I've been dying to get to this bookmarked place forever, it seems! It's kind of a weird location - in a strip mall behind the new and shiny stuff (other restaurants, shops, target, etc.) but is an awesome hidden gem! The minute you walk in the door, you feel like you've been transported to a Spanish country with beautiful Spanish and Mexican decor. For starters, the white sangria was the best I've ever tasted! Sooooooo yummy and it's made fresh with each order. The chips and salsa are freshly made and will cause you to devour immediately them at first taste! The Paella Valenciana and Paella Catalana was absolutely delicious! Very flavorful and plenty to eat, although someone ate all of theirs (not me)! I came across this restaurant here in Yelp. I noticed the good reviews. After browsing the menu, I decided to give it a try. Most Yelper mention that the restaurant is in a strip mall and the outside of the restaurant is not appealing and that is okay with me. The inside is nicely decorated. I sat by the fireplace place; It feels good in a cold day like today. Service was not good whatsoever. I was seated immediately. There was one more guest when I dine in. Tables are spaced out appropriately due to Covid (I felt safe dining in) My waitress did not talk much. I even asked her if she preferred for me to speak Spanish or English; She told me Spanish is more comfortable for her. I would ask her questions related to the drinks and the food I wanted to try, but she didn't said much. She just stayed quiet and walked away. Also, I felt like she was rushing me. The drinks and food was below average. My expectations about this place was very high. I order an Orchata and I was told they don't have any homemade drinks. Then, I order a margarita and it was too sweet for me. I only drank half of the margarita. Now, The food was a big let down. I tried to order the Trucha al Caldillo and I was told they were out of Trucha (Trout). Then I tried to order the Paella and the server told me it was going to take a long time. The only other appealing choice was to order Mix Fajitas ( Beef, Chicken and Shrimp). The Fajitas were very bland. The Shrimp tasted like it was pre cook and were very small. The beef was tough and chicken did not have seasoned at all. I came here for lunch and didn't have a good experience, I will come back for dinner and update my review accordingly then. Located in an older strip mall and looking very plain from the outside I let the Yelp reviews guide me and decided to try Jalepenos for my latest Mexican food craving. I also wanted to hit a spot that was bookmarked. It did not disappoint! Authentic Mexican and Spanish fare abounds with an extensive menu sure to have something to everyone's liking. We decided to do a few tapas and ordered chorizo, asparagus on a bed of bacon, duck, and hanger steak. We also started with chips and salsa (unfortunately not free) and a liter of sangria which was really good. The decor is cute and Spanish themed and there was a 1 man band playing on this Friday night. The locals definitely know this place as it was busy, but luckily we were able to get a table with no wait. Service was prompt and courteous and the food was amazing. A Spanish themed restaurant in the same area where the old Oriental Gardens used to be (back in the 1900s!). The old Annapolitans will remember that place but I digress... We've been here many times. It's a big space, with a nice bar when you walk in the door. Lots of tables, almost overwhelming when you walk in the door - but it's okay. The staff is obviously friendly and helpful. The menu is EXTENSIVE! Easier to ask the server what they recommend. Please don't be so predictable and get fajitas. Just kidding, I did and they are delicious. We got small plates this last time. It was delicious. The scallops and chili Con Queso were awesome. We went on a Sunday night and it was JAMMED. We were shocked at how many people were there. Then we realized it was Presidents Day Weekend. I don't know about you, but I have never had Presidents Day off...so I always forget about that "Holiday" but I digress once again.... I'm not quite sure how Jalapeños rates four stars, as I'm really pressed to give two based on our own dining experience. The menu is quite varied, with a wide selection of tapas, main plates, fajitas, burritos, and enchiladas - but, unfortunately, the dishes we ordered this particular evening were just not prepared at all well. The best part of our dinner was the chips and salsa, with both freshly made and with good flavor. We ordered a side of queso to go along with the chips, but it had the consistency of a thin soup, and all we could do with the chips was just push the queso around the bowl, hoping to get some onto the chips. We didn't fare much better with the entrées. I ordered the chicken chile relleno, something you don't often see on menus but, when well-prepared, is a great dish. Here, neither the chile nor the chicken had much flavor, and the best way I can describe the consistency of the chicken is that it was minced rather than pulled or shredded - more of a chicken spread than anything else. I found it rather unpleasing. My friend decided to order two tapas for dinner - a tortilla española that he only ate about a third of, with undercooked potatoes and a bit off on the seasoning, and croquetas that couldn't have arrived at the table looking more unappetizing, tossed on a plate after obviously spending too much time in the fryer. Elsewhere, croquetas are one of my favorites, but both of us gave these a resounding thumbs-down, leaving most of them behind. It's hard for me to remember an experience like this, where we actually left this much food on our plates - and, at the price point, that just shouldn't happen. I see that a lot of the positive reviews talk about happy hour, and maybe that's where Jalapeños' strength lies, but we knew just a few minutes into our dinner that this was a 'one and done'. read more

Dear God. Where do I begin? A friend and I got to the restaurant right around 4:00 when they opened for the day - had no clue there was a happy hour situation happening. We found a two top and ordered sangria right away. Our server recommended that over margaritas, so we rolled with it. So yummy and so smooth. They'll sneak up on you if you have too many, so pace yourself! I ordered the garlic shrimp and pork tacos. Both were amazing and perfectly cooked. You know how shrimp can get chewy when overcooked? Yeah, no. These were great and the sauce had the perfect amount of garlic and spice. The slow roasted pork tacos made my belly so happy. So tender and full of flavor. I almost wish I had ordered a second plate of those, but I went with the salmon after I had finished the other two dishes. The items are so affordable and the portions are the perfect size (during happy hour), so it's easy to keep going. I can't wait to go back. I have my eyes on the guacamole. read more

We came here for a bachelorette party (7 women) and were fortunate enough to be seated in one of their private rooms in the back. The room gave us more than enough space to spread out and to also be close enough to talk to each other. The staff was great in taking our orders and getting our drinks out quickly. The food was a bit slow to get to us and they did forget one of our tapas, but they quickly remedied that. Now onto the food. The filetitos de salmon tapas is a must have! You get a very generous portion, it melts in your mouth, and the flavor combination is delicious! In comparison the portabello mushroom tacos were good, but the flavor left something to be desired after having the salmon. Excellent and distinctive food. We had seven for dinner recently and everyone loved the flavorful food. Our son just returned from Spain and thought the flavors were comparable. We had appetizers and a couple of tapas for starters, great as well. My only critique is for the margaritas needed more tequila at 10 dollars a pop. Seafood paella is so good with lots of variety, ropa Virgo is delicious with wonderful plaintains, and the Chile Rellano is stuffed with cheese or meat in a classic Poblano Chile! Ok, let's get right into it: one of best happy hours in Annapolis!! It is a happy hour filled with plate after plate of delicious tapas and flowing with rivers of cool, tasty sangria. As far as the tapas go, Jalapeños stuff jalapeños won my heat, little morsels stuffed with creamy cheese and just the right amount of spicy kick. Their chili's rellenos were swimming in out of this world red sauce that conjured visions of old Mexico. Yes, the tapas were indeed scrumptious, but I did feel that their guacamole did need a bit of salt. But tasty food and refreshing drinks is only half the battle in finding the perfect happy hour. Jalapenos is located in a nondescript strip mall near a home depot and a dollar general. It's a long time local favorite and for good reason it has a warm and inviting ambiance that's paired with delicious food. We came in with a late reservation and they were able to seat my large group without a problem in their large back room. Their menu is part Spanish tapas and part Tex Mex. Honestly I would say their food shines more in the tapas and Spanish cuisine than their Tex Mex does. The guacamole is fresh and tastes great. The queso is alright, very spicy. The croquettes are delicious and a must try. I highly recommend getting the paella and ropa vieja as well.
