Oh Jazz Cafe. Where else can you show up and be treated like family in all of the best and worst kind of ways? Every time I have gone, I have waited endlessly for my food, been engaged in both intellectual and insulting ways, ended up staying a few hours longer than I had planned, and left feeling stuffed. And every time, I can't wait to come back. Jazz Cafe is mostly Greek food but serves up some other interesting dishes as well, like a mexican breakfast and pizzas. The coffee comes slowly but generously in Styrofoam cups, and be prepared to wait on your order. The staff is friendly, but don't you dare show up when they are closing on the weekends. The greek food is amazing. I have had a bunch of their sandwiches and salads and am always pleased with my order. They also serve up gigantic bottles of champagne when you order mimosas on the weekends. I have never ordered one myself, but every time I go in, I end up sharing with another table. Another table, you ask? Well, that's a perfect illustration of how Jazz Cafe works. Weekend brunch here is like a party. There is a jazz band in the corner playing on and off the whole morning. The bar is covered in family photos and the art on the walls doesn't make any cohesive sense. The patio looks like a place you could sit down and eat, or buy antique furniture...or dig up ancient ruins.There are rowdy tables of families who all seem to know each other, the owner, and the jazz band. Mimosas have been passed around on more than one occasion, and the owner often comes by the table to chat. My boyfriend got up and played trumpet with the band and then disappeared with the owner in the kitchen for about 30 minutes while I chatted with people from the next table. It is like the chaotic, fun, loud greek family you never had. Or maybe you do have, but you don't have to travel to see them. I know it may not be for everyone, but I love it. read more

I was suuuuper excited to come here. After reading the reviews we expected to have crappy service but not THAT crappy. We love us some jazz so brunch and jazz seemed like a win-win. We got there a little before 12 and walked in and NO ONE helped us. We could only see two people who looked like they were working in the entire restaurant. We didn't know if it was open seating or if we should wait. After standing around for a bit and having a waitress stare me in the face and ignore me, we decided to just sit down. After being looked at and ignored a few more times I decided to go up to the waitress to get a menu. I only saw lunch menus out. I asked about breakfast and she says "We stopped serving breakfast at 12pm." It was 12:01pm. Sigh. I grabbed a lunch menu and we looked it over. They had salads and sandwiches and the regular Greek foods (gyros and baba ganoush) but I was in the mood for brunch and at this point getting a little hangry (anger out of hunger). We left. Great food but very pricey for the amounts. A Large Greek salad with the side of gyro was $13. I would call the salad only medium sized and the amount of meat was meager at best. A side of taziki was only medium sized but charged at the large price. Add a soft drink and tea with tax and you're just pennies shy of $40. Plus the service was lacking (never offered a ice tea refill). So we came to jazz cafe knowing it was a divey place. As we walked through the patio it definitely had a garage sale feel. We venture in to find a hodgepodge Decour meets Garage band. The very nice gentlemen gave us the menu. My boyfriend and I were both in shock of the high food prices!! We started with the "sample" of hummus, for $4 you get a tiny dollop of hummus and one whole wheat pita. The hummus was great and the olive oil set it way above the store kind. Jazz cafe is a Fort Worth institution. I am so glad that they have remained EXACTLY the same and haven't sold a inch of land to the monster church rapidly expanding on the corner. Stay strong guys :) This place is the same as the first time I came over 10 years ago. The tables are small and the booths are cozy. Saturday and Sunday there is live jazz. The eggs florentine are my favorite in the city. The hollandaise is nice and lemony. The coffee is strong and they refill endlessly. I've had other things for lunch, but I really love the florentine. That's what draws me here on Sundays. I have never had a problem with service. If you come when the place is packed out the door, be rational and expect to wait. HA! I've been when it's slow and the service was on point. I can barely drink half my coffee before they refill it. Eggs hit the table in a flash. Make sure you bring cash because that's all they take! Ok I must admit, I was nervous to try this place based on the looks. But I am so glad to did! The sampler platter was a great start to the meal and helped tide over my hunger until lunch came. One thing is that the inside could use a fresh coat of paint and the bathroom door frame needs to be refinished. I'd like to start first by listing some things that are eclectic about the Cafe, some might consider them negatives, but I think they add a "small business charm" to the place. 1. Jazz Cafe only accepts cash* (and there aren't any ATMs nearby) so plan ahead! 2. The Jazz Cafe is open seven days a week and is open until 3pm all days but Sunday (2pm). The neon "open" sign is habitually unlit, so don't let that deter you. 3. The Cafe is a hole in the wall, not great if you're a clean freak, but charming if you like the uniqueness of a (very) small business. Food: Greek food. Great food choices. I had to narrow down 5 options to decide what I wanted. I got a Gyro and it was fantastic. The lamb was seasoned perfectly and the Tzatziki sauce was amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant. Great food, good prices, nice environment. This is the sort of place where famous authors would have coffee every morning while they write their masterpiece. Get some cash and check it out. We came here for lunch on Sunday. It's a quaint little place that looks run down from the outside and you wouldn't necessarily expect it to be a restaurant since it's in a house. The food was good but a bit pricey for the portion sizes. I got a gyro which was good but came with bagged potato chips for the side. The girlfriend ordered the small Greek salad with gyro meet. The portion was good for her but it was an extra $4 for the gyro meat that couldn't have been more than 4 oz. We ordered a sampler size of hummus to share and it wasn't really enough. The upside to the hummus though was that it was very good. They've got a little performance/recording area that they have live music playing from, they just don't post when and who. read more

My dad introduced me to this hole in the wall Mediterranean restaurant- and I am so glad he did! This is the only place I have found in all of Texas that serves taramasalata- which I fell in love with while traveling in Greece. I will warn you- it's salty, but that's the way I like it, served with warm pita bread. Add a healthy sized Greek salad and I have a huge lunch for a reasonable price. Loads of other options including the ever popular gyros, falafels, and yummy hummus. Make sure to bring cash, they don't accept credit cards. If you want to imbibe, bring your own. Pretty sure there is no corkage fee. And they have live music (Jazz of course!) at night. You may not have the best service, but you will get served some authentically wonderful food. read more

I am from two hours south of Ft Worth and while helping a sick friend see her doctor here she treated me with lunch at Jazz's (twice!) This place is very quaint and quirky, but the sandwiches are great. One time I got a tenderloin with avocado on a homemade bun; today I got a delicious hamburger made from lean sirloin. My friend had lamb and a salad both times; we really enjoyed our lunches. I also enjoyed my iced tea and made a comment that some restaurants just can't make decent iced tea, which is a pity. The service, while slow, evokes times past when people enjoyed their meals rather than wolfed down a lunch in 30 minutes. This is the opposite of fast food. Here they really know how to prepare and serve real food. I also noted they had some interesting vegetarian choices; I would like to bring my daughter here if she weren't living in Cali! What a great place to ruin a beautiful Sunday! We walked in with promises of grape leaves and delicious greek food al fresco and walked out horribly disappointed. We were completely ignored for twenty minutes after we walked in then finally given the dirtiest most incomplete menu I have ever seen. There was no sign of grape leaves or any Mediterranean cuisine.After waiting an hour...yes an hour for our food! we got a Knock off of hummus drowned in cheap olive oil..(incomparable to the one at central market) and still frozen in the inside pita bread. Waiting staff was rude...and useless. sandwiches that we ordered were disgusting and not on the original bun that was on the menu but on stale pita bread that broke when I picked it up .Excuse me.... I just gagged thinking of the soggy tabuleh with two inch long stems. The only thing good about this place was the crushed ice that melted 10 minutes into our hour and a half wait and the jazz music that could be heard above my growling tummy. To top of my quality dining experience this dirty fly infested place did not accept credit or debit and no sign was posted. Jazz Cafe is one of the best kept secrets in town. I've been going here for lunch for at least fifteen years and am never disappointed. I recommend the Greek salad (ask for pita bread and make a pita sandwich by stuffing the pita with salad), the Green Gobbler and definitely the black bean soup. They make their bread in house so all the sandwiches are great. Don't go expecting a quick meal though. This is a family run with a small kitchen. You may think I didn't like Jazz Cafe..... As I approached the restaurant it appeared to me as if they weren't open. As in, no longer in business. The sign in front was broken out and the neon "OPEN" sign facing the street was not on. It appeared dark inside. I turned down the side street with the intention of turning around but found the parking lot to be full meaning there were 8 cars. Open maybe? Also, I found another neon sign operating with the colorful and welcoming "OPEN" on display. From the parking lot one approaches onto the patio. A somewhat charming and inviting area, or it could be given the odd assortment of industrial equipment, vacum cleaners, hardware and tools scattered about. An area on the west end of the patio looked like it could be a great stage for a jazz combo on some pleasant evening but on my visit was doubling as a storage area of sorts. I stumbled around trying to find a door and a mysteriously hidden voice called out to me "Can I help you?" I replied "I can't see you" (The reader should know I'm hearing impaired and can't discern the direction of sound) After spinning in circles, I finally located the source of the voice partially hidden behind a wall and the assortment of equipment mentioned above. I was directed to the front door. I then proceeded to the Montgomery street side of the building but another voice pointed out my continued misdirection and extended his arm and finger toward the REAL front door. "Front" being a misnomer since it is on the SIDE of the building. Finally becoming oriented to enter the building, no one on the inside greeted me. I scanned the dining room and some quick math deduced that there were more cars in the parking lot than patrons but I let go of the mystery. Since I'm a big fan of patio seating and the aforementioned patio did not look as though they were serving out there, I picked a table next to a window overlooking the patio, the next best thing I suppose. I sat, sat and sat. Please note all other reviews of Jazz Cafe that I read indicate the service is less than desirable. Duly noted. Eventually, a fair natured fellow with a long gray pony tail appeared and dropped 2 menus on my table. 1 for lunch and 1 for breakfast. I looked at neither. I think you can still find an article from the Star Telegram titled "Eat this and die happy" A list of about 45 things in the metroplex on one should put on their gastronomic bucket list. This is a great list. On the list is the SOB Eggs at Jazz Cafe. I hope I don't need a bucket list anytime soon but I did order the SOB Eggs. Being a sneaky type and liking to order off the menu when I can, I also ordered Greek coffee like I knew what I was doing. I suppose it's also good to note that Jazz Cafe is a Greek restaurant when not doubling as a brunch locale or a storage facility. Again, I waited. Soon an attractive and curvaceous dark haired beauty with an attitude pitched an espresso sized cup on my table and without a word walked away. Pony tail man appeared with water and told me my coffee would be "just a minute". Good thing I brought a book. The arrival of my eggs coincided with the opening of chapter 2. Again, I was told my coffee would be "just a minute". The food: There are no eggs and black beans on the planet worth $10 unless they're served with sliced truffles & beluga caviar. SOB eggs are chiliquiles. Wait.... my coffee just arrived. The eggs are served covering half the plate with runny black beans covering the other half and some pretty good pico de gallo wedged in. Since theres no room left, 3 tortillas are folded and placed on top. It was good, end food review. For those of you who don't know.... forget Starbucks for espresso. Find a greek or turkish or some mediterranean place of your liking and get your mainline caffeine fix there. They boil coffee, that's right, boil coffee in a small open pot then add sugar because no one can drink sludge unless it's sweet. The grounds and everything are left in the pot which is brought to your table. Thats why Ms. Hot Smarmy pitched me the tiny cup. You pour until its too gritty for you then stop. For me this equated to about 3 tiny cups. All good things must come to an and the closer the time came to leave, the better the service was. Odd, since not once did I think they wanted me to stay. Mr. Pony Tail now wanted to refill my water, get me more coffee, serve me another entree and clean off the patio so I could sit outside. OK, just kidding about everything except the water. So I went to pay. At the register he offered a can of coffee for purchase. I said before I could buy coffee I needed one of those nifty boiler pot thingys. At this time another gentleman with nicely coiffed hair and smart looking clothes who had been on his cell phone all morning interjected. (I think he was the owner) He told me about Halal market in Arlington where I could purchase said cookware. He told me what a fantastic place it was. But thats another review. read more

Just had lunch there after I read a good review. The parking is difficult. Hard to figure out where the front door is. Dirty courtyard looks like a flea market. Service was incredibly slow. No refills on our drinks (party of 4). Ordered Giro sandwiches which were just a sparse few pieces on greasy grilled pita....over a bed of Ruffles potato chips. The hummus and Tabouli was watery. No one ever came back to give us our check, so we went to front to pay. Of course they don't accept credit cars either. There is no sign stating this. We had to scrape together our money to pay the $49.80 bill for four sandwiches. Horrible experience....one of my worst in Fort Worth. read more

You'll never get your drink refilled unless you walk up to the counter and wait for him to get done with whatever he's doing. Bottom line: the food was not good enough to compensate for the bad service and extremely long wait. I lived three blocks away and wanted to walk in this place and love it.Sadly, I stood at the counter for a while before being noticed and helped. The environment inside needs a lot of help. It's not very inviting so I chose to walk home. I thought my food would be pretty good because sometimes when places don't look good on the outside or inside the food is awesome because the place spends time on the food and not the atmosphere. Sadly, though, the food was not that great. Over the last year as I drove by it I did notice that they have been making improvements to the outside area. I really love the food here. Sometimes, I love the ambiance. The rest of the time ... there' s enough ambiance to slowly drown in. I used to be a fairly regular lunch visitor, but lately .... Normally, I love a laid-back setting where there's no hustle and bustle, but my wife and I have stopped coming. The reason? Lunch one weekday afternoon. There are all of 4 people in the restaurant - my wife and I, and another couple who'd just gotten their food. Cool - laid back. After a few minutes, the cook - not the waitress, who's been wandering about somewhere - comes out to get our iced tea orders, and then ten minutes later, our food orders. That's fine - who's house is on fire, anyway? Thirty minutes after *that*, we've seen no sign of food, waitress, cook, bottle washer, aliens, EMTs, etc. Nobody to nod at, nobody to flag down through the pass-through to the kitchen. Halfway through the day, they just stopped caring, evidently. "Eh. Customers. This is an interesting book." Something like that. We left. It's two sandwiches, not a cure for cancer. Doesn't take that much time and effort. They could've said "Hey, here are your sandwiches, and the keys - lock up when you're done. We're going to the lake." I'd have been cool with that. Nothing. We walked out, and haven't walked back in after a year. Eh - why bother if they don't? Maybe our sandwiches showed up later in the day. Maybe they're still sitting at our table, or still waiting at the pass-through. Who knows? I love gyros, hummus, etc. - but I can get them elsewhere, and often on the same day I enter the restaurant. read more

The decor is eclectic -- the collection of musical instruments is like you're in their recording studio, and the patio feels like you're at someone's house. I have been going here for 30 years and I have known the owner (nick) for just as long. He has the best gyro I have ever had and his black beans are to die for. It's a very laid back and casual atmosphere. You will see Nick in the kitchen cooking and you will also see him come out and play one of many instruments with the band while you eat. Weirdly enough, this place managed to be in a travel guide for the Dalls-Fort Worth area. The food was mediocre. I got a sandwich of some sort, which was overloaded with meat and had very few vegetables. My friend was also not wow-ed by her food. Maybe their breakfast/brunch menu is significantly better than their lunch menu? Finally, the service was lackluster. While our server appeared friendly on the surface, she actually seemed mad when I requested a new water because mine had a hair in it. No apologies were ever given. Since moving in down the street in September I've been incredibly excited to try Jazz Cafe. Finally my boyfriend and I made it down there this morning for one of the worst dining experiences of my life. Parking was tough, it was confusing to find the entrance, and once we got inside we had no idea where to go or what to do. We had to go seek out the waiter who snapped at us and told us to "just sit down somewhere". We waited for about 15 minutes for any further acknowledgement/to receive our menus, but noticed it was busy and there was only one server so we didn't take offense. The items on the menu were extravagantly expensive ($11 for a half order of eggs benedict with hash browns), and when the waiter came back to take our order, I asked if I could sub the hash browns for a single pancake. He curtly replied "no.", and when I tried to make the point that the pancake was actually a cheaper menu item than a stand alone hashbrown, so could there possibly be any wiggle room, he cut me off mid sentence and said "OK" in a very annoyed way and took off to do something else, implying that since I wasn't ready to order I was just wasting his time. I assure you I am not exaggerating. I am a very nice customer and honestly my feelings were incredibly hurt by how rudely he treated me. I felt bad because he was clearly very busy, but in my opinion this doesn't warrant unprecedented rudeness. We got up and left at that moment, and I am sure I will not return. read more

Loved it! Wait staff friendly and professional. Service was fast and food was delicious. I thought it was somewhat pricey for brunch, but I was willing to pay it because of the talented jazz band.
