This was a first for this sole purpose. Mainly boots, but also packs. They compete with REI no doubt. But they have an edge in my opinion on service. My service with Chase was phenomenal from entering the store to showing me every aspect of technical gear I would need on a two week European hike, or even local in the Appalachian. I walked out knowing much more and still researching. They did not have the specific hard to locate Lowa boots I wanted to try on. They are rarely retail, closest is NC. No purchases yet, but soon.

We saw a solid amount of outdoor adventure gear and then looked at hiking and summer clothes for a while. We did ask for assistance and the staff were friendly and took us right to the area we were looking for. The store is small, a decent stock but nothing really spectacular. The prices are decent and the customer service is great. There were no old school Army fatigue pants, no jungle boots, no strong leather duty belts. Instead they had knock off cargo pants that lacked the double stitching or buttons and cost double what they should, regular hiking shoes at double the cost, no canteens and the staff didn't seem interested in helping or even knowledgeable about what certain things were. I prefer Army Navy stores where there are real vets who know what you are talking about when you ask for something, are happy to help, have lots of inventory, and have actual real MREs, real steel canteens for long hikes, real camo tens and rucksacks. They're ok for some superficial stuff but not what I was hoping for.

During the summer months I often rent kayaks here due to the extremely cheap cost of only $10 a day or $20 for the weekend. It wasn't until I became a home owner that I I became a homeowner and recently that I started renting a lawn equipment to include aerators And dethatchers, I had zero problems renting a 8 foot trailer from them. The wife and I have talked about renting one of their 16 foot travel trailer in taking it for a trip this coming spring. **Overall, I have nothing bad to speak about MWR rental unlike a few of the other yelp reviews here. Just like everywhere else when you rent something make sure you thoroughly look over your equipment and gear, if you have any issues bring it up with them and have it taken care of. I showed up 15 min late and was charged $50 and a lecture on making it to muster on time. Talked to the manager about the name calling and ridiculous late fee, he told me it was a business and has a masters degree in business. Well Graduate, I'll no longer look to your business and be sure to guide others away. Get your money back from Phoenix online because they failed you. They also hit me about it being dirty, it was waaaaay cleaner when I returned it, I even fixed broken parts on the trailer because it was a safety issue. It's a shame MWR has come to this. They are a DOD contract protected business with no personal initiative to make it better or have ownership. I recommend renting from established real businesses that want your business back. It's just a matter of time when MWR loses these programs/opportunities because of the poor business model the manager displayed. I feel sorry for those that rent there and don't read this.

I'm a VB native that has been purchasing boards and clothing since WRV located on Norfolk Ave. I now live out of the area and only make it down a few times a year and when I do, I typically purchase WRV clothing for my three children since they're known as the "Beach Kids" in our mountain community & still manage to easily spend a few hundred dollars annually between VB & OBX locations annually. I attempted to exchange (& spend more) an unworn with tag intact logo tank top that my son did not like10 weeks after purchase. Associate told me I was past 30 day return window but he will allow it. I was a bit shocked because I knew I did not see any mention of this on the receipt, but I didn't have my readers when I was in the store. I also found a recent OBX receipt that does indeed list a 30 day return policy. Website has a bit of a contradiction for period of return/exchange. Just wanna let management know so they can decide what their policy truly is and updated on the receipt, website, and train their employees.
