Susan's is challenging to write a review about because the descriptions of the service, the food, and the excellent environment are going to read as inflated. They aren't. We have had a dozen lovely meals here- always with excellent service, great drinks, and delightful food. Last night, while inhaling the ribs and Japanese Sweet Potato, a polished older woman came up to the table and told me she got the ribs, too. Both of us looking at each other and smiling in recognition. Some version of that interaction has happened whenever we have been there. Everyone happy to be there. Tables making friends. Servers going above and beyond. Exclamations about what you are eating. Cecelia runs a beautiful and tight ship. It is a delight to come here. read more

A Friday night at 8pm in peak July. Sitting outside - once that gin and tonic hits the table, your worries have evaporated, the week has ended, you are on vacation even if just for the duration of your meal. This place is perfect. They just crush it here. They remember you, they treat you well, the food is just world class. I can't imagine summer without it. Brilliant. I think the food is very good. Take note the menu is limited especially for picky eaters. I love that we can bring our own wine or pick from their selection. Cocktails are good as well. Atmosphere always fun we have sat out and in both delightful. Give it a try if you are in sawyer. read more

Where do I start? Upon arriving we were made to feel at home. The staff is amazing, service is personable and efficient allowing guests to visit and enjoy their time together. The new duck confit on the menu with the red cabbage is to die for! Hats off to the chef. Then to top it off, I went in twice this weekend. The Risotto that was just added to the menu is a flavor and texture bomb. Hands down, the best risotto I have ever had. Appetizer and cocktails were good but pricey, entree was just ok, service was good. The club music was thumping throughout our dinner and when we ask them to change it up the waiter said it was the vibe and they wouldn't change it. So not the vibe and not appropriate for dinner. read more

PROS: Great service and ambiance. CONS: Extremely overpriced food, small portions, Chicago fine dining prices for average quality food. Given that it's the one of the few establishments in the area that try to serve "fine dining", you're better off going somewhere like Houndstooth. read more

As a new homeowner in the area, I've been dying to find great restaurants that make me feel like I'm eating dinner in Chicago. Enter Susan's! We were able to get a same night reservation on the patio and they are dog friendly as well! Brought our guy a bowl of water too. The prices are definitely higher than other places in the area but well worth it. We started with the beef tartare and cheddar cheese spread. The homemade crackers were outstanding! We also shared the Cavatelli and Japanese Sweet Potato. I loved everything! Our server was wonderful and helpful, and the atmosphere of the whole patio and restaurant were inviting and beautiful. Great ambiance, attentive service, and tasty tapas. We tried the salted cod, mixed greens, Brussel sprouts, short rib, salmon, chicken, chocolate hazelnut mousse and upside down cake. Service was excellent and the timing of the dishes was spot on. For the shared tapas, we especially enjoyed the salted cod, a purée of salted cod served with rustic bread pieces. The salmon, short rib and chicken were prepared perfectly and the wine selections paired nicely with the limited menu offerings. After a delicious meal, our group of 6 decided to share a few desserts to finish off the evening. We were disappointed and surprised hot tea and espresso were not available to enjoy after our dinner, especially for a higher end restaurant. We really enjoyed our visit to Susan's. Such a great addition to this beautiful area of SW Michigan, and the town of Sawyer. Our server, Jayden, made some great suggestions for us despite my wife's razzing humor. The busy chef was friendly and appreciated our feedback. The flavor of the different dishes we had really stood out. For instance, the Japanese sweet potato is roasted just right, and gets put through the roof with the addition of honey and butter! The fish prep on our visit was halibut, and beautifully prepared, really flavorful! The desert of pistachio sponge cake with smoked strawberries was amazing. We enjoyed an after dinner wine on their beautiful patio. Cannot wait to return on our next visit! read more

We found this place from Yelp and with the high stars we decided to try it. The atmosphere was very chic and welcoming. The food however was a big let down unfortunately. Our Falafel and chicken was very dry and really no taste to it. We didn't order any side item so I can't comment on those and the pistachio desert was also dry with some smoky after taste to it (which I wasn't able to get the taste out of my mouth after taking a few breath mints). I honestly should give this place 2 stars, but they had a good wine selection and our waitress Cary was the best! read more

Where do I start? You walk in to a warm greeting every visit. Great ambiance, great food, extremely attentive staff. Easily one of the nicest places in Harbor Country and beyond for that matter. The decor is gorgeous and the outdoor seating is lovely. The patio is even dog friendly. We also tried the new Sunday brunch over the weekend and it did not disappoint. The hippest new place in SW Michigan Harbor Country!!! Excellent menu farm to table has become my first choice in dining whether just a casual family meal or out with friends . Beautiful bar, nice wine menu and a dog friendly patio. Our family had the Gem Salad, Brazilino Fish - Amish Chicken and shrimp cocktail!!! The kids were very happy with the fried chicken sandwich and beef sandwich!!! CiCi has excellent customer service - she heard I wanted a Cosmopolitan and went out to the market to buy cranberry juice just for me!!! Susan's advertised they would be serving Sunday brunch, so we decided to try it. Due to medical reasons my diet is severely limited, but most restaurants that serve breakfast/brunch can do a simple egg of some sort. The card on which they advertised had a plate with a couple of fried eggs and some bacon, so again, it seemed safe to assume I would be able to get a simple accommodation. When I read the menu, there was no main item which I was able to eat, but one dish had a poached egg and another fried eggs, so it looked promising. I asked for two sides which were listed in the menu (toast and avocado) and then (after informing the waitress that I am only able to eat a limited diet) asked for a fried egg. I was told I could not have that. I said I was unable to eat the other things that came with the $17 dish that included the fried eggs and could I please just get the eggs. The answer was 'no.' After eating the toast (which was over-toasted) and my avocado, someone other than our waitress came over and asked how our meal was. I explained my disappointment with their service and was told their thing is to serve composite meals. I re-explained that I could not eat the rest of what was in their dishes, but that I would like to be able to go out with my friends to a restaurant. They claimed they could make adjustments to their dishes, but when I asked for something simple, they would not. I told her it was clear they did not want my business. She left the table and they brought back our bill with the meal comped. I DID NOT ASK FOR, NOR WANT FREE FOOD. They did not discuss doing that and it came off as a way to make them feel good without actually being caring or kind. Sure they have all the indications that they want to appear caring (rainbow shirted waitress, sign saying 'Ukrainian kitchen') but when it came down to being helpful and kind in person ... not so much And yes, we paid our bill anyway. Edit: I did not eat those dishes in the other review. Others in our party did. I told your waitress my diet is VERY restricted. She offered no options. She only said she couldn't do anything. You have fried eggs on your other dish, so not too hard to do just a simple fried egg on a plate. You personally showed annoyance when I told you my experience was not good. You did not discuss any remedy, but merely walked off and then comped the meal as if it somehow made up for not being willing to give any help to someone who asked politely. YOU came to the table and asked about our experience. I did NOT come to you to complain. So my accusation stands. You may feel great about being kind to your employees, but you were unkind bordering on rude to this customer and absolutely unaccommodating. My diagnosis is new and those other reviews were older. The chances of you knowing how to cook for what I have is slim. I asked for the only things I could identify as not harmful to me. I get it. You have your 'thing' you are doing and you would prefer not to help someone. Your waitress offered me nothing useful. Was I to tell her my food was good? acceptable? If you had cared or asked I could have explained but all you wanted to do was explain your vision of your restaurant. That's fine, but people should know that you don't make accommodations before going in. read more

Great experience! My husband and I stopped in for dinner during our visit to Sawyer last week and were really impressed with Susan's! They have a pretty patio area that is dog friendly. Staff were all very friendly and attentive. The meal itself was delicious! We had the falafel/pita and broccoli risotto. Finished with both the dessert options that were spot on and not overly sweet. This restaurant is such a gem! We had a large group with a couple dietary restrictions and our server walked us through the menu and let us know what substitutions they could make - so fantastic!! We always look forward to Susan's. The menu is diverse enough, with some favorites like the octopus and the fried chicken sandwich. Offering Sancerre and the halibut exceeded our expectations. Our visiting friends commented on the tastefully modern decor and cool music. It's the full package! Susan's increasing popularity might warrant a review of personnel capacity to maintain a leisurely pace, timing the courses more precisely by giving full attention to all tables. For a restaurant that only recently opened, it's my opinion that they already have good game. The staff made it for me.. so thoughtful, friendly and talented. We've tried the pork meatballs with white wine braised prunes, aged cheese & sage, grilled quail with warm pears, endive & brown butter. The burgers are awesome too. They have a white cheddar burger with bacon, caramelized onions & dijonnaise & a pimento cheese burger with pickles & lettuce. Great little gem nestled in downtown Sawyer. Four of us went to Susan's for dinner on a Friday. Short version...it was great. Some details... * The atmosphere is warm and comfortable. * We were first greeted at the bar by Cecelia and her sister. Very welcoming and great drinks. * We then grabbed a table and ordered some starters. We went with the pork meatballs and steak tartar. Both were very good. * For our entrees we had the roasted chicken, the pork chop, NY strip and the roast butternut squash with savory walnut oatmeal, brussel sprouts and mushrooms. The ambiance was amazing! There was a lot of thought and effort put into the design and I was excited to celebrate my 40th here. The service was great! The food was just not it. We frequent Chicago restaurants and I am used to smaller portions at restaurants and I actually prefer it. So if you don't want smaller portions this is not the place for you but personally I'm good with it. That being said, if portions are small then I expect the bites to pack a punch. I was very let down. The farmers cheese board had decent fig spread but the cheese was flavorless. The falafel pita, falafel was over salted and overcooked. The sweet potato was ok but honestly I make Japanese sweet potatoes at home and it was literally just buttered, salted, with some honey. I really wanted to like this place, it's great to see these updated restaurants and businesses in these small towns but the food was just such a let down. read more

Great vibe and thoughtful service. Food left much to be desired risotto was fantastic. Steak tartar was dry and pieces were too big for it to be a tartare. Burrata was not a burrata but a somewhat dry piece of cheese and the piece of cracker was not conducive to the dish. The octopus was tasty but for the price ..... it was tiny. The chicken breast was fine but incredibly overpriced and with absolutely no accompaniments...nothing! Same for the beef. Great fries. read more

We found Susan's on a last-minute search for a dinner spot around the Sawyer-Three Oaks area. Loved the mid-century decor and simple, elegant furnishings. The Amish chicken was especially tender and flavorful. The protein portion was more than enough. Maybe add a small side as an an added value to the customer, but excellent. Oddly I haven't spent much time in Michigan, despite how close it is to Chicago, but was so surprised to find a few restaurants and cute stores in little Sawyer, MI. Ended up here for dinner before heading back to Chicago on a day trip. The atmosphere is not at all what you'd expect to find in a small town. It's midcentury modern vibe and decor are beautiful! The food is also presented really well. Again, exceeding expectations! I had the fried chicken sandwich which was so good and had just the right amount of heat. The fries were great too. I was told the menu changes based on the season and your best bet is to order a few small plates to share. I can't wait to go back in the summer to check out more of what Michigan has to offer and also see what Susan's has in store for me.. read more

My husband and I just found out about Susan's. We ate there tonight for our 32nd anniversary dinner. I seldom write reviews, but Susan's deserves one.
