Pleasantly surprised by the visit here. The dinner combo was great. Wasn't impressed by the miso soup and salad but that's not what I came for Overall would visit again!

D1 - Steak & chicken hibachi dinner
Kyla A.

Been coming to Japan Express for years. There is a drive thru for quick service and also seating inside. So glad it has stuck around for this long because previous restaurants in this location have shut down. Their hibachi and sushi are both so good :) love this place! IG: @insta.eatsfirst

Two vegetable rolls

This is one of those instances where half-stars would have come in handy as I would have scored Japan Express as a "3.5." However, I should point out that I've only used their drive thru services. Japan Express is located in a free-standing fast-food type building (I think it was a KFC in a former life) and they offer habachi-type as well as sushi fare and I've tried both. The habachi food (I tried the chicken entree) is just "okay," but the price is good for the large amount of food you get. The sushi (I should mention here that I don't eat seafood) comes as 8 pieces per roll. I usually order the vegetable roll - avocado and cucumber - as well as the chicken tempura roll (which has cream cheese in addition to the tempura chicken). I liked both rolls well enough to keep going back to Japan Express (plus, I'm lazy and the drive thru option is highly appealing to us lazy folk). Regarding the drive thru option - be prepared to wait 10 or 15 minutes for your order. I don't mind this now that I know this is the norm, but the first few times this happened, I was very impatient (and hungry). Also, no matter which staff member is manning the drive thru, their affect is pretty flat and there's no friendliness. They're not rude by any means, just kind of emotionless. At any rate, I'll continue to patron Japan Express because 1) they're close to my house, 2) the food is okay and 3) I'm laz so drive thru is appealing.

#17 Sashimi Combo
Kristy S.

This place is great for a quick sashimi fix for me and my daughter without spending lavishly. I get the #17 (16 pcs sashimi combo includes soup) and share it with my daughter and get my son the #77 (gyoza/dumplings) all for $20 lunch. That's not bad for the 3 of us considering a light lunch, that includes fresh fish. We come here often as it is close by our house. The owners are familiar with us so it's nice to see smiling faces serve you. Lunch specials for sushi and hibachi are great and cheap for serving size and meats. They serve pretty fast too, so if you're pressed for time, try it out.

This is the best place to get hibachi on the go! Great cooks, clean place and good movies on if you want to sit and eat.

Better than Kobe but without all the hype. Less expensive and with a drive through. Really good!

Our waitress, Jennifer, was amazing super sweet &, attentive. I had the Paradise Roll, which was incredible, and my friend ordered the Forest Roll (vegan), which was also delicious. So if you're a long time Central Florida resident, then you know that street is very walkable and super cute with the park nearby but also high end. I mean it has a Williams Sonoma, like casually. The restaurant is located at 525 S Park Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789. My boyfriend did get the reservation I think about a month in advance. It very much surprised me as one of my goals is to try new places in Orlando, and this was one that he had been to that I hadn't been to. So A++++ for him. So the restaurant had a super nice atmosphere but was very booked out. There were heart balloons at every table. So the decor was absolutely in the room with us lol. The service was very nice and I feel that they were very attentive and almost felt like maybe they had been trained to provide a certain feeling to customers. I'm sure they had been. Getting into the food, I'm not sure what the bill was. I wasn't allowed to look at it. I will say that I'm sure it was at least $100. I did leave feeling very full, but I do feel like that's a lot of money for me to feel full. We ordered the Misoyaki Butterfish, which was a Miso-glazed Chilean sea bass on a plate with ginger-sake eggplant, butter garlic sautéed spinach, and Japanese potato purée. It's a large plate and we did share, but it was not the whole fish. I think if I pay $45 for a fish, I want the whole fish. My rating is 8.5/10. It was incredibly delicious, but I want the rest of my fish. We also got the Kanpungi, which was fried Korean style boneless chicken bites smothered in a spicy soy sauce glaze. My rating of this is 9/10. I think it was great and was very filling for an appetizer. We accidentally ran into our friends at the restaurant, who had sent us a bottle of sake. The sake was great. We sent back a non-alcoholic cocktail they had and a sake based cocktail. I couldn't tell you what it tasted like, but the service presented and delivered back and forth between our table in a manner I can only describe as carrier pigeon-esque. They did great. I love fanfare. I think for a first date, this is a great place to bring someone you have been talking to for a little bit and want to show that you have a good stable job in this economy and like foods outside of American food. I wasn't on a first date as a note lol. My overall rating is 7.5/10. I mean I think everything was great, but that price stabbed me a little. My boyfriend did suggest to me that it would have been a higher rating if we had gotten one of the rolls. So that's on me. It is in a great walkable neighborhood though. So you are getting charged for ambiance.

This time I went with my husband and we ordered a few small plates and an espresso martini. The espresso martini was pretty standard, but we've definitely had better. The shishito peppers were okay, but I feel like I've gotten more in the past with an order. The karaage was highly disappointing, the sauce was overwhelming and made the fried chicken coating slightly soggy. I think a dry seasoning would've paired better. The beef cheek had nice presentation, but didn't really impress with the flavor; there's better places for yakitori. The otoro we got was decent. The ribs were my favorite of the night with good sauce and they fell off the bone. And then my real favorite of the night was the ube cheesecake, so delicious and flavorful! The service was great and the server was helpful in bringing us a happy hour menu after we asked. Interior was dark and had good vibes for a date night.

Food was quickly prepared and we barely waited for appetizers or entrees. The rolls were well made and portion size was relatively filling. I was thrilled that I made the choice to visit this restaurant for the first time. I was warmly greeted and seated right away. In fact, I entered right after opening time. My server was kind and unobtrusive. I perused the menu and she brought water while I was making my decisions. I opted for my standard, reliable choice of fried gyoza. There wasn't anything too extraordinary about this dish, but I was happy that the gyoza didn't taste stale. What really struck me was the delicious, nicely presented, tasty combination of flavors that I found in the Drama Queen roll. This roll contains spicy tuna, avocado, tempura flakes, yellowtail, jalepeno, black tobiko and spicy kimchee sauce. It was so delicious. And fresh! Way to go, Boku! I also ordered a Shrimp Tempura roll that contained avocado, butter lettuce, shrimp tempura, eel sauce and masago. I don't think I've had makimono with lettuce, but I was pleasantly surprised at the taste and texture. The interior seemed modern and had varying tones of gray. There's also a patio and you'll find a selection of beers and wine, including sake.

Let's start with props for being open at that time on a day when most restaurants are still sleeping from the night before. But here, you can get highly-curated, quality Japanese hand-rolls, with Sapporo or Asahi on draft, all kinds of sake, a calm, soothing atmosphere and friendly service. The place itself is very art-directed, modern and purposeful. Apparently it's owned by the Kabooki Sushi team, and the quality speaks for itself. It's not your typical sushi restaurant. It's hand rolls. Which means, seaweed is the wrap. Theirs is imported straight from Japan. And for the record, the seaweed is dense, flavorful and also way healthier for you than a mouthful of rice. I sat for the omakase which included a very delicious hamachi appetizer. Then an onslaught of handrolls including lobster, eel, a lean and fatty tuna (toro, the best) and a spicy root vegetable of the name I can't remember. In all, this place has great hours. A wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. And flavors that you can explore because the folks there want you to have fun eating the food as they prepare it. It's very live and fresh. And I'm super grateful it's just a few blocks away because I'll leave you with this. The prices are reasonable too. 5 stars all around. But be careful, I hear it gets packed during peak evening hours. Bravo though. Mosonori has a place in Orlando's culinary scene, for sure.
