My son and I had the smoked chicken sandwich, my daughter-in-law ordered the Bahn Mi and my husband ordered pastrami. Of course we all had to share and taste everything. All in all, everything was very tasty, including the fries cooked in beef tallow. The drinks were great and the wait staff beyond friendly and helpful. Thank you, Crooked Ewe!

We were visiting South Bend for a Notre Dame home game, and as you can imagine, finding a place to…read moreeat for a group of 8 after the game can be a struggle! We called Crooked Ewe, and they were kind enough to hold a table for us. As it turned out, the patio was perfect for a larger group on a Saturday evening. The atmosphere is laid-back and easygoing. Inside has that cozy, small-brewery feel, while the patio gives you a gorgeous view of the river. Our service was great - friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Overall, we really enjoyed the food, although I thought some of the Asian-inspired dishes could use a little refinement. I ordered the bibimbap bowl with fried cauliflower, cucumbers and onions, shredded carrots and daikon, and kimchi fried rice. The cauliflower was easily the star here! Though the fried rice and other accompaniments could use a bit more flavor and texture. That said, the BBQ was A+. I added a side of brisket, and it was probably some of the best brisket I've ever had. It's a thicker cut and melts in your mouth. My husband and FIL also raved about the wings. One thing to note for families: there isn't a kids menu, but my son was perfectly happy with a cheeseburger and fries. All in all, Crooked Ewe was a great find for our group. We'd definitely come back, especially for those wings and brisket!

August 13, 2026 So glad my wife and I chose this local place…read moreto eat dinner in South Bend. It was very good food prepared fresh. The server was personable and very helpful. We got there around 5:00 PM while things were just getting busy. It had a nice vibe to it. You could tell people enjoy coming here. I started off the order with an item off their monthly menu specials. The muffuletta pizza. Very nice with a great flavor. My wife loved every bite of her braised beef sliders and cole slaw. We also have this obsession with ordering Brussels sprouts when we go out and they're available. I will give the sprouts 3 out of 5 because they had way too much balsamic vinegar on them. This rating doesn't bring my overall rating down because it's likely they are very good any other time. As if all that weren't enough to eat, we ordered the 8" Cinnamon Streusel pizza with vanilla bean ice cream off their seasonal monthly menu. Oh boy was that good!! If given the opportunity to come back to South Bend, this will be my go to place. PS... I'm not a beer drinker, but it seems they have lots of craft beer on tap. It's considered a gastropub. There's plenty of seating inside and outside. Some outside seating is covered and nice of it raining but still warm out. There is a patio area that's quite large. It looks like and has a feel of a biergarten.

I had not been back to The Lauber in a while when visiting South Bend, so I went twice this time!…read moreOn Friday, my friend and I stopped in for a happy hour drink as I remember they made a fantastic Expresso Martini, complete with three coffee beans floating on top! It was just as good as the last time I was here. On Saturday, I ordered takeout for us since I was staying in the downtown area. I ordered the Power Salad (full order to share), and it was a nice mixture of arugula, spinach, quinoa, dried blueberries, toasted almonds, goat cheese, grape tomatoes and red onion, with green goddess dressing on the side. It was a plentiful salad and very tasty. I would definitely order this salad again! For dinner, I had the Rigatoni Chicken Pasta, which was advertised as their house specialty. The rigatoni noodles were accompanied with seasoned chicken and a nicely spiced mushroom cream sauce, which was divine. I wish there was more chicken (at least in my dish) as it was minimal at best. My friend ordered the Tropic Burger, medium well, with beer battered fries. The burger was topped with pulled pork and bacon with a tasty jalapeno sauce she just loved. The burger was so big she even had half of it for the next day. Overall, another great experience at The Lauber. Looking forward to my next visit when I get to South Bend.

My boyfriend and I came here for Sunday brunch in early May 2025 for a romantic date while I was visiting South Bend. Our service was spectacular and our brunch was delicious and expertly made. I did notice that there weren't a lot of people also dining there, just a dozen or so other patrons during our time there. It wasn't the best brunch food I have ever had, but the potatoes were fabulous! My omelet was pretty good too, but I am an omelet fanatic. The side of fruit my bf and I each got were fresh and generous as well. My bf got the quiche and was pleased with the portion and taste. I hope the staff are able to find employment somewhere else soon and that the talented chefs continue to make good food at another place. RIP Tippecanoe Place Restaurant!!

Fast forward 50 (okay, maybe more like 60"ish") years, I returned. My out-of-town family members and I made an effort to visit this restaurant for lunch. The site is beautiful and has a lot of South Bend history described in the pictures on the walls. You are welcome to walk through the three stories to see the fantastic architecture. We ordered chicken sandwiches, chicken salads and I had an excellent chicken marsala. Why not five stars? The chicken on the salads and the sandwiches were overcooked and very dry. The chef overlooked the chicken on one salad but, once it arrived, again, it was overcooked. The service was good for as busy as she was, but the restaurant was definitely understaffed. The prices were a little high, but I think this is the new normal. All things considered, I would return just for the chicken marsala, it was that good.
