We've eaten there about five times now, all since May of this year, having stopped after a trip to nearby Sturgis. Prices are decent, food prep and serving sizes have been consistent, we've not had any problems with meal quality or service in general. Did notice the musty, old-attic smell in their vestibule, but did not find it repellant, nor was it present inside the restaurant. Tables were bussed promptly and restaurant/bathrooms otherwise appeared clean. One observation I will make though is in regards to their table/chair height geometry. The wife and I are both average-sized humans, and under 6ft tall. Most of the table/chair combos we've been seated at seem to have been proportioned for some kind of bizarrely sized Amazon people, with the edges of the tables working out to be somewhere in our upper chest range. We feel like a couple of small children sitting at the grown-up tables, and it's tedious to cut and eat food this way. Just throwing that out there. I'm guessing those are not the original chairs for the tables-- No other issues, give the place a try, recommend. read more

Called on Friday asking what time they start serving the prime rib on Saturday. Was told they serve it at 4:00 on Saturdays. We got there at 4:00 because we wanted to make a movie time. Were told it wouldn't be ready for another 45 minutes--REALLY??? The service was not good at all, many mistakes and they were not busy. We love Jaywalkers. Our last visit a week or so ago reminded us of why we like it so much. Is it perfect? No. But not many restaurants are perfect. Started off with a dirty martini and they gave us the blue cheese stuffed olives that we requested. It was a little too dirty (too much olive juice) and with the second one we requested a little less dirty. The bartender brought out our second one personally and apologized for the mistake. She needed to make the blue cheese stuffed olives and brought them out herself a few minutes later. The second drink was very good. We ordered potato soup and when it got there it was lukewarm. We sent it back and they were very nice about it. Chef Mike (rowave) heated up the soup perfectly. We shared the Chicago Wedge Salad and it was crispy fresh and dressed perfectly. And huge! I had the fried chicken basket and though the breading seemed overdone, the chicken was done very well and the seasoning was good. My wife ordered the Lake Perch special which comes either pan fried or deep fried. Neither of us are big fans of breading on our fish and she opted for the pan fried. When we got it, it had a heavy breading on it. The waitress was very helpful and suggested we send it back and get it grilled instead. We didn't know that was an option but agreed wholeheartedly. It was delivered a few minutes later and grilled perfectly with no breading (of course). It even had grill marks! It tasted great. We topped off our dinner with the main event, what they are known for: carrot cake! It's huge! Enough for four people. We cut it into four pieces, ate two and took two home to enjoy the next night with a glass of red wine. Hard to explain how good their carrot cake is. Maybe it's enough to say that we have stopped by on occasion and just ordered that. If you love carrot cake, this will be your new favorite. If you don't care for carrot cake, this will not turn you to the dark side. I'm sure they have other very nice desserts but I can't see us ever passing on the carrot cake to try them. Other memorable dishes from previous visits are the chicken gizzards and fried shrimp. I'm sure there are others just as nice and probably a few stinkers as well but eventually we'll try them all. This restaurant was recommended by a friend. When we got there they were out of the first 2 drinks we asked for. We then ordered two of their more popular sandwiches a philly steak and cheese and prime dip. This was a Saturday night at 5:30. Disappointed. This restaurant was recommended by a co-worker. I liked the location which was next to a river. The restaurant immediately struck me as a good old boy place. This can either be good or not. I needed to wait to be seated, I wasn't. The bartender finally seated m re after I asked a question. The four guys at the table next to mine started talking about Confederate money. I became uneasy. Then I noticed people who came in after me were getting their meals but I wasn't getting mine. Nobody knows where the hell Mottville is...until you mention Jaywalker, our claim to fame. Then it's "Oh, sure!" I'm relatively new to the area but I've heard this place has a storied history under various names and owners, not all good. However the gal who runs it now seems to get it, and the weekend parking lot is normally full. The menu selections are upscale for this zip code (Grouper Sandwich, excuse me?), but folks will drive quite a way for just that reason. I've worked my way through about half their menu and haven't had a disappointing entree yet. The riverfront setting is beautiful. Between us we had the fish, cheeseburger, taco salad, fried green beans, sweet potato fries, onion rings, and more. Service was friendly, and the view out the window was great. They also have a well-stocked bar, which we didn't take advantage of. However, since we were on a road trip we took advantage of the clean bathrooms. Seems like the kind of place city folks imagine small towns have instead of Applebee's. The food was about on par with an Applebee's. Everything came in very large portions and nothing I tried made me want to order that item again (except maybe the mozzerella sticks.) The coleslaw was honestly awful, the fries were soggy and bland, the salmon on the salad was really soft and flavorless. The appetizers our table ordered made it clear that their fryer works, but again, nothing to write home about. It was extremely loud (and dark) in the back room and service was incredibly slow. They FINALLY came to the table after we complained twice to out server that it was taking a long time. The steaks were thin, gristley, and cooked medium well to well done.
