Painting area

I planned a girls day with a few friends over the weekend. Java & Clay doesn't accept reservations, it's a first come first serve basis but they do have a lot of tables and seats for plenty of guests. They have coffee, tea, and other drink options to order while you're painting your item. The prices are by each clay item, which are clearly labeled next to each display. The cost of paint and the time to paint are included. You're not timed which is nice. They have a wide selection of clay items including coffee mugs, plates, planters and pots, cute animal figurines, garden gnomes and mushrooms, even holiday edition items. They have small, medium, and large pieces available. You let the café rep know you're there to paint and they will find you a table to sit at with the brushes and water set up. You pick your piece, grab your paints, and begin working on your masterpiece. Once you're finished they will come to your table to get your information for payment and pick up details. It's about a week or so for them to heat and glaze it your piece. It's a great, unique café to grab coffee and create with friends or family, while getting to bring a piece of your experience home with you as a memory. I think they will ship if you're not local to the area as well.

Wow! What a cool concept! This place is pure brilliance. A coffee shop PLUS clay art painting shop. And you can do both at once! At first, I thought, oh it's a coffee shop in the front and they hold clay painting classes in the back or have a clay art shop in the back. Not quite. It's both! Every table has all the supplies for the clay on the table - you can sit anywhere, just grab your clay model of choice (they have tons), and get your paint on WHILE having your coffee and delicious treats. This place was packed and rightly so. Yet you could still easily find a place to sit and it was so fantastically casual and fun and spirited. Lovely staff at the cafe counter. Delicious pastries. Good coffee.

Mashup coffee shop with snacks and clay art! You can drink well prepared coffee drinks, eat pre-packaged food and snacks, and finally get your art on. Pre made clay items are available for you to paint. Options and prices vary from small to large. I saw one that was 100$+. You paint your choice with their supplies and guidance. It's fun and well organized. A week later they finish the firing process, and it's ready for pick-up. Very good customer service in both areas.

Wow I am not artistic but these guys help you feel like maybe you are!!! My grandkids thankfully are artistic and love coming here to create wonderful things! We always have a little snack/lunch with some coffee and smoothies. Great thing on all of our rainy northwest days!

I love the vibe here! Coffee and plants are a great combination! I got a simple latte and the team made it super fast. It was delicious! It was cool checking out all the great things for sale inside. Great location, great service, great coffee!

Amazing coffee, great atmosphere, and tons to choose from for crafting your next piece! My husband and I absolutely loved it here. Got the oatmilk latte and it was so well made. They also offer spirits, ciders, and some craft beers. Service was quick and very friendly. Kelly was amazing and taught us how to begin our painting spree.

This is a cute cafe to drop by. It also has painting and art options in a separate room (which I haven't tried while visiting Seattle), that look really fun. I see both adults and kids here. The sound is generally average - usually people are talking and they also have music playing overhead. It's not a quieter space and it's also not too loud. Service is very friendly. They are conversational and open with you, which is great. The drinks felt cozy, and good enough for my taste. I would stop by again. It isn't spectacular, to the point I miss Java or have a craving for it - it's more of a homey and comfortable feel with drinks and baked goods available. Easy parking in the area on the street or by the harbor. The cafe is located by some nice walks and views of Downtown Gig Harbor.

Worst "milkshake" ever. Watery. Hard to believe there was more than a tablespoon of ice cream. Inattentive service too.

The teacher was so encouraging, and greatly took time and consideration in answering questions and offering the best feedback. She has a genuine love for her artisanal work and it mirrors in the way she treats her students. Thank you for such a wonderful representation of small businesses in Tacoma. You can immediately tell that the owner puts extra care and intention into everything she offers. I had the chance to talk with her about some of the pieces and materials, and I really appreciated that many of the options are local -- always a big plus in my book. One detail that really stood out to me (and that I learned sets this studio apart from others in the area) is that she also finishes the bottoms of the pieces. That extra attention ensures everything fires properly in the kiln and helps the pieces last longer. It's such a thoughtful touch that shows how much pride she takes in her work. I also loved that all services are included in the pricing, so there are no surprise fees later on. That alone made the experience feel relaxed and stress-free. The selection is fantastic -- from small knickknacks to decorative wall pieces, to dishes like plates and mugs. I genuinely think anyone could find something here that fits their style. And best of all, you're not rushed at all. You could honestly spend the whole day there and no one would mind. While we were there, another woman came in with pottery she hadn't finished from a previous session. She set up with her tablet and headphones and worked quietly for a couple of hours -- it was really cool to see that flexibility. If you don't finish in one visit, you can pack up and come back later, which I love. Turnaround time was also impressive. From when we submitted our pieces to when we got them back, it was only about a week or two at most -- much quicker than I expected. And the results were beautiful. I'm so happy with how everything turned out and can't wait to come back again for another occasion. Highly recommend this studio to anyone looking for a creative, welcoming, and thoughtfully run experience.

She is 8 years old and so when I called around, one of the places I called recommended this place. They offer a "try out the wheel" class, as well as multiple classes. The try it out class is $60 ish and allows you to work with an instructor to make a bowl or a cup. Then once it dries, you can come and paint it. Sounded like a good deal. I really wanted to love this place and I think if you go for the painting of ceramics it would be fine, but I would not recommend this place for the classes, especially for kids. I took my daughter and my niece and like I said, it was their very first time. When we arrived, we were greeted by the lady who ended up being our instructor. She seemed kind of low key rude but didn't think too much about it. However, as the lesson progressed, she seemed kind of annoyed with the girls. She didn't yell or anything but her mannerisms and the way she spoke came off as what the girls said "rude" and my daughter said "I wanted to cry". Not really the experience I was hoping for them, especially since this was an early Christmas gift and I would hope they would have fun. Maybe it was just the instructor we got. When they were finished the instructor came out of the wheel room and rolled her eyes while passing the other ladies working. Like I said, I wanted to really like this place, and I think my opinion of it would be different had we only come in to paint ceramics. I recently did a wheel class somewhere else and as an adult I think this place would be fine but it isn't ideal for kids.

There are also instructions on the wall on the steps you need to take to decorate your piece and there are labels everywhere to make sure you know what you're doing. When you first walk in, you pick a piece of pottery out to decorate/paint. There are a ton of items to select from including bowls, mugs figurines, and plates. I picked a little bowl to paint and pulled up my Pinterest board for inspiration. I went to go pick out my colors and they all had swatches on them with 1-3 coats of paint to show you how it looks when fired. They also have precision tip paint bottles (in the same selection as the regular paint) for little details and stamps. They provide you with assortment of paint brushes, decorated pieces for inspiration and different foam applicators for ombre looks. They also give you ceramic palettes and a water mug to clean off your paintbrushes. After you're done with decorating, you clean up your items and put them in the correct compartments for the staff to wash. So we celebrated 5 birthdays, 12 of us came to paint ceramics, we brought snacks, and drinks. If you didn't have any snacks, this place has snacks and candy you can purchase. Since we were a large group we took the upstairs level. Not easy for people with knee problems, but we managed. So we set up our snacks, Italian sodas, and birthday cake, then we went downstairs to choose what we wanted to paint. Items range anywhere from 20.00 and up. One of the birthday girls had to bring her granddaughter and she had a blast. Another young gal took her newborn and carried him in a pouch while she painted. Staff was very helpful. We had a color chart to choose our colors, we told them what we wanted and they brought to us and replenished paint when needed. Each station had water, sponges, brushes, lazy Susan, and a tray for your paint. We held the space for two hours. Perfect timing because they closed at 5pm on Sunday. They will glaze our projects, and next week one of us will pick it up and bring to everyone. Now we want to go back and take a pottery class. Everything is so affordable including the classes. So glad this one exists, because the one we used to go to in Auburn to pain canvas closed down permanently. I posted a photo of the wall of ceramics to choose from. I'm used to more of a selection of pottery to paint, but there were still definitely something for everyone, but it might have skewed more to items for kids. Prices were higher than I've seen at other places, but this is more of a mom and pop type shop so I'm glad to pay it. After you pick out your pieces you are given a tiny pallette for your colors and you have to write down your color choices for the worker to dole out your paint to you. I didn't love this. I can see how this is helpful from kids using too much paint or making a mess. but with three adults it was a bit annoying to have to keep asking for more paint refills. We weren't given any direction on what to do. Two of us had done this before but one of us hadn't so we had to be the one to tell him to wipe the dust off your piece, make sure to do three coats, etc. When we got our finished pieces back, I was a little surprised that the entire piece wasn't glazed. I'm used to every side being glazed including the bottom. One of us painted a turtle and he left part of the face blank, and that part didn't get glazed which was pretty weird.
