We went to Janine's today. We have been going there frequently since the restaurants closed. I called in our order and told he girl we were in the parking lot. She asked for a name and said we could pay when she called the name over the loudspeaker. Said it would be 15 minutes. We waited and waited and after a long wait went to the window. I asked when our order would be ready and she reprimanded me saying that when you call in an order you must come to the window to let them know you are there. I did tell the girl we were there.Anyways, our food was cold. My husband's hamburger and fries were cold, he threw away most of it. My chili dog was cold and had about 1 tablespoon of watery chili, plus it was cold. Very disappointed. That's it for the rest of us summer! They have lost a good customer!!! read more

Janine's is a long-time fixture in this community. Every kid goes there with his/her team at least once during baseball, soccer, etc season. People go for evening ice cream treats, lunches, and dinner. The food is generally very good, the menu is extensive, the portions are appropriate, and the prices are reasonable. It's an overall good value. The entertainment leaves a bit to be desired, and I prefer to listen to the car stereo and chat with my companions, and sometimes the service can be slow, but Janine's is great for warm summer evenings when you're relaxed and want really great burgers, fries, onion rings and something cold. read more

For some reason I expected Polka bands, but since have seen the website state that it is a DJ playing recorded music. Not bad, poorly attended probably because of the weather. On the 10th, I came back and ordered the bacon cheddar burger, and based on what was said and how (not by me), I in retrospect felt like such a bonehead for not reciprocating! Shimmering eyes and an amazing smile radiating epic true inner light! I was kind of a dazed out space cadet that day, intending to order the half pounder and instead having to order 2 quarter pounders. Before I left, I voiced my appreciation of how the cheerfulness here is really helping me (huge understatement) through a difficult time. I had more to add but saw someone rapidly approaching with what seemed like dagger eyes, which sped up my departure. I said nothing wrong and only want all to be as happy as they made me, but I am sorry if the other person saw it as something it was not. A major negative event forced my absence a few days later; One or two cooler times and "have a good one" and I sadly did not see that first person again. The deep gloom returned, interspersed with amazingly intense episodes of feelings of happiness, peace, kindness and well-being. An epic emotional roller coaster ride to say the least. Yet others were amazingly cheerful at times. On the first of September, I was even being called by my first name and almost everyone was smiling. I am Greg by the way, everyone knows that now. This Greg is almost certainly the most frequent Greg to visit, and the Greg that is the most impacted by this place. Abilities I never new I had and lasting positive impacts resulted. Then after that visit, a cooler vibe, one more where they were pleasant and using my name, and then ice coldness from all this last time. Some seemed like they had words but never said them. Although I did nothing wrong, I am so sorry if I said too much or not enough, or if my words of appreciation and respect and thanks had any negative impacts. I wish the best for everyone. read more

Hey! I like this place. They have Gifford's Ice Cream, but some specialty flavors are from Bliss Ice Cream, and I LOVE BLISS! Typical ice cream stand/fast food stand. We went on a really nice day, after watching the Boston Marathon. It was crowded, but it looked like they were moving the lines very well. We only had ice cream, but it was a pleasant experience. From now on, I won't drive too far out of way to get to Howard's. Janine's is just lovely! read more

Seems like an average ice cream stand/fast food greasy joint. The setup was nice, with a small pavillion. The burgers were like overcooked greasy hockey pucks, not impressed. Service doesn't get any better. Super clean, always someone outside washing tables. Food and ice cream are AMAZING. Where else are you going to get soft serve ice cream flavors like pumpkin, cheesecake, red raspberry, orange pineapple, etc! The list never ends and changes weekly! This, our first time at Janine's, wasn't a total bust, although it wasn't a completely euphoric experience either. We are devotees of Howard's Drive-In in West Brookfield (we adore Howard's half-pound lobster rolls) but after reading some really good online reviews of Janine's Frostee, we thought we might as well check it out and make the drive a little further west on Route 9 on this Saturday evening. We found the building setup/grounds and food options/prices at Janine's very similar to those at Howard's but Janine's has a bit more seating under canopies. I checked out the ladies' bathroom and found it to be impeccably clean as were the grounds in general. Being smokers, we also found their totally non-smoking policy in the open air disappointing (we feel free to smoke at the picnic tables not under a canopy at Howard's). As we came specifically for Janine's lobster rolls, we both ordered one. While the quarter-pound rolls had all claw meat (perfectly cooked), we found the rolls missing any hint of mayonnaise or other dressing/condiment (how odd since the meat was not served warm with butter), rife with unevenly cut chunks of celery and way too much iceberg lettuce for the size of the rolls. In fact, we found the rolls difficult to eat with such big chunks/whole claws and nothing to bind them together and after our first bites, I high-tailed it back to the food window to grab some mayo from the counter girl. That done, I'm sorry to say that I was the unlucky one to find a small piece of shell and some cartilage within my roll. No big deal, but that has never happened to either of us at Howard's Drive-In. The onion rings we shared were hot, crispy and quite tasty. After consuming our rolls and rings, we headed to our vehicle to partake of our after-dinner smoke, after which we found it necessary to sample Janine's ice cream (more than half the customers at the time we were there were ordering ice cream only). Although Janine's offers a plethora of Gifford's of Maine ice cream flavors (hard), my companion and I both opted for small vanilla and chocolate "twists" of soft serve---very much enjoyed and almost too much to eat. All in all, we thought the drive out from our home in Leicester a bit far considering the quality of their lobster rolls (definitely not THE BEST LOBSTER ROLLS EVER, as touted by a few online reviewers and on Janine's website) and the smoking restriction. We are pretty sure we will give a return visit to Janine's a miss unless, for some unknown reason, we happen to find ourselves in Ware (highly unlikely). But if so, why not just make the drive 10 minutes further to Howard's for truly outstanding lobster rolls and equally delicious ice cream? read more

We happened upon Janine's on the way to Hardwick Winery, and were pleasantly surprised. They have an extensive menu, plus ice cream, and the prices can't be beat. The picnic tables were very clean, and our order came out quickly. My only complaint is that everything is served on styrofoam, which even fast food chains have opted out of because it's so rough on the environment. read more

New to the area, first time here. While waiting for Chinese food the other day, I got talking with a local about another ice cream and food place (The Clam Box, that I will most likely review soon) and they suggested Janine's as having better fish and being better overall. Power went out during a recent storm so I ventured over to Janine's to give them a try. To better able to compare the two, I ordered the haddock dinner in its fried form as well as their clam fritter and chowder special. Looked really good (though there was no lemon wedge) and my mouth was already watering before I could shove a piece in. Starting with the fries. They were hot and boring. Generic, non seasoned, simple fries from a bulk bag. They weren't bad, they just didn't have anything to set them apart. Onto the fish. Looked great. Nice thin breading, flakey when broken apart. Popped a piece in my mouth without condiments and all I could taste was ammonia and a good amount of it too. For those that don't know, ammonia taste = old fish. I ate it anyway as I'm not usually one to get ill from eating old fish (and I didn't this time either). Onto the coleslaw. Same as the fries, kind of generic and most likely premade. If not premade, they should look into tweaking their recipe a bit. Next up the clam fritters and chowder. Fritters were average and use frozen clams. Okay flavor, but chewy clams will keep me away from ordering them again. The chowder seems also to be a premade chowder. On the thin side and very generic. Not terrible, but mediocre. I've had both better and worse. Not wanting to completely write the place off, I gave their ice cream a go too. The ice cream was a generous portion at a really good price and is the reason for the 2 stars (versus just a 1 star or a more accurate "I'd give it zero stars if I could" notation). That said, I'm going to give them another try as the rest of their menu looks okay, but will stay away from their seafood. read more
