Excellent store and well staffed. This Ace Hardware is by far one of the best I have ever been in. We have friends and family make a point to visit this location when they are in town just because of the products offered, easy to shop layout, and wonderful customer service. The Ace Hardware South Loop store had everything we needed and more. We didn't have to make an extra trip to Home Depot or Target, which was really nice. I found hard-to-find cleaning products (the Weiman and Brasso brands) and a range of product sizes (really nice if you don't want to purchase a jumbo size of something). Prices were great too. This store's customer service deserves a thousand stars, in our opinion. The staff knows where everything is and are friendly and knowledgeable on products and fixing/cleaning/painting/repairing things. This location by far stands out in the South Loop as one of the top businesses. Definitely check it out for your home/apartment/condo needs! Special shoutout to Edwardo. He was a BIG help! read more

Just a great store staffed with knowledgeable, smart, and friendly people. I called recently to ask about bird seed and the person answering the phone asked if I would hold so she could check on the status. She returned shortly, thanked me for holding and said, "yes, we do. how can I help you with it? Great customer service, great follow-up and a real desire to help. You are not lost on hold or never have to dial back like w/a big corporation. When I went in to the store to pick them up, I was greeted warmly and welcomed. I stated I was here to pick up the bird seed and the man said yes, I know about them. The bags were put aside and unsurprisingly they were waiting for me. Gordon's is a little more expensive than those big box sites but the value they offer in staffing with experienced people far outweighs the higher cost. They always ask do you have that tool, do you know about that, don't forget about this thing too. They really understand hardware and construction and it's like without them, I would have had to return to a big box retail store multiple times because I don't know what I'm doing. With Gordon's Ace, they provide knowledge as well as products. This has been my experience at any of Gordon's Ace stores and I've been shopping them since June '99. I had tried two sets of AAA batteries into an electronic controller. The batteries were in the original packaging. The controller still did not work. I was not sure how old the batteries were. I explained as much to Reese, who was at the register, and he immediately pulled out a volt meter and measured all eight. That was it. They were all dead soldiers. I purchased a new 4-pack, inserted then in the controller and it came to life! I have always found all the employees at J.C. Licht Ace at 725 S. State St. to be friendly and professional. I don't go there much but when I need a hardware store I choose this one because there's parking on the street, rare for a downtown store.

I went to the store when I came in. I saw three people at the register. I asked when I first came in can someone help me. Well they told me where I can find my item which was a key ring. That's all Iwant it. I thought somebody would've been in the back standing at the post ready to have the customer, but I had to find the things myself, so when I begin to start picking up items such as my key ring that's when both of the other two came in the back, but they were still talking on each other. At the store, there is a black girl there the only one she's so busy talking to her Caucasian coworker sounding so white is not even funny. I'm just standing there to see is the young girl going to help me and she still don't help me. She ran back to him and started talking to him as if he was that damn important , I picked up my items and begin to start going in front of the store. They ran on the walkie-talkie describe everything that I had in my hand as if all alone they just was watching me. They did not want to help me at all. I cannot believe that crap of a store called Ace Hardware is still out here in America. I'd rather go to a go to a big box store instead of go back to Ace Hardware I wouldn't even recommend nobody to go to that particular store at all because all you gonna get is an African-American young girl drooling over Caucasian boy and they both don't want to help you. All they doing is just standing there getting paid just a ridiculous store that needs to really be closed because I don't see how they even get any kind of business there. read more

Horrible service and return policy. Came in 2 weeks ago to purchase a portable humidifier, double checked reciept and with the cashier if we could return, for the confirmation. Come back today, manager is incredible rude and unhelpful. The sign that points to the public makes NO MENTION of humidifiers (seasonal items) being unavailabile to return. He had to go inside his office, grab the employee binder to let me know. Horrible returns, will never come back again. read more

This store is shockingly large on the inside. It looked so small from the outside that I didn't think they would have what I needed. Now, it's not huge like a Home Depot or anything, so don't get me wrong, but they do a very excellent, quality job for basically a loop location. I've been here probably ten times in one and a half years. For little fixer-uppers, repairs, light bulbs, keys, glue, tape, screws, wire, hinges, gardening, tools, whatever I've needed, they've had it. They also sell real (and fake) Christmas trees, as well as other cool things that I've seen but didn't need, such as paint, wood, plumbing...probably most everything you'd need for a downtown apartment. I'd also bet if they don't have it, you could have it ordered or delivered. Not done that, but I bet they could. The place has always been clean and well organized. I've also never been treated rudely either. The staff, even the younger staff, has always been professional, helpful, and courteous. Once the register line was long and the cashier was slow, but that's the worst I have personally ever experienced here. I'm glad they're in the neighborhood. read more

Front counter and roaming help? Great. Key cutting counter help? Jerky. Nary a greeting, smile or "What can I do for you today?" but rather, "How many?" and "Here" when they're done. Helpful Hardware Man my foot. Still, I guess in a world where Home Depots and Lowes have run many an Ace and TrueValue out of service, it's nice to have smaller outfits like Ace still around. For a big city there is a dearth of good hardware stores downtown: sure you could go to Target or Sears but these places are terrible for selection on light bulbs, tools, replacement items etc. Fortunately this place is open decent hours including weekends--and is just a short jog away. They always have exactly what I need and the service is friendly and great. Convenient location, neither dingy or pokey like so many hardware stores in the city, nor overwhelming and suburban like Home Depot. The key that I needed to have made was completed lickety split and the outdoor furniture looked good (with free delivery on offer as well). I've shopped at many of your locations for decades. I've never had a problem - until now. I just stopped in at the South Loop location to buy six keys and one furnace filter. I wanted to use a $7 off of $20 coupon. The keys would have cost $15.54 and the furnace filter was marked as $4.99. I went up front to ring it up and the cashier told me it was $22.63. I said that seemed high, but she said it was right. As I walked out of the store, I noticed that the coupon appeared on the receipt as $0.00. The cashier tried to correct it but couldn't. She called a manager over (a woman with long black braided hair - I didn't get her name). The manager said that the furnace filters were on sale, so the coupon couldn't be used. I said that they were marked regular price. She said that "they were probably buy two, get one free, or something like that." I asked her what the sale was, and she appeared to get annoyed and stated "buy two get one free". (Notice, the first time she used "probably" and "something like that".) To which I said to the cashier, I'll go back and get two more. When those were rung up, there wasn't a discount applied. The manager then went to the back of the store and said to the cashier over the walkie talkie that they weren't on sale. At that point I left the merchandise on the counter and left. I felt that the manager was extremely rude. Either the product is regular price - like it was marked on the shelf - and I should have gotten the $7.00 off, or it's on sale and I should have received one free air filter. I would have been fine with either outcome - instead, the store is out inventory (six keys that will need to be thrown away), has lost a sale, and has lost me as a customer for quite a while. (I'll probably go back to the store at some point, but I can guarantee that it won't be for a while.) They might want to train their staff on basic customer service, and their manager on basic manners/courtesy. I'm on my way to run a few errands now, including a stop at Home Depot to get some key and furnace filters. read more

It is a great pleasure every time I step in the door as someone is always greeting and asking how they can assist me, walking and guiding me to the right aisle/location. Avoid clusterf'ks of people milling around Home Depot, and swing into a store where the staff actually knows what they're talking about, where things in the store are located, and if they don't have it, where nearby to look. I had a basic errand, parked upstairs as I usually do, got bad advice, left empty handed, and when I asked about validation (you used to be able to park upstairs), I got a laugh and a smile and a "no, we don't do that anymore." I was looking for ONE nail to screw my bathroom towel rack back in place. I had no idea what type of nail I was looking for but one of the sales people took a look at the nail I had brought and provided a few suggestions. He recommended I go with the easiest solution and even allowed me to take home one of the nails he thought would fix the problem. Exceptional Customer Service!!! My vacuum has been on the fritz all summer. Now my dog is shedding and I desperately need a good vacuum. My plan was to go purchase a new one next week. However a fellow dog lover friend urged me to take my Hoover apart and fix it. I'm not really the handy type of girl, but if I really have to, i can fix stuff, i guess:-/ Anyway i take the vacuum apart and discover the belt is broken. Yayyyy easy fix. So I call Ace with the belt number. The young lady was soooooo helpful. She looked up the belt number and informed me that they only had one left. She then told me she would put it to the side for me. I walked over during my lunch and she had the belt waiting for me at the register. I haven't experienced this kind of customer service in a LONG time. This was really a great experience. I will definitely make this my new stop for parts and pieces. read more

Wow--- we usually go to home depot for everything, but ace may have won us over. Angela was wonderful- very knowledgable and soo friendly. I called them. About 5 times last night when we were grill shopping-- yes I was that annoying customer-- and she never complained and did what she could to help us. At the end we ended up leaving home depot even tho the price was the same. She won us over! They have parking in the lot connected to the building and the assemble and deliver your grills for free! This Ace has what many of the bigger stores seem to lack - easily accessible and helpful staff. I have gone to this place more times than I can count and have always received prompt, courteous service. I once purchased large pieces of plexiglass there and one of the staff members helped me walk all the way home with it in the snow. That's what I call service! Their prices are a wee bit higher and the selection is more limited, given their small footprint, but overall this is a great place for basic home repair needs. read more

I visit a hardware store about as often as I do an ostrich ranch or a Zoroastrian temple, but, being in need of a few small home maintenance and repair items (the names of some of which I didn't even know), I found myself in the unfamiliar precincts of the South Loop Ace. It turned out to be a pretty good experience: everything clean and well-organized, and the two staff members I dealt with were patient in dealing with the scantily-clued (that'd be me). The management and staff at this South Loop Gordon's Ace Hardware do an excellent job at supplying their customer with excellent and friendly service. I have been impressed several times with their attention to the customer. Most recently, the paint department was very helpful as I tried to find a specific color. The color is always expertly mixed and paint choices clearly explained for the best coverage per project. Much better than a big box store!! read more

I love this store. This is my go-to place to pick up stuff for my weekend warrior projects around my condo. It's right down the street from my building and the staff is always friendly and helpful. Although their prices are a little higher compared to the Depot, they often have good discount coupons and specials. Besides it's always good to support local business. They also offer free local delivery when you spend over a certain $ amount; a great service that is reminiscent of mom & pop stores of the past. Being that its a smaller store, they don't carry a lot of items in stock. However I love how convenient it is, right in my neighborhood. read more

Ace is the place....an appropriate slogan indeed. I spent weeks trying to find the right size and style furniture for my deck. All the big box stores (won't mention their names) charged for delivery in most cases and in all cases, they didn't set-up. A real problem. i picked up a brochure from Ace Hardware at 725 South State Street in Chicago, from their manager, Venice. Ace had a wonderful selection of outdoor furniture, in all price ranges and excellent quality. I returned to Ace and spoke with Venice about placing my order. she was knowledgeable, professional, helpful and caring. with Venice's assistance, I ordered beautiful furniture for our deck. The perfect style and size. But wait there's more. Ace did not charge for delivery or set-up. that's right, they set-up the furniture. We reside in a townhouse, and when the furniture was delivered, Larry, the senior driver and his assistant (I think his name is Brandon), did not view this as a problem, nor were there any complaints about carrying the furniture to the second floor. Larry is truly an artist. the halls and doors are rather narrow, but he knew exactly how to maneuver the furniture without nicking the furniture, walls or doors. Also, both were professional, polite and neatly dressed. The furniture was to be delivered between 10am and 12pm. At 11:55 am, my phone rang and i thought "on, no." It was Venice, informing me the drivers would be their within 10 minutes. how's that for customer service? Kudos to Venice, Larry and the South Loop Hardware. This Ace is much more than just a hardware store. My friend recently moved into a new apartment, and we needed all kinds of random items, including cleaning supplies, which we were able to find at Ace. We also found various colors of liners for the kitchen cabinets and drawers. It was amazing. I will warn you that it's not cheap, but the higher prices are worth the convenience. Oh and it's also a great place to pick up a replacement lock if you work out at the X-Sport up the street and have forgotten yours at home :) read more

New to the neighborhood, closest hardware store. Stopped in to get some keys made. Younger guy working in the back asked if I could wait a few minutes. He was helping an older women with some troublesome wheels on her grocery cart. Screwdriver .. box cutter, a few pieces, two minutes. Done. Good as new. Lady asked "how much"? Answer: "don't worry about it". Nicely done! He then comes over and cuts two keys for me, which worked perfectly when I got home. Good work, all around! read more
