I made an appointment, for 50 minutes, on 6/8/2025, to buy a mother of the bride dress. I live a little more than an hour away, but I went to Jan's because I had been there many years ago, and found that they were very helpful. I was assigned a sales lady, probably in her mid eighties, and not of any help at all. I explained that it was an August wedding, and it would be extremely hot, therefore, I wanted a light dress, with short sleeves ,and if possible, a high low style., I'm a plus size, and wanted something classic. I was not allowed to look alone, but shown many "heavy satin dresses", and she kept pushing dresses that she thought were beautiful, but they were certainly not like the type of dress I wanted, or color. She kept showing me heavy dresses, in dark colors, and certainly not something I could wear for an August wedding. After 14 minutes, with no help in finding an appropriate dress, in a material that I could possibly wear in August, I left the store terribly disappointed. read more

Went to pick up my dress on Saturday 8/10. It was a little late coming in but my consultant Natasha and manager Cheron could not have been more apologeti. I was delighted that they both recognized my son and me as we had not been there since March. They had Asunta (the seamstress) pin my hem right then and they do I only have to make one trip back to the store (I live 2 hours away). Asunta was very sweet and efficient. Once again, our experience at Jan's was top notch and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for formal wear! read more

Honestly, I have given Jan's Boutique two stars for two reasons which I will go into. First, I'll explain the reasoning for lack of stars. The experience was absolutely terrible all in all. As soon as you walk in there is basically every thing stating that they do not do bridesmaid dresses or help groups. They pretty much just do prom (their words) and mother of the bride dresses.....WHAT? We were looking for very different formal dresses which typical bridal shops did not have for us, we came here because of our search online showed that they carried multiple designers we were interested in. We LITERALLY had to explain this to them before they even allowed us to sign in, which they made us sign in on iPad's. They made sure to tell us that they cannot order us the same dresses but could order us the same color of different dresses (HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE?). After we picked our dresses we ordered the same dress, same color, and same size. They took us to the back where they had dresses hanging up on racks with sizes located on the top. We were informed to pick three dresses to try on and someone will assist with dressing us. (There was no help at all in finding dresses). We were assigned Marlo to help us in the dressing room which was probably one of the best things that happened during our visit. Marlo was great and was the first person to actually listen to us during this whole time. We are typically a size 4 but found the perfect dress in a size 2 which we were able to squeeze into.. When we went to the counter to order the dresses in a size 4, the older lady helping us literally laughed when I told her a size 4 and told me "you're more like a size 10" when she went to measure me. I had to explain something to her once again.. that I was able to fit into a size 2 with the exception of it zipping all the way. She had Marlo take me back so she could see, and than said that she thought a size 6 would fit. So, we ordered a size 6. I asked about return policies once the dress came into the shop if it was not the correct size, and they said that alterations could be done, the starting price of alterations could be anywhere from $100-$200, on top of the $400 we just spent buying the dress. The two stars is for their selection of dresses and for the young ladies they have helping with trying on the dresses as all of them were delightful. However, the older woman working here were just straight up rude and judgmental from start to finish. Even after we paid for our dresses in full and had questions. I'm really hoping that when we return to pick up our dresses once they come into the store that we will have a different experience. (I'll keep you all posted). read more

I am going to be totally honest here. I had heard from several people that Jan's had great dresses but the staff was snooty. I told my my sisters that if I didn't like the vibe there, we would just leave. How wrong I was!!! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with smiles, and only had a couple of minutes to wait before Lenore came to meet us. I cannot say enough good things about her, how helpful she was and more importantly how nice and friendly she was. My sisters and I had the best time. She was honest about some of the choices I had pictured on my phone and after trying two beautiful dresses, I found the perfect dress. It fit perfectly, was in my price range and I was able to take it home that day. I also met the manager who was very friendly and nice. So worth the drive!! We were in search for my daughters sweet 16 dress and had gone to a few places already. I live in Staten Island and my friend recommended Jan's Boutique Although it was an 1.5hr away I figured it couldn't hurt to try since my friend highly recommended them. We were greeted by the manager and then introduced to our assistant Jackie. I cannot speak more highly about Jackie. Kind, patient and an expert in her field. She made my shy daughter feel comfortable and gave her honest opinion without being pushy. Jan's Boutique had more of an inventory than the other places we had been to. Beautiful gowns on display and plenty to choose from. That was another impressive part. We were ALLOWED to choose what we liked from the rack! Some places had the assistant choose for you. We had a 45 min appt and my daughter tried about 6 dresses on. Jackie looked up the gowns as she tried them on and would tell us what other colors/sizes were available. What she thought she wanted (ball gown) and what she ended up buying (mermaid) were totally different and Jackie was so helpful through the process. I guess everyone has their own experience with Jan's Boutique, and looking at a lot of these Yelp reviews, you can't blame me for being a bit skeptical about giving up my coins, to this place... The reviews of the customer service was not favorable but I'd have to say, my experience was superior!! It's my daughter's senior prom, in May and we had been looking for dresses for over 2 months. We finally settled on a specific designer and the closest distributor of the brand was Jan's Boutique. So I actually came on Yelp to schedule an appointment and I got a response in about 20 minutes, for an appointment the next day... So good so far... We arrived a little late but they took us immediately and from the warm reception we received upon entering, I could already tell this was going to go well... After our initial sign in, we were paired with ChaRon, and from the start, I knew this would go extremely well... Not only was ChaRon, very attentive and extremely helpful... We shared some personal conversations and found out we had a lot in common... I definitely feel ChaRon, made my daughter's experience such a memorable one and I was extremely happy about the entire experience... Not to mention, they actually had her dress in house and we didn't have to order it... They also reassured me that they would not sell a duplicate dress to anyone that attended the same prom, that purchased from their store. From the beginning till the end, my daughter and I just had an amazing experience and we just felt extremely good about purchasing from Jan's... As far as any negativity, we just didn't experience any... I would definitely recommend Jan's, for any of your prom needs and if you want that extra cherry on top, try and get ChaRon, to help you... The dress was $160 over priced the alteration was $100-$125 more, a $35 layaway fee and it was a $1,000 dress, a special order fee of $50 I paid nothing, not to mention the booking fee and extra charge for a extra guest. Despite their attractive window displays & endorsement by bridal magazines & websites, this shop was a huge disappointment. Limited opportunity to peruse their offerings before being placed in a dressing room for limited try ons. NO other shop in the area charges a fee for an appointment, & a fixed minimum alteration fee that adds significantly to the cost of the purchase. We have visited twice in recent months, for both bridal & MOB gowns - but made our purchases elsewhere. Disappointing. We paid $20 for the 55-Minute VIP Prom appointment (the only place I know of that actually charges for an appointment), but there were so many other appointments at the exact same time, my daughter had to wait in line for space in front of a full-length mirror to see how the dresses looked. The waiting area was jam-packed, nowhere for parents to move, girls constantly shifting around fighting for space, trying to look in a mirror, and when they get one, not take too much time because someone else is waiting for them to move. It was stressful, chaotic, and beyond frustrating to not have the time and space to decide on a dress that's such a big purchase. When my daughter asked to re-try the first dress she tried on (which was her favorite) an older woman from the back counter, who I'm guessing is some kind of supervisor, stormed over and rudely told us that we were 10 minutes over our allotted appointment (which we were not), our time was up, our consultant had to go to lunch, but they would write the style down and we could schedule another appointment. I expressed my frustrations about the overall experience to her right then and there, that we paid for the longer appointment, that half of our time was spent waiting for mirror space, it was way too crowded, and we had zero guidance from our consultant--all my concerns were dismissed. I was told it's crowded because they have a full book, we were over our allotted time, she had to get the girl to lunch, and that was the end of it. And while our consultant was very sweet, she was very little help. She was quiet, timid, inexperienced, and didn't offer any suggestions or pull any dresses that she thought we might like based on our pictures, descriptions, and feedback on likes/dislikes. She just followed us around, waiting for us to pull dresses that she carried to the dressing room. And I don't blame her, she was very nice--I blame the management for putting her in that position when she's not ready, and they know how busy it's going to be. If you're charging for a VIP appointment, the service should live up to that level. This absolutely fell short in every way. read more

Unfortunately, the older woman that sat at the back counter, ruined our entire experience- for the amount of money the dress cost, she refused to order us a new dress even though we were willing to pay the additional fees. She was more interested in making money and taking the dresses that we tried on by the public,, off their racks. She was rude and abrupt. Expensive, rude, and limited. I arrived there about an hour before closing and they had maybe 1-2 customers. I asked if I could just look around quickly to see what they had. They made me make an appointment for right then and there in order to even look at their dresses, despite the fact that there was barely anyone in the store. A rude salesperson then asked me my age and determined that as I was not in high school, 90% of the dresses were too young for me and ushered me to the limited rack of "mother of the bride" dresses, fit for a woman who would be about 75+, and told me I was not allowed to look upstairs at their dresses. After examining the 7-8 geriatric dresses in my size, I asked to look upstairs, where they reluctantly allowed me to go. As I began to look around, the sales woman followed me around saying things about each dress I looked at like "I just sold that one in your hands to an 11 year old." Well maybe the 11 year old should not be dressing like a grown up then. For $350+ per dress, I'm not sure why you would be actively trying to make people feel bad about themselves, but I would not go back here. read more

I have never written a negative review before but feel compelled to do so after my experience at Jan's. I will preface my review by saying that I am a 39 year old woman who wears a size 10/12. I noted my size and preferences upon booking my appointment. When I arrived at the store I was paired with Ivy who was my sales associate. I told her I was looking for a navy and silver dress and that I was open to long and tea length dresses. I told her that I was looking for fit and flare or a-line dresses and that straight and mermaid styles were not for me. Ivy was very nice and walked me through the racks where we selected 8 dresses. This store boasts having a large selection. Yes, they have a lot of dresses but they have a very limited selection that's age appropriate for a 30 year old woman and frankly nothing age appropriate for a woman size 10/12. Every dress selected looked like something my grandmom would wear, with the exception of 2 dresses that were nice but still too old looking for me. The problems arose when we headed to the dressing room. There we were greeting by a woman who either owns the store or is Ivy's boss. I wish I had her name. She was AWFUL! The dressing room has curtains and you can hear everything being said by the staff. While I was changing this woman pulled one of the dresses and told Ivy, "she can't try that on, I don't want her to stretch it out." Over the course of the next 1/2 hour, this woman said the following things to me: "you can't try on that dress"; "if you must try it on, just right on and off, I don't want you to stretch it out"; "you really need to consider a dress more age appropriate"; "that one's not for you"; "you are trying on dresses that are too small"; and "there's your figure". When I asked if they had other dresses more age appropriate for someone in their 30s, I was told: "we really only carry slender styles for that demographic". At one point, Ivy told me to ignore her. I left the store in tears. I have never felt so horrible in my life. I realize that women come in all shapes and sizes. I am never going to wear a size 6 dress. My body has been through cancer, chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and radical hysterectomy. I realize that I do not need to share my medical history online but I know Jan's reads their reviews and I want them to understand that they will never know the backstory of a customer coming to their store. My journey has not been that of others but no one deserves to be fat shamed while shopping. I have been dealing with the emotional scars left by this appointment ever since. This woman needs education on how to talk to customers. It is interesting that as I look over reviews from Jan's, nearly every negative review comes from a fuller figured woman. I think that says a lot about this store. They need education, they need a wider selection of dresses and they need to consider their customers and their reputation. In the last review mentioning these issues, Jan's responded that they appreciated the feedback and would do better. I am here to say they are not. The following day I drove an hour to a store in Manalapan where I found a beautiful dress but an even more amazing sales team and store culture. There are lessons to be learned for Jan's and other local options for those wanting a positive dress shopping experience. read more

This was our first stop, so I wasn't sure what to expect. when we arrived 10 minutes before our appointment time, we were taken back right away by Michala. She was absolutely wonderful! She showed us a number of dresses and made my daughter feel very comfortable. We never felt rushed even though they were extreme busy because of the holiday weekend. We found a gorgeous dress and ended up purchasing it today!
