i look forward to coming here every time i visit nevada city. cute little coffee shop on broad street. it's super busy in the mornings, waves of people come every 10 minutes but the workers there are always on top of it and super friendly. their bagels are amazing and the vegan burrito was really good! i love their kale slaw. our waitress forgot one of our items because it was super busy but felt really bad and got it out super fast and even made it up to us by giving us a free muffin. she was super kind and the muffin was tasty. great coffee too! read more

Was visiting Nevada City for the weekend and stopped here in the morning to get coffee. This was probably the friendliest and most welcoming place we stopped at between both Nevada City and Grass Valley. The owner ( I think) was engaging and welcoming and even gave us recommendations for the day. The other people in the shop were nice as well. They had an excellent selection of coffee, lattes, chai etc and some food items. Was sad I didn't go back back for the violet latte because that looked amazing. Highly recommend supporting such a great place, especially if you are visiting from out of town. read more

Stopped in for a latte and muffin. After placing my order, I was served the muffin and sat down to wait for my latte. After ten minutes I went to the counter to ask about my order and was rudely told by a staff person that this was not Starbucks and I have to wait my turn. After twenty minutes, and having finished my muffin, I went to the counter and asked for a refund. After the counter person again was a bit rude, and didn't know how to give a customer a cash refund, I suggested that maybe they should let a customer know that there would be a long wait. I wasn't rude, did not raise my voice and after giving me my refund was asked to leave the restaurant. I've been getting coffee here for years. Will never go back! read more

I've been here several times and the coffee/tea is good but the customer service is a bit rude. The sales rep acted annoyed that she had been interrupted to serve me - she was on her phone; and secondly, I had ordered a black coffee and wanted half and half, which they didn't have :( Not recommended unless you're desperate for the coffee. read more

My hands down favorite spot for coffee in Nevada City or Grass Valley. And to be honest, none of them are bad! This one's just the best. Even if the owner weren't an incredible woman, running her business in a manner that respects and values the entire community; and even if every choice she made didn't express her conscientiousness as an employer and community member, I would still come here first because the coffee is great and - now pay attention here - there is nowhere else in town where you can just pour your f--king coffee yourself while you pay! The other joints (God bless 'em) have you standing on some silly ass line and waiting on 17 matcha orders to be prepared before you can get your simple, honest, excellent cup of coffee. At Java John's the carafes are right there BOOM pouring, paying, drinking... and then you get your burrito. What else do you want? So yeah, even if the owner weren't an example of what every proprietor in a caring, inclusive community ought to be, it would still be my favorite coffee shop. The fact we can support her and her amazing staff while enjoying the delightful experience of Java John's is just a bonus. read more

I'm not given to writing negative reviews, but I felt very disappointed after my experience with Java John's yesterday. We stopped in as they seemed to be the only place in town doing take-away sandwiches. We ordered the 'BLAT' (Bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato) and the Cali veggie and took them to go for our journey home. Sorry to say they were neither very good sandwiches (stale bread on both), and the BLAT especially was very disappointing. I found one tiny piece of bacon and almost no avocado on it. Maybe it was because it was the day after a holiday? I don't know, every place has it's off days, but this was the only time I've been in this place and this was my experience. I was further soured on it because the cash register - as so many do these days - prompted for a tip, with the minimum available being 18% (for over the counter service!) unless you choose to go the 'custom' route, and then we waited for about fifteen minutes for them to make the sandwiches. I might go back to try their coffee some time, but I'll be skipping the sandwiches. read more

I'm a frequent visitor to the area (lots of family in Nevada City and Auburn) so I remember this place BP (Before Pandemic). The new owners have definitely revamped -- much more counter space now over table space -- and the vibe is a little younger, a little higher energy. Nothing wrong with the old place, but the new Java John's is fun and the servers were super friendly. Our sandwiches were tasty, and my Mom (the coffee queen) gave thumbs up for the coffee. I have always enjoyed coming back to Java John's. Their special coffee drinks are far superior in quality to Starbuck's or Dutch Bros. I wish they had extended hours, even more creative seating options, food displays, and more consistent food quality. Were a few Doordash moments during the 2020-2022 pandemic that left much to be desired in the food presentation and overall quality. I love their hummus. I am a garbanzo bean freak though, through to my core, so I will always be a loyal follower of their bagel and hummus combo. Service is just OK, although their employee, "Chris H.," was so enthusiastic and authentically driven to go above and beyond to promote his employer in a charming, non-creepy way. This may sound weird but after living in Grass Valley now for 23 years, JJ's is one staple, solid, local establishment that I find myself always wanting/needing more from. Can't put my finger on this but I remain intrigued non-the-less for the benefit of all hopefully! read more

It's quite rare to walk into a coffee shop in Northern California that is as non-pretentious and down to earth as this one. There was no loud obnoxious hipster racket and not one person in the entire store on a chilly Sunday morning was on their computer. The food, drinks, and customer service were all unapologetically AWFUL. I ordered the JJ club($9.95), add pesto, no tomatoes, an iced chai ($5.50) a "snickerdoodle" and a lemon bar. (The only thing that didn't suck, probably from an outside source) The employee behind the counter wrote down my order, took my money, and promptly went into the back and used his unwashed hands to extract two pieces of stale bread from the bag and placed them in the toaster oven. When I received my "sandwich" almost 20 minutes later, we set off for our day without inspecting them. 15 minutes later when we reached our destination I removed the cellophane from the brown box (cheap and tacky way to bundle a sandwich) there were tomatoes on it, the turkey was bland and dry, the avocado was browning and stale, the lettuce was limp and lifeless, and the cheese could be compared to craft singles. Not wanting to go back to the place that made it, I threw it away after taking photos to prove that I wasn't just a problem customer. I went in later in the evening and was rudely told to come back when the owner was in. So here I am writing this review. I got a refund for my sandwich, not for the watery flavorless chai, nor the bland stale cookie either. The owner said that I made the weirdest request she's ever heard in 14 years of business. I don't think a refund for a shitty sandwich that was made wrong is too much to ask or particularly weird. Won't be back. ALSO, flies everywhere. Flies in the kitchen, flies in the showcase, flies in the dining room, I counted 5 on my table alone at one point. read more

Personally i dont know ehere the bad reviews on service come from. I work down tje street and have chosen this to be my morning coffee stop. It isnt the cheapest coffee downtown but i come for the quick chat with thw baristas that always puts my day at a good spin. I dont remember their names but the blonde gentleman and shorter lady who are there in tje AM ALWAYS give me great service even in the morning when nobody wants to be awake. Update 1/2016 - never has anything I wrote generated as much "hate compliments" as this review. I have been getting bullied on Yelp for the past year+ from accounts with no reviews or other Yelp activity. Is this managements way of shutting up honest feedback? This is absurd and ridiculous. If you want to reply to my feedback, be professional and do it publicly. Despite the good reviews on here, I call out Tourist Trap!! My fiance and I were both disappointed with almost everything we ordered. Too bad most other cafes in town close at 2:30 or 3pm. First of all, everything was overpriced for the quality/quantity received. $2.50 for espresso, $4.75 for a mocha, $9 for a lox bagel, and $9 for a veggie sandwich (more expensive than a turkey sandwich!!). Living in San Francisco and NYC, I would expect more high-end fare at these prices, but it what we got was essentially basic corner deli food. The worst was the lox bagel. There was barely any cream cheese on it, and, quite literally, a SPRINKLING of small shreds of lox. They lay it on as if it was a garnish - there were more capers on this thing than lox! Let me remind you this is a $9 bagel...this is not the price at which you skimp on the main ingredient in your sandwich. It was just absurd to look at. We did manage to get them to add more lox to it, though the place was manned by two kids and no manager, and one was resistant to our request stating that the owner instructed them to only use 1.5 ounces of lox. The mocha we got was nearly all milk. While I specified what I wanted in my custom sandwich ingredient by ingredient, they superfluously added cheese to it. And the multi-grain bread was just falling apart. Once again, for a $9 sandwich it just was basic deli style and not the high quality I would expect at those prices. You can do better at a museum cafe. It was just very disappointing all around that our order had so many issues with it and everything was in the hands of two high-school kids. And the prices just really didn't match the level of quality and service that we received. Basically, this experience left us feeling that this place was run by one of those owners who just tries to skimp on everything and charge as much as possible for it, to squeeze out a max profit from unsuspecting tourists. I feel this is just a sore spot in an otherwise super authentic town that offers great quality food. read more

You won't believe this one. My wife & I stopped in last Sunday to buy sodas & take a short break from walking. About 4:30pm we were about to leave & asked for ice refills. Two young girls were working & one told my wife she couldn't have more ice as they were now closed!! Unbelievable! I don't often get "the shakes" from coffee as my physiology has adjusted to the massive quantities of caffeine I consume, but this place managed to make me a cappuccino that did just that. It was one of the strongest cappuccinos I have ever had, but ain't nothin' wrong with that. The barista also did a killer job on the foam. My companion had an espresso and also said it was strong and knocked his socks off. They even have bagels and cookies the size of dinner plates if you wanted something to accompany your beverage. My cappuccino was $3.50 which I am glad my cafe mate brought his cash, because they only accept cash or checks. And leaving a coffee house without a coffee would have been incredibly disappointing, indeed. read more

Java John's, literally, saved me from not being able to work for a WHOLE day. My home internet was done hard, and since I work from home for my day job (electronic sales) AND my Tutoring Business, I was "dead in the water." Java John's has super fast Wi-fi, and let me hang out for the better portion of a day. GREAT food, I had the breakfast burrito and later, a HUGE oatmeal cookie and a big glass of Almond Milk. Since I am lactose intolerant, that was wonderfully considerate of them. They also, like FEW places in the area, have ice cold Root Beer in a bottle, my personal favorite drink. I strongly recommend them for breakfast, lunch, or a nice place to hang out and get some work done. read more
