Came by for some takeout. Overall food was ok, but packaging was poor. Soup leaked in transport and I got broth all over the paper bag and in the trunk of my car :( I was going to get the lunch specials but as I was ordering the lady abruptly said that they are not offering lunch specials during the Covid-19 Pandemic (which sadly we are still in at the time of this visit and the writing of this review). Ok, no problem, I got the Dinner 2B instead. The menu price was $30.95 but the price went up as I was charged $32.95. I get it, the Pandemic has been hard for some businesses. It took about 20 minutes, so I left and drove to a nearby cafe to get a drink. When I came back about 25 minutes later the food was ready and waiting for me. It was in a paper bag and stapled at the top. I put it in my trunk and drove home. When I got home, I opened my trunk and the paper bag was wet and ripped. Some of the containers were rolling around in my trunk. The soup had leaked and the inside of my trunk was wet with broth. I was very thankful that I asked to have the Wonton soup instead of the Hot and Sour soup. I think the latter would have been a bigger mess. So I brought the food into the house and I saw that there was a small hole in the lid of the soups. Gah! I guess this is good for venting of the soup, but very bad for transport! If you get takeout from this place and get soup, make sure you secure the bag, so it stays completely upright. Anyway, the food itself was ok overall, some dishes were better than others. The Wonton soup was pretty good. You get 2 wontons per soup. There was a good amount of filling (ground pork), so they weren't mostly wrapper. The broth had green onions and Chinese cabbage in it. It was not too salty. The General Tao Chicken had a spicy kick to it, which I liked. It was all dark meat though, but not too gristley at least. The batter was a bit soggy. However, the flavour was good. This dish did not contain any vegetables. The Hunan Beef was a bit chewy. It too had a nice spicy kick to it. This dish had lots of vegetables in it: broccoli, onions, carrots, water chestnuts, celery, green peppers, and baby corn. It also had mushrooms. The chicken fried rice was mostly plain fried rice, with a few small pieces of chicken here and there. It was ok. The spring rolls were also ok, but nothing to write home about. It had ground pork and onions in it. Overall, not a bad meal, but I personally did not find it anything special that would make it stand out in a crowd. Although, it's not a bad choice if you live in the area. I noticed that they do sell dim sum, which is not that easy to find in Ottawa, let alone the suburbs of Ottawa, so they do have that going for them. This place has been opened for a while that I would just drive by over the years thinking it's a hole into he wall. Well they actually deserve that illustrous title. It's a husband wife team and elder daughter helping out. Don't expect top notch service, and there is a bit of wait. Don't let that deter the food that is to come. We sat Friday night and ordered Yang Chow fried rice, lemon chicken, stir fry snow peas and Singapore fried noodles. The fried rice came first and it was typical but had a signature wok flavour and seasoned just right. Not salty, not bland and you feel like seconds. The lemon chicken was a bit westernized like gigantic chicken balls with thick light dough. It was good and has its merit, my kids like it yet I would pass next time since I've had better. I prefer a light crispy lemon chicken. The snow peas.. wow. This chef does it right! Tender, crispy at same time, seasoned just right that you taste the sweetness of the snow peas. Must repeat. For the grand finale, the Singapore fried noodles. I eat around the world and spend a lot of time at nice Chinese restaurants in Toronto and the Singapore fried noodles is a 10 star here! There is a bit of heat in the dish, yet the wok skill and flavours are just so well balanced, right level of curry for savoury richness, condiments all cooked and mixed well. I've eaten a lot of weak, bland and unbalanced Singapore fried noodles and I am impressed. This will be my staple dish here. They got me as a repeat customer after ignoring them for years. read more

Came for the dim sum with a group shortly after the restaurant opened on a Friday morning. The chef wad delayed in traffic, so had to wait 40 minutes to order. The dim sum was okay, not great. The staff tried to accomodate us while we were waiting, howver, once the food finally arrived, the dim sum was not worth the wait. read more

I'm speaking as a Toronto native, from Hong Kong who have had dim sum in Toronto, San Fran, NYC and Hong Kong. My family is very picky about restaurants, preferring family owned restaurants where food is freshly prepared. Jade Yi's did not disappoint us. Our server was one of the owners (the wife) and her husband is the chef. Food is freshly made, unlike many Chinese restaurants where factory prepared food is finished for serving. We had a selection of dim sum dishes, General Tso's chicken, hot and sour soup, and several other dishes. Everything was cooked to perfection, and piping hot when it came to the table. The General Tso's chicken did not have the unnatural red colour that you see in most places. Less artificial colour is A-OK by us! The chicken pieces were plump and tender, and the spice was perfect. The hot and sour soup had a nice creamy consistency and was the perfect balance between hot and sour. We were offered a free dessert item and when we couldn't choose, the server brought us some of both items. Very nice touch! It is so nice to have the option of dim sum dishes on a regular menu! This is the chef's specialty and were tender and delicious. Very obviously they were made from scratch. We have ordered take-out several times which was also fantastic. This restaurant has earned its place on our short list and we are doing our part to make sure it survives. read more

People in Kanata remember fondly the Hong Chow restaurant on Hazeldean Road. Something mysterious happened there, resulting in a disastrous change of hands, followed by an abrupt closure. I'd love to know the real story there. But do not despair. Yesterday, we tried Jade Yi's Kitchen beside the fire station on Teron Road. I will start by telling you we got a small container of fried rice, with a styrofoam top, and the word "Free" hand-scrawled on it. Not a big deal to some, but to the once-loyal fans of the Hong Chow, this is like a signature! I stress I don't know any of the backstory here, but it looks to me like the Hong Chow is back. Now to the food: (sorry, it's just such an intriguing story). It's on a par with the better area Chinese takeouts, Lucky Dragon and Rideau. The egg rolls were plump and tasty. (Oddly, they offer pinched egg rolls at a very slightly reduced price). The chicken in General Tao's was fresh and soft. No complaints. The sauces were the standard "sauce in a bucket" type, except, possibly the very spicy micro-sauce that came with the Dim Sum pork shui mai, which, incidentally, had a piece of gristle in it. The flavours were good, but perhaps not very intense. When I was inspecting the menu on the window, a chef came out and handed me the brochure. The staff was pleasant, perhaps just learning the drill (it has only been open a week at the time of writing). We had the takeout. The prices are a little more than Lucky Dragon, but not by much. The rather pricey dim sum menu takes it over the top, though. Still, I don't think the shui mai were bought frozen, they were big and plump. Overall, competent, tasty, slightly pricey. The location is definitely great for us, but not, I expect, for many. If I had to predict, I'd say it could be in trouble because of the location. The previous restaurant on this site, Aiyara, was good quality, but folded at this site. I think there is an expectation that the hi-tech lunch trade will sustain them, so many restaurants close or go "quality-dim" in the afternoon in this area. read more

Proper Chinese restaurant. For me the real reason to go here is the dim sum. Admittedly, dim sum is like bbq, to each their own. But, I've sought out dim sum all over the world, from China to SFBay, so I know dim sum. This is proper dim sum, made fresh, with traditional flavours. This has become our go to, as driving to Chinatown in YOW has become a chore, and Yi's is at least as good, or better, IMO. The bao, pan seared dumplings and sui mai are especially good. If there had been a small sink near the door, I could believe I was in China.They also have a very large menu, blending many regional cuisines, but largely a Canadese greatest hits. If you're craving Canadese, you'll be happy, too. Not fancy. Free parking. Good prices. Solid/friendly service for type. Delicious. read more

They advertise dim sum but they only carry a few items and they are ridiculously overpriced. We didn't order dim sum after seeing the menu. I just ordered Singapore noodles, they were OK, the shrimps were very very tiny. I don't think I'd be going back but my husband and I would be regular customers if they expanded their dim sum menu and made the prices reasonable (example shrimp har kau is normally around 2.75 an order of four dumplings at most dim sum restaurants I've been to in various cities). When we see dim sum advertised we are looking for turnip cake, shrimp noodle rolls, beef balls, etc. lots of variety which they did not have at all. read more

We ordered Take Out delivered to our hotel room. Food arrived on time and hot. Everything we ordered was excellent. I ordered Szechuan Shrimp and it was nice and spicy. Everything was very fresh and tasty. And we got a FREE order of fried rice. Sometimes Take Out to a hotel is not very good, but this was not the case. Delivery is Free. I would not hesitate to order again. As a matter of fact, I wish we had something this good at home. read more

I ordered the combination plates. The chicken balls and the general Tao chicken. The chicken balls were ok pretty much what you would expect. The General Tao was not what I expected. It wasn't spicy and had a pineapple taste to it. The chicken fried rice and chow mein were fine but there are better places. Probably won't go again. read more

To begin, we loved loved loved Aiyara, the former tenant of this restaurant building. And we loved Hong Chow. And Mr Chopsticks. When we saw that Aiyara was gone, we decided to give Jade Yi a go. By item: Chicken fried rice: really bland Chicken with Cashew nuts: spongy, gummy, no spice at all Basil Beef: beef was fine, peppers fine, onions were raw in it. Chicken balls: very greasy and hard, dry chicken inside. A red sauce that was orange and tasted very different from the usual dark red version. - Not possible to order without MSG steamed rice: as expected. They are a new restaurant, so maybe they will work out the kinks over the next while. But for us, not a do-over. On a Friday night, the food arrived very quickly and was nice and hot. We wish the restaurant lots of luck. They are just not for us. read more

When it comes to Chinese food I am very picky, and I get in the mood for one or two types (authentic and North American). When the family wants a tasty delivery, we turn to Chinese and I'm happy to say that there is an alternative in the area. We ordered for the first time ever, and chose the combo plate #1 rice, chow mein, general Tao chicken. It comes with a closed end egg roll that seemed to be the standard fare, but we also ordered their open ended egg roll and it tasted home made and came with home made plum sauce. Not as good as Golden Palace, but a very nice surprise. The chicken chow mien tasted fresh and not the same as everyone else's, lots of carrots instead of celery. Could use more chicken. The General Tao Chicken was tender not overly battered, and the sauce was not thick and red. It could have been much much hotter and I personally like it when there are peppers and onions. The rice was good, but nothing special. My hubby always orders garlic sauce for his rice and we have been charged up to 1.25 for a little sauce, they included it free - which did not go unnoticed. The price is a little higher than my stand by Phu Yen, but the quantity was substantial. Both of us were unable to complete our meals. I will call on them again and try a few more items. I like that their family meals and combo plates have more choices than the usual places. read more

Not sure if the menu has changed from when others reviewed it but personally, the sauces all seem to be freshly made and definitely not 'sauce in a bucket' as one person mentioned. No crazy fluorescent colours or gluey texture like the typical bright red sweet and sour sauce, more natural colors and superb flavours. I've tried the sweet and sour, lemon and garlic sauces on chicken balls and cannot pick my favorite of the three. The fried rice is yummy as are the spare ribs. I've had the general tso chicken and beef with vegetable dishes and they were amazing. When ordering combination plates, you are hard pressed to eat everything included as portions are generous. Then there are the eggrolls... I have been looking for somewhere in Kanata - for at least 5 years - that has excellent eggrolls and I finally found them. Dense and meaty and not just full of bean sprouts. The seasoning is lovely and the open ended ones are almost a meal on its own - Ok, maybe two of them could be a meal. Plum sauce has a terrific flavour and it's not served cold in a squirt bottle like most places. Rather, its served warm in a dish with a spoon. Unfortunately, the decor is from at least two previous tenants and a couple of decades ago. Luckily, the food eclipses the previous asian restaurant and is the best Chinese in Kanata for sure and top 5 in Ottawa. It tastes like the food is made fresh including the sauces putting many other places to shame. Trying to spread the word so this place doesn't end up under appreciated. If you really like Chinese food, not looking for somewhere grand and luxury, this is the place to go. I have been there dozen of times with family and friends. This family-run restaurant is not big and fancy, but the food is surprisingly good. Their chef's special are Yu Hsaing Eggplant（鱼香茄子）, Shrimp with pepper salt（椒盐有头虾）, Eight treasures tofu pot （八珍豆腐煲）, etc. Cozy place, delicious food, and decent price. read more

Jade Yi's Kitchen is an alright restaurant. The last 2 times I went there my food was not the best. With the most recent being very poor quality. I had the stir-fried with chicken. This dish was not very appetizing. The chicken was chewy like it was frozen then microwaved with some light work on a pan. Buth the worst part was how the sauce and the chicken with the pan fried veggies just tasted like charcoal. Basically, it felt like they burnt it. You could still taste the sauce but it was such a faint taste because the brunt taste of the chicken and veggies just overpowered it so much. The rice was bland and felt like all they did was put it in a slow cooker with no seasoning at all. But My dish before that was more or less ok but the biggest problem is that there sweet and sour sauce was so sweet it made the food later on in the lunch almost impossible to eat. I would have given this restaurant a 1 star but they did have some dishes that actually tasted alright but still with major problems. read more
