We just made it for happy hour and we order a variation of items. Ceviche, mussels, calamari, tacos, salmon, balsamic portobello and of course margaritas and sangrias. The food was delicious and salmon (my apologies for not knowing the exact name) but it was delectable!!! The only reason I didn't give 5 because the drinks could've hit the spot just a tad bit better. However, it was happy hour so... in summary, this is a spot to visit regularly. I'm a Southern California native, so believe me when I say I know good Mexican food. I'm in the Navy so I was stationed in Spain for two years, which is long enough to know what good Spanish food as well. I was stationed at the Naval Academy for about 2 years and I used to go to this place quite often with my girlfriend. For being out in Annapolis, this place is not that bad. It does a decent rendition of Mexican, Spanish, Cuban, and Puerto Rican food. I tried their Jamon tapa and it was somewhat dry. I think they cooked it, which is a huge no-no. I also ordered their Spanish style tortilla (baked scrambled eggs with potatoes and seasonings) and it wasn't nearly as good as the stuff I would commonly get in Spain, but it was still pretty good overall. It was just far more pricey than I was otherwise accustomed to. I coordinated having flowers delivered to this spot for my girlfriend's birthday in April of 2009 and the staff was very courteous and understanding in helping me make this happen. We came to our table and the bouquet, a magnificent one at that, was waiting at our reserved table. They really went out of their way for me to make an excellent impression on my baby. The food we ordered: She ordered one of her favorites. Ropa Vieja. She's originally from Miami so Ropa Vieja is one of her favorite dishes and Jalapenos does a very good job of it. I ordered some Paella, but the non-seafood variety. It was full of flavors and and each bite was bursting with saffron - just the way I like it. I also started off with some Pozole soup, and I will say that they do a very good job of that here. I've ordered so many different dishes from this place and everything was fantastic, especially considering the location of this place as it is not known for having many good Mexican/Latin restaurants. I mean, it's Annapolis! You come here to eat anything blue crab like steamed crabs, crab cakes, etc. But this spot was an excellent alternative. And now that I am back in Southern California. I had to stop and write a review about this place. I was going to give it 4 stars but then I remembered how the staff here went out of their way to help me make my girlfriend's birthday last year a very memorable one. I really enjoy Jalapenos. This place is a classic example of why you do not judge a book by its cover. I have dined here numerous times and I always love the reaction I get when there is someone in the party that has never been here before. They get awfully quiet when you park the car and start walking up to the front door of this strip mall gem. Once inside, I think you will find the restaurant very quaint and relaxing. They have a tiny bar area, but the dining area is actually much larger than it looks from the outside. Jalapenos has some delicious entrees, and the one I order most often is the shrimp and scallops in a rich cream sauce over rice. This dish is to die for. The guacamole and sangria are usually a "must" for me as well. If you like tapas (which I normally do not) this is the place to come. They have very innovative appetizers/small plates and they pack a ton of flavor into all of their dishes. The chef is experienced and has had great success in the Annapolis area for quite some time now (at Jalapenos, as well as other Annapolis staples prior to opening this joint). Pros: Great locals restaurant that should surprisingly exceed your expectations. Try any of the lamb or shellfish dishes. Cons: It is normally tough to get a reservation last minute on the weekends. They don't offer a huge array of "specials" for the evenings so if you dine here frequently you could get tired of the menu...... but don't worry, the menu is pretty large. read more

Oh my God, I am a happy girl!! Do not let the exterior fool you! Although it looks like a little hole in the wall Mexican greasy spoon sitting in the middle of a strip mall, don't let it fool you! Jalapenos is a busy tapas restaurant with more Spanish food than Mexican. There was a guitar player in the corner playing traditional Spanish guitar that added to the atmosphere. The place was packed and we were lucky to get a table! I would definitely recommend making reservations if going during peak hours. The margaritas were phenomenal but the sangria looked so good that we'll be returning again this weekend to try it! The food was great! The only thing that threw me off a bit was that there chorizo was thinly sliced like salami not chunky like I'm used to. Everything else that we tried was on point; from the mussels to the bistec it was De-Li-Cious! Despite being located in a strip mall and the somewhat racist mascot of a jalapeno in a sombrero the atmosphere and food inside is pretty classy. This is not really a Mexican restaurant, but more of a variety of foods from various Latin countries. If you go in a group they have a wide variety of tapas to chose from. On the lunch menu, I would recommend the fish tacos. My SO really likes the guacamole. They have several interesting selections on the dinner menu. The Cuban dish ropa vieja and their version of chicken mole are both good choices for dinner. One of the better Latin based food places in Maryland. read more

This place had a good recommendation by word of mouth, so I ordered a chile relleno to go. When I got it home, I tried to cut into it with a serrated knife, but I literally could not cut through a pepper!! They had apparently microwaved it until the cheese inside the pepper turned into something resembling recently set concrete. I threw the whole thing away. A waste of time, money and food. read more

I think this place is VERY underrated because of the Location. You would not believe this hidden gem was in this particular strip mall. Everything I've ever tasted has been delicious. The atmosphere is cozy, nice music normally played by a guitarist. The staff is helpful, polite and well educated on their cuisine. An excellent date night restaurant! Jalapenos was recommended by a waiter at another restaurant when he found out we're new in town. Boy am I glad he did. No way I would have found it or sought it out in the strip mall had he not. Don't let the location fool you. Once inside the doors, you are taken to a cozy, quaint fusion style restaurant where you can have Mexican or Spanish tapas, excellent sangria, a wonderful wine selection and forget all about the world outside the door! My daughter had enchiladas which is what she was wanting. My husband had something (?) and I had a funderful selection of tapas that will bring me back again SOON. I probably would never have tried Jalapenos if not for the recommendation from my husband's friend. He told us to ignore the outside and take a chance. Boy, am I glad that we did. It has now become our "something special" place to dine. I have to admit, I have never been a big fan of ordering fish in a restaurant. I tend to be a little neurotic about it not being cooked enough. I decided to live dangerously on our first visit here, and never looked back. I have ordered the fish special almost every visit, and have never regretted it. In fact, I have only ordered off of the menu a couple of times. There is a large variety of tapas, but we fell in love with the croquettas and have gotten them every time. If you only wanted to sample the tapas as a meal, there would be plenty to choose from. The sangria is tasty, with lots of fresh fruit. This week my husband chose a special that was a seafood pasta. It was delicious except for the mussels. They were probably fine, but I am not a fan. I ordered off the menu for a change and got fish baked with a coating of plantains with rice and black bean sauce. This is a new favorite. Try to save room for dessert. The bread pudding and flan are great, but I highly recommend the banana cheesecake chimichanga. I can't remember the exact name, but it comes with ice cream and is to die for. We have never had a bad experience here. It is very pretty on the inside, and you forget that you are in a strip mall. We have been able to get a table occasionally on a weekend without a reservation. On average we spend about $85 for the 2 of us with an appetizer, drinks, coffee and dessert. I was surprised by how much I liked this place. I didn't have high expectations given its location in the strip mall next to the Old Country Buffet. On the two occasions we been, the service was excellent and the food was better than average. Good guacamole Oaxaca, fresh tortilla chips, and tasty salsa. Ropa Vieja was lovely. The fajitas, enchiladas, and The Arroz A La Tumbada (Rice and seafood dish with mint and cilantro) were all well made, and large portions. I haven't been to many Mexican places since I moved back to Maryland, but I'd definitely come back here again. The service alone was better than most places I've been anywhere. Such friendly staff. I found some reviews of Jalapenos on some other sites and had to laugh at the poor ratings. It seems some diners expect the old Tex Mex favorites i.e. bean laden burritos, overstuffed deep fried chimichangas, and boring tacos etc. One guy even said, I'm from Texas and I know Mexican food, and Jalapenos isn't it. R U kidding me???? These are the kind of folks that should keep their opinions to themselves. Yes, Jalapenos may be a deceiving name to some, but it always invokes longing whenever I hear the word. We love this place. I have never had a bad meal here and we have dined at this establishment numerous times including with out of town guests whose palates are pretty sophisticated. I was never embarrassed bringing folks here as I am that confident in their food. The menu is always fun to peruse and it's hard not to order the same items from the time before since they are that good. Last week, they didn't have one of my all time faves, crab stuffed piquillos peppers with spinach and cheese and served with a roasted and tangy tomato sauce. Sublime. My disappointment was short lived as I discovered a new tapas of seared duck breast with a honey glaze. This dish managed to do the impossible: it temporarily made me forget the stuffed peppers! Anyway, the plate came out and the duck was just too rare, but a quick trip back to the broiler brought the bird to a perfect doneness and turned the soft skin into a crackling delight. Note to self, just ask for medium next time. Some of the other stars on their menu include: a classic - shrimp sauteed with spinach, pine nuts and raisins, salmon with lemon, butter and capers, any filled enchiladas de mole, guacamole Oaxaca, empanadas and croquetas. Thank goodness this place isn't Tex Mex, I think the folks of Annapolis can handle some REAL ethnic cuisine. I've been here twice and have been super pleased with what I got. My favorite thing ... hands down... was the calamari in a port sauce. Get it. Even if you think you don't like squid. My boyfriend and I ate every bit...and when the waiter came to clear our table ...he then asked if we were done or if we wanted more bread to dip into the sauce. It was like he read our minds. And we got more bread. It was THAT good. The paella is also delicious, and can easily feed 2 people. The duck tapas was a wee underseasoned, but not bad. The ceviche was pretty good, and the guacamole was super fresh. The service was friendly and kind as well. And it seemed as though they had live music every friday at around 8. Lunch was fish tacos and the shrimp in garlic (a bad mistake in the end because I was singing later and oh my the garlic stayed with me). Don't let it's location fool you! It looks like a shady strip mall joint that will leave you with dysentery or worse, but go! The minute you step inside, your jaw drops at the gorgeous design. Waterfall glass, walls of wine, everything is so lovely. You forget there is a dollar tree next door. The food is great. They offer different things for lunch and dinner, but everything I've tasted has been great. Their service is attentive and intimate without being obnoxious. You are never for want of anything. Margaritas are strong and sweet and sour, delicious. Staff is so accommodating. Though it's initially a confusing place-- is it Mexican? Spanish? Why is in the saddest little strip mall in a rapidly developing part of Annapolis? This place never disappoints. The food is great (for very reasonable prices) and the service is always friendly. I chose carnitas tacos ($7.75) and mussels in tomato sauce (mejillones cantina--$8.75) giving me a taste of both. The three tacos came with just one corn tortilla each (yay-- I don't like it when the taco is so soggy it requires two) and contained just basics: carnitas, onions, cilantro and guacamole sauce. Honestly, these three probably would have been enough! But the generous portion of mussels was also fantastic. The tomato sauce, which was so well-balanced, neither too sweet or too tart, was so addictive I even asked for some bread (hot rolls!) to mop it up. The menu is quite extensive and offers something for everyone, since you can mix it up with some small plates or a larger platter you might find at a Tex-Mex place (I think the menu has changed recently with more of an emphasis on the Tex-Mex options, like burritos and fajitas). Definitely check this out! It's a great non-chain option in an area of Annapolis littered with them. read more

Despite its somewhat dubious exterior and location (in a non-descript strip mall), Jalapenos is actually a decent sit-down restaurant (with surprisingly comfortable seats). The food ranges from decent to very, very good. The portions are on the larger end, so just four tapas dishes could send two people home on a full stomach. Of the tapas, I especially like: the lamb meatballs in cream sauce, and the portobello mushroom in the balsamic reduction sauce. The ceviche is good, but a little too sweet. You know, I frequently find that those little nondescript hole-in-the-wall restaurants (often located in strip malls) yield some of the best culinary experiences. Jalapenos, despite the cheesy/chain-like name, is no exception. J and I stopped here one Sunday after a long ride home from the beach and a longer stretch of traffic. Our Mexican oasis. The decor was very nice and completely transports you once you step inside, away from the parking lot and odd assortment of neighboring businesses. But what really assaults your senses are the smells...of delicious fare cooking away behind the scenes. We sampled a varied and vast offering of tapas--and let our waiter select practically all of them for us. NOT A BAD ONE IN THE BUNCH! We also let him select our drinks (results---not as good). We have definite plans to return. The roast suckling pig, though I'm not personally a fan, sounds intriguing. It must be ordered two days in advance and feeds a group of six. A great place for tapas. We got several: the calamari, the chorizo, the croquettes, the empanadas, and the fresh guac and chips. All were really good, though the chorizo de Tolucua was AMAZING... Paired with the potatoes, it was heaven. The guacamole was decent, but the guacamole done at Azul 17 was superior. We also got a pitcher of red sangria, which was very tasty. The place has a very nice but eclectic decor, my only complaint was that it was a little dark. We got there early and had no issues but I can see that the place is pretty popular, as it was packed when we left. A good place for a night out. read more

Food tasted okay, service was mediocre, and prices are so-so. Jalapeños ranks average in my tapas restaurant scale....not very original or authentic. Not sure what kind of theme they are going for, but they seem to be confused. Maybe they were trying to "class it up" with a more upscale restaurant atmosphere, but with with middle of the road "good, but not great" flavors and menu selections, they fall on the average, or above average if I am being generous. They're probably the only Spanish tapas restaurant in the Annapolis area, so I can't compare or recommend other options. If you're willing to drive an hour to Rockville and visit La Tasca...that's your best bet. read more

Went with my husband and son for dinner. Wait staff is pleasant but not cloying. Food was spiced and flavorful. I got ceviche in lime. Husband got ceviche in tomato base. Both were full of seafood and delicious. I got shrimp tacos with cactus, Onions and cilantro. Son got a diner with pork that he was happy with and husband stuck with tapas. For desert we got 3 different deserts and all were delicious. I got the Bomba Tropical. It was refreshing and Huge. Bread pudding was moist. Meal was not cheap but thouroughly enjoyed it. I only wish the location were in a place where you could enjoy the outside while you eat. There is no outside seating and no view. Windows are covered with curtains. read more

I'd give this place roughly a high 3 starts, rounded to 4. We stopped in here the other night for a quick organizational meeting. We had about 12 people in our party and met in their private room in the back. The good: The food! The name Jalapenos might suggest this is a Mexican place, but the food seemed to have more of a Cuban influence. Plantains were part of several of the meals, but it wasn't spicy in the classic Mexican food kind of way. I had beef, the SO had fish, the munchkins had enchiladas and tacos. We were all happy. The prices were a smidge higher than I'd expect, but I suspect that's because we were in Annapolis. This place is right near the downtown shopping area and parking was free and plentiful. The food is easily 4 starts, but the price knocks it down to 3. Atmosphere: romantic, quiet, and a great date night vibe. Service: Excellent. Our waiter was good, but the host/manager (possibly owner?) was incredible. You often get less than average service at a nicer restaurant when you have a young child with you (no matter how well behaved they are). The host was very kind. Food: Guacamole-excellent. Even my non veggie eating little man dove in. Fajitas-too greasy for me, but had good flavor. Sangria-very tasty, but watch for the price, which is not listed. We got the bill and OUCH. Rice and Beans-good, but I'm spoiled by Xitomate in Columbia. The price and atmosphere will probably make this a one time dine for us. I tried this place once a few months ago for happy hour. It was just ok. I decided to try it again for dinner - a party of 5 ladies, looking to eat, drink and be merry. Maybe I am old school, but I thought larger parties got attentive servers because of the possibility of a nice sized tip. Well, not at Jalapenos. The menu is very long and hard to read. We had questions. This seemed to annoy the waiter. It took 35 minutes for our food to come out. This was a Tuesday night. The place was not packed, by any means. In the meantime, we noticed other tables had bread and sweet pickles as a complimentary pre-meal teaser (in lieu of chips and salsa... still don't understand why they serve bread a pickles instead of chips/salsa, but ok...?). Our server never brought us any. We asked about it and he said - "do you want that?" YES. Our meal took 35 minutes to be served, yes, please bring the bread that every other table has. We had to ask for drink refills and flag people down to locate our waiter. I don't understand what people like about this place? At least at Applebees, you aren't paying $20 a plate to be ignored and given attitude. The prices are very steep. I guess everything here is basically tapas? I ordered the portabello tacos - 3 tiny tacos. No rice, no beans, no salad, nothing... 2 hours and $18 later, I was hungry again. I did eventually have a free piece of bread though. Definitely a good vibe restaurant. Perfect lighting and set-up. Good service. For appetizer, I had Sopa de Posole. It was ok, but nothing phenomenal. For entree, I had their chorizo enchiladas. Unfortunately, I actually didn't like the enchilada that much. Personally, I thought that it lacked some flavor. When I am in Annapolis area, I may re-visit and re-evaluate. Jalapenos is settled between a dollar store and a Christian book store and appears unassuming. But once inside you'll notice a nice attention to interior design and a friendly staff. Just okay and overpriced - Setas and Croquetas. The ambiance was much nicer than expected (even though I was told this would happen by Yelp). The patronage was mostly 40+ couples and groups. Because of this, those wearing jeans and t-shirts (present company included) would feel a little strange and underdressed. The decor felt inconsistent with the cuisine. There was a lot of handpainted murals of a countryside scenery and faux exposed brick paintings on the wall. Our chairs were plush but many of the ones surrounding us had one to two pillows on the seat (must have been sunken in seat cushions). Service was good, nothing remarkable as great or terrible. Solid choice. Unique menu of Mexican and Cuban food. Classy atmosphere, great prices. We both enjoyed our Cuban lunch plates of stewed and shredded meats. Beef was smaller than pork but came with rice and black beans. Fried plantains were included and really tasty. Only $11 each. Chips and salsa tasted better than most restaurants. Quiet, somewhat empty atmosphere at lunch. Our server seemed to forget about us when we were finished, but a little wait was ok. Jalapeños is my favorite restaurant despite the fact that I no longer live in Maryland. My wife and I have been coming here for years. It has been our go to place for special events as well as for week night dinners. Now we always make it a point to come back when we are back in town visiting family. Yes this place is well hidden but everyone in the restaurant is most likely a regular. You just don't stumble across Jalapeños. The food is amazing. It is a mixture of Spanish and Mexican. We typically stick to the Spanish food here. If I'm not mistaken the owners also have a Taquería near by (The name escapes me right now) I head there if I'm in the mood for mexican. My wife generally gets two tapas for her dinner. She normally gets the Tamale del Norte (Corn masa with chicken, jalapenos, and tomatoes wrapped in corn husk) and Chorizo de Toluca (Toluca style chorizo, sauteed with tequila-cilantro butter and served over potatoes). I generally always have the same thing for an appetizer: Solomillo De Cerdo Al Jerez (Pork tenderloin sauteed in a sweet sherry cream sauce served with papas con rajas) afterwards I typically get either one of the many specials or I bounce between to stand by entrees: Chuleta de Cerdo (Center cut pork chop, marinated in vegetable and sesame oil, garlic, shallots, peppercorns, honey, and thyme, then grilled and topped with caramelized onions) or Gordero Asado (Rack of lamb, rubbed with rosemary and served with black mole). Both are great though I end up with the Chuleta de Cerdo more often. Another thing to make sure you get is the Sangria it is awesome. The one thing I would recommend is that you get a reservation. You can walk up but your more likely to get a table if you make a reservation. read more

Came here based off the rave reviews on Yelp and found that this place is pretty good. I ordered entirely off the tapas menu this time, Vieras Bahia, Calamares Fritos, Croquetas, and Gambas al Ajillo. The Vieras Bahia comes with 2 sea scallops seared and then sauteed with a mixture of tomatoes and herbs. The menu says theres some lemon juice and beer, but I really only get the flavor of tomatoes in here. The scallops were almost perfectly cooked. The inside was glistening and everything was perfect except for the sear on one side of the scallop. The pan must have been way too hot and it did cause a burnt flavor to be present and overpowering. The idea here is excellent, the execution was almost perfect but this one flaw did detract quite a bit. Gambas al Ajillo comes with about 6 or 7 shrimp sauteed with what appeared to be a similar mixture as the Vieras Bahia. The finishing with dry sherry is very much obvious in this dish, maybe a tad too present for my liking. I wish the herbs or the shrimp would have stood out better against the sherry. Croquetas was an interesting item. It was almost like having a cream of mushroom soup condensed to a near solid and then deep fried. It was surprisingly good, creamy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The calamari was well cooked, perfectly tender. These are among the most tender that I have had. The coating was excellent as well, not too thick and perfectly crunchy. The coating while texturally correct, needed some flare in the seasoning, it could have been something more than just salt there. The interior is poorly lit and personally I like quite a bit more light than one or two foot candles. Service was prompt, aware, and courteous. Price wise, we are talking 20+ per person for a good meal here. Overall, Jalapenos is hitting a solid 3 stars, possibly headed towards 4 if we could perk up the flavors here and maybe brighten up that dining room. read more

As others have said don't be fooled by the strip mall exterior, once you step inside you'll forget that is where Jalapenos is located. My husband and I had a great meal here, we started withstuffed jalapenos - very good. I had (can't remember what it was called) shredded beef with plantains and beans - very good. My husband had the traditional Paella. We shared the flan - not impressed. All in all a great experience, great service and comfortable interior. It was very crowded so on the weekends it probably wouldn't be an awful idea to call ahead. read more
