Must try! My friends and I tried this place and absolutely loved it. Between the 6 of us we tried lots of food, and everything was amazing. Brand new restaurant in Montclair and it doesnt disappoint overall. The service is friendly and the interiors are slightly dated (but hey most indian restaurants have a dated look!). I enjoyed the beetroot tikki, pickled mushrooms from the apps and pindi choley from the mains. The pudina paratha was also good and well cooked. The palak chaat was way too oily IMO and dal makhni was underwhelming. Malai kofta was ok as well. I would come back for the pindi chole and to tey other things on the menu! read more

We were looking for appetizers to carry to our friends place for a get together. Called the restaurant for vegetarian options. They recommended mushroom hariyali and a paneer appetizer. The portions were good size and the right amount was suggested by the restaurant staff. The food was DELICIOUS, our friends also had positive feedback on the appetizers. Came here few days after it's indoor dining opened for service. We were welcomed and served by Abhi, who was incredibly sweet and informative about the dishes we were being served. In addition to the appetizer we ordered (afghani kebab), he also gave us a complimentary app so we can try it, palak chat... It reminded me of a deconstructed veggie samosa, then we received our two entrees: vindaloo and chicken tikka masala lunch specials which came with potato side and lentil. All were perfectly spiced and flavored. With it we received onio kulcha and garlic naan. The bread was delicious and not overly oily like some can be. Lastly we received dessert that comes with the lunch specials, the rice pudding, which was sweet and aromatic. We had to pause the movie we were watching (Strangers on a Train) because this food was simply so good, we didn't want to forget to post about it. Let's start with the Butter chicken (Chicken Makhani). It is truly sublime. The 'spicy' version we get is just right, expertly apportioned and allows the flavor to come through but if you like spice, you won't be disappointed. Best anywhere I've ever had. Another favorite of ours is the Baingan Barta - lovely undertone of cinnamon, yet smokey, smooth, and so flavorful. The portions of each are very generous, and we look forward to having as leftovers. Honestly, I've had better. I visited their other location in Ridgewood and I think that location is a lot better. As soon, as we walked in someone, was at our face asking what they can do- sure it's not the worse thing. I expected the inside to be a lot bigger. We were seated and given menus. We decided to try the kabab trio, Briyani, and the lamb Korma. The kabob trio was excellent the meat was soft and delicious. The briyani and lamb korma was okay, the lamb lacked salt and needed a bit more flavor. As for the Briyani, it could have used less saffron. Overall, I was hoping for an elevated experience but it wasn't too bad. read more

My pictures aren't great because I already dug in. But food was delicious and flavorful. Meat was tender and fresh tasting. Naan was absolutely delightful in texture. Would def come back. I ordered the Afghani Kebab, Garlic Naan, Garlic Rosemary Naan, Tariwhalla Kukkad (not my fav), Shahi Murgh Korma (delicious!!!). If you're looking for a great Indian dinner look no further. After reading the great reviews we had to try Jalwa and we were so glad we did. The restaurant decor is warm and inviting. The owner greeted us and treated us as if we were family. We started our order with the Samosa Chaat and for our dinner we had the Dal Bukhara, Lamb Rogan Josh, Dum Pukht Chicken Biryani and the Garlic Naan Bread. Everything was so flavorful and big portions. We had plenty of leftovers. By far our favorite Indian food in northern NJ. We can't wait to come back. read more

This restaurant's food used to be very good. It was our go to place. And even for the take out, it was good. But from the last 2-3 times, we have had bad experience. Their all the curries taste the same, and they are so heavily creamy, you don't feel good after eating them. Put their curries in the fridge and take it out after a few hours, you'll see how heavily creamy they make it. I have been eating Indian food for over 40 years...Hicksville, jackson heights, little india on 6th street back in the day...pretty much everywhere in the tri-state area. Jalwa never disappoints, the food is absolutely mouthwatering . We ordered food through Uber eats. It said about 45 minutes to an hour for delivery but one our driver got there they had not yet started preparing the order. Our driver waited there for almost another 20 to 25 minutes before the food was ready. Overall, the food was very average. I would not consider it the best Indian food in the area by any means. We ordered the palak chaat and it was completely soggy by the time it got to us which is expected and why a lot of restaurants keep the dry and wet components separate. The chicken makhani and pandara road wala butter chicken were okay. The samosa had okay flavor but the texture of the samosa was really good. FYI in terms of spice level as someone who cannot tolerate spice very well I would say that the food is a little spicy. Everyone else in our group enjoyed it I wish I had gotten some thing a little milder. Overall the food was OK maybe the experience would be different had we eating at the restaurant. read more

The cheese naan barely has cheese in it. It's veryyyyy overpriced. The afghani "kabab" taste nothing afghani, it tastes like chicken that's been drenched in turmeric. It's insanely overpriced. I think it's called modern because it's not authentic Indian / Pakistani / afghani taste. It's more so for people that have no idea what the flavor is supposed to be like, so they just overpay for mediocre food. I didn't believe the review that said the food was just okayyy, but I should've listened. I feel like I wasted so much money. This is for people that don't have developed taste buds. :/ read more

My wife and I have eaten from this restaurant in the past, and the food was good, and portions were adequate. We ate in and ordered takeout from here regularly. Tonigh, she had a taste for the chicken makhani and ordered takeout. She also ordered garlic Naan. When she got home and saw the meager portions of food she got for $35, I immediately said return it even though we're 15 minutes away. To be charged so much for children sized servings is ridiculous!!! How can they justify 8pcs of chicken and a handful of rice. Even if both containers were overfilled, it would not equate to the price. If the owner would like to make this right, he can contact me, or I will continue to post negative comments on all platforms until they do respond!!!! For us to patronize you even during covid time when things were rough and to be treated like this is a slap in the face to good loyal customers!!!!! Our first visit since they opened four months ago in the Mish Mish spot. We'll definitely be back and with the friends who introduced us to Tashan in West Caldwell owned by the same experienced management. It was a beautiful night so we ate outside, but were always promptly attended to by the owner and one of the brother/partners of Tashan. And, yes, I forgot their names, typical. Jalwa is Hindi for the radiation of beams of light, a beamy brightness. That fits our overarching impression of the food. It's FRESH, high quality ingredients, expertly prepared and made NOW for you. No overcooking. No dull sauces, withered veg, dry meat. Of the 94 menu items, many are old favorites (22 vegetarian) but some were new to me, like Masala Calamari with its spicy tomato sauce. How spicy is your choice. I would go with "Full" next time. The chef's specialty, Afgani Kebab is one of those dishes which in so many places is indifferently marinated and overcooked but, here distinctly tastes of ginger, garlic and cardamom and remains juicy. Other starters for next time might be Galouti Kebab, lamb patties on mini Mughlai Paratha which are flaky layers of pan-fried wheat dough or the Saffron Butter Garlic Crab. The deeply-flavored Dal Bukhara is as good as everyone says and with the Shrimp Bhuna our favorite of the night. It inspired me to look up the source restaurant, the ITC Bukhara at The Maurya Hotel in New Delhi, just a stunner. The fresh baked breads are a specialty (12 on the menu), the naan is eye-poppingly huge. We opted for the Onion Kulcha which went particularly well with everything from the tamarind sauce to the rest of our dishes. My Garlic Shrimp Bhuna had an elegant masala and gently cooked seafood. Jasmine rice was ethereally fluffy, every long grain distinct. To conclude, Gulab Jamun is reliably skip-able elsewhere. Here it tasted fresh and the sauce made a great topping for the outstanding PAAN ice cream - my Indian Sunday! PAAN is the mix of spices seen as a palate cleanser cum breath freshener at many places. Here it's the flavoring for a rich but refreshing, sweet rose petal, candied fennel dessert that I imagine is the food of choice in Svarga Loka, the esoteric plane. We left thoroughly delighted and with three meals to look forward to at home. Welcome to the neighborhood! read more

Outstandingly tasty tandoori chicken. Absolutely delicious. The portion was a little small but wow, the flavor was so good. The dal was probably the best I've ever had. Spicy and savory, smoothy but not too creamy. The naan was a little too soggy, but it was delivery and in a Chinese food spare rib bag. The only thing that kept this from being a 5 star review was the rice pudding dessert was terrible. There was way too much saffron in it. This is usually one of my favs but this one was a disappointment. Even so, this might be my new go-to Indian in Montclair. read more

Confession: I am not a huge fan of Indian food. Admission: This Indian food is so special it has made me a convert. OMG! I decided to try this new spot last night, and am I glad I did. They had me at the Palak Paneer. Luscious creamed spinach with huge cubes of cottage cheese, not the usual giblets of cheese that would make the Jolly Green Giant sad. Next was the Chicken Tikka Masala. Perfectly seasoned chunks of chicken that melted in your mouth. Spicy, but not too spicy. Just right! The plentiful portion of rice was fluffy and tasty, and anything but run-of-the-mill. The garlic Naan was non-exciting, but it really isn't meant to be. Merely a vehicle to soak up the delectable sauce. Generous portions would be a major understatement. There was enough food left, including rice, for another sumptuous meal. Not sure if this gem is called Jalwa or Tamasha, but I am calling it down right deliciousness. If you love Indian food, this is a spot you can't afford to miss. If you don't love Indian food, try this, and you undoubtedly will become a fan. read more

Had to add table salt to get even the slightest hint of seasoning to come through. Naan was good but only saving grace. You have much better options around the area. Have to suspect other reviewers/influencers were paid or given free meals to leave good reviews. Taste and judge for yourself, but fair warning given. read more
