Summary: Their 120 point inspection is flawed. A pre-purchase inspection is needed to find any major issues. They also give incentives for positive 5 star reviews, which is really unethical. Note: This mostly details my purchasing experience with them from half a year ago as of writing. I purchased a 2020 Outback (~98k miles) from JCC, but before that I took it to two different Subaru service shops for inspections. It revealed a major flaw about how Japanese Car Connection preps their used cars for sale. The most serious issue: within seconds, both shop mechanics found that the cam carrier was leaking. This is a repair that costs thousands in labor hours alone (I think an average quote is in the ballpark of $4000). So how come JCC's "120 point" inspection didn't catch it? I asked, and the owner told me they detail the cars before inspecting them (although he also said not necessarily always), which includes hosing down the engine. Because the engine was hosed down, the cam carrier leak was longer visible to the JCC mechanics during their inspection, and that it took however long it's been driving since then to reveal that leak. This practice of hosing the engine down before their 120 point inspection is so incredibly flawed towards consumers since in this case, it concealed an extremely expensive repair, not to mention that issues like cam carrier leaks aren't uncommon! A cynical interpretation of this event is that they're fine with these missing flaws before selling to customers, but that conclusion is up to you. Some minor issues that both mechanics made note of during inspection: - The coolant was low: little to no coolant in the reservoir (and that day was very hot outside). One mechanic noted it could be an indicator of their poor quality of service considering how simple of an oversight this is. - Some cosmetic issues that JCC fixed before purchase, you'll just need to find them yourself since it seems that they won't care otherwise. One of my issues was incredibly hard to miss! - This one is debatable regarding if it's an issue: JCC uses worm gear clamps which are not Subaru OEM parts. When asked, the JCC owner told me they're from O'Rileys and virtually the same quality, just at a substantially lower price than from official Subaru ones. Opinions seem to differ between shops, only one of the two mechanics truly disliked it. A possible concern is that they may require retightening due to heat cycles. Make your own conclusion with this information. Japanese Car Connection agreed that the cam carrier is leaking and that they would fix it before purchase. However, they asked for a non-refundable deposit, which is 10% of the car's price, or else they wouldn't get around to fixing it anytime soon. I don't think that this practice is uncommon for used dealerships, but it warrants mentioning since, at that moment, it felt like an uncomfortable pressure sales move. Ideally, I would like to inspect the aftermath of their repair job without committing so much non-refundable money to have it done earlier, but you may also understand that they have to prioritize work on their already-purchased vehicles. Here's another thing: they also offered me a gift card for a 5 star review. Here's the exact quote for from their email: "if you take the time to leave us a 5 star google review, we will send you a $25 gas gift card" That is incentivizing a positive review, which is...pretty unethical and scummy. I believe this details most of my experience with them. If you take away one thing from this review, it's to go get their cars inspected beforehand! Or better yet, go to a dealership that can actually catch these flaws themselves. read more

Buyer Beware! As soon as car passed emissions the after market non-Colrado appoved catalytic converter malfunctioned. The cam shaft was incorrectly installed and is leaking 3 quarts of oil a week. Be sure to have your own mechanic look over any cars purchased from this dealership. The warantee does not cover much of anything. read more

I wanted to give this dealer a high review but unfortunately poor bed side manners and the owners words "I don't care if you give me a bad review" lead to me to give an honest negative review. Car was sold at a good price and almost everything was in great condition. Some minor cosmetic damage and frost damage on one mirror. The real problem was third day of getting the car the engine didn't start and turns out there was a taped up cable connecting to the battery my mechanic and I missed. I brought it back to the dealer and owner was gone and his mechanic didn't even want to spend 5 minutes to check my starter or alternator. I called the next day to let the owner know I got a discount and was only 150 dollar fix but he wouldn't budge to even partially compensate or apologize and just said you have a limited warranty. Attached is the cable they left on the battery all taped and rusted. Also showing new part installed with no tape. EDIT: Now having the car longer I have the same issue as Stephanie. Transmission issue which seems illegally the dealer tried to cover up by reseting the check engine light. Warranty barely covered it all. read more

He would give me vague terms and then say "No this doesn't work, try again" ad nauseam. This is a belated review but I wanted to put it online anyhow. In 2020, I had been looking to buy a car for 8 months. I had done everything I could imagine to find the right fit, and I had done all of the research on what I was looking for and what my budget could handle. I stopped by Japanese Car Connection in the afternoon of a day of searching and was thinking I wouldn't find anything. After test driving several really great quality cars that were a bit out of my budget, I almost gave up and decided I wouldn't find what I was looking for. However, in the corner of their lot there was the most perfect car and after a test drive, I knew I had to take it home with me! I loved that my car had been worked on by Subaru specialists before I bought it, and it had all of the necessary work that a Subaru requires at about 100k miles. It had brand new head gaskets, timing chain, water pump, and clutch. I knew that these parts had been installed correctly because of the mechanic services they offered and I knew that I was getting a fair price because I had done so much searching before finding the right fit. I went in to Japanese car connection already preapproved. My husband had bought a car from them 6 months prior and had a seamless experience. We went in to sign paperwork after both leaving work early and were there for 4 hours until everything was good to go. By the time we left it was rush hour so it took over an hour to get home. When I'm about home in my new car I get a call from them that they forgot to give me my temp tag and I need to come back?!!?! I called back and said I wouldn't be able to come back and get the temp tag until a couple days later on my day off. I also emailed the girl I was originally working with about the experience and she also told me I needed to get an emissions ASAP, which was undisclosed at the time I bought the car. Fast forward almost 2 weeks: I get a call from them that my husbands name is incorrect on ALL loan documentation, and they need us to come down and sign everything AGAIN! We had just left town for vacation so weren't able to go down and sign. They ended up mailing the paperwork as that was the only option I gave as a way for us to do it, and after sending the signed paperwork to us and sending back I received ANOTHER call that they needed proof of residency ASAP. They stated that they had just received a 3rd notice regarding that specific document, yet the first I had heard of it was the day prior. All in all, what should have been a seamless process that turned into a very disappointing experience as I'm still getting calls from them almost a month later to fix things that should have been taken care of early on. I want to save whoever is reading this their time and money by NOT going to this place. Terrible customer service and shady ownership/management. A little over a month ago I was in dire need of getting a new car for work and stumbled upon this place as they had exactly what I was looking for, a 2018 Subaru forester. It drove fine when I test drove it but there was many underlying issues with the car that I did not have the knowledge to inspect myself, such as extremely low treading on the tires and issues with the mechanics on the trunk. I was desperate for a new vehicle and and went ahead and made the purchase, stupid decision on my end. 2 weeks after I purchased the car, my tire exploded while I was driving home from work luckily no one was hurt or injured, but when I called and told the company about it, the owner basically said tough luck we don't fix tires, then a week later the trunk started having issues opening and closing (trunk is controlled by motors that open and close itself, basically unusable now). I walked in to the office two weeks after this happened to complain again and was met by the owner with a sour attitude and immediately jumped on the defensive and asked "oh so your blaming me?" I'm not saying I was expecting a brand new car but over $1,000 in repairs 3 weeks after I purchased a car I didnt have the money for to begin with, is not what I had in mind. I also made this same review on google and it was immediately deleted by the owner, so don't trust those reviews. After carefully looking through this company's reviews on yelp I noticed a pattern, I'm not the only one this has happened to. This company does not do it's due diligence to make sure their customers are happy and driving home in a safe usable vehicle, just another sleezy used car salesman looking to make a quick buck. I haven't made a purchase here myself, but my wife bought a 2013 Outback last summer. I was present for the transaction as well as dealing directly with their staff in clearing up some SNAFUs with the title transfer from California (a process which took a long time and caused some stress, but admittedly they were not directly at fault for). While communication with JCC wasn't always optimal, in the end they resolved the issue and we have a solid vehicle that has had very few issues thus far. JCC was helpful and very reasonably priced when we needed some minor repairs and replacements after the 90-day warranty had elapsed, which was cool. I went to Japanese Car Connection because I found a listing on Craigslist for a car that I wanted that seemed to be in good shape at a good price. My good friend took me to look at the car and the sales guy was rude to my friend, mentioning multiple times how he hates Ford products including after my friend mentioned that he loves his classic Ford Bronco, that he drove to the appointment. I brushed it off and looked at the car which not only appeared to be in very good shape but the dealer said that they put in a fresh engine and did some work on it with new timing belt, water pump and head gaskets. This to me made the car a very good deal. We did a test drive and everything seemed excellent. I wrote a check for the car and took it home. Two days later I noticed a tiny bit of steam coming out of the hood. The next day there was more steam and I could smell coolant. I opened up the hood to find the the top of the radiator was cracked. I called and talked to the same sales guy who said that "yeah that happens. Bring it in and we will take care of it for you". Considering that the car was supposed to have just been worked on and had a 30 day warranty I made the appointment to drive the car there to have them do the right thing and fix it. I had to wait a week to get it in and when I did the same sales guy said that the mechanic would get right on it for me and it wouldn't be much of a wait. I went to have breakfast and was called by the mechanic telling me that the radiator was in fact broken and it would cost me $275 plus tax to fix. I said that it should be a warranty repair and he said the warranty doesn't cover things that break after I buy the car. I asked if it would cover an engine or transmission that failed a week after buying it and he said "No". I went to retrieve my car and spoke to a woman, no sale guy around this time and told her that I was very upset and why. I explained that a radiator is a very simple repair and that I had told the sale guy the problem and he didn't treat the issue on the phone as if it was an out of warranty problem. Her response was "it's a used car, what do you expect?" I said that it's insane to have a warranty if they won't repair an obviously faulty part. "It's a limited warranty" was her reply. She also agreed with the mechanic that a broken engine or transmission one week after purchase was essentially just bad luck but she's tell the owner of my comments. Even though she could see that I was upset if she cared at all about their reputation she could have compensated me with say half price on the repair but instead her attitude was one of total cold indifference. When I initially drove away with the car, which I like a lot, I was willing to give them a good review despite the insulting sales guy but after this? These are the people who give used car sales people the horrible reputation that we all hear. read more

Do not waste your time and your money on this awful scam company!! Every step of the of buying this lemon was terrible and the owner is exactly what you would expect from a slimy, rude used car dealer. Their website states that the cars are mechanic inspected, mechanic serviced, and there is a 100 miles road test. This is obviously completely false because they would have noticed that the car was shifting hard between 3-4 gear going above 3k rpm which I didn't noticed until I had gotten on the highway for the first time. Either false claim of thorough inspection, or intentional SCAM. After two thorough inspections by two different mechanics, they told me that the transmission needs to be replaced and to get a transmission worth buying it will cost me between $3,000-$4500. The limits warranty only covers $1500 of a transmission. I contacted Japanese Auto to see what they could do considering they just sold me a lemon. I spoke to someone that got me in contact with the owner, Jay, which took days. There was not an ounce of concern or care about my issue. He said he would look for a used transmission for me with no guidance what so ever as to what would be best for me. So after 10 days of hearing nothing, I sent an email asking for a simple update. Waited two days, no response, so I called. He claimed he didn't get me email. Seemed shady. Then he started getting frustrated with me saying that I shouldn't be expecting an update "every day" and then got even more frustrated when I called back after I had done my own research and found a used transmission in Colorado with 129k miles. He said he already knew about that transmission and that he was trying to find me a cheaper one. Not once did he mention to me that a transmission with over 100k miles was a terrible idea. Yes I thought that myself but I don't know much about cars and I thought that I could trust the opinion of a "professional" but it's clear now that I was dealing with a fraud the entire time. For some reason I felt the need to apologize for potentially stepping on his toes but I didn't know what else to do because this man wasn't telling me anything. I just wanted some communication. So he said he would continue looking for a better/cheaper transmission. That was a week ago. In the meantime I spoke to a shop who listened to my issue, told me that they would inspect it for free again, and assured me that they would do everything they could to help me. They were kind and helpful every time I spoke to them. Apparently the warranty company is supposed to send someone to inspect the car and then they decide what the best thing to do it and will try to find me the best transmission that they can. Jay never told me this. The man that I was speaking to at the shop told me that I am his customer, that he cares, and he would never put a transmission in my car with over 100k miles and to not trust anyone who suggests it. Yes it might be more money for a better transmission but at least I know I'm not throwing my money away. Jay never once mentioned what he thought was best. He just wanted to not deal with me and my issue anymore. Still, for some ridiculous reason, I wanted to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. Any good business would have taken my situation and done everything they could to give me the fully functioning car that I expected when I paid cash for it. I get a voicemail today saying that he found a transmission with 126k miles and already had it shipped. All I asked was for some communication. He should have called me and discussed the very expensive waste of money that he wanted to buy me before having it sent. I told him that I had spoken to several other mechanics that highly advised me to stay away from a transmission with this high of mileage. He then threw fit saying that he couldn't deal with me anymore, to find someone else, and then hung up on me. As it turns out we came down to see a car we saw on the website, but it was being sold when we got there, and then found another 2001 Outback we liked even better. This time Jeff helped us and it was the same friendly, knowledgeable and helpful service. We test drove the car and decided to buy it. I really like that when Jeff got to the maintenance sheet he turned to my daughter and made sure she understood all the best practices for maintaining a Subaru (or really any car). The car has been running very well and after a few weeks we took it to our regular mechanic who looked it over and said it is in great shape mechanically (16 years old with 180k) and didn't see any work that needs to be done. This is long winded but worth the read! Just had a disappointing experience at Japanese Car Speciality. I called them at 9:00a on a Saturday verifying that the car we wanted was available and they yes it was. Excited about the car, My wife and I drove 1 hour to check it out. We were greeted by Jeff, very nice guy. He let us test drive the car. We really liked it and wanted to buy it. We opted for financing, he took all our information and sent out the application. THIS IS WHERE THE ISSUES STARTED. He said it would take between 30 min to one hour to get approved. He suggested we get lunch and call him after 30 min. We drove down the road maybe 10 min to grab lunch. So after 45 min we called, no answer, called three more times over 15 min span, no answer. We decided it would be best to head back, especially when he told us an hour max for the news on financing. As we pulled up, the car we wanted was being prepped for sale. We were both excited thinking we got approved and we're going to drive it home! We had to wait for Jeff while he helped another customer, and when he finished he said he didn't get any answers from financing yet and that he sold the car to someone else!!!! He acted sorry and asked if I wanted another car on the lot.....which there weren't. How could a business conduct themselves that way, not even calling my wife and I letting us know what was going on, nothing. We ended up wasting 5 hours of our day and being hugely disappointed. Excellent service! All the employees were super friendly and open about their cars, warranties, etc. They also replace a few things on all of the cars that come into their lot ($1500 value). I strongly recommend this business when looking for a used car. read more

Deceptive business practices. Company posted two prices for a vehicle to lure someone in, and then refused to honor the lower price that was actually listed on the vehicle description. Blames the issue on "the boss". Thanks, but no thanks. read more

If I could give a lower rating I would. This "business" is a horrible place to buy a car. I bought my car from them in December 2019, with the intention of moving to California because I am stationed in CA now, which I had explained to them and they understood and made it a pretty smooth process. The sales person (Bri) I was working with was very nice and helped me understand most of the paperwork and everything I was signing. The issues begin right after I bought the car. First off, they're a "no haggle" business, and they overcharge on their vehicles by a lot, Which you'd think you'd be getting a nicer car for paying more but that isn't the case. They claim they do a full inspection of the vehicle but I believe that's false. I got home and my car had little to no oil in it, I filled it before driving to California. Now, almost 4 months later and I learn that my car will be needing a full engine rebuild very soon, which will run up to $10,000 because it has metal particles in the oil indicating that the engine bearings are breaking down. And since I'm past my 3 month/3000 mile warranty, it's not covered. I called to try to get an extension on my warranty and they said "sure, I'll send you the information now" and never got a response back. They also said I'll have to get an inspection done before I can extend it so of course the damages won't be covered and I won't be able to extend the warranty The steering column was replaced at some point with an older 2008 model year steering column, which is also damaged and will need replaced. My brake pads also had been "inspected" before sale but after only two weeks they were worn bare and squeaking very loud. Which also was not covered by the warranty. There's a lot of other small cosmetic things like the front bumper was missing a few clips and the brackets that hold the bumper on were 80% broken. Lots of scratches and exterior paint damaged, potentially had a full or partial repaint done at some point which was covered by dirt and road salt when I bought it because it was snowing and dirty because they drive the cars that are for sale to their homes and on lunch breaks. Interior passenger door card has a broken elbow rest that I didn't notice when I looked at it. The Windshield was also cracked. Small issues that I can look past, but why charge so much for the car when it's beat up? Can't haggle though because they're a "no haggle" business. The worst issue I've had with them is my title and registration was supposed to be done within 30 days, and it took roughly 147 days to get it worked out, and i received my paperwork in may. They sent it to the dmv 3 or 4 times, and each time it got rejected because the paperwork was filled out wrong. The dealership claimed it was the DMVs fault. They did not want to take any responsibility for the issues I was having and blamed everyone but themselves. I asked to speak with the owner/manager directly multiple times and never got the chance. He runs a terribly shady business and I regret buying my vehicle from them 100%. Now I'm stuck with it. This place sucks, please don't buy your vehicle from them. read more

I really wish I could review about the quality of their cars. Unfortunately, I can't. They sold the car I made an appointment to look at an hour before I got there. No one called me, no one texted me, no one emailed me. I spent $40 on an Uber there and back for a car that they sold without letting me know they sold it. Very bad business. Very highly do not recommend. I called an hour before my scheduled appointment time and they said it would be ready. It's there right as a business to sell a car if someone walks through the door. The courteous thing to do is to call a potential customer who made an appointment five days ago and tell them it was sold. Discourteous, unprofessional, not to mention dangerous during a pandemic. I will never recommend them to anyone. read more
