One of the things I remember most from my childhood in Three Rivers was the special times we would go to see a movie at the Riviera Theater. The closest movie complex was over 30 minutes away so we would wait every week to see what one movie the Riviera Theater would pick for that week! After being open since1925, the Riviera closed down in 2000 after an actual movie complex came into town. However it was renovated and re-opened by a local family in 2008. The Riviera's renovations did not change the unique and beautiful architecture in the building, but updated the technology and added a bar and concession area. The Riviera now shows current independent movies, classics, and operas/ballets. One of my mother's favorite times is Christmas. The Riviera shows all the classic Christmas movies on the big screen. When home, I was able to see White Christmas on the big screen with my family. White Christmas has been a staple movie in our household since I was a child and being able to see it on the big screen was great for me. In addition to being a really unique experience, you cannot beat small-town prices. The biggest popcorn they have is only $3, biggest soda is $2.50, and they have a full bar. I must admit my favorite piece is that they still make old fashioned sodas, including the Green River, which was my favorite when little. If close to Three Rivers the Riviera really is a unique experience that you should get to.

Looks like 1925 all over again

I knew it was not in your average place when I noticed the disco Cow Skull over the line dancing teacher saying how good her students were doing because they had "the steps and the claps down". We came for dinner and stayed for the great music, Steve Armstrong and the 25 cent beer band were fantastic. Most bands are either fun or musicians, they are both. Everyone by now knows I have a food allergy, and gauge a waitress on her willingness to help me not get sick. Tonja ran in the back, found out what I could eat, and was back with my husband's pitcher of beer in a minute. She was laid back, friendly, helpful, and above all quick. There is nothing worse than the disappearing waitress, now you see her, 20 minutes later now you STILL don't. We ordered the combination platter that they say feeds 6-7. I guess cowboys must eat a WHOLE lot more than us mere mortals. The food arrived in the arms of a burly cowboy because it was an entire sheet tray. Not just the half tray you bake cookies in the on, think twice that size. We had an entire slab of ribs, a 6x9 hunk of brisket, 2 chicken breasts, what looked like a half of an entire turkey breast, enough pulled pork for 4 sandwiches, an entire frier full of french fries, a soup bowl of baked bend, another of coleslaw, and what looked like half a sheet tray of corn bread. The taste was amazing. Due to the low and slow but not smoked method of cooking everything was juicy and seasoned just right. How many places can make a brisket have enough flavor to taste like an expensive steak. The BBQ sauces were straight forward and old fashion. Just what great food needs just a hint to complement, not something fancy and pretentious to drown bad food in. The price was remarkably reasonable coinciding we were stuffed to our gills and took home 3 large carry out containers. I'm now working on a girls weekend just to have a field trip to Cowboy Up!

Here's what I felt missed the bar... First, a speakeasy's initial location of "secrecy"... I don't think the top floor of Monaco Bay is that difficult to find. In fact, there is a giant "Gatsby" sign lit up outside. Even if it is modern, perhaps an unmarked door at the entrance could enhance the overall feel. Second, the expectation of innovative cocktails that take you back to an era. The specials were the same as Monaco and the bartender didn't know what the night's special actually was... There's a lot of potential here to boast old custom cocktails from scratch- with a modern twist. Third, the atmosphere. The exposed brick, dark woods, and lavish style add to the tone. Would be really great if there were candles on tables instead of incredibly bright lights drilled into the floor. I did enjoy the unique lights hanging above the bar though. The decor played into vintage modern, but it's lacking some authenticity. Also, the DJ seemed to just play popular culture. Would have loved to hear some swing or jazz remixes instead.

Went on a busy Friday night, and even though the parking lot and tables were full, they seated us quickly. We skipped the appetizers and ordered entrees and drinks. I had the grouper special and my hubby had the fried chicken. The grouper didn't come with any tartar sauce, but it needed a little extra sauce, still very good. Service was very good. Always a favorite spot and a sure thing for a good quality meal…read more Not sure if they have a new cook, if they're cheapening their ingredients or if their supplier is cheapening things. Meal was good but we're accustomed to greatness from this restaurant. New Orleans cavatappi pasta has always pushed the limits on spicy but today it fell short. Le sigh Generous portion of walleye as usual but the sauce just came up flat. Added table salt which helps but adds a layer of unrefined flavor teasing the mind and leaving us to wonder why do we have to salt our food today? Sweet potato comes with cinnamon brown sugar butter didn't let the server tell you it's just brown sugar butter. Featured soup was Hungarian mushroom. Not sure what makes it Hungarian and the server didn't know either. ‍ We liked our meal but we didn't LOVE it like we usually do. Perhaps it was just an off day. We'll try again. Please don't let this restaurant slide down past return. It's one of the few we know we can get a high quality meal out of.
