The attitude from staff came across as rude and dismissive, which made the situation even more frustrating. My friend payed for his food with Apple Cash and the system took the money then the employee told me it hadn't gone through. When the money on my friend's end was gone. This being the systems fault we were told they couldn't do anything about it leading to us paying once again for the over priced meal. Prices continue to go up, portions seem to get smaller, and customer service has gone downhill. I don't mind paying for quality food, but I do expect fair portions and respectful treatment. Unfortunately, that's not what I experienced here.

I have been a big fan of Jake's for several years. It's on my "must-go" list when I am in Bakersfield. The pulled pork sandwich is delicious. The meat is always fresh and full of flavor. My favorite thing about Jakes is the dessert! You must get the chocolate cake with the chocolate frosting! It's a huge slice, available right next to the register as you pay. This cake is so good, my sister bought a couple sheet cakes from them for her wedding cake and it was a huge hit with all her wedding guests. If you love chocolate cake, you MUST go to Jakes! The cake is moist and the chocolate frosting is to die for, one of the best I've ever had and I LOVE dessert! The other dessert I have recently fallen in love with is the chocolate chip cookie sandwich, two chocolate chip cookies sandwiched between Jake's famous chocolate frosting! I can never decide between the cake and the cookies so I just get both, you only live once ;) All of their desserts are located right next to the cash register while you are paying, you can't miss them. The only negatives I can say about Jakes is that parking sucks! They have a tiny lot, and unless you get lucky and someone is leaving when you pull in, you will have to circle around the neighborhood looking for parking. Also, the inside of the restaurant is pretty small, so if you go during a busy time (at the peak lunch hour) there might not be any tables open. Also, I've gone to Jake's several times and they've been closed, so double check that they are open if you don't live close by. All in all, its a great spot with one of the best cakes I've ever tasted. If you go here and don't get the cake, you are insane! Oh well, more for me ;) read more

I usually get the deep pit which is flavorful and tender. I've had the chicken as well, and it's not bad, but I prefer the beef. The beans are merely ok, but I really like the broccoli salad. The corn bread is good, but not the best I've eaten. The chocolate sheet cake is moist and tender, but only if you get it fresh. I made the mistake of sending out for lunch (with cake) from my office and the cake was unusually dry. All of us who ordered the cake concurred that the cake had to be day old. I won't make that mistake again. I'll make sure I ask if the cake was baked fresh the next time I order. The frosting on the cake is light and creamy but a tad too sweet for my taste. The cafeteria style serving goes pretty quickly, but if you get there after 6:00pm, you'll have difficulty finding a parking spot and there will be a line. Overall this establishment has stick to your ribs food that is tasty and if fresh is satisfying. But it is not a four or five star eatery in my opinion. read more

Where do I begin? Okay this establishment was recommended as a local Bakersfield fav, and as a non local visiting should advise it be a non local destination. We stopped in for dinner while on our way to Sacramento and immediately had great expectations by the awesome decor and vibe of the quaint,not so quaint restaurant. It immediately went downhill with service when the thin asian gal was very abrupt, and rude with me and my family. As we traversed down the line with our trays to the register to be greeted by a snobbish gal who pretty much just took our money, gave us our food and not even a smile or a "thank you have a great day" After this awful service I decided to have it to go, only to find our food was bagged wrong and pretty much when we opened up our dishes we felt that only horses, and pigs should be fed slop. I would of gave it 1 star but felt that the owner with awesome taste in decor should not be penalized for the bad service that incurred. read more

I have been away at college for three years and when I came home, I was craving the chocolate sheet cake. It was even more amazingly yummy now than I remember. It is a definite must at the cash register. I had the lighter side pit beef salad. The pit beef was delicious and I don't know how light it actually was, but it was still really good. I had never been interested in coming into this establishment but my father insisted. As Mexican Americans who were born in California, we felt unwelcomed here. Service was alright but the food is very americanized. As we got our food and sat down, the other costumers (who were white) just stared at us. Jake's is a must stop when in Bakersfield. My wife is from Bako and we stop at Jake's every time we are in town for lunch. You can't go wrong with getting Jakes original pit sandwich with BBQ sauce and a nice slice of cake. The cake is actually so good that my sister-in-law had it as her wedding cake, to the delight of all her guests. 5 stars for the cake! Tip: Always get dessert, even if you are full, just take it to go! read more

Okay, let's not get carried away. This is a buffet style eatery. But if you're looking to avoid a 2-3 hour sit down meal, it's hard to beat Jakes. I visited Jakes on numerous occasion during the summer of 2012 with guests from Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Prices are so reasonable and the food is so fresh. I literally drive in to Bakersfield from Lamont or Edison during lunch each week to pick up lunch for myself and the office. The food is spectacular. I definitely recommend trying to get there when they open or get a phone order in early if picking up for more than yourself. I usually get the pit beef sandwich or a chicken plate with as many kinds of potatoes as I can add to it. read more
