Japengo is located within the property of the Hyatt Regency (Maui) You really are coming here for the ambiance. I highly recommend that you make a reservation at least a month or two in advance. A lot of restaurants within the mega resorts book up pretty fast. I had a reservation for four at 6pm. If I could do it again, I'd recommend a 6:30 or 7pm reservation during the summertime. In either case, we were able to enjoy dinner until the sunset. You can't beat the view and all that you're surrounded by. Our waiter was nice enough to snap a few awesome photos for our group. We had a few different kinds of their special sushi rolls. They weren't terrible. But weren't all that either. It's Maui. They were expensive, as expected. I'd say try it for the ambiance. If you're coming here and expecting amazing sushi, well this ain't it. Sushi 5/10. Ambiance 10/10. Service 7/10. When I return to Maui, I'd probably return for the vibes but maybe just cocktails no food. read more

Japengo was a really nice restaurant and provided for a really nice evening for us. We were hesitant to go there because of the prices, but we love Japanese food and we were staying at the Hyatt Regency so we figured it was okay to splurge one night and eat at the restaurant at our resort! We weren't disappointed. It's located in a really cool spot on the resort so you're overlooking the beach and pool area. We initially were being put in the back where we didn't have a view at all, and we asked to be in the front and they did put us over there, but seemed somewhat reluctant. We did have two young kids with us, not sure if that's why. Anyway they ended up putting us up there, we didn't have to wait long. John was our waiter and he was great. We ordered the lettuce cups and they were so devious. John got us extra lettuce for that at no cost. It was a ton of meat, so the initial lettuce they gave wasn't nearly enough. We also got the miso soup, which was $10 each. They were super small, but tasty. Not sure I'd pay for that again. I ordered avocado and cucumber sushi and my husband got the Rainbow Sushi. It was basically California Roll topped with different types of fish/shellfish. I don't remember what exactly they were, but one of them was shrimp. He said he'd order it again, it was really good! This was definitely a much better restaurant experience than Umalu, the other restaurant on the resort site. If we stayed here again, we'd definitely come back to Japengo! I would recommend making a reservation if you can, we got lucky and got seated quickly, but I can imagine it not being that way normally! read more

We visited Japengo every time we are in Maui and pleasantly surprised by its quality. Each roll is filled & fresh. Each roll is worth every penny. However, we tried the scallops, which yes were tasty, not really worth the $40+ unless you LOVE scallops. We will be back to try something new again! We ordered the California roll it tasted like store bought crab mix with sesame seeds on/around it. Also we ordered the Jidor chicken tasty but overcooked. Also ordered the spicy tuna rolls and hamachi sashimi. They plated all on 1 plate, unbeknownst to me I ended up being allergic to the hamachi. I have never been to a sushi restaurant where they combine different orders. Unsafe. We also ordered the Fried rice it was good but on the oily side. Lastly we ordered the shaking beef rice noodles?? Not sure they were rice noodles? No flavor and dry beef, I don't remember shaking beef to taste like that? Not sure if we'll ever come back. Great views but seriously mediocre food. We love Japengo! The menu has lots of great dishes that you don't find elsewhere. We had the Korean Seafood pancake and the fried rice as well as a sushi roll. All were excellent. Bert was our server and he was great! The only downside is with the remodel there are a lot of tables out in the open. We came here for dinner because we wanted Asian food. We ordered the blacked ahi tuna roll, curry dusted calamari, pork belly bao, mahi mahi, and fried rice. The fried rice was a huge portion! I love that the seafood udon stir fry was served hot! However, the lobster and shrimp was overcooked and for that price you expect the meal to be perfect!!! I am staying at the resort and had Dinner at Japengo this week. Food was great as always. My complaint is the fact that our server placed a screaming hot plate directly in front of my ten month old son, who was in a high chair and he burnt his hand so bad it started to blister. I notified the server right away and all I got was a "my bad", I then asked to speak to the manager whom wasn't aware of the situation(I expected the server to at least let the manager know about the situation) and all I got was well what do you want me to do call the fire department? Not is he okay? Can I get you some ice? After dinner I went to the front desk as I still felt like I was brushed off and left my info for the food and beverage manager to call me and they never did. I really look forward to eating at Sonz and Japengo when I stay at the resort but I will take my business elsewhere. read more

It's been since pre - Covid that we have enjoyed the views, lounge and Japengo! Naturally, we were a little disappointed when we arrived to barricades and construction, which marred one of the restaurant's top feature, its panoramic view of the ocean and Lahaina. Another disappointment is that construction impacted the live entertainment which was usually in the afternoons through early evenings. Not to worry, we were told that it would be a few more weeks to completion. We were greeted by the always friendly and efficient service from the hostesses, bartenders, and servers. We enjoyed a well paced dinner, which started with edamame and calamari. Our dinners were served family style in great portions for four people. I especially enjoyed that our server Katyana, offered have our 16 oz ribeye cut by the chefs. Our ribeye was cooked to order perfectly - I would have preferred the ginger demi-glaze was served on the side, garlic noodles with just the right amount of garlic, and our sushi rolls made with seafood so fresh that I could seemingly taste the ocean! We topped it off with fresh malasadas served with chocolate, vanilla mac nut and Lilikoi dipping sauces. We cannot wait to return to enjoy Sunset happy hours and music in the lounge ! read more

We made reservations two months before flying to Maui for the holidays. Japengo does not participate on OpenTable, you'd book directly through the restaurant's website. The day before our reservation,  we received an email to confirm our reservation. This was our first visit to Japengo so we got there early to find parking. There is self parking on the left, prior to the Hyatt lobby. You enter the lot by taking a ticket. Check-in was quick and we were seated once everyone in our party arrived(give yourself extra time to walk from self-parking to the restaurant). Once you get into the lobby, turn right towards the ocean and you'll see a bar and the check-in counter. The menu offered a good mix of appetizers,  entrees, and sushi. We got the Crispy Pork Belly Bao Buns, Karaage Chicken,  Chirashi Don, Kauai shrimp, Grilled Scallops,  Grilled Local Fish, and Japengo Fried Rice. The Karaage chicken were crispy and the Bao Buns were tasty. Liked the wasabi crema on the chicken,  would have liked a side of crema for dipping. Happy with both dishes. Our entrees arrived and we didn't realize we needed to order a side dish to accompany the Grilled Local Fish, Scallops,  and Kauai shrimp. Ahh! Our server didn't prompt us to order side dishes when we gave our order.  When our server dropped off the other half of our entrees, we ordered a side of jasmine rice and side of sweet potato hash. The rice and hash arrived pretty quickly so we could enjoy it with our entrees. The Chirashi Don had a good amount of fish and a large serving of rice. I wish the sushi rice served in the Chirashi Don was more seasoned. A few pieces of fish were slightly grilled- I really enjoyed that textural difference. This was a beautiful bowl of fish and I ate ALL the fish. The scallops were HUGE! The butter-yaki sauce was flavorful. If we make it back, I'd order that dish. The grilled fish was Mahi Mahi and it was a good size filet. The Kauai shrimp with white wine sauce were big prawns. Filling and tasty dish. The fried rice was good. We completed our meal with a Pineapple Upside Down cake and a Kaanapali pie. The Upside Down cake was served at room temperature. I prefer warm desserts. The slice was a smaller serving than one we had at another resort a couple weeks ago. We really liked the Kaanapali pie- made with banana. 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill for our large group.  Self-parking at Hyatt's restaurant lot cost $14 for the couple hours we were at dinner. Overall, positive experience. The view is amazing. read more

They're not joking, BEST Mai Tai on this this stretch of Maui! Booked it for the sunset, couldn't make it and they were extremely accommodating. Our server was exceptional. She was very well informed and knowledgeable about many things around the island and the resort itself. She even told us about the animals we could see. The scallops and the toro sushi were the top 2 dishes for us. They were a few that did not hit the mark for us. But in all honesty we were there for the Mai Tais. My wife and I have dined at Japengo for over 12 years. Always something we look forward to. However, the visit last year set us back. Japengo was now part of Hyatt. All the usual staff were gone, but we rolled with it. Now this year, and we went twice on our vacation, so disappointing. So let's start with the sushi. We ordered spicy tuna rolls with LESS rice. Many of the common rolls are made well in advance, so we have learned a hack by ordering less rice. Typicall = freshly made. At both dinners the tuna smelled fishy. The toro was on, but not served well. The uni was ok, but portion was very small. In summary not impressed Staff. No follow up after we received our food. Zero. The second night we were at the bar. The staff were all loud and joking around the north end of the bar. I mean loud. I gave a couple the look and they sheepishly moved away. So unprofessional. My wife had to ask for, not just one, but two cleanings of our counter top. Sticky and tons of small bugs flying/crawling on the counter and on our food. Never have we had this experience before. The guy even admitted they are having a problem controlling the small crawling bugs. So gross. My advice, steer clear of Japengo. So sad as this once yummy regular place is now not sterile or yummy. I think the health dept needs to do a deep dive here. We will no longer be frequently dining there. read more

We were unsure of what to have and her recommendations were on point. Started off with Clams and poke, I had the scallops and hubby had the rib eye, followed by the insane dessert. I can not rave enough about the food!!! The view was also amazing!! I have friends going In September and I've already told them they MUST go and they also have to be in Chantrells area! We had the pleasure of staying at the Hyatt Regency during our stay in Maui and ended up eating here two nights because the sushi and service was outstanding! They had many delicious items on the menu but we couldn't bring ourselves to order anything other than sushi! (and dessert). The sushi was AMAZING. Generous-sized rolls with delicious, fresh fish. Mmmm. The location and view are lovely. The service both nights, including the hostesses, was outstanding. There is a parking lot for the hotel or valet as well. Better yet, if you are staying nearby/Whalers Village, hop on the free trolley! I do suggest making reservations. The only room for improvement is to offer a larger selection of sushi and although the Ka'anapali Pie was delicious, it was so frozen that it was too difficult to eat and therefore, enjoy. Suggest maybe letting it rest before serving. Oh! and I wish they had been open for lunch or at least offered sushi midday :) but that is just a *wish*. Overall, I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend dining here if you are staying anywhere in the area. The only other place I liked was Monkeypod in Whalers Village for lunch. And, since Japengo is only open for dinner.... well, no conflict there!! Honestly I would have eaten here a 3rd time if it had been up to me :) Enjoy!! read more

I would give Japengo more than 5 stars if I could. It is pricey but the food is tasty, unique and exquisite. In a 7-day vacation, we ate here twice. Our first night we both had scallops and we each had a salad. I can't eat dairy so the chef made me a special non-dairy dipping sauce which was incredible. Our server was attentive without hovering. The view was beautiful. We ordered a takeout dinner our last night; two salads and two sushi rolls. Locally grown produce and freshly caught fish. Just thought it was important to get this out there....i know some people are experiencing challenging times at Japengo. We have been going here for nearly 10 years and NEVER had a meal that did not meet or exceed our expectations. We were here August 21st and had 8pm reservations and requested earlier, like 7pm and they were so accommodating. We had to wait at the bar for 20 min or so and got to know Lance who was SO appreciative that we were here and supporting west maui. He was awesome. As promised we were seated early and had an awesome meal with Otoro, Kampachi and Sake...SO fresh and good. Also service (Chantrelle???) was so attentive. The Udon noodle dish with shrimp and lobster was amazing. Will come back here again and again. Looking forward to seeing the new patio but good job making the current one work.
