This small mom and pop's on the side of hill is a great hidden gem. We stopped in after passing the restaurant several times. We were not disappointed with the food or the service. We were a party of Two and the only draw back I could see if your party was more than 4. We plan on making The HIlltop Restaurant and tradition for breakfast when in the area.

Delicious home style cooking. Small, homey atmosphere and friendly staff. We are staying in Middlebury several weeks and go there for supper frequently.

Haystack and a cinnamon roll!

We stopped in for breakfast this morning. There was a queue of people outside waiting to get in. When we said there was two of us, we were seated right away. We chose the Haystack and a cinnamon roll. It was super fast delivery and very yummy. Both were definitely big enough to split. Everything they walked past us with also looked delicious. We would stop in to try more the next time we are in the area.

Was so happy with the interior of this quaint restaurant. Everything so nice and clean. Not sure if remodeled or newly built but tasteful done. Had a hamburger with fries and egg omelette with sausage and peppers. Both were good. Waitress was attentive with a good attitude. Would definitely recommend.

They had a special for "Irish coffee" being St Patty's Day. Sure why not one of my favorites! I get a regular mug of coffee with Bailey's. For the record Irish coffee is brown sugar, Irish whiskey (preferably Tullamore D.E.W.) and whipped cream. Typically in a footed glass mug. I should have known better I was in Middlebury, IN. We inquired about an appetizer having garlic and onion. We were asked it if was preference or dietary? Does it really matter? But it is dietary for one of our party. After being told it had both we made other choices to split. Well the pretzel bites came with this HEAVY garlic cheese stuff that was the consistency of mashed potatoes. We also ordered poutine (another of our favorites) what came out was curly fries! (yes curly fries) with breaded cheese nuggets (yes breaded) with some brown thin gravy! Our main meal; one wedge salad (that was cut into quarters) with steak. Beautifully cooked beef medallions with zero flavor or seasoning. Nothing, not even S&P. The guest with the garlic/onion dietary request, asked what cheese comes on the nachos. She was told shredded and it's melted. So when her nachos came out it had mashed potato garlic cheese! She asked to have them remade. Which the server kindly did, her reorder came with a little melted cheese (you know when it's over heated and not cheese anymore) with sour cream squirted lines. I had the veggie burger which was actually good! The green goddess dressing is super tasty. Overall the place was nice and clean with super cute wallpaper in the bathroom. The prices with very reasonable. Would I go back, probably not. I wish them all the luck, might not be for us but I am sure they have fans.

Dining in a private Amish home is an incredible experience that ought to be on everyone's bucket…read morelist. This place was recommended to us not by a tourist but by a friendly relative of the Amish owner, Brenda Slabaugh (everyone in this settlement is close-knit). Like other in-home dining venues, the spacious room also serves as a social gathering and worship place for the Amish. Nearly everything in the huge kitchen is prepared from scratch and served family-style. The fixed menu includes bread, salad, chicken, roast beef, noodles, mashed potatoes, cooked vegetables, and assorted pies. Everything we tasted was phenomenal. Homemade peanut butter and jam, spread on fresh-baked bread, were ethereal. The 'colorific' salad was colorful indeed and tossed in a savory vinaigrette. White meat chicken fingers and dark meat were breaded and baked (not fried) to perfection. The beef (pot roast, perhaps) was fork-tender and juicy. All of the side dishes and pies were just as wonderful. Brenda and family members who helped her prepare and serve the meal were friendly and attentive to our needs, and happy to answer questions about Amish lifestyle and customs. Of course, a 'modern' restroom is available. This business is aimed at large parties and tour groups, but it's available to smaller parties on Wednesday evenings. Advance reservations are required

This place is a tourist trap, but for good reason…read more This huge restaurant spans 3 floors with the basement operating as a buffet option ($8.99 per child and $20+ for adults). I took a look, but was more impressed with the freshness, value and experience on the main floor with menu order options. The restaurant style reminded me of a re-imagined Amish version of Cracker Barrel with handmade oddities for sale. It was surprisingly busy with it being 4:30pm, and slightly annoying to learn the kids could not have the buffet if we were ordering from the menu because there are separate seating arrangements. We chose the restaurant side. Our waitress was bubbly and energetic... extremely thorough while maintaining a friendly neighborly vibe. She commanded the restaurant like it was her vocation and truly seemed pleased to serve her hungry patrons. Once she took our order and brought out our drinks we were delighted with a small homemade loaf of seed bread with real butter, apple butter, or Amish peanut butter (peanuts, honey, and marshmallow fluff mixed together) to top it with. As we enjoyed snacking, the two kids meals, and two adult dinners with soft drinks (they do not serve alcohol) came in around $75 total. The kids meal came with homemade fried (2) drumsticks, fries, drink and a cookie reserved for the end of the meal. Everything is homemade and my picky eater's gobbled it all up! Hubby ordered the fried chicken dinner and was happy enough, but both of us noted that our breast was slightly over cooked by a minute or so (slim margins, but made for a slightly dry and tough tasting breast). He loved his corn accompaniment, noting that it tasted like it was freshly cut from the cob. I opted for the Amish sampler plate and enjoyed the meatloaf, the breading of the fried chicken, the texture of the roast beef (though the seasoning could've improved), and the chicken stuffing with fresh carrots with a slight crunchy texture mixed in. The green bean side was good enough with the bacon, but lacking a crispy texture. The mashed potatoes and beef gravy were just okay. This gargantuan portion also came with a small side salad of leafy greens, a cucumber slice and grape tomato with dressing of your choice. Everything was good... so much food! I felt like I should've toiled on the farm all day to earn such a filling meal. For dessert we bought a homemade strawberry rhubarb pie to take home. Perfectly cooked (no soggy bottom) and wonderful texture and married flavors. The pie was worth it for $18 and if you stop by the visitor center you can get a $1 coupon. Just make sure to bring it in so they can staple it to the receipt for accounting. If we ever come back I may need to try the lemon meringue pie. The peaks were gorgeous and so tall! Pros: good home cooking. Homemade pies. Value prices for what you get. Cons: potential long waits, separate buffet from restaurant and some food lacking seasoning.

Kudos to the restaurant for having that option , otherwise I would have had to order multiple meals. Besides the fresh bread and butter - which was amazing- nothing tasted good. The fried chicken was soggy, the meatloaf was mostly bread, the beef had no flavor at all it tasted like it's been rinsed in water. The stuffing was basically just mushy bread with seasoning. The green beens were mushy frozen green beans, the baked apple was overly sugary and the flavor was just strange. The food was 2 stars at best. However, the service was 5 star, excellent. Our waitress was exceptionally attentive and generous with the free bread and helping us with the menu items. It's a very large restaurant and there were only a few us us dining there right after the holidays. There is a large interesting gift shop inside the restaurant and an entire bakery. I wish we would have gotten dessert but given that we were not enjoying our meal, we decided against it.
