that is a better bonus and of course BIGGER SAVINGS!! My visit last week I found beautiful sun dresses for $15 and some nice flats to match at 20% off. Goodies, Goodies, Goodies. I also had to make a quick run to Sephora and grabbed some stuff there and since I had done some type of sign up for the 1st time the girls gave me 3 samples which consisted of a primer, blush and a tinted lip gloss.
