I always say my favorite restaurants are in a shopping center. All of tapas are great but the star for me is the dinner entree. I always enjoy the Vieras Saltedas. It includes Sea Scallops sauteed with sherry, basil, fish stock, and finished with heavy cream served with rice. Soooo good. The staff is always friendly and you can tell the food is truly authentic. I have only good things to say about Jalapeños. The service is attentive, the dining room is beautiful and intimate (with a fireplace and a waterfall), and the food is decadent. They have a regular menu of individual entrees, but the real joy of this experience is ordering multiple small plates. Truly, the food is so good you are going to want to try a little of everything. Most small plates are enough for 2 - 4 people to have either a big bite or a little taste and they are so reasonably priced for this type of dining. The food is truly wonderful. We had about 8 - 10 plates for 4 people, and it's hard to choose the best one. The lamb chops, ceviche, and beef dishes were superb, and what really made them over the top delicious were the array of flavorful, punch you in the throat sauces that they come with. We joked that they could have served us only bread and those sauces and we would have been happy with the meal. Also, don't sleep on dessert. It was just as good and is not to be missed. I'm not sure what kind of food this is. I wouldn't classify it as Mexican for sure. Is it Cuban? Spanish? There were al types of dishes on the menu like burritos, then Cuban dishes, tapas and even paella, sheesh. The squid ink rice was way too salty and just overly inky. It made me feel queasy. The pork chunks had a strange after taste in the sauce. The burrito had no flavor. Everything was off and the service was very slow. I don't recommend it. The food left me feeling ill. read more

I was thoroughly impressed with Jalapeños. It is located within a strip mall and once inside, I was very impressed with the entirety of the experience. The restaurant has a nice water feature, is kept clean throughout, has a full bar area, and Esteban did a fine job as our server. The waitstaff continually tended to us and serviced us at the opportune times of the meal. We shared a "La Clasica" Margarita (House Tequila, Triple Sec, Orange Liquor, and sour mix). The drink was perfectly made and we enjoyed every drop. We shared the following and both were delicious: Albondigas de Pollo (Spanish style chicken meatballs, sautéed with almonds and Spanish brandy cream sauce). Pollo al Ajillo (Diced chicken breast, sautéed with whole garlic, tomatoes, onions, brandy and herb butter). For dessert, we had a Flan (créme caramel). It had the perfect amount of sweetness, texture, and disappeared in seconds. I highly recommend Jalapeños and try to add it to your Annapolis itinerary. read more

Accessibility denied. Loyalty dismissed. I never thought I'd be writing this review, because I've been a fan of Jalapeños in Annapolis for decades. Unfortunately, today's experience was so disappointing that I feel it's necessary to share. At 4pm today, two friends and I arrived for Happy Hour. One of my friends is a senior, recovering from a stroke, and uses a cane. She was clearly unable to sit comfortably or safely at the high bar stools, so the host kindly seated us at a nearby table with regular chairs in the dining area. The restaurant was completely empty - because it's Monday at 4pm Shortly after, we were told the manager needed to "approve" Happy Hour service at that table. When he arrived, his response was that if he allowed it for us, he'd "have to allow it for everyone." This, despite the fact that THE RESTAURANT WAS EMPTY and we have supported this restaurant for years, spending countless evenings (and dollars) at the bar during Happy Hour. We left, and sadly, we won't be returning. Once the original owner/manager left, the service quality began to slip, but this was the final straw. To deny a loyal customer--who has accessibility needs--a simple accommodation in an empty restaurant shows a complete lack of customer service and compassion. After decades of being one of our local favorites, Jalapeños has lost us as customers. Deeply disappointing. read more

What a cozy restaurant. We had reservations for 6 and we were immediately seated. We were right next to a fireplace that felt wonderful with the cold, windy rain outside. The restaurant has that upscale vibe without a feeling of being overly stuffy. The food is more Spanish as opposed to Mexican and I can tell you it was fabulous. Our wait staff came almost immediately and took our drink orders, which were promptly served. We ordered multiple Tapas ( appetizers). A basket of warm bread and butter was served to us immediately as we waited for our order. Everything we ordered had wonderful flavors and presentation. The only thing we were disappointed with was the Croquettes, they tasted like deep fried mush. Everything else was delicious. And I was NOT disappointed :) The tapas menu here is expansive and everything was well cooked and seasoned. The staff was friendly, the margaritas were delicious, and the restaurant is beautiful. We split 5 tapas between 2 people which was the perfect amount. I took away one star because I think a few of the dishes were a little over priced for the amount of food, including the cost for chips and salsa. The only dish we didn't love was the stuffed jalapeños. And the only other dish we decided we wouldn't order again because of the price was the montadito de gambas y mermelada de higo (shrimp and fig crostini). I would definitely come back, preferably for happy hour, and I would lean heavily into the meat-centric tapas. read more

I have ALWAYS had a great experience here (and I've had a lot for sure). By far my favorite restaurant in Annapolis. Don't let the weird strip mall setting steer you away. Once you get inside it's adorable. There are a GAGILLION options to choose from - almost too many. All are fantastic in taste; some are less worth it from a size/price point perspective. But if you aren't made of money and that matters, just ask your server, and they'll be honest. My favorite main dishes are chile relleno and ropa vieja. This magical restaurant is located in your basic shopping strip, extremely accessible from the main road, and with ample parking available. If it's dinner or the weekend, do yourself a solid and make a reservation. They can book up pretty quickly and the wait can be substantial, but honestly worth it. Seating at the bar area is first come first serve and can be a viable option if you did not make a reservation. The bar area serves the whole menu. Some nights, I actually prefer the bar area because it's more laid back than the main dining area. Patrons are dressed in either casual attire or fancy pants. We love the entire vibe of this restaurant. They have live music some nights, a romantic fire place, great drinks. For food, I recommend ordering your heart's content of tapas. EVERYTHING is delicioussssss. Try it all until you throw up to clear space and keep eating. Our favorite dishes: Gambas Al Ajillo, Filete de Buey con Cabrales, Solomillo de Cerdo al Jerez ... but again, it's ALL divine. read more

Food was okay, although not as good as past times. Service was moderately good--waiter not very attentive, nor friendly. We had reservation (but not for any particular table) for dinner, party of 2. When we arrived, dining room was empty, but hostess seated us next to fireplace (without asking our preference). We arrived at 4 pm. We ordered appetizers, drinks, full meal, dessert, after dinner coffee. I was not finished with my coffee when the hostess asked us to leave and stated she had reservation at 6 pm for someone who had requested table by fireplace. She offered us seating at noisy bar on a football Sunday. There was only 1 other party in the dining room, thus many other tables were available. Hostess should have told us the table she was first placing us at was reserved at 6 pm, when we would have been happy to sit elsewhere in the dining room. After having dropped $141 plus tip on this experience, we will NEVER go back. We have for many years celebrated special events at Jalapenos. Sad that one of Annapolis' few remaining fine dining establishments now has such rude, substandard treatment of customers. read more

Was here with a party of 3 for a second visit this month, being new to Annapolis. The food is outstanding. Our server, Bryan, was also terrific. A delicious, relaxed meal. The guacamole served with warm tortilla chips is just perfect. My wife ordered chile relleno which was delicious. Today I ordered 2 tapas instead of a main dish- Chorizo Cantimpalo- thinly sliced well-done chorizo seasoned perfectly over a potato "con rajas". Delicious. I've been dying to get to this bookmarked place forever, it seems! It's kind of a weird location - in a strip mall behind the new and shiny stuff (other restaurants, shops, target, etc.) but is an awesome hidden gem! The minute you walk in the door, you feel like you've been transported to a Spanish country with beautiful Spanish and Mexican decor. For starters, the white sangria was the best I've ever tasted! Sooooooo yummy and it's made fresh with each order. The chips and salsa are freshly made and will cause you to devour immediately them at first taste! The Paella Valenciana and Paella Catalana was absolutely delicious! Very flavorful and plenty to eat, although someone ate all of theirs (not me)! Chips were stale and the salsa was as good as a local grocery store brand. Main dishes were fair. Food is overpriced. There was a screaming child nearby who was ignored by the parents who was screaming yelling crawling on the floor for over 20 minutes!
