Have you ever went to an establishment where you feel like you didn't belong and weren't welcomed? well, this is the place for me! we went in on a saturday mid-morning/early afternoon while driving back to Sac. i picked this place based on the great yelp reviews on their food. however, that i was far from the actual truth. upon arrival, we weren't greeted right away which was our first indication. we stood there at the host station for about 5-10 minutes without acknowledgment. i assumed that they were busy and it seemed like there was only one waiter/server was present so we were patient. As we were waiting, we noticed at least 4 empty tables so my daughter was guessing with my husband which table we will be seated at. Each empty table was clean and had the desired lighting from the sunlight which made the room felt brighter which was a great ambiance. However, when the host acknowledge us, he didn't sit us in the main room but put us in the dark backroom with a reserved belted off section. I didn't think too much into it but I was wrong. We then proceeded to wait another 10 more minutes before getting any service. The bartender came by, stared me down with the disgruntled face, and said," why are you here? what do you want?" He then proceeded to take our orders and informed us that he was the bartender and no one told him that we were seated here. At this time, the bar section wasn't even busy at all. While we waited for our food, my family and I contemplated whether or not to walk out due to the poor service and the timing of the food which took forever. When the food finally arrived it was horrible. Everything was either too salty or too sour. I had ordered the blueberry french toast with light mascarpone and lemon curd. The blueberries sauce was extremely sour. Hubby had the hash nash which was extremely salty. He didn't even ask how my hubby liked his eggs cooked. the potatoes were good. Daughter had the kids chicken strips and french fries, which was the best dish among the three of us. Very disappointed in the service and in the food.
Located inside a 100+ year old hotel. Amazing to know that this place has so much history. You can see photos in the entrance of what it used to look like when people would arrive here by horse! Rich, tasteful and historic decor. Excellent service and food. This looks like one of the fancier dining areas of this location. We were visiting this area on a day trip and stopped here for brunch. Highly recommend!
Delicious breakfast! I had the Hash Nash which is a play on corned beef. It was made with beef cheeks and had a hint of horse radish cream. The potatoes were also crispy. So good! We also had the Grass Valley Mushrooms scramble which was made with oyster mushrooms and fluffy scrambled eggs. Our server Julian, was also very friendly and attentive. The restaurant was beautiful and located inside the hotel.
Back at Lola, and this was one of the best meals I've ever had! I ordered Mary's roasted chicken with polenta, roasted carrots, and my partner got the steak frites with chimichurri sauce. We also got the focaccia. Everything was exquisite. Lola's is so beautiful, we love being there. It feels like "our" place.
This place is such a vibe! Such gorgeous decor and incredible food, my friend and I went here for brunch and it did not disappoint! Both dishes were delicious and fresh, we were completely stuffed haha and the waitress was so nice and attentive! We're definitely coming back and cant wait to try some cocktails at the bar next time!
This restaurant which is located in the National Exchange Hotel, has a beautiful interior consisting of Victorian-style wallpaper, wooden seating booths with dark-green upholstery and a solid hardwood floor. My brunch was truly delightful as I ate a satisfyingly light meal. My granola in organic yoghurt was well presented when served, reasonably priced at $12 and a was decent portion in size. I was honestly surprised to learn that the restaurant did not have an espresso machine to make a cappuccino and the unlimited drip-coffee seemed a little pricey for $5. Although the serving staff were very friendly and accommodating, because I waited at least 20 minutes for the yoghurt parfait, the service was quite slow. Nonetheless, I did enjoy admiring the restaurant's ambiance while I waited.
Phenomenal dining experience while staying at the National Exchange Hotel. Lola is one of those rare restaurants that is committed to fresh local ingredients and has the talent in the kitchen to create a memorable experience. That its also in a charming, historic old hotel only lends to the overall amazing experience. We loved our drinks (lychee slushee cocktail thing was delicious) and loved the food even more. We were a large party and ordered nearly everything. The standouts were the oysters, steak, fried chicken, mac & cheese, peach and whipped ricotta app, focaccia app, caesar salad and amazing chocolate brownie dessert.
A friend and I had dinner here recently and we really enjoyed our meal. The waiter was phenomenal. Engaging, helpful, all around great. We both had nice glasses of wine and shared the Brussel sprouts as an appetizer. They were nicely crisp and flavorful. Loved the flavor of the sauce. For my entree, I had the lamb shank. This was fall off the bone tender. Very tasty. Liked the root veggies and bean puree underneath the lamb. A really satisfying meal. A cute place, great service, yummy food.
It was our first night in town and we wanted to go someplace a bit fancy with family and this is where we ended up. It's a lovely location in the historic District of Nevada city in the old national hotel with everything done beautifully inside. Overall, we enjoyed our visit, but seemed to all have some issues with the food, unfortunately. The shrimp cocktail disappointed all four of us, both with limp shrimp and odd cocktail sauce it was in. The brussels sprouts were a bit flaky and didn't seem to have much substance to them. I had the chicken and it was pretty good, although nothing to write home about. I think the best thing on our table was the salmon entrée, which was reported as very delicious, although a bit underdone. Our server was excellent and helpful throughout the evening. I'm glad we came as it was a really neat location, but would probably check out another place on my next visit to Nevada city.
Say yes to the Nash Hash if you come to Lola for brunch. I've always been a big fan of a good Corned Beef Hash...but this is a WHOLE other level. Not even comparable. Crispy potatoes, pickled onion, and a rich horseradish with au jus, two fried eggs and Slow-braised beef cheeks. Every flavor balanced out and came together beautifully. I ended up coming for brunch here twice this week just to have it again before I leave to go home !
Dinner here was such a special and memorable experience! Our server was kind enough seat us in a comfortable booth. Our server was so helpful in making suggestions. The decor and ambiance is so elegant but also warm and inviting. Food was spectacular!! We had oysters, very salad, chowder, steak and pork tenderloin. So delicious!! And the price is not exorbitant, given the quality of food. Would love to return.
Every time I visit my friends in grass Valley I look forward to eating out at the local restaurants. This is my first time having breakfast at Lola's in the National Exchange Hotel and Bar in Nevada City. It's a good idea to make reservations on weekends. Service was an A+. Our group of four had four different dishes and all were reported to be excellent as well as mine which was the Benedict with Niman Ranch ham. I like to use Tabasco on my hashbrowns, and they brought me their homemade substitute chili sauce, which was fabulous, and on the milder side of Tabasco. The eggs were poached perfectly, and the hashbrowns were to die for, crispy, flavorful, and not at all oily. Portion sizes left no one hungry. If you really have a sweet tooth their French toast is to die for. There's free parking in the back of the hotel. Enjoy!
Went here for dinner on our second night and absolutely loved it! Beautiful venue inside and out! Service was wonderful!! And the food was absolutely delicious! We really enjoyed everything that we got, left so full, happy and wanting to go back for sure!

We ordered the shareable tomato + peach app with whipped feta and flatbreads.. SUPER good. Both the steak frites and ribeye (ordered medium) came out overcooked (medium well or more), but they still had good flavor and didn't ruin the meal. Cocktail menu was unique and we enjoyed both of our drinks. The place seats a lot of people and seemed pretty booked, so I'd def recommend making reservations in advance. The interior decor is well thought out and curated, while preserving history of the old, original building. They had a live jazz band, which created a cool ambiance, but I will say it was quite loud inside. Overall, we enjoyed our experience and would recommend it to others. read more
The food was delicious at this hotel restaurant, but other aspects left a little to be desired. We had a reservation for 4 at 6pm and had requested a booth in the bar. In all honesty, the hostess staff told us they could not guarantee a booth. However, when we arrived, we were told that all the booths were full, and we were seated in the main dining room. I walked into the bar to take a look at the booths and one was completely empty. Disappointing. The menu was creative and had something for everyone from meat eaters to vegetarians and vegans. Shout out to server Sierra, who was friendly and happy to make recommended and answered all of our questions with a smile. The setting is open and a little loud, but being in the National Hotel, the aesthetic flowed well with the hotel decor. The disappointing part of my party's experience was the fact that service took sooo long. We ordered an appetizer which came out with our main entrees. And drinks that we ordered before any of the food came out, came long after our meal had been served and only after we we asked what had happened to them. We were told that the bar was very busy and that's what delayed our drinks. However, with such a popular hotel, you think they would plan for this in advance. Overall, I would dine here again, but not during the busy dinner service. I would come during off hours only or be seated for dinner at 5 PM before the rush. read more

Hi Wendy,…
My friend and I were in town for the holiday weekend and also my bday, so we decided to come here for my bday dinner. We started with drinks, and I got the Root 66, while my friend got a beer. We also decided to share all our dishes, so we got: *Cauliflower - I didn't love this, it was a bit over charred for me and had a little bit of a weird taste to it *Tomato and peach with whipped pita - this was amazing. I am not a huge tomato person, but the produce was so fresh and flavorful that I could have eaten just that and been happy! *Salmon - this was delicious! *chowder - I got a cup of this and I loved it, it was so flavorful and full of fish! *Olive oil cake - we finished with this and it was delicious, not too sweet. Overall, it was a lovely experience! The place had great food, drinks, and I just love the look of the restaurant and bar with the restored look. Would absolutely come back! read more

My girlfriend surprised me with reservations to Lola for dinner on my birthday weekend in Nevada city. Wow!! Delicious food and stunning interior design renovation. My friends wanted to travel to Nevada City for the Christmas market and I remembered that Emily Henderson featured the hotel redesign so I wanted to go for both things, and neither disappointed. Might use photos of the dining hall for future home renovations. We ordered: - various cocktails and wines. I ended up with an orange wine bc none of the cocktails were jumping out at me but previous seasonal menus looked good. I also loved my friends honey dessert wine - brussel spouts: Tis the season , and they were perfectly crispy and oily and salty - kabocha squash entree: a perfect blend of vegetables, light carbs, and protein from the lentils. I couldn't decide whether I liked the flavor of the mustard-cumin-fennel(?) tadka or the sauce (which was labeled romanesco but I felt was halfway between a romanesco and a coconut milk South Indian sauce) flavor better - all worked for an epic mouth experience - lamb entree: tender with perfectly cheesy polenta without being too heavy - pork chop entree: a massive piece of meet, somewhat unevenly cooked but still yummy Logistics: - indoor seating only - limited street parking nearby - 1-2 vegetarian entrees - reservations recommended especially around the Christmas market - there's a separate, louder and more crowded bar area with tables , see if you can sit in the main dining room read more
The overall experience was fine. Not bad, just not great. The staff were pleasant and helpful but seemed a little inauthentic in their manner. The menu was fairly limited and the food we had, while good, was, again, not in any way exceptional. I'm a connoisseur of macaroni and cheese and I did enjoy Lola's, served with a bacon jam, but it wouldn't coax me back. The roasted chicken was fine but the polenta was dull. The budino was not a familiar dessert to me, but seemed excessively sweet. I do love the ambiance of Lola and would definitely return to linger over a cocktail or two, especially on a dreary day, but with so many options in the area, it may be a little while before I circle back for a meal. read more

Lola in Nevada City is an absolute gem and one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time. The highlight for me was the steak and it was cooked to perfection, incredibly flavorful, and truly one of the best I've ever had. Every bite was tender, juicy, and elevated by their house-made chimichurri, which added the perfect bit of freshness and herby flavor. To complement the meal, I ordered an espresso martini, and it was exactly how I requested. smooth, well-balanced, and the ideal mix of bold coffee and sweetness. My family ordered the salmon and the steak frites, and both dishes were equally impressive. They couldn't stop raving about the quality and flavor, which speaks volumes to the consistency of the kitchen and the chef. Between the attentive service, inviting atmosphere, and standout food, Lola easily earns a top spot on my list of must-visit restaurants. I can't wait to return. read more

What a nice find. We haven't been to Nevada City for a long while. We came this hour -drive from home while in the area for a concert. The whole historic area of the town is decorated for the holidays, very festive. Lola was warm and welcoming. We asked to be out in an hour and our server did a great job. We had cocktails, oysters, chowder, salmon and the vegetarian halloumi. All were delicious. We had to leave or we might have gotten dessert! read more

What a LOVELY place! Came for a leisurely brunch, and this place did not disappoint. The ambience is classy, but casual. The hotel itself is well appointed, and everything from the fixtures to the texture of the booths is pleasant and welcoming. Our service was outstanding, attentive, but not overly invasive. The bloody Mary was perfect, the food was delicious. A stand out was a little onions on the oysters and the Benedict was wonderful. Would love to return for another meal. Sidenote, on Sundays, you are perfectly positioned to leave brunch and indulge in the beautiful farmers market right across the street! read more

5 stars for the service and ambiance, 1.5 stars for the food. Beautifully decorated restaurant with gorgeous lighting, plants, and seating. Service was excellent. Both my husband and I thought the food was terrible. I got the fried chicken which was tasty, except for the parts covered in a sticky, sweet and spicy peanut goop. It came with horrid pickles and collard greens. Absolutely terrible. Also the polenta left a lot to be desired. My husband got the pork loin. It was also pretty terrible and had a weird almost minty flavor to it. The purple sweet potato mash was gritty and flavorless. The best thing we had was the hummus, but most of the flavor came from the few olives on top. The bread didn't go with the hummus at all and had burnt bits all around the crust. Was decent bread, just not with this item, in my opinion. My husband ordered an old fashion, he said it was just so so. This was $118 with the tip. Overall, just not good that we would want to try again. read more
