Driving back to Chicago from St Louis and craving for rice. James Home Kitchen pops up on Yelp and what a pleasant surprise as we had the best meal and the most amazing service!!! Got to JHK 15 minutes before closing and Ms. Len the hostess/owner/chef's wife welcomed our party of eight and made us feel at home. She took our drink orders and did not rush us to order. Menu was not huge and you can tell that it caters to their caucasian clientele. Food offerings were asian with an american twist to it such as tonkatsu pork chops or panko fried fish with steamed broccoli. Texas style brisket, bbq ribs and A couple of taiwanese items were also available on the menu. As we were deciding on what to order, Chef James stopped by and walked us through the menu. He explained each dish and how he prepares them such as they only make 25 orders of eggroll per day. Dumplings are done from scratch. He takes the time to chop the meat because ground meat takes out the juiciness of the pork. He also pointed out that there is no fried rice on the menu but he will make Taiwanese Fried Rice just for our group. Our table ordered beef bulgogi, panko crusted fish, tonkatsu porkchop, brisket, beef taiwanese noodle and the paw waw pork belly. At JHK, each entree comes with one crab rangoon and one chicken wing - amazing! My brother liked the wing so much that he asked Ms. Len jokingly if he could have another wing. She laughed at him and came back with 8 more wings on the house. A few minutes later she came back and presented us with 8 dumplings on the house as well! Dumplings were juicy little morsels of meat with a sauce not too salty not too sweet. Amazing little teasers turned up to be a wonderful precedent to a superb dinner. Brisket was juicy with an asian inspired BBQ sauce on the side. The pork belly with basmati rice topped with a fried egg melts in your mouth and taste a little close to my filipino pork belly adobo at home. Panko crusted fish and tonkatsu porkchop turned out to be juicy and tender and done at the right temperature. Bulgogi tasted more like Mongolian Beef and was delicious . The beef taiwanese noodle soup tasted just like a beef stew added to the soup. The broth was rich, hot and very filling. And the specially made Taiwanese Fried Rice was awesome just like we were eating something we whipped up at home. Such huge entree portions that we had leftovers to continue enjoying at home. At the end of dinner, Chef James comes over to the table and gives us a dozen fresh peaches. They were freshly picked that morning from his friend's farm that does not use any pesticide. By this time, an hour and a half after closing passed and still not being rushed. Chef James and his wife Len were so gracious, generous and made us feel at home. We even met Dallas, their dog. What an exceptional night and I highly recommend you try this place when you are in the area or passing by Springfield!!! read more

Been wanting to check this place out and finally did and wasn't disappointed. Food is very homemade tasting and fresh. I think there are only two employees here, the owners. The woman working there was super cheerful and super fast. She is the only server and she floats from table to table like a ballet. Always sweet and pleasant. The food is cooked as ordered by the Chef (just him) so it doesn't come out fast. I wouldn't say it comes out slow either. I had the pork tenderloin with a panko crust and it was perfectly cooked. It was about an inch thick, tender and juicy. Just perfectly prepared. It came with roasted red potatoes and steamed broccoli which I asked for rice instead and that was not a problem . She ordered the honey spicy chicken which we both enjoyed. I ordered the Taiwanese pulled pork. I was expecting more of a traditional pulled pork, this was more of a stew with rice (like I stated earlier, I'm more of a traditionalist). My wife tried it and loved it. Chef James wife remembered my son who is 19 years old and in the military and asked about his travels and sent him away with a box of wings for lunch the next day "so he will have lunch and have good things to eat". Rare find, this place. The wings are covered in a sauce made by James that is sweet and sour but not too sweet. The crabmeat rangoons are delicate and flaky - the ribs are fall of the bone and covered in a delicious homemade sauce.
