Delicious breakfast! I had the Hash Nash which is a play on corned beef. It was made with beef cheeks and had a hint of horse radish cream. The potatoes were also crispy. So good! The food was delicious at this hotel restaurant, but other aspects left a little to be desired. We had a reservation for 4 at 6pm and had requested a booth in the bar. In all honesty, the hostess staff told us they could not guarantee a booth. However, when we arrived, we were told that all the booths were full, and we were seated in the main dining room. I walked into the bar to take a look at the booths and one was completely empty. Disappointing. The menu was creative and had something for everyone from meat eaters to vegetarians and vegans. Shout out to server Sierra, who was friendly and happy to make recommended and answered all of our questions with a smile. The setting is open and a little loud, but being in the National Hotel, the aesthetic flowed well with the hotel decor. The disappointing part of my party's experience was the fact that service took sooo long. We ordered an appetizer which came out with our main entrees. And drinks that we ordered before any of the food came out, came long after our meal had been served and only after we we asked what had happened to them. We were told that the bar was very busy and that's what delayed our drinks. However, with such a popular hotel, you think they would plan for this in advance. My friend and I were in town for the holiday weekend and also my bday, so we decided to come here for my bday dinner. We started with drinks, and I got the Root 66, while my friend got a beer. We also decided to share all our dishes, so we got: *Cauliflower - I didn't love this, it was a bit over charred for me and had a little bit of a weird taste to it *Tomato and peach with whipped pita - this was amazing. I am not a huge tomato person, but the produce was so fresh and flavorful that I could have eaten just that and been happy! *Salmon - this was delicious! *chowder - I got a cup of this and I loved it, it was so flavorful and full of fish! *Olive oil cake - we finished with this and it was delicious, not too sweet. Have you ever went to an establishment where you feel like you didn't belong and weren't welcomed? well, this is the place for me! we went in on a saturday mid-morning/early afternoon while driving back to Sac. i picked this place based on the great yelp reviews on their food. however, that i was far from the actual truth. upon arrival, we weren't greeted right away which was our first indication. we stood there at the host station for about 5-10 minutes without acknowledgment. i assumed that they were busy and it seemed like there was only one waiter/server was present so we were patient. As we were waiting, we noticed at least 4 empty tables so my daughter was guessing with my husband which table we will be seated at. Each empty table was clean and had the desired lighting from the sunlight which made the room felt brighter which was a great ambiance. However, when the host acknowledge us, he didn't sit us in the main room but put us in the dark backroom with a reserved belted off section. I didn't think too much into it but I was wrong. We then proceeded to wait another 10 more minutes before getting any service. The bartender came by, stared me down with the disgruntled face, and said," why are you here? what do you want?" He then proceeded to take our orders and informed us that he was the bartender and no one told him that we were seated here. At this time, the bar section wasn't even busy at all. While we waited for our food, my family and I contemplated whether or not to walk out due to the poor service and the timing of the food which took forever. When the food finally arrived it was horrible. Everything was either too salty or too sour. I had ordered the blueberry french toast with light mascarpone and lemon curd. The blueberries sauce was extremely sour. Hubby had the hash nash which was extremely salty. He didn't even ask how my hubby liked his eggs cooked. the potatoes were good. Back at Lola, and this was one of the best meals I've ever had! I ordered Mary's roasted chicken with polenta, roasted carrots, and my partner got the steak frites with chimichurri sauce. It was our first night in town and we wanted to go someplace a bit fancy with family and this is where we ended up. It's a lovely location in the historic District of Nevada city in the old national hotel with everything done beautifully inside. Overall, we enjoyed our visit, but seemed to all have some issues with the food, unfortunately. The shrimp cocktail disappointed all four of us, both with limp shrimp and odd cocktail sauce it was in. The brussels sprouts were a bit flaky and didn't seem to have much substance to them. I had the chicken and it was pretty good, although nothing to write home about. I think the best thing on our table was the salmon entrée, which was reported as very delicious, although a bit underdone. Our server was excellent and helpful throughout the evening. My brunch was truly delightful as I ate a satisfyingly light meal. My granola in organic yoghurt was well presented when served, reasonably priced at $12 and a was decent portion in size. I was honestly surprised to learn that the restaurant did not have an espresso machine to make a cappuccino and the unlimited drip-coffee seemed a little pricey for $5. Although the serving staff were very friendly and accommodating, because I waited at least 20 minutes for the yoghurt parfait, the service was quite slow. The porcini pasta was absolutely wonderful and the salmon was seared well. We also got the French onion soup and it was delicious. The ribeye however came out burnt... fully blackened and tough. I asked for medium rare and it was, however I could not chew through the first three bites. We also ordered the lamb shank and unfortunately that was also mediocre. Every time I visit my friends in grass Valley I look forward to eating out at the local restaurants. This is my first time having breakfast at Lola's in the National Exchange Hotel and Bar in Nevada City. It's a good idea to make reservations on weekends. Service was an A+. Our group of four had four different dishes and all were reported to be excellent as well as mine which was the Benedict with Niman Ranch ham. I like to use Tabasco on my hashbrowns, and they brought me their homemade substitute chili sauce, which was fabulous, and on the milder side of Tabasco. The eggs were poached perfectly, and the hashbrowns were to die for, crispy, flavorful, and not at all oily. Portion sizes left no one hungry. If you really have a sweet tooth their French toast is to die for. There's free parking in the back of the hotel. Enjoy! read more

The overall experience was fine. Not bad, just not great. The staff were pleasant and helpful but seemed a little inauthentic in their manner. The menu was fairly limited and the food we had, while good, was, again, not in any way exceptional. I'm a connoisseur of macaroni and cheese and I did enjoy Lola's, served with a bacon jam, but it wouldn't coax me back. The roasted chicken was fine but the polenta was dull. The budino was not a familiar dessert to me, but seemed excessively sweet. I do love the ambiance of Lola and would definitely return to linger over a cocktail or two, especially on a dreary day, but with so many options in the area, it may be a little while before I circle back for a meal. read more

It was also pretty terrible and had a weird almost minty flavor to it. The purple sweet potato mash was gritty and flavorless. The best thing we had was the hummus, but most of the flavor came from the few olives on top. The bread didn't go with the hummus at all and had burnt bits all around the crust. What a LOVELY place! Came for a leisurely brunch, and this place did not disappoint. The ambience is classy, but casual. The hotel itself is well appointed, and everything from the fixtures to the texture of the booths is pleasant and welcoming. Our service was outstanding, attentive, but not overly invasive. What a gorgeous place! I've never taken so many photos of an interior (and bathroom) for inspiration before. Aside from the gorgeous atmosphere and bluegrass on a Monday night the food was delicious and service was amazing. Our waitress gave great guidance since it was hard to narrow down what we wanted. I'm confused by subpar or 3-star reviews, but we did come on a weekday night (which was still pretty busy!) The focaccia bread was the real MVP of the night and should be missed! Ceasar was great and the French onion soup was pretty good, but felt some regret not getting the chowder. This was a very promising spot and probably what we thought would become one of the highlights of our weekend trip here. We were really looking forward to dining at Lola in The National Exchange Hotel. But unfortunately, what we expected as a positive experience ended up in disappointment. I thought the vibe, the decor, was very different and appealing because of the history of this hotel, and it was honestly very beautiful. I would say food was not bad, but what made the overall experience bad was the wait time in-between each dish. I know this place is popular, so it's unfortunate that the kitchen couldn't manage the timing of each dish well. For appetizers and smaller dishes, we waited ~10-15 min in-between each, but our entree took more than 30 mins after the last share plate arrived.  Our server was very nice, but seemed pretty swamp. She was very straight to the point with her questions and comments, and we appreciate that. She also came to refill our hot water cups multiple times, so that was nice of her. I think we're fortunate to have had her.  As for food rating: - Oyster - 5/5. It was really fresh and bell peppers mignonette sauce paired really well with it. It added just a bit of a tanginess to it.  - Brussel Sprouts - 4/5. Really tasty! According to the menu they mixed it with a red Fresno ferment which, when we Googled said it was a hot sauce. We did not taste spicy at all. I feel like it had a very mild sweetness to it actually, but super flavorful and delicious. Just a tad oily, but this is great cooking inspiration!  - Lola Chowder - 3.5/5. Very hearty, very filling soup. Nicely paired it with a slice of seeded soda bread. You'll think that seeded bread is usually a bit more dense, but this was on the lighter side. The consistency of this chowder wasn't super thick, but it had plenty of ingredients mixed in - kinda chunky. Pretty good chowder, but kinda it gets saltier as you go through it.  - Panisse 3.5/5 - My first time trying a Chickpea Farinata, and it was interesting. I don't have a previous experience to compare it, but it looks similar to a Soy Marinated Tofu (the ones at dim sum restaurants). The outer layer is crispy, but doesn't quite stick to the inside, comes apart easily when you cut into it. I'm not sure how to describe it, but the consistency on the inside reminds me of something between a mousse and jello, but savory. The cashew cream was surprisingly very smooth and tasty, but there was just too much. Roasted veggies paired well, but I feel this entree was also a tad too salty.  Would I come back again? Definitely not. I wouldn't want to wait so long in-between dishes. I'm still glad I tried this, but this is a one and done experience for me. If you happen to come across this place when it's looking less busy, maybe you'll have a better experience than we did. But definitely do not recommend coming here on a Saturday night. If you want to give this place a try, maybe try your luck on weekday nights! read more
