Java has become my ride-or-die coffee stand and a staple of the Dimond/Sand Lake neighborhoods. My 20oz Breve w/half sweet Irish Cream is made perfectly every.single.time regardless of its 7 AM, 11PM or any time in-between. The ladies are ALWAYS cheerful, kind and provide exceptional customer service (yep, every single one of them). The owner is a sweetheart, works shifts on occasion, and is genuinely thankful for your business! The staff has a good system of getting your drink made, payment processed and getting you on your way quickly without making YOU feel rushed, even if there's another customer behind you. On rare occasion there can be a line of 1 or 2 cars, but it goes plenty fast. I don't drink Lotus or Red Bull drinks, but My daughter does and says they are the best in Anchorage. She is a barista at a different coffee place and out of her way to get her drinks from here. They have a good frequent customer reward system in place that thankfully doesn't require punch cards or apps. Oh and our dog loves coming here with us the car as well, the girls greet her with huge smiles which is her weakness. I ordered a 12oz white chocolate mocha with pumpkin and whipped cream.. expecting it to be about 4.50/5.00 since that's an average price for my order and to my surprise it was $8.50... I used to love coming here because it's right down the road from me. But $12.75 for a 20 oz mocha frappe w/ caramel drizzle 4 shots is egregious. The shop at the college (where everything is overpriced and okay at best) is $6.70 and it frankly tastes the same. Even Boom you can get a 32 oz frappe with 6 shots for $9. But unfortunately the management seems to be the opposite, I've heard this from fellow customers along with employees and my own opinion goes along with this statement. Today an understandable mistake happened no big deal but what I learned from it is absolutely ridiculous. I was accidentally made a 16 oz instead of a 24oz they went to correct it how they are forced to not how they should as a business and a COFFEE SHOP. They poured the drink into a bigger cup and guess what ONLY ice was added no more drink or flavor NOTHING and guess what they cost different prices as well. This is absolutely crazy. Java the Hut is bright green, located in the Jewel Lake Bowl parking lot. They have convenient hours, short lines and friendly baristas. I always order their chai latte's. On my most recent visit I wanted something fun for my daughters birthday. I told my barista to surprise me. She concocted an Italian soda with popping pearls, I believe, complete with whipped cream and sprinkles. She used cupcake and other yummy flavors (that I'm forgetting) that melded well. I stopped by for two iced lattes before heading out of town. When the girl repeated my order back she only read back one of the lattes and asked if that was right. I went "and you got this latte too right?" She said no, asked what it was, and quickly added the second latte then asked if that was everything. She handed me two lattes and took my card. Then a third one came out. At this point she finally reads the full order to me and there was a latte I never even ordered on there. She told me they have absolutely no way of offering any kind of refunds and stated the system doesn't allow it before asking if I wanted the drink anyways and adding "if not I'll drink it". The girls here are great, they remember my order and are always friendly and consistent. That's what I look for in a cup of coffee, consistent. Everyday I go to java it's the same cup of coffee (sf vanilla breve) and it tastes the same no matter who makes it. That's my favorite part. MICE DROPPING!!! I would put a 0 if that were an option. There are many reasons why I advise no one going here. I have been a couple times to give them the benefit of the doubt. Every time something was not right. But here is where I REALLY decided not to go ever again. The girls who were working were cussing and were talking about mice droppings with the coffee cups. That really disturbed me. I feel like places with mice or bug problems should get shut down. I have no idea how they could pass inspections if they have mice and mouse dropping in the shop. I'm re-writing this review simply because the customer service has been lacking. When a barista tells me that I'm wrong about what my drink is (I worked in coffee for 6 years) and wants to charge me for a different drink, I think it's time to look for a new coffee stand. If you want tips, you don't tell the customer that they are wrong. I've been over charged the last couple of times I've come here. ALSO don't talk about how wrong the customer is while you're making the drink... I can hear you loud and clear outside the window. That's just rude. They also are serving steam dot coffee not kaladi, which I didn't mind previously (not a fan of SD) only because I was getting such great customer service. Oh well. read more

I'm in Anchorage for a few weeks most years, and since my in laws live around the corner from this place, I'm in here almost every day. The drinks are great, the service is quick (and cute), and I get a free newspaper with my coffee. If this is your first time visit Alaska, I suggest you stop in at one of the many Coffee huts you'll see in almost every parking lot. The great thing about Anchorage is that there's a coffee cart on every corner. The bad thing about Anchorage is that most of the coffee you get from the corner coffee carts is terrible. Java the Hut is a standout exception. Perhaps it's because they serve Steam-Dot coffee, or maybe they just know how to brew better. Whatever the reason, I'm never disappointed. If I need some coffee when I'm out and about, I will go out of my way to visit Java the Hut. I've been going here consistently since moving nearby and the pricing seems to change although my drink order doesn't. One lady in particular seems to jack-up the price as she sees fit. The coffee isn't great and the continual price change with the mood of some of the staff makes it not worth it. Also, their punch card isn't for a free drink... it's for $3 off of one order. The last time I used a full punch card the same lady who changes the price the most changed the price in the time from handing me my drink to when she took my payment. So that she made more money on it after she saw i was using a full punch card. I always tip at least 25% so I'm not sure why she always changes/ups the price on me. read more

I only give two stars because the coffee is good tasting and priced well. BUT The customer service has got to change. I only work two minutes away from this shop but have been made late to work many times because of how slow the baristas are in the morning. Not only do they only have one girl working during rush hour (630 am), but if there is a regular they recognize on the other window you best believe you won't be getting even your drink order in until they've had a full convo with the regular and they received their drink. There is always a line of three or more cars on each side of the shop in the morning and it's no wonder why. Hire two girls to work in the morning. I've literally had to leave from the window/the line 5+ times due to waiting over 15 minutes where as another shop in town would only take 5 minutes even with a line like that. I can no longer go to this shop in the morning because I don't know if I will be stuck in line 5 minutes or 20 minutes. This is unacceptable. read more

There are coffee carts every few blocks in anchorage but this one tops them! Usually, if you get a decent cup of coffee from one of the carts, only one girl working there makes good coffee, and its hit or miss if she makes your coffee that day. At Java the Hut, every employee consistently makes great coffee. I go there most mornings before work and I can count on my coffee being just as awesome as the last.
