Crispy Calamari
Ash H.

My coworker and I chose Jake's in Del Mar to celebrate our birthdays and I'm so glad we did! The beachfront location and ocean views were incredible. We lucked out with a table right by a huge open window, letting in the cool sea breeze. The food was fantastic! We started with the appetizer Crispy Calamari, which was a bit small on the portion size, but thick, tender, and quite flavorful. My Spanish Frittata with a lobster claw was amazing and the birthday Hula Pie they brought out for us was massive and tasted divine! Our waiter was friendly and attentive. He recommended the Sesame Chickpea Roasted Local Fish for my coworker, which she enjoyed. We just wish he knew what kind of local fish it was. He wasn't able to tell us. After lunch, we loved being able to walk straight out onto the sand for a beach stroll. Just be warned that parking can get a bit crazy and packed. Would recommend either getting there early or using the public parking across the street. The public parking ended up being full so we used valet. It was reasonably priced and saved the day! Overall, we had a wonderful time and I would definitely come back!

Lovely restaurant on the beach in Del Mar with excellent service. Staff was very knowledgeable about gluten intolerance. I was able to have drinks, dinner and dessert, watch a beautiful sunset and feel OK afterwards. The items made without gluten are clearly marked on the menu. And there were several choices.

Street parking was a bit difficult to find but valet was easy and only $10. We were seated with a great view of the beach! Service was quick and the food was delicious. Our server was friendly professional and even gave my daughter a free dessert as it was her birthday. The view of the beach maybe my favorite you can simply walk to the water from your table window (definitely not recommending but you're that close it's tempting)

This seafood is a winner when you are looking for ambience and a good view. The restaurant is overlooking the ocean. We went on a really cool and windy day so we were not able to enjoy the beach. Sitting in the restaurant was great. Food was good but did not really stand out . I would have given them a 3 but gave them a 4 because of the great view, awesome staff and fast service. Seafood bowl - good and tasty, the risotto was a little overcooked, good portion of fish, mussels and lobster Ahi tostada- taste great and a good appetizer to start Calamari - crispy but with too much breading

Location next to beach. Amazing! I don't know if I just keep ordering the wrong dishes or the food is really just average....but it seems like it used to be better years ago. The daily fish plate was fine but it came out lukewarm. I also got email from OpenTable saying that I didn't show up to the reservation which was odd. I guess they didn't check us in on Open Table? Our service today was great, though!

Lovely location right on the beach. Ordered the poke bowl with greens, instead of rice, for a lighter lunch. It was just right with fresh fish and tasty seasoning. My friend enjoyed their burger immensely! And I enjoyed having some of her fries. Reasonable cost for the location and quality food

We had such a wonderful experience! The restaurant has an incredible view of the beach and the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a great meal. The service was excellent! Everyone was friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. And the food was absolutely delicious! Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared.

I am going to start with saying that this place has great customer service and if you get lucky it has a nice view. Unfortunately the food did not meet the expectations. We were in town for a couple of nights and wanted to go to a nice place for our last evening there and were told this was the place to be. I made reservations over the phone and was able to get a table for two. We arrived and lucky for us we took an Uber there because there parking lot was full to capacity and cars were parked in front of other cars . I am sure the valet guys have a system down. We ordered some cocktails as soon as we were seated , the first one my husband ordered apparently they could not make even through my husband saw that they had the ingredients for it. So he had to change his drink order. For appetizer we ordered the yellow tail crudo sashimi, it was fresh and looked great but it lacked flavor. The citrus flavor was there but it needed something else. For our entree my husband ordered the steak and shrimp plate. It was served with mashed potatoes and green beans. The steak was a top sirloin and it looked good but he said it needed seasoning. He was disappointed. I ordered the seafood stew served that comes with some mussels, fish, shrimp and a tiny little lobster and served on top of a risotto cake. I must say that I have had better seafood stews. I ordered a side of bread because usually I want to clean the sauce of my plate , but that didn't happen with this sauce. We skipped dessert and called it a night.

Jake's Del Mar was our family's favorite meal while visiting the San Diego area! The ambience was stunning, especially around sunset with the beach right in front of us. We started with the ceviche and calamari, and both were really fresh and yummy. For my main meal, I went with the lemon garlic roasted fish, and it was delicious! For dessert, we had the famous Hula Pie, and our table of 3 could barely finish it. It was the perfect way to end the meal. Service was also friendly and fast. Overall, an amazing place for a sunset dinner!

Went to Jake's twice in one week -- once to celebrate our daughter earning straight A's in college, and again for a business meeting. Both visits were wonderful experiences! Jake's is such a beautiful place to enjoy a meal. While the serving sizes aren't huge, the food is absolutely delicious and thoughtfully prepared. I discovered my new favorite lunch item: the steak wedge. I'm not a fan of blue cheese, so I ordered it with a side of ranch and vinaigrette instead, and wow -- it was amazing! I also ordered a virgin piña colada, even though it wasn't on the menu, and it was fantastic. The staff was accommodating, the atmosphere was great, and everything about our visits made us want to come back again. We'll definitely be back. Cheers!

Duke's Mai Tai
Marisa T.

Great service & location is amazing! Tiny parking lot that you have to valet in. Valet is $8 for lunch & $10 for dinner. The guys out there are hustling! Tip them extra. Mai Tai was good but they're better at Duke's. My husband got the mango slushie with rum but it wasn't really a slushy. It was much too liquidy to be a slushy. Had a great flavor though. The fish tacos were good but also better at Duke's. The poke bowl I didn't enjoy. Flavor just wasn't there. I'm not sure I'd return as I enjoy the food much better at Duke's but you can't beat the ambience here.

Ceviche- fresh and tasty, I would order again!

Pretty damn nice view of the Pacific Beach here and decided to take myself out after a pretty grueling couple of weeks of work, which included weekends. I like my work immensely, but also need to recharge too. My motto in life is, "work hard, play harder, you only got this one life, make it count." I asked chatGPT to find me a place in Del Mar that has sick ocean views and no matter how I asked chatGPT this question, Jake's kept popping up as number one. I needed some lunch so came in here after 3pm, and it was closer to happy hour. As soon as you walk in, you just see the ocean and it just calms you. I sat down at the bar and it wasnt too busy but with a few people. This place is for grown ups, so act like one. It had a laid back, ocean vibe so very relaxed for sure. Bartender very professional, and very courteous. Poured me a blonde to get started and gave me time to chose my food. There is happy hour here but not too many selections. Today, it was choices of some of flatbreads and a salad and I wasnt interested. Happy hour only Mon - Wed anyways. I wasnt terribly hungry so ordered the ceviche. I love fish, doesn't matter how you make it, as long as its good, I will like it. Ceviche was spot on fresh and yummy and appreciate a bit of avocado added. It was the perfect snack, while watching the ocean view and washing it all down with an ice cold blonde. A perfect gown up way to spend the afternoon celebrating life and how gorgeous Mother Nature is. There is valet parking here which is $8 and peak times $10. I was able to find free 2 hour parking on the street though. Bathroom was clean and everything about this place would bring me back in again. I cant wait to show off this place to friends and family when they come visit me!

Ask the Community - Jake's

Do they have a private room to rent for 20-25 diners?

Jake's doesnt currently book large parties or events, but it has information on discussing a future event https://jakesdelmar.com/plan-an-event/

Do they have happy hour?

No but they have a brunch menu on the weekends

Valet or self parking?

Yes, it has valet for 7 dollars at jakes, public parking across the street in a lot more.... Go with valet......

What is the corkage fee at Jake's? Thank you!

I believe it is $15.00/bottle

Do you have a patio?

Yes they have a patio that overlooks the water

Do you have breakfast during the week?

Only on Sundays.

Kid-friendly? Can accommodate a big group (~20)?

You would need to make advance plans for a large group. It is a very popular place, and even with a reservation, you can expect to wait. I do believe they have a kids menu but I did not see any children there when we dined there.

Do they have happy hour?

I believe they do, I just have been there for lunch YUM and WONDERFUL in every way.

What time is The happy hour specials?

I am not sure since COVID but it was at 5, go at 5:30 and you will not be disappointed.

What their specialty/ what dish you recommend to eat for dinner?

Three things to recommend: Achiote Roasted Fish; Crusted Ahi; Seared Scallops. A personal favorite is the Fresh Fish Caesar Salad when they have the grilled Norwegian salmon. I order my fish grilled medium rare, which they do nicely.

How is the indoor dining environment when it comes to ventilation, i.e. are the windows as well as doors opened for natural ventilation?

Yes, especially if you are seated by the beach front windows or on the patio

Can our dog comej?

I'm not sure but usually on the patio it's ok.

Do you have to make reservations?

Yes I wouldn't go without one. They might take a few walk ins but this is a reservation spot! Just use OpenTable and it's pretty easy.

Is it dog friendly?

Unless you have a service dog than definitely not. This is a place that is indoors and most people get dressed up to go. There isn't a large patio area and it's upscale. You may want to try a more casual location! Service dogs are accommodated…

Luckily my friend didn't say nothing was calm got up went to the bathroom with friends to clean up came back & just said, this sucks I just had my hair done. The waiter could have offer a free drink or appetizer at least. Then when the bill came & we paid we noticed all our checks were wrong some of us paid for other people's items. They didn't know how to fix it so we just fixed it ourselves by paying each other on Venmo what ever we owed each other. It was an inconvenience, food was good tho & spot very nice & loved the burger but not sure I'll come back because it is a bit pricey & just expected a bit more customer service wise.

From start to finish, this was a 10/10 experience, and every bite exceeded our expectations. We started with the Chicken Fried Lobster Tail and Torched Scallops topped with caviar, and both were phenomenal! For our main course, we shared the 22oz bone-in ribeye cooked to a perfect medium. It was juicy, tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection! The sides were just as incredible: Shells N Cheese, Blistered Shishito Peppers, and Boursin Whipped Mash. We honestly couldn't pick a favorite! A detail we loved was the heated plates that kept our food warm throughout the meal. It's the little touches that make a difference! A huge shoutout to our server, Ean, who made the evening extra special! He was attentive, energetic, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the menu. As a foodie, I LOVE when a server makes thoughtful recommendations and shares their enthusiasm for the food. Ean delivered on every level! His assistant, Raul, was equally awesome and helped make the service exceptional. We felt so well taken care of by the entire team! To top it all off, we were gifted a complimentary Vanilla Caramel Cake for dessert! It was decadent and delicious, reminiscent of butter cake but just a tad sweeter. Served warm with vanilla ice cream, it was absolutely heavenly! The warm cake and cold, creamy ice cream were the perfect combination and such a thoughtful birthday surprise. Steak 48 exceeded every expectation. Amazing food, impeccable service, and an elevated atmosphere made this the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. 10/10 across the board! The service was excellent, as befits a $$$$ restaurant. The ambiance was elegant. The toilets were heated (amazing. I guess this is how the wealthy live) Must Order: - Bone-in ribeye: Beautifully marbled piece of beef with a nice sear. I usually order medium & it arrived just a touch under (which is fine, this is what I expect every time I order medium) - Sauteed sweet corn: Hint of caramelized flavor. My only complaint is that there needed to be twice as much of it. - Creamed spinach and artichoke: The brightness of the greens shines just enough to make you think this counts as one of your servings of vegetables for the day. - Boursin cheese whipped potatoes: Creamy herbed potatoes. Better than any mashed potato I have ever made, which means there is probably more cheese and butter and calories than I would ever put in my homemade potatoes. Thank goodness this restaurant doesn't post nutrition facts next to the dish. - Shells and cheese: Grown up Mac and cheese for a more discerning palate. Don't order: - Steakhouse meatballs: Nothing special about the flavor - Chicken fried lobster tails: If anything chicken fried or lobster tastes great, then why not BOTH? Well, the combination wasn't that much better than a regularly priced lobster tail (or a chicken fried steak) so it was an overrated dish that I wouldn't order again on my own. - As a side note, I added burrata for $10 as an "enhancement" to my bone-in rib eye. I debated adding the crab cake but I wanted to preserve the flavor of the steak as being the focal point of the entree. Well, the steak was certainly the focal point. The burrata was an insult. The tiniest but of burrata with absolutely ZERO flavor. -1 star & I feel like I was owed $10 for allowing that to be part of my ribeye dish
