Jake's used to be one of the best places to grab a breakfast in Bend. That has changed. The serving sizes are still huge but the quality is average at best and the service in mediocre as well. I very much enjoyed eating at Jake's Diner. Go hungry or plan on splitting a meal with one or two friends. They are HUGE! I did read the reviews and saw how other people mentioned this and my wife suggested we split, but I guess my manhood was at stake, so we each ordered our own. My wife went for the short stack of pancakes (two cakes) as she wasn't that hungry. When they arrived I was surprised they weren't brought on a fork lift. These pancakes were 12 inches across. No...I am not exaggerating. Go see for yourself. My wife ate half of one and was done. I ordered the standard bacon and eggs, and while I finished it, I am a big eater Unlike many restaurants, the hash browns were cooked all the way through and were delicious. While we were there, the Bend Band of Brothers (a military veteran organization) was having a gathering. Imagine about 50+ war veterans in one place. I wish I had a couple hours to just sit down and listen to many of them share their story. It looked as if there were veterans from every war starting with World War II. It was awesome! read more

The food here is really good. I sometimes go just for the Monte Cristo sandwich. Something so simple yet I never make it at home. The omelets are huge and you'll have plenty of food to take home. I don't usually order biscuits at restaurant because how can you keep those things soft when you don't know when people will be eating them? However, I have had biscuits and gravy here a few times and they are always soft and yummy. I will say this place is LOUD! It's one cavernous space, except for back meeting rooms and seasonal patio. There are often crying kids and elderly people yelling at each other. Not Wal-Mart yelling. Just yelling to be heard. The wait staff is always pleasant and circling with coffee for refills. Jake's is my favorite truck stop. The service is friendly, the restaurant has been clean since their remodel and the food is exactly what you want from a truck stop. Atmosphere: The feel is that of a diner with photos lining the wall with antique cars and happy faces. The restaurant is aged and fixtures dated to the 2000's interior theming. Water glasses are Pepsi plastic cups and overused (scratched, cracked, and dirty). Silverware is cheaper than Denny's or Sherie's silverware. This place is in need of reinvestment and some love! The lack of upkeep destroys the charm! It's a shame... :-/ Front Of House: We arrived as a group of 10 on Valentine's Day. We knew we would have to wait. Thus front of house said 25 minutes. We waited outside patiently. After 15 minutes one of us suggested to the front of house that we would gladly split our table into two tables of 5. She acknowledged the request. After this things sucked. More than 8 tables were filled with 4-6 people groups and we were visually at the top of the list for the full 40 minute wait. 40 minutes passed before we got our table. This is unacceptable anywhere. Today is a busy day as a holiday and to help staff, the restaurant should have created a simplified menu. Food Review: The food was actually decent. I love Jake's! My husband and I travel to Bend a lot and try to go there every time! The price you pay for the food is more than reasonable. The portions are HUGE! The last time we went, I got the stuffed hasbrowns and had enough left over for lunch too! The stuffed hasbrowns are even one of the smaller plates! My nephew got the mashed potato omelette, and I bet he's still trying to eat it! Unless you're a competitive eater, stick with the small omelette because it's huge and I can't imagine what the large omelette looks like! I'm never disappointed in the food. I wouldn't say it's this crazy, creative cuisine, but they are fairly simple, enormous, yummy dishes. More like comfort food your grandma would make you. I gave 4 stars because the service isn't the best. The food comes piping hot, but the waitress will take your order, get your drinks, disappear until the food is ready, bring the food and then disappear until you track her down and ask for your check. Our visit today was quite rough. I took my kiddos here on a snow day. We ordered various breakfast items and hot chocolate. The hot chocolate (the most important part for kids!) was spot on. Piled high with whipped cream. My youngest ordered the child's portion of biscuits and gravy. Once it arrived and before she dug in, she said that her meal smelled bad. Sure enough, something was way off. Upon tasting it, the gravy was very spoiled. Awful, awful. We couldn't escape the smell. We would have informed our server but she never came back. Huge portions, delicious home cooked breakfast for a fair price. My wife got a brownie to take home and loved it. I chose a cinnamon roll and was disappointed it weighed about 4 pounds and strangely had some kind of nut in it. I went to Jake's after an early Dr. appointment for breakfast. First breakfast out since the lock-down. Jake's hasn't changed since I was last there. Food is really good and plentiful... you won't leave hungry! The service is the same as before also, which is not stellar. If you are not one of the "regulars", you kind of get ignored. I was in town for business and my schedule was delayed so I Yelped the nearest diner because as far as breakfast goes, you can't beat a diner. Much to my pleasure it was in fact a great breakfast and the portions were huge. When I got to the hospital I had mentioned eating there and they asked my if my breakfast was served on one plate ore two. I had the pleasure of brushing elbows with the Oregon Band of Brothers. Six of us showed up for brunch at 11:30am so we missed the early crowd although it was still very busy. We were seated immediately on the deck. This place has great service. Our server immediately noticed we were getting direct sun, so she offered to move us, but we were fine, so she adjusted the umbrella perfectly anyway and we were all happy she did. The food came within 15 minutes of placing the order and it was outstanding. Yuuuuuuuge portions but the quality was right on. My eggs came perfectly "over medium", all sides were hot, the biscuit was light and flaky and did I mention yuuuuuuuge? We took three boxes of leftovers home. If you are looking for excellently executed high quality breakfasts, this is not the place. This is like home cooked diner breakfasts. I contemplated rating as a 3 but decided the homemade berry stuffed French toast was a 5 so bumped the rating up and the service was great. I stopped right at opening 6am for take out. I had coffee while I waited. The server refilled my cup several times despite being the only one there and tables filling up pretty fast. The decor is very diner. Not fancy at all but felt comfortable. Appeared many people there were regulars. I like that feeling:) very homey. The biscuits and gravy were just ok. The biscuit was fluffy but the gravy was a little bland. It did have a decent amount of sausage. This plate also came with scrambled eggs and bacon for about $11. It was huge. The breakfast quesadilla was huge also. It was actually like it was stuffed too full with salsa, cheese, eggs, sausage and bacon! The hash browns were cooked perfectly!!! The shredded Browns cooked nice and crispy without being raw in the center. Yum. Once again, the berry stuffed French toast was the favorite. I use to go get coffee there at 3am when it was still an actual truckstop and within walking distance of my house (which was the only cool thing about it). Even in a drunken haze this food sucked a fatty. It is ironically large portions of food that you will not want to eat. Straight out of a Sysco jar. The fruit topping on waffles is literally a jar of cheap pie filling . . . I don't know what else to say. Jake's has been a favorite of ours for a long time. I've had many of the items on the menu. Today it was the chicken parmesan and it was awesome!! Nice big piece of chicken and they are not stingy with the sauce either. Brough almost half of it home because they truly do have the biggest portions in Central Oregon (and beyond). My wife had bacon, eggs, hash browns and toast and she was also pleased with it. Our server was very attentive, checking on us several times and making sure my soda was refilled before I could empty the glass. Glad that this Bend landmark is still open. it's always fun to bring out of town visitors here to see the expressions on their faces when they see the massive servings.
