Everything was great until after we signed the contract. At that point, we were handed off to a…read moreproject manager and the experience changed completely. We felt dropped like a hot potato. Communication became poor, follow-through was lacking, and I did not feel that our project was being given the attention it had received before we signed. I ended up spending a significant amount of my own time handling product selections, procurement planning, logistics, and project coordination. I also had concerns about the deposit terms at the beginning of the project. The company initially attempted to collect a larger deposit than I understood California law to allow for a home improvement contract, and I had to push back before the amount was corrected. One of the biggest concerns for me was the permitting process. I contacted both the city and my HOA to verify the status and was told that the required permits/approvals had not been requested at that time. After I raised the discrepancy and did not receive a response, the company proceeded with permit-related activity after I had already communicated that we were cancelling the project. When we ultimately decided not to proceed with the remodel, I notified the company that we wanted to cancel the project. Despite that notice, the company subsequently filed for permits for the project after I had already told them we were cancelling. On 9/3, I spoke with their representative and was told that my $1,000 deposit would be refunded and that we would mutually terminate the contract. After that conversation, they stopped responding. I followed up repeatedly and did not receive a substantive response until 9/10, after I made clear that I would escalate the matter if I continued to receive no response. On 9/10, the company reversed its position and told me that the $1,000 deposit would not be refunded because of work they claimed had already been performed. Their representative then acknowledged in writing that what she was telling me was different from what she had told me during our phone call. I have attached that message to this review so readers can see the company's response directly. The company is now claiming that the entire $1,000 will be retained for work performed. I have requested an itemized accounting and supporting documentation showing exactly what work was performed and the costs they claim justify retaining the full deposit. I strongly dispute their characterization of the amount of work performed, particularly given how much of the product selection, procurement planning, logistics, and project coordination I handled myself. I am continuing to pursue resolution of this dispute. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend that anyone considering this company document everything, verify the deposit terms, and get every representation regarding payments, cancellation, and refunds in writing before signing. California generally limits home-improvement down payments to $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less, subject to limited exceptions. I would also recommend ensuring that subsequent payments correspond to work actually completed or materials delivered. To date, they have not provided me with an itemized accounting showing what work they contend was completed and the value assigned to that work. Much of the communication and project coordination during this period was initiated by me.

Some highlights I'd call out are they have great subcontractors and technicians. The tiling, paint job, electrical... everything was fantastic, and everyone was super easy to work with. We've always had communications / language barriers when working with workers in the past, so it was nice to be able to answer questions or give feedback directly onsite without having to wait for Umid to jump in. I also found Cotfort trustworthy and reasonable. For one, I decided to try an online-only tile company which led to terrible delays to the project (my fault there), and they were patient with reschedules though I know it caused them headaches. They also stepped in to make things right, without hesitation, when their countertop fabricator accidentally installed the wrong floor curb on the shower. Another sign of trustworthiness: I asked them to come back after the work was done to change out one of the accessories in the bathroom... they really had no obligation to but they did anyway. There were definitely some hiccups, like in all projects, but it helped a lot that they were responsive, flexible, and communicative. I never felt like they were trying to nickel and dime us or recommend something outside of our interests.

Any areas of concern were quickly addressed with out question. They were also accepting of our last minute changes, specifically adding in some extra canned lights, re-doing the floor of the entire house, and additional painting asks. Communication with the team was easy through a WhatsApp group that would have the relevant team members, Roy, engineers, builders, etc. The value was priced with in our expectations, it seemed to align with other bids. Their team has the architect who started with the floor plan with us, with a lot of back and forth discussions and our inputs taken into considerations. After we agreed and finalized the plan, they submitted it to the city for the permit. Since the architects and the construction team are under the same leadership of NuHome, in our case, Tony, this saves a lot of later potential integration problems between the architectural plans and the executions of the construction. During the construction, there were a few times that we changed our plans, for example, changing the size of the closet and pantry, Tony and the team were accommodating it; and in the middle of the construction, we were also changing the type and the number of outlets and the spot lights, Tony and the team were also incorporated that as well. We also had changed the plan for the TV ascent wall, and the team were fully in corporation and working with for the change, which turned out to be beautiful. Another area that really pleased and benefit us was NuHome has excellent interior designer who had worked with us closely in designing the bathrooms, and helping us picking up the right materials that worked perfectly for us, this saved us so much potential headache as we pretty much knew nothing in this field.
